Does the episodic model really work for Hitman?

VideoGamer: "Hitman's first episode has more than enough content to justify the price, but there are other concerns."

I agree with the author the greatest thing about this is that the quality should be maintained. Being episodic the developer now have to take account for each part of those episodes and make them justifiable for the purchase.

Vs charging full price for an experience that might have drop off points where they don't even need to maintain a certain level of quality as you already paid them full price.

Because of the structure of hitman and because fans are still getting a final disk-based version I think it's a win-win.

I've read on here many users who stated there not Hitman fans but for 15 bucks will try the game out as a really really great sign that they could grow the Hitman install base but having such a format.

Gangster red brought up a good point by saying having the episodic along with disk-based format we give multiple options to users.

Why only accept one format with content that could be questionable? It literally leaves many gaming purchases up to gambles and leaves many people with buyers remorse I say that all games should have an episodic option along with a final option to welcome people into games they might not have ordinary purchased for full price.

And if you don't like episodic this doesn't necessarily hurt you as a retail version is still releasing.

I would say it's a good thing if you're buying the final version because now you're ensured that users will give their feedback for months prior to the final release ensuring the final version is of great quality.

Why not give a free demo to let friends try out. Those do still exsist right? why would they have to pay 15 bux for it. what if you purchase the whole episodic adventure only to find out the company closed. This makes no sense.

_-EDMIX-_3751d ago

Most demos are not giving you entirety of maps and missions.

When has a company closed down mid episodic game? Also if the game sales episodicly are successful I don't really get why any company would close down.

Also it's not as if companies have not closed down mid development before at least them making money from the episodic content would give them great reason to stay open with the added revenue vs none.

What you're basically saying is gamble the whole company full priced verses another option to make more money at the end of the day you're still getting a final game and those who want an episode we are still getting the choice to purchase parts of the game.

Also I don't know of any demos that let you play half of the game.

For all we know gamers may only want to play half of that content and realized maybe they don't care for more.

That's way better than them never playing it and once again you're still getting a final game so how exactly does it hurt anyone?

If you don't want to experience this game in an episodic format, there's always the option to wait until December (or whenever all of the content is released) and play it as a full package... for the same price of a full game... while other people purchasing the pieces has no effect on you at all...

Other games (i.e. all Tell Tale games and a few others) do this, so why condemn another developer for doing it without evening seeing the results first? Who knows?! It just might be a good game.

Count_Bakula3751d ago (Edited 3751d ago )

That's what I'll do. As long as it all comes together into a full story game and not just a collection of disconnected sandbox missions with numerous variations of completion, I'm good to wait for full experience.

brokenbracket3751d ago

Yeah, I'm waiting for the full game. Simply because I hate episodic releases. I did the same thing with Telltale's Walking Dead. I personally like to immerse myself into the game, rather than having to stop at some point and wait months for the next release. I think that's the same argument most people would have.

ion6663751d ago (Edited 3751d ago )

No! If this started gaining ground get ready folks, get ready to wait for level 2 in other games like mario bros. I will say the same about telltale too.finish your game then call me. It will ruin the expierence. A 1 to 2 month cliffhanger for hitman thats a joke.

_-EDMIX-_3751d ago

But that's your choice to actually play it that way other people may not know what The Walking Dead is and May feel fine paying five bucks to play the first part to see if they want more.

The only joke regarding this is that you think it even affect you personally they're still making a final version so what does that actually matter how it's released? If you don't wish to play it that way just don't play it that way no one's actually putting a gun to your head in forcing you to.

That's like me getting upset that people watch shows episode per episode yet I just buy the box set collection no ones forcing you to do either or pick the one you choose.

Mind you most games are created in this format of having part by part structurally.

Consider until dawn is done in parts Gravity Rush is created and parts almost all the Metal Gear Solid games are created with this structure I would argue most games are created with such a structure that if they wanted to they actually could be done episodically.

if you prefer to play the final version why not merely wait until it's available? but I personally like the option of having multiple options I'm sorry but I don't see how this going to hurt and I'm telling you as a person that prefers to purchase my games on disk as final versions.

Walking Dead might owe lots of its success to this format I'm sure many people only played the first couple parts of walking dead and didn't care for it but at least they got to try a large portion of it and it's not as if this stopped anyone from playing the final thing.

This is sort of like the rental versus physical disk vs streaming vs download argument.

Having one preference doesn't somehow destroy another method if you like to get your games through physical that's completely fine I don't understand why a streaming or rental option would hurt you if you're not even playing it that way anyway.

Why does somebody else enjoying another method hurt you if you are just purchasing it a final version anyway?

ion6663749d ago

Dude why are you insisting people pay for free demos. Are you corporate?

Kreisen3751d ago

I think ill just wait untill all the episodes come out then watch some reviews and decide from there.

Scottyxboxoneandps43751d ago

Im waiting for the full release. Dont like the thought of getting through the prologue and having to wait a month to carry on the story. Rather have the whole game to play it when i want to, not have to wait around for the next chapter.

It’s the 25th anniversary this year?

I’d have assumed it would have gotten something like a remastered trilogy of the original games or a remake of the first game. Something for a 25th celebration.

Super lacklustre
