Two of the biggest things it needs:

1) Far more 1st Party support
2) Better memory format, if it's proprietary then make it cheaper

Those two basically hurt the longevity of the system, if not killed it.

after this generation things will change and sony will push it's online services more like playstation now. so instead of making hardware for a handheld they can just offer streaming services on android.

I think many parents just buy tablets for their kids these days instead of portables and that hurt the portable market.

If they do another game device, it should be a kind of hybrid- have an Android mode so it can play all the hot apps, but also have proper thumbstick controls and it's own proper game library that can be coded to the metal, that way it could start reclaiming some of the tablet market.

Almost no one knows what the Vita is. The name hurt the consumer visibility. Just re-release it as "PSP 2", with no GAME CARD slot, and make 128GB the default size.

People don't want a portable console, they want a different experience, one that's easier to pick up and play for 10 minutes here and there. Nintendo know this, and that's why they sell such a ridiculous amount.

Sony should focus on the mobile smart phone side of gaming. Start releasing their IP's for smart phones.

Im not sure if they already did that with the Vita. But theire is a market for it. Just look how great the 3DS is doing.

I wish Japanse studios would completely halt their handheld development tbh. They need to keep their attention on consoles and PC gaming.

No but if they are going to do one actually support it past year 2-3 rather than now they've just given up and left it for the indies, some great games sure but that console can handle uncharted and Killzone surely Sony could have brought some more big guns along, no GTA, Gran Turismo, God of war or metal gear except for the ports psp had exclusive entries for all these big games vita got left high and dry.

It's a tougher market today with so many phones and tablets on the market. And with Nintendo's continuous near monopoly on the handheld market. But it's not for a lack of trying. It's selling great in Japan. It was the west that shunned PS Vita.

Gamers complained it might be expensive,but then,Sony revealed the price to be the SAME price as PSP when it launched at $249.Better technology for the same price. Then Nintendo dropped its overpriced 3DS (because we know Nintendo sells cheap hardware for high profit), and gamers said now PS Vita was expensive again.

Gamers complained about memory cards prices.And maybe that's true. But gamers were rampant in their theft of PSP games previously. I mean stealing games left and right off the net like Dreamcast, PS1 and PS2. Sony had no choice but to go proprietary.hackers would have definitely cracked any DRM.

Also, games were bagged on as hand me downs."Uncharted is not PS3 uncharted.""Killzone is not console killzone." So Sony pushed REMOTE PLAY to PS4. Now you get next gen quality games on a console not capable of those graphics. There shouldn't be ANY complaints that you can do that from anywhere in the world using the internet,PS Vita and PS4.

And most gamers who PS Vita is marketed to(adults) are going to want to play next gen games on a TV or monitor. So it is what it is. But it wasn't for a lack of trying because the portable is amazing.

Maybe they can try again and let Mark Cerny make their next portable.

how about re launching the ps vita with new added features and getting rid of the features we hate.
for example, providing it with slightly larger screen , R2/L2 buttons and replacing the vita memory card slot with a SD card one !!

I say yes, they should stop. I preferred and loved the PSP vs the DS, preferred the Vita over the 3DS, but Sony just shut things down very early with the Vita and I would not buy another handheld from them. I wanted more console style games like Ninja Gaiden 1/2, uncharted, Cod, and none of the phone like Indy games which I have no interest in. The tech behind the Vita is amazing, though..

Vita s selling like really well in Japan. Glad I can enjoy a PS handheld thanks to that so yea keep making them and dev new models Sony

Its hard to support a home console and portable market at the same time.The major studios in the west aren't going to jump aboard plus Sony 1st party won't split resources..

I'd rather play on an Ipad with controller support than have to deal with a tiny screen device. So yeah they should focus on their resources on tablets Instead.

If Sony comes out of the portable market then Nintendo should come out of the home console market. It seems this article wants everyone to give up after a few failures.

I never owned or was interested in a PSP, but I don't think they should stop investing in the handheld market. Tons of consumers love the PSP...what they should do is provide first party support.

Problem with the vita was no big games. Psp had the god of war spin offs, syphon filter, gta stories, final fantasy crisis core, metal gear solid peace walker all big franchises but not ports. At the moment all I play on my vita is persona 4 and indies. Still love my vita

Unless they make an exclusive deal with a phone company to play portable titles, i'd say leave... I dont want them to get out but if nobody is supporting it, theres not going to be anything to play

Well, given the success of the PS4 I think the playstation brand is still strong. At this point a new portable from them might actually do alright, given strong support and PS4 integration of some kind.

I thought someone stole my Vita when I saw that picture. It looks just like mine with that inch of dust on it. I bought if for my four year old but it literlly has nothing for him to play on it. Ray Man Legends is the game he has for it and thats it.

Me on the other hand would have no use for it. I'm a console gamer and thats it. I don't even have any games on my smartphone. The controls are always so weird on smartphones. Not to mention the controls when you were trying to play a PS4 game on your Vita. How does R1, R2,L1,L2 work again? Nice feature but you had to be in the same room as the PS4 was located, if not it would drop the signal.

I'd still rather play my GBA than my Vita. So many Great RPGs. Got the urge to play Golden a Sun now.

After the PSP and the Vita, I think it's obvious what Sony must do...and that's not releasing something so powerful, use cartridges that store saved data,make it affordable and continue to support it with games even if it isn't doing too great.

"Should they?" or "Haven´t they already?". There is no further development in the horizon for portable handhelds... Vita game numbers are dwindling... They tried the Sony Ericsson approach, PSP, GO, VITA... Unless they can make VR portable ( chuckle ), mobile is out for Sony.

They should revive the Xperia Play gaming mobile (see pic) and give it retractable analogue sticks that fold out when you open it.

There are so many great games on the PS Vita. The system itself is the best handheld out there right now.

Wait for 5-7 years and make a handheld PS4 with reasonably priced, fast Sony branded, aggressively recommended SD/microSD cards.

100% PS4 digital library compatibility and with certain new cart releases for faux "VITA 2.0" game specially for Japan.

PS4 Digital (all home console games)
PS4 Portable Carts (for those supposed new Sony handheld JPN games).

I don't think just a simple VITA 2.0 would be as good or as safe.

The vita will always be the little engine that could for me. It's the one handheld I'll always cherish. That being said I think Sony should officially open up the vita to homebrew games, let it be capable of modded games as well as let adult game developers have a go on it. By doing this they can collect a fee off these modders, and adult game developers without investing a penny on the vita it could still be a source of revenue to divert cash into future Sony consoles. It's win win. As long as the vita is the last handheld they make.
