PS2 Emulation on PS4 Will Fail In The End – This War of Mine Dev

11 bit Studios' Karol Zajaczkowski believes it will only interest roughly 5 percent of PS4 owners.

Sony should have just went and made a real PS2 Emulator on the PS4. Just like the one on PC.

This would have made many PS4 owners happy.

gameseveryday3790d ago

Or they could have build on Microsoft's approach and provided two options:

a. If you dont have the PS2 game buy it from PSN.
b. If you have the PS2 game, put in the PS4 and play.

DarkOcelet3790d ago

That would have worked too.

derkasan3790d ago

I'm personally a fan of this approach. It's the same way the Xbox support on the 360 worked - I picked up Ninja Gaiden Black and Burnout 3 on the marketplace and were able to play them just fine.

Ferrethat223790d ago

You mean to tell me you can put Original Xbox games inside Xbone and play them? When did this happen This is amazing!

Going back 2 gens and playing games from over a decade ago is impressive. good job MS.

can't wait to go home and play my copy of jade empire on Xbone, upscaled 1080p, achievement support, remote play features qnd more.
Amazing technology is amazing

thisgamer5033790d ago

@Ferrethat22

So you think emulating a machine from 2 generations ago is more impressive than emulation a more recent machine?

donwel3790d ago

That's essentially what the owners of the 60GB (and 80GB I think) PS3 phat had last gen. At least once they started putting PS2 games on the PSN.
I had a number of PS2 discs and they worked great. Maybe it's something Sony might try again in a year or two, maybe not, we'll have to wait and see. The option to do it would be nice though.

skratchy3790d ago Show
UKmilitia3790d ago

yeah what gets me is at console launch Sony ripped MS with the share game thing, now there doing just as bad with ps2 emulation imo.

rocketpanda3790d ago

That would be spot on. I don't have a problem paying for a ps2 game I don't own and want to play. The option to put in a pa2 game you already own and play it through the ps4 by emulation would be a fantastic.

Also I think the headline is misleading. The emulation is just an option and not a primary function or reason to own the hardware. As long the ps4 sells well for current generation then the option to purchase and play ps2 games wi be there. It's simply another revenue stream. Unless it costs a hell a lot of money for third parties to have the games on Sony's servers.

never4get3790d ago

Dark Cloud 2 looks as Great as Ni No Kuni 2. Failure? No, it would double PS4 sales!

3789d ago
shadow_satey3789d ago

Yeah, but that would require PlayStation actually listening to their fans, and we all know they don't do that very much, unless it makes them money. Oh you want backwards compatibility? Well, you can now rent Ps3 games! Oh you want to pop in your old PS2 game? Well, we can resell you it, and we added trophies so that'll be $10.

Well if we complain enough they'll do what MS is doing

I can't be arsed to wait for them to put old games on the store. Especially if how long in Europe it took for some games to be released for the PS1.

Most games like Bugs Bunny Lost in Time or Sheep, Dog n Wolf probably won't be added

Phunkydiabetic13790d ago

You people should be happy Sony is even doing what it is doing. This guy is right, the mass majority could care less about backwards compatability, it is surprising Sony is doing it in the first place.

badz1493790d ago

this is taken directly from the new game coming to Xbone BC article;

"To date, millions of Xbox gamers around the world have logged more than 21 million hours playing Xbox One Backward Compatibility games..."

that's like just over an hour average spent on BC by every Xbone owners out there. I'm not judging and no expert either but I think you overestimated the popularity of BC on the Xbone.

personally, I don't really care for BC because I already don't have enough time to play all my games I got from PS+ and my backlogs of games on PS4 and even more on PS3 but I don't think Sony is at the wrong here. I'm not backing their pricing strategy either but they decide to offer a service of letting you play old games on PS4, upres-ed and trophy patched! I think that's enough reason to justify them being $15 a pop.

I think it's just haters playing their hate card here on Sony. remasters aren't new. we have had 3 or 4 remastered old games for $15 now but why suddenly now it becomes a problem? it's just standard pricing.

people also complaint when Sony charge $20 a month or $45 for 3 months for you to play hundreds of PS3 games through PS Now! I'm not a subscriber because I have a life to live aside from playing games and I don't have enough time to play like I said but I think that's an extremely great deal! Sony just can't win with the haters, ha?

BC on xbone is great and all but if you don't have the games, you still need to pay for them. THINK about that!

UKmilitia3789d ago

BC is something i dont care about at all, once a new gen is on way i never go back.
i always finish off the generation and then move on and let the rest become memories.

i think for the money spent it isnt worth it at all.
psnow, xbox BC,now ps2 games are a waste of time and would prefer money spent on new grounds, except maybe a couple of remakes

DDMNeo3789d ago

Sony isn't in the same position as Microsoft, so that's probably not going to be effective. These are corporations people. These guys exist to make money, and please their shareholders. If there's anytime left over they'll try and make you happy. The reason MS is trying to make people happy is because the top brass and some shareholders aren't as confident in the brand right now. So they're trying to boost sales to look good. People also need to understand that for every good thing these companies do they need to justify the decision with multiple layers of a company so that it's going to make them a profit. Sometimes what comes out is good. Sometimes it's bad. It's unfortunately like a game of telephone.

Jmanzare3789d ago

Do you remember when BC was announced at e3 for xb1 the crowd went crazy. People definitely want this feature it was the #1 requested feature for xb1. Quit trying to downplay because we all know if it was on ps4 it would be the greatest thing in the world.

@Ferrethat22 No you cant put original Xbox games inside your Xbox one and play them . Inside your 360 with certain games yes . Sure they play 360 games on the One but you have to waste time downloading them , basically its a nightmare . Spesh if you still own your 360 play them on there

BossBattle3790d ago

It's not a nightmare putting 360 games in the X1 and installing. It's the same thing as installing games from X1 discs to the X1 and PS4 games to the PS4. It's that simple.

Skate-AK3790d ago

He was being sarcastic.

NeckBeardBSMTDweller3790d ago

nogoodusernamesleft3790d ago

my buddy's playing dark cloud 2 on his ps4 right now and it has issues with white lines randomly popping up on the screen. no wonder the game is on sale right now, that's sony quality control failure

Christopher3789d ago

I have no clue on the QC of the games, but the game is on sale because the first week of new PS2 releases are at sale prices.

showtimefolks3790d ago

keep complaining the word ps4 and failure isn't going together nicely. people are willing to pay otherwise no one is forcing us to play ps2 games

why is it that we must must always complain?

the only reason we have BC on xbox one is because ps4 was kick the living crap out of xbox one(still is).

this is the same MS that wanted DRM policies

this is the same MS that told people BC isn't possible

you don't have net buy a xbox360

xbox one can't be used without kinect 2

so yes go ahead give them credit

Sonital3790d ago

This is the same thing that keeps being posted by the same people time and time again. People have moved on as MS listened and saw the initial rejection. Time to get over it!

showtimefolks3790d ago

Sonital

we all have to just move on.

xbox one has BC and ps4 has psn-now and ps2 emulation. use it or not but stop complaining

there are more than enough next gen title for us to enjoy.

drive club
forza horizon
forza 5-6
knack
killzone
dead rising
ryse
tomb raider
halo 5
gears ultimate
rare collection
the order 1886
bloodborne
infamous second son
until dawn
batman
witcher 3
mad max
just cause 3
rainbow six
black ops 3
ac syndicate
star wars
fallout 4
mgs 5

i means i am missing so many games on this list. point being there are more than enough games for us to enjoy without complaining

if you don't like ps2 games on ps4 just don't play them or spend money on the.

guess what complaining will not achieve anything. you want to make a difference than speak with your wallets

Seraphim3790d ago

showtimefolks, that's exactly it. use it or don't but don't complain. If it interests you then great if not move along and do your thing.

DarkOcelet3789d ago

I never said PS4 is a failure.

I haven't mentioned Microsoft.

I just wished they would make real Backwards Compatibility, that is all.

candystop3789d ago

"Why is it that we must must always complain?"

Bingo! People need to simply give props where it's do. MS is doing one heck of a job with its console and this shouldn't go unnoticed. Regardless of how much better Sony is doing in terms of sales MS is doing fine too! Sony is supposed to be the market leader yet they are behaving like the underdog. MS is running the show and you can bet if Sony was the underdog it would be the same scenario for MS.

But then they wouldn't be able to charge $15 for 16 year old games, derp. At the end of the day, as much as you might love Sony and the PS4, they are still a business first. It's all about that cash money before making people happy. Clearly they have the ability to make a standard PS2 emulator on the PS4, but what would the point of wasting all that time and energy for a small percentage of users to use discs they already own? Financially it makes no sense, and it would hardly be a system seller. If the only thing that would make a difference to people between buying a PS4 and not buying one is the ability to play games from 2 generations ago, they are much more likely to just buy a PS2 for $20 at a thrift store.

Christopher3789d ago

You people do realize that while you're saying Sony should have done one thing or another, the article itself is saying that BC overall is a failing element due to developer time it takes versus costs incurred not being offset by the profit gained from doing it in the first place.

Rookie_Monster3790d ago

A shame as Sony had a chance of doing some good PR for thier fanbase on PS4 that already owned such titles with providing them option to use their PS2 disc and last gen PS2 classic digital titles purchased on PSN account on PS3 to carry over without charge.

That would be a major fan service. Oh well.

pivotplease3790d ago

Realistically (i.e. with basic business logic in mind), I think the best and most plausible middle-ground would be to do what the Wii U does and offer the classics you own digitally from last gen for a small upgrade fee. The PS4 classics library expands, Sony still hits paydirt, and loyal fans who may have already bought a game twice don't get burned. It's not like it would be hard to program some kind of cross-buy discount associations between similar store items. I'm sure the real obstacle is the publishers.

TKCMuzzer3790d ago

How do you know this is possible? The Xbox One is only going back a generation where online was common practice. I imagine the PS2 disc games have no digital imprint on them that would inform Sony of that particular disc being inserted, therefore they can not confirm who the owner is, therefore they can not just give the game away.

It's madness that people are comparing going back one generation to going back two. There are bigger complications, licensing for online sales never existed in PS2 days. they need renewing for every generation and format they can be bought on.

I think all Sony wanted to do was offer people the choice to play some classics with upscaled graphics and trophies if they wanted to.

You seem to suggest all you want to do is play your PS2 games in your PS4, I know this is a stupid question but why don't you just play them on your PS2 as they will be no different.

Lol, sorry I just noticed it was you. Drum and banging comes to mind.

thisgamer5033790d ago

Not everyone has room in their entertainment stand to hold all of their previous consoles. Being able to play the old games and current games on one system is a huge convenience. Only one set of controllers. I still have an nes, snes, n64 all with controller but I opt to play the games on my nvidia shield because I only need one little box and controller in my living room. I'm jealous that you have enough room for everything but that's not the case for the vast majority of people.

BossBattle3790d ago

Not a lot of people have a working PS2. Those things malfunctioned often. But people may still have the PS2 game discs.

3790d ago
sullynathan3790d ago

I always feel like these emulation/backwards compatibility options on consoles don't interest as many people when they come out 3 - 4 years after the console has released.

It would have been better if Sony had this working on day one of PS4 release but by now, not very many actually care.

pivotplease3790d ago

Same goes for PSone classics. I have nearly 20 of those and I never even played a few of them because I figured they would be tied to my PSN account for more than one generation. It's not like they're demanding to emulate. I can get an emulator going on most low-end computers in no time. I hope they're on the way. Digital software consolidation should definitely be a goal for the end of this generation and the start of the next.

rainslacker3790d ago (Edited 3790d ago )

I think it has it's advantages to being available at release, particularly for the hard core which tend to continue playing games, and keep games they like, and it appears as added value for those that are looking to get consoles around the time, as it increases the overall library to include prior generations, thus giving more game choices. But otherwise, I don't believe it's such a desired feature outside the hardcore to go crazy over it if it isn't included. The casuals or average mainstream probably doesn't care, and many hardcore simply want the newest things available.

Would have loved the feature day one, and would even like something more apt to my situation now(I have tons of PS2 games), but if I don't get it, then it is what it is. I've expressed my desire to get it to Sony on their forums, but beyond that, I'm not going to ride the hate train and demand something that was never promised....in fact it was stated quite explicitly that it wouldn't be made available before the consoles launched, and several times afterwards.

TKCMuzzer3790d ago

Honestly, if the games are classics, I would rather they remaster them and take advantage of the PS4 or leave them alone, I like to remember games as they were, playing them now in their original state ruins the memory for me.

sashimi3790d ago

XB1 tag in PS4 only related news.
Profit.

thisgamer5033790d ago

It's weird I know. It seems that I see all the same news whether I'm browsing under the PS4 or XB1 tab anymore.

Paytaa3790d ago

The one thing I don't get regarding digital titles is how games on PS3 and PS4 can be cross-buy yet the digital PS2 games on PS3 don't carry over to the PS4. The physical disc issue I'm not sure about since I don't know the logistics of how that all works but I feel as though the digital titles should just carry over if Sony is going to offer the same games anyway on PS4.

eZJrg6ur3790d ago

A game being cross-buy doesn't mean the code itself is portable between consoles. It means that two totally separate versions of the game were made.

PS2 Classics on the PS3 aren't straight PS2 code, they're modified to run on the PS3. PS2>PS3 emulation was never a straight forward thing. There isn't a full emulator in the PS3, which is why there was never a huge amount of PS2 classics released. It required companies put some work into the porting.

PS2 on PS4 is different though. The PS4 is powerful enough to run a pure emulator, which allows a straight port of the code. This makes it easy to bring over PS2 games. But a PS2 emulator would only work with original PS2 code, it would require a whole separate emulator to run the PS2 Classics code - since that is a hodgepodge of PS2 and PS3 code.

Finally, PS2 physical discs don't work on many disc drives, so it is not outside the realm of possibility that they literally don't work on the PS4. The fine print in the PS2 on PS4 games explicitly mentions that as well.

Microsoft is in a much better position because the Xbox 360 was running hardware that was largely PCish. Since the Xbone is also running PC hardware this makes porting very easy. The hardware differences between the PS2, PS3, and PS4 are massive so without a full emulator, devs would have to put a ton of time into porting games.

This is also why we're unlikely to ever see "PS3 Classics" on the PS4. The hardware is massively different and a pure ps3 emulator is unlikely to run well on the PS4 since, as others pointed out, emulators require a huge amount of overhead to work.

deathtok3790d ago

It's a DVD format, the physical discs can be read by the optical drive. Sony has not opted to support it.

rainslacker3790d ago (Edited 3790d ago )

PS2 discs will physically read in the drive. If you insert one, it says it's not in the proper format...or something similar. There's nothing special about the PS2 DVD games.

I don't know if it will read the PS2 games that were released on CD, as it's unknown if there is a CD laser diode on the laser assembly. I suppose I could go try one out to see what it says, but it'd probably say it can't recognize the disc itself.

@azn below

They're the same game image as you'd get on the disc. That image is rewrapped into the emulator release software, and the emulator handles the increase in frame rate and resolution bumps/improvements. It also handles the trophy support using a memory scanning function which looks for changes in memory to update trophy flags so the actual running code of the game remains unchanged. The emulator also intercepts the system commands for loading and saving data, and uses a virtual memory card to handle such things.

deathtok3790d ago

Hahaha... the disagrees on my last comment above about PS2 discs being on DVD prove this is a fanboy war more than anything else.

I should've know better :)

AznGaara3790d ago

They are not the same game. The PS3 version of the GTA are straight Ps2. The Ps4 ones have better frame rate, the ability to remote play and added trophy support. That is what you're paying for on top the already existing game.

thisgamer5033790d ago

Remote play is at the OS level. It has nothing to do with modifying the game whatsoever. Trophy support is just scanning changes in the memory at certain points to produce trophy notifications at the OS level.

ThanatosDMC3790d ago
