Square Enix Hitman Episodic Rant

Ashley Weston from Gamerscore Whores writes "Square Enix has set a dangerous catalyst in confirming that Hitman will be an episodic game. The special edition contains no physical disc and will contain a game code to download instead. Is this a dangerous move and will other publishers follow suit. Let us know in the comments section."

I don't like this trend of Square Enix making certain AAA games epidocic like Hitman and the FFVII remake

fanboysmackdown3765d ago

I agree. This gen has had some real bad trends. No single player in many FPS titles, way too many remasters and a lack of creativity and new ip's.

_-EDMIX-_3765d ago

I would say no to legit every thing you just stated.

We actually got more new IPs this gen as of right now, then we got remasters, we got more new games in general then we have remasters.

No SP in FPS titles not only isn't new, its not a "Trend" as last gen some of those same teams did the same thing.

Evolve for example is being done by Turtle Rock which did L4D1 and 2....which both had no Single Player..

That is not them making a game with no Single player, that is merely them just making a multiplayer game, I'd legit like folks to stop saying SP is missing as if the whole concept of making a game it to make a single player. That has NEVER been some default concept of why someone is making a game, ever.

We got TF2 last gen, Counter Strike GO, M.A.G, WarHawk, Star Hawk and many more. Its not brand new even in the slightest.

Creativity is a bit subjective to say we are or are not getting as I feel we are getting many, many creative titles this gen.

Every major publisher right now is actually making new IPs so not sure where you got that we have a lack of them.

gangsta_red3765d ago

They are definitely testing the waters with this type of release.

It is in a way smart business to keep users interested in a game and keep them coming back. Also drawing out the game in episodes instead of being one and done and having to start over on another sequel.

I can only imagine it might have some impact on cost development when doing it this way.

averagejoe263765d ago

FF7 and Hit man are being released in 2 completely different formats.

Hit man is being released in episodes. Small $ for a small amount of gameplay.

FF7 is having its story played across a few full length, full priced $60 releases.

Not even close to the same thing.

xPhearR3dx3765d ago

"few full length, full priced $60 releases."

When exactly was that confirmed? I don't recall them ever announcing a price or pricing options.

ikkokucrisis3765d ago

This episodic deployment strategy only works if the releases come out quickly.

Waiting until March for the first episode to release is not quickly...

_-EDMIX-_3765d ago

.....you guys already know my stance on this. lolz.

If Hitman is coming out in fall this year as a final thing on disk....who cares why its in episodes prior to?

Same with FFVII remake, lets say its coming out in full in ending 2017 or spring 2018, who cares that its coming out in parts prior to?

I've heard many state what if the episodes don't do well and they stop making the game, but I don't recall Square stating that the whole game was dependent on the episode sales.

Anything extra in sales and in feed back I feel is a good thing.

I am of the opinion that if you release an episodic game, it shouldn't be at the 60 dollar price... Just me, nothing against episodic games.

Bathyj3765d ago

You believe can buy the 1st part for $15 and then 10 after that, or not at all.

_-EDMIX-_3765d ago

I don't disagree, merely where did you hear this? lolz.

Bathyj3765d ago (Edited 3765d ago )

Im fine with this. Its an experiment and you have to start somewhere if youre trying something new.

Would I like it all at once? Sure. But its clearly not finished is it. That means the game wouldnt be finished to near the end of the year.

So I can buy a small part of it now, and If I dont like it I havent wasted a lot of money. I dont see the problem. You can pay for it all now for the regular price or buy them all separatly which only comes out to 5 bucks more spread over a year. 5 BUCKS. Is that what everyones complaining about.

fanboysmackdown3765d ago

What the hell are you trying to say, was that English or Swaheelee? If Square Enix wants to experiment why don't they experiment on something new and different. Hitman is an established game, not something that needs an experiment. The series has lots of diehard fans which want the full game. So go back to your Swaheelee lessons.

Bathyj3765d ago (Edited 3765d ago )

So feel free to wait til the game is completely finished and buy it then. Episodic or not, you still werent going to get it early this year.

PS, My english was fine. No need to be insulting. Do you often have trouble understanding those around you?

slappy5083765d ago

It's spelt "Swahili" maybe you're the one that needs lessons :D

And I agree with Bathyj if people want to play this game early they can, if you want the full game just wait a bit longer for it, no harm no foul.

_-EDMIX-_3765d ago

Agreed.

I've found that many on here don't even have real arguments, merely assumptions and MOST actually think no final game is coming out and this is merely the only way of playing it.

I read earlier someone who wasn't a Hitman fan, would buy the first part to gauge interest.

How on earth is that NOT a good thing? He could become a huge fan of it and end up buying the final thing.

At the end of the day, Hitman is still coming fall this year.

I'd rather have it come fall this year with feed back, more money from fans to help its development and clearly more fans buying the final game without feeling they don't know what they are getting into.

Gangster Red made a great point, what if they released the final game along with episodes?

What this would mean even if we don't factor it being worked on, if it was released this way when the game is finally done, how would that hurt anyone?

If you want a full game.....your free to buy it that way, but they are correct to have a method that is pay for smaller parts to even see if you'll like the game.

For all we know, this can help them not only make more money, it can help fans see if they will even like the game BEYOND your standard demo.

I've hated games mid way through and just stopped playing, why spend $60 for a game you don't like half way through, when for half of that you can just stop and save your money?

This is a great thing for all gamers and publishers.

Imagine being able to give feed back WHILE the game is still being made.

For those who want a full game, nothing is actually stopping that, your still getting a full game this fall and I've read nothing about Square making this based on episode per episode dependent. They merely want input and feed back before its fall release. They are not making half a game in less then a year folks.... MORE then half of that game is already done and what I've read stated the game releasing in March is their final build in terms of function and design ie your not merely buying half of a game build or anything, it is of final production value, merely not the whole levels or hits.

equal_youth3765d ago

I will only buy this so hitman won't go under. It's a shame that the management drove the franchise in this corner of episodic bs. I hope the franchise survives this and goes "completely" back to the roots.

showtimefolks3765d ago

just do like me and wait to buy the physical copy later in 2016.(will only buy if it's any good) i really liked hitman absolution

i will not support FF7 if it's not a complete game. if square enix is cutting one game and making it into a trilogy than it better be worth it. otherwise you screwing up a fan loved franchise

speak with your wallets to make a difference

i didn't buy ranbow six because it didn't have single player stoyr. yet the game did good so once again gamers prove we are the biggest hypocrites)

we say we want new IP's and less remasters/sequels yet we buy the same sequels yearly instead of supporting new IP's. that's why publishers don't take us serious

it's like when bungie said when we announce something people be like throwing money at the screen

gamers=hypocrites

_-EDMIX-_3765d ago

errrr...not really.

Its based on this site doesn't speak for millions and millions of gamers.

Someone clearly likes Rainbowsix for its MP if many are buying it.

Mind you, for all we know they are still making a single player game.

"yet we buy the same sequels yearly instead of supporting new IP's. that's why publishers don't take us serious"

That isn't really true either, we actually are still getting new IPs and more new games then remasters. They are not being made instead of as they are not even being done by the same teams that actually produce games.

Bluepoint games for example doesn't actually make games....they merely port them, sooooo you where never actually going to get Uncharted 5 or The Last Of Us 2 from Bluepoint games..

That is a huge misconception. Just cause gamers on this site don't like something, doesn't mean they represent all of gaming as a whole, seriously....don't buy too much into what is being said on here, many times people feel as if what many read on here is solid fact when in reality its merely a small minority of a few folks.

I mean...who is "we"?

People still support new IP, look at Destiny, Titanfall, Watchdogs etc When a game is doing 10 million, 13 million etc, its clear someone is buying it.

Playing a remaster doesn't mean a new IP or new game won't come based on someone buying that remaster.

RE Zero remastered.....Capcom CONFIRMED to be remaking RE2 and making RE7 right now on top of another new RE game.

I mean...we go Uncharted collection by a different team, that isn't involved with Uncharted 4, the other half of Naughty Dog is actually working on TLOU2 and a new IP.

Sooooooo how on earth are folks buying remasters, suddenly stopping brand new developments when some of those publishers are already and have been making new IPs and games as we speak?

I mean...you really think all the remasters Sony paid other teams to make are stopping new IPs? Yet The Order exist? Until Dawn exist? Uncharted 4 being made? I mean...

Maybe we can get both..

showtimefolks3765d ago

_-EDMIX-_

seriously man? you want to talk destiny and watch dogs? 2 of the biggest games with huge advertisement budgets. and did both bring anything new to the table? one is halo with random loot and the other is a gta wanna be

now titanfall actually tried to improve the FPS market but still it didn't sell as well as expected.(it was suppose to be COD killer)

sunset overdrive? new IP

and i am fine by remasters to be honest with you. but my point was people buy known franchises more than risking it by buying a new IP

each year some of the best selling games are the same

batman
witcher 3
mgs 5
battlefront
black ops 3
halo 5
fallout 4
rainbow six

all sequels or known franchises were the top selling games of 2015

Take note, Sony, you're falling behind by a lot.

-Foxtrot47d ago (Edited 47d ago )

I was just going to say this, their biggest and top rated game here is TLOU2 for PC….it’s embarrassing.

Even Ubisoft and EA are ahead

Kind of surprised Nintendo is pretty low aswell, their biggest game is also a rerelease with the Switch 2 version of TotK.

StoneColdCrazy47d ago

That’s what happens when you start shutting down your own studios and forget what actually made you matter in the industry in the first place. Sony used to set the standard — now it feels like they’ve lost that identity. And if they decide to walk away from the PC market too, that’s going to be another huge mistake — that platform is only growing, and ignoring it now would just put them even further behind.

1Victor47d ago

@christopher:” Take note, Sony, you're falling behind by a lot.”
.
Why single out Sony? Microsoft didn’t do any better than the year before 5th same as Sony 9th and they have acquired activision and other mayor titles that have boosted their score massively from a 9th and Sony a 4th the year before the acquisitions.
Sony does need to do better without a doubt and I do hope they do take note but not the note of buying publishers is the way to succeed.

Christopher47d ago

1. Microsoft didn't get worse.
2. Sony got way worse.
3. Because Sony needs the criticism the most considering their publishing output this generation has been propped up by last gen ports and third-party developers for the most part.

47d ago
thesoftware73047d ago

1Victor,

I don't wanna speak for Christopher, but like most of us we recognize that Sony's output this Gen has been way below their own standards.

Also Sony did buy a fair amount of Devs, I know you will say they were not publishers, and don't compare in size, but they had their fair share of Aquisitions, including the very well established Bungie.

The overall point is with their stellar first party track record of the past, they should not be going down, they are singled out because they are some of the best videogame devs/publisher on the planet...no matter what reasons we attribute to the situation, they are moving in the wrong direction... period.

47d ago
KyRo46d ago

Its widely accept that Sony this generation has been underwhelming. We've had more peripheral releases, controller variants, PS5 accessories than games it feels like. The exclusives were also PS4 and what little output they have put exclusively on PS5 is nowhere near as memorable as what came in every generation before that.

This isn't a Sony hate post but anyone who's older and has been around for a long time gaming will agree that PS5 is by far Sony's worst generation. As much as Xbox is in the gutter, I pray the do bounce back in the hope we get Sony to wake up again.

darthv7246d ago (Edited 46d ago )

If you want to critique MS... you are doing so towards their management. The games output and their hardware have been much better than PS this gen. Sadly... people still hold a grudge against XB because of MS. Thankfully i am not that petty... I've been enjoying their games output in the drought of PS. And add in some NS1/2 games as well to balance things out. Things will change for me once Wolverine hits, and I start using my 5 more. That one I'm looking forward to. And the Marvel fighter... I'm not a GTA player so that has no bearing on my view of things.

Big part of that has been the live service push resulting in cancellation or flop after flop but when they put out the games their fans want we get amazing stuff like astro bot

Leadership really screwed the pooch trend chasing

Well I apologize I was wrong about not doing worse but my statement of Microsoft getting a boost still stand 🤷🏿

47d ago
1Victor47d ago

Well OBSCURED unlike you I’m honorable enough to recognize when I’m wrong and apologize.
.
@ The software you know there’s no comparison between what Microsoft acquired and what Sony acquired that’s why you tried to get ahead of the conversation, yes we all know Sony can do better than what they have done this gen but they inhaled the poison GAS they thought would bring money for years but we make sure they got the message and quite a few games got cancelled you know as well a hit like that take years to be corrected and by now they hopefully will have taken steps away from the GAS and slowed their approach to them.

But... but... the garbage-mongers always tell us that Square Enix is in trouble! 😂

Christopher47d ago

Square doesn't help that it fear mongers itself with ridiculous 'goals' that they can't reach and then they proclaim failure if they don't reach it. They're quite freaking profitable and people act like they're dying.

SimulationDaily47d ago (Edited 47d ago )

Keep in mind that these "proclamations" are usually third-hand bad translations from somedude who was at the investor conference, posted on Twitter, and picked up by press and youtubers like they were gold, and then when the official translation comes out, they're much softer statements, but at that point, the damage is done.

gold_drake47d ago

to be very fair

being number one on these things does not indicate how "well" their games do selling wise.

Sorry fellow N4gamers.

Or, alternatively, don't cut Switch and Steam out of your biggest releases day one.

360ICE151d ago

If your response to a 112 page presentation from a profit-maximizing investment fund about the need for corporate restructuring (i.e. layoffs), integrating non-gaming (i.e. sell merch or build a theme park) and other corporate initiatives, is that it's about "go woke, go broke", then it's because you've lost the ability to think in any terms. Awful way to live your life. Private equity is destroying the games industry while you obsess that Square made a cringe game everyone thinks is cringe in 2023. Time to move on.
