The Division will succeed where Destiny failed

Alex from GamersFTW writes "The release of the The Division’s superb new trailer, and new revelations detailing the games intriguing backstory suggest that it could be the title to finally realise the potential of a non-linear open world RPG shooter. There is now reason to be cautiously optimistic that The Division is going to succeed in delivering the sort of experience that Destiny failed to produce."

I hope this does well, I'm interested in it to say the least, but I feel many people will write it off because of its graphical downgrade from the announcement footage. Or if Bungie wheel out something to entice the Destiny players this year, than maybe not as many would jump over.

Anybody writing a game off because of a graphical downgrade is hardly a gamer to begin with. Just some internet hipster.

metalgod883779d ago

Normally, I'm with you guys, but the graphical quality should only go up. If the game doesn't look as good as it did TWO years ago, that means that what they thought was going to be possible, isn't. So that leaves the burning question, what else did they do to this game 2 years after we first saw it?

Freeball3779d ago

@ metalgod

What difference does it make what they THOUGHT they could do 2 years ago? What they could do and what they produced should be what the game is judged on. Stop looking for some mythical perfect game, because it doesn't exist. I can't believe how many people complain about games that aren't even released and they haven't even played for themselves.

Mkai283779d ago (Edited 3779d ago )

I agree, as I recall this game is open world right? It already looks better then most open world games. Also, will this be cross play? If it is, it may explain why the graphics on PC won't get that much better..

FPS_D3TH3779d ago (Edited 3779d ago )

Right Freeball? All I can think is its prepubescent teens who've never gamed outside the last console generation. That or man children getting upset they spent too much on a high end rig. Literally makes no logical sense for it to be much else. It's sad and maddening. Being a dev sounds about as stressful as being a cop these days lol.

I don't see why both games couldn't Co exist destiny has gaps with not alot of content and I'm sure this will.

They are both completely different games but similar in the fact that they are the same genre.

Division looks good regardless of graphics which imo rank low for an mmorpg game. Games like the order, until dawn and quantum break are for eye candy.

madhouse023779d ago

The delays and graphical downgrades have got people upset, but seriously the game looks pretty awesome. Destiny's world is so dull by comparison.

die_fiend3779d ago (Edited 3779d ago )

Graphical downgrades?

What exactly are we comparing to? The initial trailer showcasing the engine? If so, surely you recognised that that was on a pretty ridiculous PC rig, hence the amazing graphics. In going from that to how it looks now on a console, it's not a downgrade, it's getting it working on lower specs.

Everyone screams downgrade around here as though it's some sort of conspiracy where all developers want to end up with poor graphics. They've done what they can with the hardware, it's not a downgrade, it's the best they can do.

Games change through development....shocking I know. People were screaming downgrade about The Witcher 3 compared to PC only footage. And that came out with some of the best graphics on consoles, despite being open world.

Seafort3779d ago

Totally agree.

How can it be a downgrade on consoles when it wasn't displayed on a console in the first place?

That E3 2013 video was like a concept art showing what might be possible and the potential the game may have.

All videos from E3 are like that. Don't ever compare these videos to the finished product on any platform even the PC.

There will always have to be compromises to the developers vision of their game. It's just how things work.

If someone isn't buying the game because of the E3 2013 demo then it shows how ignorant they are and it'll be their loss.

BitbyDeath3779d ago

PC won't even match the initial footage, this is Ubisoft, anyone remember Watch Dogs?

ABizzel13779d ago

And all this could be avoided if developers were honest, SPECIFICALLY UBISOFT, and showed games with real gameplay when they were actually ready and closer to launch instead of staged demos just to get people hyped and disappointed.

My complaints about the game has nothing to do with the graphics, but this is Ubisoft's....what 5th time pulling this. It just needs to stop.

The Division
Watch Dogs
Far Cry 4
Far Cry 3
Assassin's Creed Unity (making it seem like the game ran flawlessly -_-)

A CG reveal trailer about the game is fine, but don't build a scene and act like what we're seeing is the game we'll be playing, when it's really a Quad SLI / Crossfire configuration on a $4,000 gaming PC, with a controller connected to it.

At the same time we as gamers should know better.

ElVeneno3779d ago

See, the thing about that is that they had someone "demo" it with a PS4 controller and also said it was running on the console. So yes, the PS4 players who it caught the attention of can be upset the graphics aren't what they sold it as initially.

If people really thought engine based footage of a game to be released years later would be the final product, I have a bridge I'd like to sell them. The game looks fantastic. At some point I hope we start judging games by how they play and their fun factor rather than graphics and numbers.

But anywho, I still enjoy Destiny but it still has many flaws, especially now that year 2 content has dried up. If The Division releases with strong content right off the bat it would already be ahead of Destiny in my book.

Add on more content down the line that keeps the experience fresh and more people will enjoy it. I'm in regardless though.

ABizzel13779d ago

According to previews there are about 15 single player missions, and 2x - 3x the side mission, although I'm hoping I heard wrong and they said 50 SP mission, or that the beta only had 15 unlocked.

objdadon3779d ago

I'm definitely getting the game but that's because i understand what it is. But i think the lack of standard multiplayer modes will hurt it compared to destiny. Also the amount of shots to kill in destiny is explainable in destiny because they're not human. A lot of early complaints is about the time to kill human ai in the game is not very believable. I understand it's the way an rpg works but this will turn a lot of people off. Either way I'm looking forward to it.

UltraNova3778d ago

For a Clancy game, hence realistic warfare and whatnot, enemies that take up to 15 bullets to die is not so realistic is it?

But that isn't my main issue. Even the visuals look ok.

I've seen hours of gameplay from various sites and Youtubers and what strikes me the most is the super basic combat mechanics, run to cover, shoot, change cover and shoot. Rinse and repeat. Is that all there is to it? I sure hope its not.

zcmilano3779d ago

If the Destiny fanbase moves onto The Division then it could be a big commercial success.. I kinda feel like it lost a bit of momentum with all the delays but the New York open world looks way more interesting than Destiny.

ABizzel13779d ago

It did to me too...until I saw the gunplay, the bullet sponges, and more. I just feel this beta is going to either make or break this game for many, and I'm hoping it turns it around for me.

Maple223779d ago

It does look like it should be a good game, the graphical downgrade could hit them though if people decide it isn't worth their time. Let's hope it lives up to the hype and doesn't end up being a flop in the long run.

basilboxer3779d ago

They have confirmed there are no micro transactions which is a good thing. I just hope the content at launch is decent. Better not be another Battlefront where you have to buy $180 game+season pass to get the most out of it.

rocketpanda3779d ago

Potato-potato,

That's because the microtransactions are changed to dlc. Read the full statement. All they are doing is not implementing a in game microtransaction system but able to buy individual items through first party stores.

How much vanity items impact the game, I don't really know and selling skins doesn't matter with overall impact. I look forward to see the reviews of the game and trying the beta to make a decision.

BlackWolf123779d ago

Bungie said the same thing about Destiny at launch.

There will always be micro transactions in a game like this. It's just a matter of time. They are just waiting for the dust to settle.
