Does Oculus Rift Cost Too Much?

Last week pre-orders opened for the Oculus Rift at $599.99 in the US (plus shipping and applicable taxes) which includes The Oculus Rift itself, Eve Valkyrie and Luckey’s Tale along with an Xbox One controller. After the initial sticker shock wore off, this price still seems to be a mistake.

I was hoping for an analysis for the cost of parts for manufacturing. But, obviously no one has the unit on hand yet to tear apart and show us an estimate. I'm really curious how much they make per unit, because like everyone else, I do find it a little steep considering how prominent screens and most sensors it uses are nowadays.

kraenk123812d ago

So why do you think those two 90 Hz screens should be cheap these days?!

SteamPowered3812d ago

I read that Oculus and Vive use the same screen and its $100USD alone, not including the headset or guts.

sinspirit3812d ago

Very good point. That completely slipped my mind.

But, I wouldn't expect it to be an extreme cost difference.

@SteamPowered

I can believe that.

sweendog3812d ago

Its one 90Hz screen split down the middle 2160x1200

Khaotic3811d ago

Occulus has to make profits off their hardware. I seriously doubt they have any developers in house making aaa games or software to compensate for selling at cost or operating at loss.

MCTJim3812d ago

PC gamers have deeper pockets than most console gamers, so I think the price for what the unit actually offers is a great value, hell I've seem people drop that much on a GPU.

SteamPowered3812d ago

Very true. Pay more to get a better experience.

kraenk123812d ago

Guys....do us a favor and stop submitting the same articles over and over again.

SteamPowered3812d ago

They keep getting knocked off by Moderators because the Vive and Oculus arent "Gaming related". Ive seen 5 articles turfed regarding Vive and Oculus. But they keep cranking out more PSVR articles by the dozen. Go figure....

kraenk123812d ago (Edited 3812d ago )

Nah that are pretty strange standards. I'm just getting tired of this discussion here. Everything has been said already.

And no, it's not overpriced. It would be, if the technology was less advanced.
If you want a certain quality you gotta pay for it.
Not saying the possibly cheaper PSVR will have a lesser quality experience though.

rainslacker3812d ago

I'd rather these authors actually just state what their opinion is instead of trying to make it look like a fair analysis type article by posing the title as a question.

Generally, opinion articles, or any article really, shouldn't use questions as a title, because it means the author doesn't know, which means that there is no reason to read it, since the author isn't doing anything but asking the readers to provide the answer....at least in theory...they still usually assert their opinion anyways.

creeping judas3812d ago

It might be too expensive for the casual gamer crowd?
But for the hardcore PC gamers, that update graphics cards on an annual basis it may not be too expensive. But they definitely priced themselves out of the casuals reach.

Neonridr3812d ago

not everyone bought a DVD player or a cell phone day one either.

New tech can be pricey unfortunately. In 5 years maybe we will see everyone using VR and you can find a headset for $100. But that isn't the case right now.

creeping judas3812d ago

That's right, but when DVD players came out they were too expensive for the casual movie watcher to buy. But they sold to the hardcore movie watcher. Before Bluray blew up, you could get a DVD player cheaper than you could buy a VCR player.

And yes in a few years the cost of all VR equipment will come down, and everyone will be able to join in the VR experience.

sinspirit3812d ago (Edited 3812d ago )

I'm hoping for a high-end video card and Oculus/Vive bundle.

I do wonder if either will be seriously applied to any other function. Many have already talked about things like surgery done remotely with VR as the eyes and controls. I'm thinking if a company uses a 360 degree camera to live feed objects in need of a check up to experts it can be useful for a visual check up before diagnosing.

sashimi3812d ago

They're aiming for the niche of a niche, even if it was $500 it still wouldn't sell much just because of the specs required. Only 1% of PC are even VR ready so most people need an upgrade while also plunking down $600+ just for oculus.

It's about time there is a trigger/reason for a big jump in hardware development. PC gaming has been kinda stagnant in this area in the recent years. I game with a 5 year old CPU and can play all games maxed still.

VR is gonna be the push the industry urgently needs.

sinspirit3812d ago

Definitely. I am very excited for new hardware because of the smaller nanometer chips coming! It's a pretty good step towards worthwhile upgrades. Still, like you said, not a huge deal if you already have a good CPU for a desktop, but on laptops it will be great because of the much reduced power usage, making cooler temperatures much more feasible while having higher performance. Same with the GPU. We already have high end desktop GPU's in a few high-end laptops and with this improvement coming it should be easier and more commonplace with the next GPU's coming our way. Not that they would be exactly equivalent to desktop counterparts, but it would be a needed improvement over mobile versions of desktop GPU's that are far slower.

That's fine. GT7 would overshadow it anyway at it has open wheel and regular cars.

Should have been spending their time updating Squadrons with better resolution, frame rate, haptics, etc as there isn't a game like that on PS VR 2 yet.

But it's EA. They don't think.

Babadook71139d ago

I agree. It would sell better on PSVR2 right now.

Knushwood Butt1139d ago (Edited 1139d ago )

A wasted opportunity, but I don't buy EA / Codemasters stuff anyway. Grid Legends just came out on Plus and I haven't touched it. Why would I when I have GT7 and PSVR2?

Abnor_Mal1139d ago

Not into F1 racing, but still a missed opportunity.

ApocalypseShadow1139d ago

That's where opportunity presents itself that they could offer something else that other developers haven't offered yet. Yeah. There's No Man's Sky. But a space game with a story would be great. Like the old days with Colony Wars.

Abnor_Mal1139d ago

Exactly, they could have possibly lured more players just from the inclusion of a vr mode.

I miss Colony wars and G-Police, Low-Fi I hope will scratch that itch when it releases. We also need a vr War/Starhawk game.

Knushwood Butt1139d ago

Just watched the trailer of Low-Fi. Most definitely on my radar.
