Agree, that's ridiculous. Give me the complete game.

Kalebninja3703d ago

So let me get this straight. If a game is going to release in 4 parts each $15 and the full game releases at the end of the year, you'd rather them not let you play those parts earlier and simply release the full game at the end of the year. they arent charging you more than they would the full game, you're going to get the full game regardless. If anything you get to pay for one part, try it and if you dont like it you dont need to spend money on the rest of it.

gangsta_red3703d ago

What if they gave you the option of both at the same time?

retrogamer093703d ago

You act as if of these 4 parts are going to be content rich. Why in the hell would I pay 15 bucks to potentially play a couple of levels? For this to even make sense for me is if the overall game is 20 hours+ and each installment is 5 to 7 hours. This is a big problem this gen. Stop announcing games so damn early and announce them when they're 4 to 6 months out so we can avoid rubbish like this. Keep supporting practices like this and sooner rather than later you're going to see more studios do this, but at the end the final game will be missing content found in the previous 15 dollar iterations and you'll be paying 60 bucks for it.

-Foxtrot3703d ago (Edited 3703d ago )

Oh come the hell on

We game in a time where industries like EA, Square, Capcom, Ubisoft and the like are always thinking of new ways to shorten development times and cut corners but still make us pay the same if not more.

I bet my entire life savings that if you take Hitman, the recent example, and you finally get all the episodes together you would have paid the same for a shorter overall experience which is mostly full of repetitive gameplay and so called free updates which give gamers the illusion that we are getting the same or more

Let's not be stupid and naïve we know what this industry is like and for once it's go damn time to be a realist and look at they are most likely TRYING to do rather then what you HOPE they do. Optimism is wasted these days and something companies exploit because they don't want you to know the truth

Overall episode based AAA games will end up being shorter at its core but you've paid the same for a full AAA game which should have been longer

_-EDMIX-_3703d ago

Logic doesn't work on N4G...

_-EDMIX-_3703d ago

@FOX- Relax on the personal attacks, you can make a great point without them.

Use examples.

Resident Evil Revelations 2 is still a full Resident Evil title.

The parts it released in are actually irrelevant to the quality of the game. If I cut Witcher 3 or Bloodborne in 4 parts......combined they are still great games, nothing actually hurts that.

I get what you might mean in terms of worry of development, but you must consider that releasing it this way actually forces developers to be consist in quality if they want gamers to buy the next month's episode vs here is $60 for content we don't even know is good until 20 plus hours later, maybe this is a better way to have quality control over time.

Why wait til a full game is done before making quality changes when that can be done during this episodic event?

I mean...if your getting Hitman in 1 year, wouldn't you be happier if your getting it after millions of fans voiced concern over issues with Hits? Maybe quality of levels etc?

This is a good thing, not a bad thing. If done correctly it insures quality control, makes developers EARN their keep vs get away with filler, lets users buy the game early that otherwise may have not bought the game at full price at all.

"Overall episode based AAA games will end up being shorter"

Nope, I don't see any evidence that actually supports any of that, again...play Resident Evil Revelations 2, I don't think the method of its release has much to do with the length or its quality or anything like that. Mind you, I feel full price games are still fine, but episodic games might make sense for certain concepts. I'm open to seeing more teams try this.

Consider Walking Dead might owe LOTS of its success to that model, I would have never played that whole series, if that game was full price as suppose to $5 an episode, I don't know if I would have given it a chance otherwise.

jmac533703d ago

There is absolutely no guarantee that you are going to get anything good in the rest of the episodes. I don't know why anyone would give them $60 for a promise. They might be half-assed levels because they have already collected the money.

_-EDMIX-_3703d ago

@Gangster- Great point. I would love to see day where its the norm to have episodes released the same day as the full release as to give users options.

Games either need to go up in price or find other methods of making money, we can't just have consumers feeling like its this gamble.

If its worth full price, let that concept be known AFTER options have been lade out. Consider how badly RE6 was received, yet many bought RE5.

Its hard to gauge how many hated RE5 due ot its high sales.

As we don't know how many hated it upon release when they bought it. I hated it and returned it, but the sale of my copy will still stand.

Thats a problem. Publishers doesn't know how poorly the title is being received. Consumers would rather WAIT and buy USED instead of give the publisher money.

Your format of epiodes and full releases helps this situation deeply.

Consumer gets to try a large portion of the game at a lower cost and pay as they go, publisher gets money day 1, the install base is more solid as the number of people who bought the game day 1 full price can now truly be represented.

The folks who hated RE5, can't be seen as a number only until RE6 releases and fails.

This helps us as consumers, helps the publisher with cost, its a win win.

@Jmac-agreed. We can get bad titles from publishers asking $60 day 1, take it or leave it, with nothing to try it out other then their word.

Those who keep fighting for day 1 full price...

Why limit options? We can still buy day 1 full price when made ready, but what good is it doing gamers to not have any other way exist other then the most expensive? As if we never got bad games as full price.

You guys know I'm a HUGE supporter of Star Wars BF...

Would you guys have liked THAT GAME to be full price as suppose to this method? At least in parts you could get you don't like it as much as you thought.

I'm sorry but its a win win.

I semi-agree...
I personally don't give a sh*t if they want to release a game in 5 or 6 parts -It's not even going to be on my radar until it's a released as a full, complete game at a regular price. Until then, I regard it as just another game that's still in development.
I detest the start/stop/start again spread out over a year or more... it destroys immersion and eventually I'll lose interest.

_-EDMIX-_3703d ago

They actually still releasing a full game this fall....

You don't need to buy any of the episodes. I didn't with Resident Evil Revelations 2...still got the disk based version day 1. Consider I actually watch shows not episode per episode but I actually just wait til the season is done and watch it in one sitting.

I mean....that doesn't mean you have a incomplete show, that doesn't mean your forced to wait as you are not really forced to watch, you could merely just wait til the ending of the season and enjoy.

Kalebninja3703d ago

Theres nothing wrong with episodic games. You don't want to get it by episodes then wait for it to fully release. Its similar to those that dont like watching shows when they are on tv and wait for them to go on netflix to binge them.

pumpactionpimp3703d ago

Or they can go with the industry standard of years past. You know, release a full game when it's ready, charge a one time fee, announce no dlc, and don't put micro transactions in it. Then if it sells well you could maybe make dlc for more profit. You know, instead of this new model of piss as many people off as we can, as quick as possible, just to see how much money we can squeeze out of people.

OrangePowerz3702d ago (Edited 3702d ago )

In years past development was much cheaper. While games got a lot more expensive to make the retail price didn't change much. The games are still being released as full games just with the difference that additional content is being planned out earlier in the development cycle.

I love as example the old LucasArts adventures, look at the credits and you see how small the teams had been and there isn't much difference in retail price on release between that game and games now and they had been dirt cheap to make conpared to now where even indie games can cost a lot more to make and require bigher teams.

pumpactionpimp3702d ago

@orange powerz. I don't disagree with what you're saying at all. So like I said, charge me up front, or find a way to make games cheaper. Which is a concept every other industry in the world has followed. These new ideas aren't just about development costs, although I believe it is a part of it. But more a way to bleed people of their money.

Every game that's eaten up with half the content, or has an inflated season pass, or makes a bundle on microtransactions, is a step in the wrong direction for gamers. We are encouraging by buying in to it.

If they want to charge more for games, fine, I will pay if the games worth it. But developers/producers/whoever makes marketing decisions, are no longer concerned with making good games. They just want to push a product out the door regardless of quality or content. Gta5 has made outrageous money. Yet no single player dlc. Multiplayer dlc is free. And microtransactions only elevate the grind for money. Why? Because it's a great game, so people bought it.

Then look at battlefront, and almost anything from ea and ubisoft recently. Clearly rushed, half the content, season passes that cost almost the price of the game, and even microtransactions sometime. Then make it a yearly release, and they're left wondering why sales figures are plummeting below expectations. It's simple. They want to make a product for a consumer. They don't want to make a game, that is enjoyable.

But if you believe it's simply development costs, be my guest. I think they should look at the quality of what they're putting out personally. Many examples of quality games reaching far above expected figures, and hyped trash falling in to the waste basket where it belongs.

sullynathan3703d ago

I'm really not sure why you brought up narrative when talking about a hitman game, nevertheless you could always wait for all parts of the game to be released before playing.

skycaptin53703d ago

Narrative is important to any game, other AAA publishers/developers may view this as a practical model and split campaign oriented titles up in a similar fashion which is something I'm against.

sullynathan3703d ago

Narrative was not important to Hitman until Absolution and we saw how that turned out.

_-EDMIX-_3703d ago

@Sully- Agreed.

@Skycap- Hitman isn't as much about story or narrative as much as you might think.

I used to think that, but after playing Absolution, I realize its more so about the hits not about the story, the story in Hitman literally isn't that much of a big deal.

Its cool yes....its not really why I would play a hitman game for. After Absolution, I'm fine with a Hitman that is just about the hits.

Love the series, but its not really about the story or "narrative" for me.

I mean...like Sully stated you could just wait til its done.

I did that with Resident Evil Revelations 2, yet I lived lol.

skycaptin53703d ago

Again, not quite the point I'm trying to make in regards to Hitman specifically having narrative. I'm trying to point out that doing this sort of thing and having it be successful will most likely be applied to other games. That will then affect those that have a stronger focus on narrative.

_-EDMIX-_3702d ago

@Sky-"That will then affect those that have a stronger focus on narrative"

Yet Walking Dead exist? I'm sorry bud, but you could just wait if its such a big deal. Mind you, others have brought up great points about the possibility of merely having multiple options day 1.

ie episodic format and regular full format.

You don't need to play it that way, no on is forcing you, they didn't just make 1 option and 1 option only.

That is like saying a show shouldn't air every week because of its narrative....

As if you can't just wait til its down to watch it end per end.

As if you can't buy the collection.

As if you can't merely NOT WATCH IT WEEK BY WEEK.

I'm sorry but its a dumb point, that makes no sense. Really, really focus on what your saying bud...

Stop trying to tell others how they should play their games.

This is merely an option, its not THE ONLY METHOD to buy or play the game, its merely an option.

Its releasing this fall as a disk based game if you want to play it that way.

Someone else playing it in chunks months at a time is none of my business.

That doesn't affect me and has nothing to do with me, even slightly.

Could you not use the same argument about a tv show? Are TV shows being hurt by releasing every week that have a strong focus on narrative? lol as if you couldn't just watch it in one sitting at a later date.

The points against it are not only dumb, most of them are weak and don't even factor that its merely an option.

I'm not sure why less and more money would be better..

PhoenixUp3703d ago

That's what I'm saying. Square Enix shouldn't be trying this practice with Hitman and the FFVII remake

It’s the 25th anniversary this year?

I’d have assumed it would have gotten something like a remastered trilogy of the original games or a remake of the first game. Something for a 25th celebration.
