Splatoon has been insanely successful for Nintendo, but the real question is "why?" Akia of NintendoEnthusiast shares his thoughts.

Nintendo has recently restored Wii U Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon online after five months of being offline.

Game Rant Writes "Mar10 Day is a fun yearly celebration of the Super Mario series, and Splatoon may warrant a fan-designated day of celebration in its own right."

How, exactly, did Splatoon reach heights rivalled only by Pokémon in Japan? New IPs from the House of Mario appear as often as shiny Pocket Monsters, yet typically move comparatively mediocre numbers or fall into relative obscurity behind the premium marques of Mario, Animal Crossing, Zelda, and Pokémon. Take Pikmin and ARMS, for example, which we adore but struggle to compete with the tentpole franchises when it comes to sales numbers or mainstream mindshare.
So, again, how has Splatoon risen to become one of Nintendo's most important series in Japan?
Because - like most Nintendo IP's - it brought a freshness and new way of looking at a tired genre. Look at any other 3rd person shooter, now look at Splatoon, now look at any other 3rd person shooter...see!?
Not played it myself but its successful because its probably fun ? What a stupid article title
For different reasons. Some more fetish than others...
But I personally enjoyed the fresh take on an overdeveloped genre.
It's successful because its a great twist on a very popular but bland genre.
It takes a lot of elements from some of the best shooters on the market but completely "freshes" it up wit its own unique movement system and changes the "kill, kill, kill" philosophy of the shooting with its paint based gameplay that works as the objective of marking your turf, claiming your turf, providing you with movement options and even working as an indicator to where the enemy is located based on the colors.
Killing or "splatting" as they call it is still very important in Splatoon but the objective is even more so and it pushes players to play the objective more than other shooters like Call of Duty kinda fails to do in comparison.
PS, not knocking CoD.
