Because - like most Nintendo IP's - it brought a freshness and new way of looking at a tired genre. Look at any other 3rd person shooter, now look at Splatoon, now look at any other 3rd person shooter...see!?

Wallstreet373773d ago

"like most nintendo ips" "freshness" once you said that and i remembered your name, i knew we had a winner comment lol

Before Splatton which isnt all that fresh or innovative, its still an fps at its core Nintendo hasnt been innovative on the software front for yearssssss. They have been getting hammered since the SNES days for lack of innovation in software. Meanwhile you had the Journeys, Little Big Planets, Mod Nation racers, Warhawk, Starhawks, MLb The Show, and now Dreams, Wild, and many others of the world innovating and on the competition.

Nintendo is best known for ips such as Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda which we have a thousand versions of. Many have turned their back on Nintendo because of this lack of taking risks and relying on old established ips, not due to this innovation you claim "like most Nintendo ips" lol

Either way Splatoon seems to be a good game and i will pick up one day.

Splatoon is Fun, That's Why.

gamerb63773d ago

Lol always at least one delusional Sony fanboy in every Nintendo related article.

These Sony fanboys seem to show a lot of interest in something that apparently isn't innovative and that they don't care much about etc... Lol

One word for a Sony fanboy and that's "SAD"

Splatoon is a breath of fresh air and deserves to be successful.

Wallstreet373773d ago (Edited 3773d ago )

@ never4get....

I bet it is and ill be buying it eventually.

@gamerb6...

Do you know how butthurt you sound? Sorry dude i dont blindly follow or throw hyperbole around hyping up my console of choice, i just spit facts. Read my comment and youll see i said it seems like a good game and criticism was not at the game but at the false comment of "like most nintendo ips" and "innovative" thats compleet bs and far from the truth lol

Im not a fanboy of any console and am a multi console owner, i just call a spade a spade :). Contrary to your comment i am indeed interested in Splatoon and any quality game offered on any console regardless of innovation. Thank you however for your blindly following and Nintendo is the bestest comment lol sadly that is why they are in the predicament they are in now with low sales. Consumers have been shielding their close minded, traditional mentality and have condoned their lack of risky ips or variety for years, always giving excuses for them.

gamerb63773d ago

I took your advice and you are clearly a Sony fanboy. Your comment history stinks of Sony is the greatest and everything you say is influenced by sales.
I guess your a Justin bieber fan aswell as by your logic whatever sells the most is the best.
You got a lot to learn quality over Quantity.

You'd get more respect if you were just honest about your fanboyism instead of pretending to be a real gamer.

Wallstreet373773d ago (Edited 3773d ago )

@gamerb6...

lol hahahahahahahahaha lol wow good comeback dude, you got me man /s lol

No im a fanboy of truth and quality overall. These comments were never in regards t the quality of Splatoon because i staed it sounds good, it was because you cant stomach the fact that some people dont blindly follow Nintendo and call everything they call innovative lol when its just not true on the software front anymore.

Thanks for the response again. I bet if i didnt have a life and actually followed your comment history i would see you praise everything Nintendo lol hahahahaha and blindly follow.

gamerb63773d ago

Lol its ironic you state people blindly following Nintendo when you do the exact same thing with sony. Lol what's that word again? Mmmm oh yeah hypocrite. Lol

Better luck next fanboy d;o) hope you get some help with your obsession of hating Nintendo dude. I know you can beat this obsession. We're all here to help and support you dude.

Get well soon, no need to thank me for my comment, its the least I can do.

Wallstreet373773d ago (Edited 3773d ago )

@gamerb....

hahahahahahahaha good try Luigi but they are inanimate objects, its not that serious i just talk turth.

I always love the Nintendo fanboys logic "well if you dont like Nintendos every move your a delusional fanboy" You do know most gamers grew up with Nintendo consoles in their home right? Im 37 and had Turbografx, Nintendo and Sega in my house. Next question, ask yourself this. If most people grew up Nintendo fans why have they lost so many diehards and supporting sales? Hmmmmm oh right because their the bestest in the world lol If im a fan, grew up on nintendo, own a Wiiu yet im a troll and Sony fanboy because i call bs on some comments about innovation. Check mate buddy, try harder.

Hypocrit, blind follower, its a shame. I dont have a problem criticizing Sony for things they do wrong also like ending up charging for Mp use, like initially selling joysticks which wear down quick on the controls, etc.... Im not you dude.

Ppl like you have let Nintendo get away with murder, regurgitated ips and weak hardware, always complacent and the yes men of the world. Thank god gamers have sent Nintendo a strong message of intolerance (now hopefully things change for the better)

higgins783773d ago

Using a name (Mario, for example) does not equate to the same game repeated. SMW, Mario 64, SMG...see?? I could go on...

It's just pure fun.

After a while, it wasn't what I was looking for and I returned it along with a ton of my other Wii U games in anticipation of the NX....I wanted to get as much store credit at Gamestop as possible at the time and did get a bunch. $200+ to put towards NX.

* I then got Halo 5 and played that a ton for about a month but I'm already sick of that and realize that Splatoon was actually more fun for me than Halo 5.

* I think splatoon is a good building block towards a much better game in Splatoon 2, which will most likely release on the NX at some point considering the success of Splatoon.

Having a colorful game also helps.

In a world full of bland boring darkish colors, having some bright colorful colors with solid art style helps keep thinking pleasing to look at match after match.

GordonKnight3771d ago

I second that!

Halo has always been my shooter game. I've been playing splatoon a lot more than Halo 5. Both are a lot of fun, I just take Halo way too serious.

Splatoon is even fun when your the worst player on the field.

sprinterboy3773d ago

Not played it myself but its successful because its probably fun ? What a stupid article title

deafdani3773d ago

There are plenty of fun games that aren't successful, though. :P

sprinterboy3773d ago

@deaf
Meant to also say fun game, word of mouth = success kinda lol, brains not working today

rainslacker3773d ago

Not only is it fun, but it's accessible. Unlike most FPS, it doesn't involve intense themes or bloody violence that would be off-putting to some, yet it retains some of the elements which make a good FPS, thus it's going to be enjoyed by more than one group of people.

Metallox3773d ago

I don't find it stupid, really the success of Splatoon has been a surprise for many people across the web. Right after its announcement in 2014, many people claimed it would sell equally or even worse than The Wonderful 101.

Today, however, it has sold 10 times that number.

DiscoKid3773d ago

For different reasons. Some more fetish than others...

But I personally enjoyed the fresh take on an overdeveloped genre.

Dravidian3773d ago

I think you meant "fresh" my friend lol.

Loadedklip3773d ago

It's successful because its a great twist on a very popular but bland genre.

It takes a lot of elements from some of the best shooters on the market but completely "freshes" it up wit its own unique movement system and changes the "kill, kill, kill" philosophy of the shooting with its paint based gameplay that works as the objective of marking your turf, claiming your turf, providing you with movement options and even working as an indicator to where the enemy is located based on the colors.

Killing or "splatting" as they call it is still very important in Splatoon but the objective is even more so and it pushes players to play the objective more than other shooters like Call of Duty kinda fails to do in comparison.

PS, not knocking CoD.

Why Is Splatoon So Popular In Japan?

How, exactly, did Splatoon reach heights rivalled only by Pokémon in Japan? New IPs from the House of Mario appear as often as shiny Pocket Monsters, yet typically move comparatively mediocre numbers or fall into relative obscurity behind the premium marques of Mario, Animal Crossing, Zelda, and Pokémon. Take Pikmin and ARMS, for example, which we adore but struggle to compete with the tentpole franchises when it comes to sales numbers or mainstream mindshare.

So, again, how has Splatoon risen to become one of Nintendo's most important series in Japan?
