Undertale Review - IGN

"I finished my first playthrough of Undertale in stunned silence. My journey had begun with dumb puns and silly puzzles, but the end affected me in a way I never expected. That’s kind of Undertale’s specialty — playing with our expectations of what an RPG should be, subverting them, and using them to drive a story unique to what games can do. Its strong writing, integration of gameplay with storytelling, and acute understanding of its audience all build to something that surprises at every turn."By Kallie Plagge

The only award this game should win is The Most Overrated Game of All Time Award. pfft better than Ocarina of Time?..give me a break.

ShadowKnight3772d ago (Edited 3772d ago )

No it's not better than Ocarina of Time IMO. This is IGN opinion and review. But it's still a decent game though

mikeslemonade3772d ago

It's better than Her Story, that's for damn sure.

I would agree with a 88. Now taking into consideration the game is like by like 1 or 2 people and is $10.

Bansai3772d ago (Edited 3772d ago )

I still remember their Godhand review, just awful. They probably saw the commotion around this game and decided to make a few bucks by giving it 10, reinforcing everybody's boner.

I finished the game, it's awesome, but it doesn't deserve a perfect score.

-Foxtrot3772d ago

Yeah I'm liking it so far but that line made me think "WTF". Opinions sure and hey, lets be honest there will be games better then Ocarina of Time, some we have now but at least in a discussion you could debate it...with Undertale I don't think I could argue the case despite being good.

I think Undertale has been one of those games which have came out while being under the radar, it ends up being pretty decent, people get talking about it, this talk becomes huge news and everyone wants to go into it already thinking it's amazing and comes out thinking the same because everyone else is doing the same. You know..."I like it because everyone else likes it and I don't want to say I don't because I don't want to be torn to bits over my different opinion..."

aquaticDonut3772d ago

As someone who played it without hearing much about it, I completely disagree. The game stands out on its own merit thanks in large part to its lovable characters and clever and heartwarming writing. Even TotalBiscuit loves it and gave it his GOTY and he usually doesn't much care for story in games.

You're just making a large generalization that's never really the case. People going in with great expectations usually leads to the opposite - being kind of underwhelmed. That's what normally happens to me atleast.
Some people just really liked it, period. That's all. The whole 'my opinion should be like everyone elses' applies no more than it does to any other game.

Every game has a particular value in the eye's of the beholder. Undertale in particular speaks to those people, not everyone may see things the same.

DragonDDark3772d ago

Plus, games like Bloodborne and Witcher get 9s... and this gets a 10... wot.

Lamboomington3772d ago

Score comparisons make no sense... at all. The sooner you realize this the better.

Undertale isn't pitted against The Witcher 3 when they give it a score. They give it an arbitrary number based on the experience itself. Sure, there will always be some level of comparison, but that depends on soooo many factors.

Saying "This got a 10" but "that other game got a 9" is silly. It means nothing. Not to mention the reviewers are often completely different people !

Grap3772d ago

the score system is broken, MGSV gets 10 and fallout 4 gets 9.5, and the game of the year(witcher 3) gets 9.3, like WTF???

goldwyncq3772d ago (Edited 3772d ago )

It deserves a 9 at the very least. And it's nowhere near the most overrated game of all time, that distinction goes to Journey.

DragonDDark3772d ago

Journey fans weren't on every YouTube video complaining about things you missed. And if you say one negative thing about UnderTale, they will wish you death.

NewsForSnowflakes3772d ago (Edited 3772d ago )

Haha. I love how salty people still are about that.

Takwin3771d ago

I tried it and thought it was kind of cool, but very boring.

7/10 and they did tryhard that is for sure.

destroyerz13771d ago

Games reviews = Personal Opinion

Remember that.

I just can't get into it. The humour is just so random that it becomes more annoying than funny. I like the little mini games in battles though..the music is nice too.

sullynathan3772d ago

I have yet to play this game so take my comment with a grain of salt but I highly doubt that this game is a 10/10 masterpiece.

It seems IGN has fallen again for a popular game that the internet loves so they have to give it a good score or else they look bad.

aquaticDonut3772d ago

10/10 doesn't mean it's perfect. It means it's an amazing must-play. And it is.

-Foxtrot3772d ago (Edited 3772d ago )

Urm...a full score is a perfect score usually given to perfect games

If it was given out for must plays you would see a shit load more 10/10 games. There's a reason sites always go for the 9.2, 9.5 or 9.8 in their reviews because even if the game is fantastic it's still not quite there to being what they deem as perfect

aquaticDonut3772d ago (Edited 3772d ago )

@-FoxTrot Oh, really? Tell me what are these magical games that have absolutely no flaws in any form? Games that are so good that no game could ever, EVER be better. That's what perfect means and such a thing does not exist nor could it ever exist. If 10/10 was supposed to be perfect than it would mean it's a rating that isn't supposed to be used. Hell, I can't even count how many times many reviewers have tried to get across to the audience that that's not what 10/10 means, especially IGN.

sullynathan3772d ago

10/10 is a masterpiece something I doubt this game is.

alexgibson3771d ago

How much somebody likes a game is completely subjective. Therefore, scoring a game out of 50 or 100, to a decimal place is absurd.

I like Hitman Absolution -Its a 8/10 game. What is the point in me stating its 8.1 vs another game like Tomb Raider which is an 8.2. Who gives a shite? They are both 8/10 games and making it more calculated than that is silly.

10/10 means its a standout title. It has nothing to do with it being perfect.

HammadTheBeast3771d ago

Not really Foxtrot, Last of Us and Witcher 3 got tons of 10/10's but they do have glaring flaws. However, they are amazing games, and worthy of the score, and should be played by everyone.

'I have yet to play this game so take my comment with a grain of salt'

That sums up most of your comments about games.

sullynathan3771d ago

yeah right. Take your butthurt somewhere else.

Nivekki3771d ago

'yeah right. Take your butthurt somewhere else.'

I don't care about this game, I just care that you talk crap about games when you've never played them. You've made a habit of it and I like to call you out on it.

If anyone's butthurt it's probably you.

I've played this game as well, I didn't like it that much but I at least played it and have an understanding of what the game is. You just have an opinion of a game you've never played.

Like I said, that sums up your comments.

sullynathan3771d ago

you pulled things out of your ass because you're butthurt.

Lamboomington3772d ago (Edited 3772d ago )

Or maybe the reviewer just really liked it enough to give it a 10/10. Is that ever an option ? No, not on the n4g comments. Always silly score comparisons and the like. Some game which is popular among these users gets 7/10 - "OMG clickbait, bashing, fanboys"

other game that they don't like gets 10/10 "Losing credibility" "The Witcher got 9 and this 10 ?"
"IGN falling for popular game and giving it a good score just to follow the trend"

Please, please, stop this, and take a review score for what it is. Just because you disagree with it, don't assume it's a result of a shitty reviewing process.

It's just illogical and hypocritical. The score comparisons especially. They make no sense, they mean nothing.

sullynathan3771d ago

I'm not comparing scores at all. This game could be great for what it is but a masterpiece is something I'm not seeing.

goldwyncq3772d ago

It's loved by many gamers for a reason. Play it and see for yourself. Don't let some crazy fans deter you from doing so and just give the game a chance. You might change your mind about it once it's over.

sullynathan3771d ago

I don't let fans deter me from playing a game.

Nivekki3771d ago

'I don't let fans deter me from playing a game.'

He just doesn't play the games in the first place, he prefers to talk crap about games he's never played.

I love Undertale, but it's super overrated. Regardless, I'm glad it's been successful.
