Should MMO Classes Be Gender-Locked

Identity politics is once again rearing its head in the realm of mmo games. A great deal of hype and anticipation has built up over the last year over the development of Black Desert Online. A lot of players have been eagerly looking forward to the sandbox mmo being released in the West, but that hopeful anticipation has turned into howls of protest from some gamers. The reason for this is that it's become known that there will be mmo gender locked classes to be had. Debates have broken out on various social media sites on the suitability (or lack thereof) of having gender locked mmo classes in today's social environment. The question is: should there be mmo gender locked classes or not?

You cant even complain if its part of the games lore. Like witches and warlocks they are gender based.

Get_A_Job_Foxtrot3785d ago

Yeah but if they have different abilities, due yo gender alone, then it's stupid. Unless yhe game will allow you to change genders at will, I guess.

DiscoKid3786d ago

Depends on the class, really.

ZaWarudo3786d ago

It makes more sense to race lock certain classes, not so much for gender.

Roccetarius3786d ago

Today's social environment shouldn't even matter. If they want to design the classes like that, then they should.

The thing with Black Desert, is that there's both a male and female version of a class, but with some differences in skills. this has been known for a long time, except by those living under a rock and just seeing the game now.

I hope they don't cave into the minority, and certainly not those who can't even decide their gender.

the correct answer is to let the players be able to acquire your gender information.

I don't agree with that. I WISH I could agree with that. But buying habits and customer opinions prove otherwise

We've seen developers in the AAA space try new things and ideas. More often than not, the customers aren't willing to give things a chance, or not enough people buy into the project for it to grow.

Creativity works better in the indie space because the budgets, pressures, and expectations aren't the same.

it's a nice idea and it worked during the PS2/PS3-era when AAA didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. smaller budgets and shorter development time left room for more creativity and more risk. a game didn't need to sell 4 million+ copies to break even. things are different now.

This is the guy who bragged about crunching his staff and having them work through the night. Crunch culture has lost more talent and done more damage to the industry than any other factor. Screw him.
