Mass Effect Andromeda: Redefining Story-Telling

The time is ripe for Bioware to try something different

I'm pretty convinced at this point that there is no new Mass Effect and we are going to buy the game and end up watching a Bioware employee talk about how amazing it is for 12 hours. Seriously they talk too much and are going to have another ME3 and DAI on their hands. They need to show something or shut up and wait to show it.

sullynathan3787d ago

Did you read the article or did you come to make a dumb comment?

Khaotic3787d ago

I'm sure it was the latter as hes implying DAI was a horrible game. Mass Effect 3 was great with a very unliked ending.

Khaotic3787d ago

What? Didn't Dragons Age Inquisition win game of the year awards. Thats beside the point Inquisition was a great game and critically acclaimed.

Clown_Syndr0me3787d ago

Was it really? I never got past The Hinterlands. I'm a completionist coo didn't want to move on until it was all done, but felt like an MMORPG with no other players so lost interest too quickly.
Maybe I should give it another go?

Khaotic3787d ago

I put like 200 hours into. You have to like those types of games. I really got into the story and crafting. You can skip some of the side quests but some are important to leveling. Alot of my friends put large amounts of time into it as well.

Summons753787d ago

Except it wasn't really a great game. It felt like they were going to make an MMO then decided not to at the last minute. It was certainly much better than DA2 but they promised it'd be more like Origins and go back to the roots but all we got was an offline mmo. It was OKAY at best.

Sly-Lupin3787d ago

DAI was great in many respects... but terrible in many others.

Most notably the writing.
I feel like Bioware has just completely given up on the whole idea of a narrative arc, or villain.

Paytaa3787d ago

2014 was a disappointing year for gaming. Dragon Age just happened to be one of the better ones but it wasn't like this super amazing game. The Witcher 3 did everything better half a year later.

NewAgeisHere3787d ago

It was pretty terrible, first game in a long time I actually didn't bother finishing........

kraenk123787d ago

DAI was the worst Bioware game ever. The writing was so shallow and much worse than Origins and DA2. The whole game felt like an offline MMO.
Because of that I won't put my hopes up for MEA.

Khaotic3787d ago

Eveybody is entitled to their own opinioins. But either its just another game thats cool to hate on or the very very small vocal minority came out in force to say how bad they thought it was.

Antifan3787d ago

I looked at the trophy listing on PS4. 60% of players didn't even close the first big breach, and that's only 10% of the game.
Too much grind fest in DAI, not enough narrative storytelling, too many useless side quest with no narrative. But not a horrible game, just not Bioware's best, and definitely not their worst.
DA2 will always be their worst effort.

Khaotic3787d ago (Edited 3787d ago )

I have to remember not everbody has my tastes. It was fashioned after older pc rpgs, which do not hold hold much sway with console gamers today. It sold really well no matter what people think of it. It was enough they put out good dlc for it. I always liked the rpg grinds but im old school
Bioware has made some unpopular games but they have also made some great games

applepie_svk3785d ago (Edited 3785d ago )

I believe that DA:I shouldn´t get the GOTY, it shouldn´t be even nominated, it won only because it was a bigger AAA title of the year amongs the RPGs that won the market, but award was not based on its atributes like overall quality, storytelling, story, game mechanics etc.

At 2014 should be the winner either Divinity or Dark Souls 2. Divinity build this old-school and yet very funny and interesting world, with fine combat mechanics and a lot of variabilities of how to deal with stuff and progress thru game. Dark Souls pretty much went with what was already estabilished with previous game and it was success.

However DA:I went from great DA:O and mediocre DA2 into atrocious Inquisition. Characters were terrible, story was stupid, some of the zones in this big world were there there just for sake of loot, and ending hiden in the DLC... ah yes, totally deserving GOTY. The only at least strong attribute of DAI was combat, despite the fact that tactical camera for PC players was nothing more than a buzzword.

What is hillarious about BioWare is their ability to write a story, they´ve pretty much accomplished to do great stuff with SW:TOR for a MMO, which has more and deeper signle player story driven experience than DA:I with all DLCs...

Khaotic3785d ago (Edited 3785d ago )

Once again i respect your opinion but reviewers, metacritic and most of the gaming population including myself and 8 people i personally know would think that statement absurd. Im done discussing this topic because the only ones commenting are the very small handful of people that didnt like it.

What a silly comment ...

(unless you are a 15yo of course)

Khaotic3787d ago (Edited 3787d ago )

Lol

Can't wait to play Mass Effect: Andromeda.

There aren't that many sci-fi RPG's out there, and while Mass Effect isn't 100% RPG, it's enough of one to fit within the genre.

PhucSeeker3786d ago (Edited 3786d ago )

Some guy writing an article about what he wants in the new Mass effect => Omg, stop talking and start showing the game ffs.

Nice one, mate. Next time try reading the article before commenting.

antz11043786d ago

Lol seriously? DAI was a fantastic game and up until the last half hour so was ME3.

sullynathan3787d ago

I doubt the game will be about saving the world again seeing as how different the new premise is.

Kreisen3787d ago

I certainly agree that ME4 cannot just be about the player vs some big baddie. Nothing can really trump the Reapers, they need go in a different direction entirely.

Sly-Lupin3787d ago

TBH, I think the ideal Mass Effect game is an episodic thing where you hop from one self-contained story/planet to another, just being a Space Cop Jedi.

Halo4isTrash3787d ago

duuuuuuurrr - Bad impression at awesome reaper sound.

Antifan3787d ago

Agreed. The Reapers are the most terrifying villain in all of sci-fi. I have to give it to Bioware, they definitely know how to do villains.

Perjoss3787d ago

The reason they haven't shown anything yet: Mass Effect Andromeda is not the real project, its just the code name for KotOR 3.

Khaotic3787d ago

Yeah you wish, but with EA having licensing rights and bioware is under them you never know for the future.

Kreisen3787d ago

Im guessing that new studio set up by Jade Raymond will probably be working on KOTOR 3.

Although it would be awesome if EA had Bioware working on KOTOR 3 for years now and we get some epic gameplay trailer this E3 with a release for late 2016(a man can dream)

_-EDMIX-_3787d ago

@Kreisen-
Also Jade Raymond's team is confirmed to be working with a visceral not Bioware.

Bioware is already confirmed to be working on a Star Wars game currently.

http://venturebeat.com/2015...

http://gamerant.com/electro...

So no guess work need, its already been confirmed where Jade is helping at, its been confirmed the 3 teams making Star Wars games.

Bioware making a Star Wars game easily points to KOTOR or something KOTOR related in terms of gameplay, could even be the New Republic lolz.

KOTNR =)

didn't mean to double post.

sullynathan3787d ago

Disney said everything that isn't the star wars movies is non canon. It's the reason why battlefront has to be rebooted instead of being battlefront 3.

_-EDMIX-_3787d ago

It's not Battlefront 3 because they never made the first two games it was also never supposed to be a continuation of the series as the concept is the same the team again didn't it make the first two games.

Disney also consider these things to be canon:

Star Wars Clone Wars animated series
Star Wars Rebels animated series
Star Wars: A New Dawn (prequel novel to SW Rebels)

Just provide me with another cool 40 hour experience and I am sold

For All Its Flaws, Mass Effect: Andromeda's Approach to Romance is Something ME4 Can Learn From

While Mass Effect: Andromeda was let in several key areas, one of its approaches to romances is something Mass Effect 4 should consider revisiting.

I hope Mass Effect 4 ignores the inferior prequels and instead closely follows the far superior Mass Effect: Andromeda and Dragon Age Inquisition.

anast489d ago (Edited 489d ago )

Mass Effect 4 should just make Mass Effect 1 but better with current tech. Fans would be happy. As far as romance, they should take notes from the Witcher and Cyberpunk.

Ristul489d ago

Later Bioware games have to little build up. You can have a normal conversation and all of a sudden BAM! The character you talk to becomes super flirty.

TricksterArrow488d ago

Reminds me of Baldur’s Gate. I wanted to practice some magic and Gale made it super weird. Not even gonna mention Astarion.

gold_drake488d ago (Edited 488d ago )

iii dunno about that.

the only really great and funny dating partner, is that outlaw guy anyways haha he was funny as hell.

other than that, i found every character to be very annoying.

ZeekQuattro488d ago

Shout out to Keri the Asari reporter. Current relationship status be damned as she's game either way. Anything for a good story. 🤣

Mass Effect Companion Tier Ranking

One of the best things about the Mas Effect series is the companions you meet along the way. So here is a tier list of all the companions from Mass Effect!

IAMRealHooman530d ago

Bro missing companions: Legion, Grunt, Samara/Morinth, Javik, EDI

anast530d ago

Legion, Zaeed, and Jack are my favorites.

RiseNShine530d ago

To think that Bioware at some point was capable of doing games like this, you see those characters and remember them like good old friends, and now check ME Andromeda, Anthem, Veilguard etc and wonder what the hell happened.

anast530d ago

They lost too much talent.

IAMRealHooman530d ago

some in andromeda are decent, I agree with peebee and Vetra being good companions. Except Liam he's trash tier

anast530d ago

Liam lol I can't stand that dude.

it's like bitch but your shirt back on, your not blue or spikey get away from me

BioWare Thinks Mass Effect Andromeda Was Better Game Than Reception Suggested

BioWare thinks Mass Effect: Andromeda was a better game than what reception suggested; taught the studio not to shoehorn open-world without any meaningful content in it.

thorstein565d ago

I played it and it wasn't as bad as people said. Is it in the 8-10 range? No.

It's a 6-7, which means it's a solid game.

LordoftheCritics565d ago (Edited 565d ago )

Veilguard and Andromeda are of similar level to me.
6 to 6.5 ish

Though I think i enjoyed Andromeda's combat and sense of scale a little bit more.

XBManiac565d ago

Veilguard has better graphics.

neutralgamer1992565d ago

I agree with you It was a 6.5 type game. Gameplay was solid everything else was lacking. Playing at launch with all the issues was just absurd. EA could have let the developers keep patching and fix the game but they stopped just like they did with anthem. It’s crazy to think multi billion dollar publishers can’t afford to keeping patching their games get medium size developers can support the game for years

But when you have android wilson running the company what else can we expect.

OtterX565d ago

Except 6-7 doesn't translate as solid. 6 means a bit flimsy, but still good/enjoyable if you can look past the flaws. 7, a little less flimsy, and enjoyable. 8-10 would be "solid".

But I get your point. I skipped the game entirely, so I don't have an opinion on it.

H9565d ago

I played this game back when I wanted to give every game I bought a fair chance and finish it, it was the reason why I stopped doing so, god the game was bad

TheNamelessOne565d ago

I actually enjoyed Andromeda. It wasn't a 10/10, by any means, but I played it years after the fact, after a lot of patching, and I had a good time with it.

anast565d ago

Same, I enjoyed it too. I might even replay it soon.

TheNamelessOne565d ago

Might do the same, honestly. Went through the trilogy a couple months back.

raWfodog565d ago

I liked it as well, and also played it for the first time over a year after it was released. The original trilogy was a better story overall IMO but I still enjoyed Andromeda.

lellkay565d ago

The game is so unbelivably bad, it's laughable.

pwnmaster3000565d ago (Edited 565d ago )

It really wasn’t. Well for me nd I’m a big fan of the series.
Was it mass effect standard? No
But overall I thought it was a decent game.
6-7/10.

Armaggedon565d ago

You might want to try playing a truly bad game. Go boot up two worlds or gollum to get the perspective you need

MatrixxGT565d ago

Wow, two worlds…red ringed my 360.

Armaggedon565d ago

Lol. Its one of the only games that I have experienced buyers remorse with. The only one I can think of is riders Republic.

matt139565d ago

So delusional, the title was an embarrassment to the original trilogy. it’s the equivalent of 2042 to the battlefield franchise.

thorstein565d ago

2042 had a redemption arc and what exists now is a pretty good FPS.
