Remembering Titanfall

Pixelgate.co.uk writes:

''Titanfall should have been a success. It had literally everything going for it. Strong marketing, exposure from across the media. Finding itself at the forefront of EA and Microsoft’s promotional material, Titanfall felt established prior to release. Things didn’t pan out as expected. Ultimately, the next big thing in multiplayer shooters, quickly faded.''

Game game boring real fast, not enough weapons and unlockables regretted buying this after about 3 hours of playing

PixelGateUk3751d ago

Took me about a month of solid play with friends. I enjoyed the game for that time but i never really felt complete. It's a shame really, could went onto better things

ThePope3751d ago

I play a few matches a week and never fail to find ones with good competition. So I would say it's was/is/and will continue to be a success.

Titanfall: It was hyped up as the second coming, yet it had bots in Ranked Competitive Multiplayer. It had no Campaign. It influenced CoD and others to add all that jetpack / running on walls nonsense on top of the killstreak reward/perks already in place. (And now that CoD has it, you can bet a bunch of wanna-bes will ruin their games with it, like if the masters of the one-off fluke, Insomniac, make another Resistance..) To make room for the Titans, the maps mostly seemed too spaced out, empty, and lifeless, giving it a very dated feel in that regard.. especially taking real players into consideration without the bots padding the player count.

In conclusion: Gabbage.

Tobsesan3751d ago

@EeJLP-

looks like someone never played it. The maps were perfect and the game was really great. Yes the unlockables werent that great, but it was a new ip and titanfall 2 should fix all that.

antz11043751d ago

Great game I still play it from time to time. Here's hoping there's a sequel with more content.

UnHoly_One3751d ago (Edited 3751d ago )

People still think there are "bots" in the multiplayer??

No.

No there isn't.

A bot is a computer controlled character made to take the place of a regular human player. Look the same, have the same abilities, etc...

Titanfall had AI controlled enemies that were completely different from a player character.

Saying Titanfall has bots is the same as saying every MOBA game has bots.

InactiveUser3751d ago (Edited 3751d ago )

We're not talking about MOBAs are we? We're talking about a supposed competitive multiplayer FPS that has relatively dumb, weak bots that can be used to pad stats or get bonus powerups (your titan) easier. Just because they're like beginner strength bots doesn't make them some completely different category of 'AI controlled characters'. Titanfall has bots. Titanfall has twice as many bots as the maximum player count (12 on each side compared to just 6v6 max player count). Any multiplayer with bots is immediately delegitimized. Titanfall has bots in it's main mode, which in other games would be a competitive mode. Titanfall by default is therefore non-competitive, which in turn makes it worthless and completely uninteresting in my personal opinion and that of gamers who enjoy a real competitive challenge. If I want to play a multiplayer FPS, I want to play against actual people and their true abilities and not have AI or bots affecting the outcome. Other games (like Killzone for example) have bots as an option. In Titanfall they are in the main mode, they are not an option, they make the game non-competitive, and therefore irrelevant to anyone who cares about having a real match against real people instead of phony, stat padded, fake matches with an inflated sense of accomplishment. It's like it's designed for children who don't have any level of maturity to be able to cope with defeat or a losing record (k/d).. everyone gets a participation ribbon.

Kleptic3751d ago

UnHoly_One:

bit of a reach, but ok, sure...Titanfall didn't have 'bots' by some arbitrary definition...

but it did have pointless fodder for the uninitiated to be proud of killing...

anyway you look at it...the game was far from competitively sound...It was 2014's battlefront; a game so wrapped up in being accessible to lesser skilled players...that for some reason find themselves diving into what used to be a competitive genre...that it was written off as a joke to those who enjoy playing multiplayer shooters and can tolerate even the slightest notion of a learning curve...

seriously...an automatic headshot pistol? The game already had a foot in the grave the day it released. It was the genre's current gen hand holder, which in retrospect isn't surprising considering who developed it...

UnHoly_One3751d ago

You're entitled to not like it, that's fine, but they aren't bots.

It's a different kind of game. It's not like every other FPS.

If you don't like it I understand that. It's not for you, that's fine.

But it isn't a regular FPS with bots. It's a different kind of game altogether, and more Moba than you care to admit.

Utalkin2me3751d ago

@UnHoly_One

If there is AI in multiplayer and it counts as kills and goes towards your overall score "It's Bots", doesn't matter how you try to define it.

Kleptic3751d ago

I'm not really talking about my own personal opinion, either...

very few liked it; its diminishing popularity over the course of weeks...fully illustrated that...

and you're kind of going in circles...'more moba than i care to admit'?...not even sure what that means...i'm not admitting, or ignoring, any of that...regardless, i fail to see any sort of 'moba' like attributes to the game anyway, other than some AI controlled 'not-bots' that players can engage in....

Those 'things' were added to multiplayer to give players of any skill level something to shoot at...nothing more...you're acting like it was some deliberate and methodical attempt to siphon off Dota 2 players...I like Dota, and thought Titanfall fell well short of what it could've been...so color me lost...

antz11043750d ago

Kleptic,

Very few liked it and it's popularity diminished in weeks? Really? Not only is that your personal opinion it's also completely unfounded. Game still has a solid fan base. If you don't like the game fine but there's no reason to exaggerate like that.

donthate3750d ago (Edited 3750d ago )

Best shooter this generation! Instead of focusing on stupid unlocks, it focuses on smooth gameplay.

Really looking forward to Titanfall sequel, and that PS4 owners get to try this gem. Next to Gears of War, and Mass Effect, Titanfall is my favorite!

Apart from my RTS addiction.

This game was highly rated on metacritic by both critics at 86% and a massive 6.4 user score (most games have much lower user satisfaction).

Irishguy953750d ago (Edited 3750d ago )

I can see why you don't like it kleptic. But well...yeah.. the 'bots' are minions. You can say the exact same thing about Dotas minions. They are so shit players won't get bored. But....they serve a purpose. The bots in Titanfall do too. This game is competitive. Just not in the same way counterstrike is competitive. Whoever can kill the most titans, players and minions. Wins the game. You can't win just by killing minions. If the enemy team is better..they are better.

Thats all there is too it. The probably with the game was lack of content and nothing else. The smart pistol, is not that good either, in fact if a player spots you and you have a smart pistol you are immediately at a disadvantage. You need time to lock on. The game is fast paced.

As for 'jet pack nonesense'

pff, that is a GREAT FUN aspect of Titanfall. By far the most fluid FPS in some time.

Now. In saying that. I am a counter strike fan myself. I thing CS GO is a great game and I wish more games tried to be that instead of titanfall. However, theres room for both. And I play both

Kleptic3750d ago

ok, ok, me saying 'no one liked it' was harsh...

but i stand by it being far from only a personal opinion of mine...

It was marketed to be the biggest thing in competitive mp since CoD took off, headed up by its creators...a game that used 'the power of the cloud' to the fullest...and would change the way fans of the genre think of modern multiplayer...

it released and, while yes, it has a 'solid' fan base...it wasn't a 10th of what many expected, and was well under what was promised as far as a water-shed mp experience...popularity was ok on the 360 with its massive install base, and the xbox one having literally nothing else to play at that point but the bugged out BF4...but it was largely skipped on PC...

so yes, people enjoyed it, and some people still play it...but its easy to sit here almost 2 years later and comment about it being a solid title...when at release it was a unanimous 'this is it?' from a huge portion of players looking forward to it...

while i by no means ate up the hype at the time, either...just pointing out the game is the opposite of a sleeper hit...its definitely decent at what it attempts...but its WAY under what the EA/MS PR machine was trumpeting at the time...

UnHoly_One3750d ago

I'm only one person and can't speak for all these hypothetical people that didn't like it, but I played Titanfall more, and for longer, than any other multiplayer FPS ever. I loved it.

Just because it wasn't some ultra competitive game that you think belongs in MLG doesn't mean squat to me or most other people. I played it a ton with my friends and we all had a blast.

It's not CoD. It isn't TRYING to be like CoD. It is it's own thing, and it's great.

Khaotic3751d ago

It was the first entry into a series by a small team by todays standards. Look at the first entries in COD, it was kinda the same. We just expect bigger and more cause thats what we are used to. Vince Zampella created the biggest blockbuster fps franchise in console history in cod. Titanfall was mechanically sound and innovative as well. The next entry will be like Modern warfare 2 was to MW. Imo Titanfall 2 will be the next shooter to replace cod. We will see though.

CoDsuperstar3751d ago

It will take them a few games to get it right. i was mega hyped before the game released, then when details came out my hype died and i skipped getting it.

titanfall 2 could be the next best thing, the talent is there, we'll have to wait and see.

PixelGateUk3751d ago

To be fair the first few Call of Duty title had great single player and multiplayer. United Offensive was fantastic.

Khaotic3751d ago

You mention United Offensive I believe developed by gray matter and not IW but yes i know the early cods were well received and i loved them as well. I'm just trying to say that as the series goes on I believe they will build upon each game with more content than before. IW tried to do something new with the story aspect and it was a bust. Heck i really liked the game and that part sucked for me

elitethinker3751d ago (Edited 3751d ago )

developers who made call 0f duty can't reeplace call of duty, that's like saying call of duty will replace call of duty.

Khaotic3751d ago

@elitethinker What? That makes no sense. I said the creators of cod. If you need it simplified. The devs who originally made cod the fps powerhouse it is today, that no longer actually work on cod anymore, but have started a new studio called respawn that created the Titanfall Ip. And that Ip has the CHANCE to replace cod as the dominant shooter on consoles. Did i go slow enough that time.

Paytaa3751d ago (Edited 3751d ago )

Even though Titanfall was very limited in content, it still set trends for future FPS games. The double jump and verticality was soon adopted by CoD (funny how the the original creators of CoD are still influencing it in some way), Halo 5, and even the new Doom has the double jump. Not to say Titanfall was the first to do it but it certainly made it a staple into this generation's shooters.

Even with the limited content that Titanfall offers, it's still one of the best FPS experiences I've had in a long time. It's fresh and has a lot of potential with future installments. I'm curious to see how legit competitive play would work in the game too.

Titanfall 2 could be the next CoD in terms of sheer popularity and addictive nature. I know I'll be purchasing it no matter what.

reallyNow3750d ago

umm what? COD2 is still the best WW2 single player campaign in an FPS that I've played.

Khaotic3750d ago

@reallynow and your entitled to your opinion. The 1srt 2 MW campaigns were my favorite. But you miss the point. The point is it usually takes a few entries to really get innovation down and make the series stand out. If you ask people what the best COD games are the majority will go with mw2 or black ops both later entries into the respected devs cod series.

3hrs seems like a bit of an exaggeration...but to each his own.

I do agree that there wasn't really enough there for the type of players who bought this game. I myself played it for a couple months frequently, and then came back here and there. I can still hop on and have fun, albeit short lived.

Overall great game, just light on content. I have high hopes for the next game. Should be my go-to "aderall-maniac shooter". For the mean time I have R6 Siege which has been a pleasant surprise and Halo 5 has been filling the more "fast-paced" gameplay cravings.

UncleJerry3750d ago (Edited 3750d ago )

ppl maybe get the wrong idea from my post...huge fan of the game. im just being honest that i understand where some ppl find it a little lacking. its one of the better fps games ive played in some time and i wil surely be getting the next installment.

RhymeNorReason3751d ago

How do stories that are not researched like this get approved? When is selling 10 million (no matter the platforms) considered not a success?
In October it was reported over 10 million were sold.

Majin-vegeta3751d ago

Maybe go do some actual research. It was 10 million users not copies sold.

Khaotic3751d ago

Rhymenorreason is right you got caught in the pr spin. But im sure it sold at least 5 million and thats still great

2pacalypsenow3750d ago

You can scourge the interwebs and never find sales numbers that say 10 million, just a tweeted photo that says 10 million. If they sold 10 million copies don't you think they would have released those numbers?

badboyz093751d ago (Edited 3751d ago )

Can't wait for the sequel

2pacalypsenow3751d ago (Edited 3751d ago )

Im wondering how the 2nd one will be

KiwiViper853751d ago

It'll be so awesome, pretty much the same game but with a few new mechs/weapons/maps...

But it'll be on PS4!!! Wooooooo

#BESTGAMEONPS4

reallyNow3750d ago

I doubt it will be as solid as BLOPS3..

FITgamer3751d ago

Honestly the grunts killed it for me. Also the fact that Attrition is pretty much the only game mode on anyone plays on PC, which is extremely boring.

Silly Mammo3750d ago

I bought it for the PC when it was on sale for $6.99. Played it for about a week and then forgot about it and haven't played it since.

2pacalypsenow3750d ago

Unfortunately I bought it on Origin when it was $59.99

showtimefolks3750d ago

it was a good first step for a new IP

but not having single player story when the universe is so interesting was a mistake.

also the game just needed more content, to a lot of people it got boring way too fast.

titanfall 2 should be a much better and more complete experience

I really enjoyed this game! The mobility and mech battles definitely have me excited for the sequel.

Rimeskeem3751d ago

Titanfall was like the MP version of The Order (not in the literal sense). Everything to make an amazing game but not enough content to keep going. Hope they make another one of each but with far more content.

PixelGateUk3751d ago

You bloody love The Order don't you :P?

76erz243751d ago

Except Titanfall sold more then double the Order did, and holds a 87 on Metacritic (the same as Fallout 4) compared to the Order's 63. The games success is not closely related.

Rimeskeem3751d ago

Maybe cause one had a gizzilion negative articles on the game while the other had a gizzilion positive articles on the game before release.

Tobsesan3751d ago

Titanfall sold over 10 Million. I dont think The order is over 2m

Utalkin2me3751d ago

Titanfall was also on 3 platforms vs The order on 1 platform. But it doesnt matter, all about the games.

TheOtherVitaOwner3750d ago

You're just gonna ignore that Titanfall user score, right?

Ugh the damage control...

There is a big difference between The Order and Titanfall and that is the latter game isn't terrible.

Constantly crying about the 'hate' for this game does very little to change the fact that many people think the order is a shit game.

super_bruno3750d ago

The Order is a terrible incomplete game with bad gameplay. Titanfall is a good incomplete game with good gameplay. I don't see how they can be compared.

Rimeskeem3750d ago (Edited 3750d ago )

I thought they were both incomplete games with good gameplay. I'll give Titanfall the better gameplay but The Order had a story and it was good.

Should have been a success? Didn't this game sell over 10 million copies?

Khaotic3751d ago

I think it was 10 million users but it was spun in a way that it sounded like sales. But hey even half that is very respectable

Majin-vegeta3751d ago

Nope...What Khaotic says it what they said.10 mil users not copies bougnt.

ScaReCrow903751d ago (Edited 3751d ago )

I'm confused then.
How is it 10 million users?
In other words how does a user play the game without buying it?

Majin-vegeta3751d ago

@crow EA access and gamesharing.

Silly Mammo3750d ago

Also, EA had a wide open Beta. So they could count the beta users as well.
