Dev: PS4 API Will Hold Its Own Against DX12, Sony Knows How To Implement Efficient Graphics API

Microsoft has done a great job of marketing its graphics API, DirectX 12. The API is available on the PC platform and several games such as Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Mirror's Edge, Ashes of the Singularity and many more will be utilizing the new API.

The PS4 might be slightly more powerful but it doesn't really show in real-world results

And Microsoft created the API most developers use DirectX. DirectX12 is most likely more efficient than what Sony has

We know there will be benefits small or big but it will improve Xbox One games

Hoffmann3705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

But but but..how can the most developers use DirectX12 when - in raw numbers of games - the most developers are developing PS4 games instead of xbox ones and their PC ports are usually bad ports that are porly optimized? ;)

MCTJim3705d ago

DX12 games have not been released as of yet.

Vasto3705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

Most developers are developing PS4 games?

When did games like Mirror's Edge and Deus Ex become PS4 games?

Do you even know what Direct X is?

mozzie3705d ago

but but but don't you think devs like EA and so on are not interrested in developing the same game only once for PC and Xbox one with minor changes and give PS4 the crappy port?

XanderZane3704d ago

Hhhmm... actually more developers are making PC games, not PS4 games. That's a fact. Because most future PC games will be Win10/DX12 games, it means most of these games will easily port to the XB1 with hardly any issues. There's actually more mobile, IOS, Android games being made then PS4 and XB1 games. Currently there are no DX12 games out on the market yet.

DrumBeat3705d ago

How does it not show in real world results?

It's been showing since the gen began with better performance in many games, and higher resolutions on MOST multi-plats.

It's got a more powerful GPU, and this has definitely shown as well.

343_Guilty_Spark3705d ago

Even with the resolution advantage the games still look virtually identical. You don't see any massive improvements in lighting, physics, texture quality, AI, etc....but I know people round here think resolution is the end all be all.

Sunny_D3705d ago

What do you expect Guilty? Devs to spend more time and money to develop on one platform over the other? Not to mention showing bias against the other platform. That would be bad business.

sammarshall1023705d ago

There's barely a difference even with the higher resolution is what I'm saying

@343_Guilty_Spark Exactly!

343_Guilty_Spark3705d ago

@Sunny_D

If that were true then PS4 best looking exclusives would look way better than the best looking Xbox One but so far I haven't seen anything that indicates that one the PS4 could do something the Xbox some couldn't (resolution aside).

donthate3705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

Simple case of reality hits diminishing returns. When you are talking small gains like even a 100% better performance across the board, the graphical output barely registers for most users.

Even PC has to have about a magnitude more performance to even get close to make an impression. It's like load times, 10s or 8s, does it matter?

The real game changer is XBL Cloud Compute and PS VR in the console space. They are both set to come out this year, and I'm very excited for both.

Cautiously optimistic about PS VR though since the support is likely to be dubious from Sony, but PC should do well in the long run with a lot of creative content and outlast a generation of a console.

XBL Cloud Compute is very optimistic based on what they have shown, but it will be interesting to see how MS will deal with outages and how tolerant consumers are of this. It will also have short term technical issues that need to be ironed out over time.

So yeah, the old age debate of how "powerful" your console is, is just a joke. It's like asking how fast is your Toyota Corolla?

Performance isn't why you would buy a Toyota Corolla!

It's laughable to even consider!

Azzanation3704d ago

Or maybe X1 deserves the credit for keeping up with a console with a more powerful GPU? I mean apart from the resolution the games are identical. Not bad for a console with inferior hardware.

"The PS4 might be slightly more powerful but it doesn't really show in real-world results"

Sam, you know that's not true. You're in denial.

ClayRules20123705d ago

Lol. I could see Nathan Drake saying that to his brother, Sam, during an intense action scene, in Uncharted 4.

"Sam, you know that's not true. You're in denial"

Xb1ps43705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

Every time I read comments on n4g from the Playstation only gamers I always find my self asking my self if I have a fake ps4...

I have both consoles and while I agree the ps4 games seem to run a bit better but that's about it it's not this huge improvement over like many make it seem.

So what am I missing? I know I have my setting right on my hd tv it's hooked up by hdmi... so wtf am i missing so I can see this huge improvement over xb1 games?

I have yet to play a game on the ps4 that has wow'd the hell out of me graphics wise.. I mean until dawn looks amazing at times but it's not very demanding on the mechanics side it's not like it has huge set action pieces it's border line 1842 or what ever name that crap game was..

Genuine-User3705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

@Xb1ps4

I have an Xbox One. And image clarity is really important, in my opinion.

They don't just "seem" to run and look better.

Until Dawn, Driveclub, Infamous SS and The Order 1886 gtaphics didn't impress you?

Out of curiosity, graphically, what has impressed you in the past 2 years?

Xb1ps43705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

Ha... so I guess I have a fake ps4 and you have a fake xb1 if you have a problem with image quality on the xb1..

Lmfao for some reason you reminded me of that metro pcs commercial the 20 30 commercial.

Until dawn looks good but it's border line 1886, not much going on.. you know.. press x square circle the x really fast again to climb that wall... didn't play drive club forza filled that gap for me.

A few games look great infamous looked great but the world is dead compared to say gta5... see I don't get hung up on graphics like you do so like I said nothing has wow'd the hell out of me because the few games that look great are some what boring..

Im more into the total package good graphics, game play and content.. games like Witcher 3 gta5 bloodborn I enjoyed Diablo and still do forza tomb raider halo5 sunset was great. I'm sure I'm missing more

Genuine-User3705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

@Xb1ps4

You didn't answer my question and resorted to an ad hominem.

Edit:

You initial post:

"I have yet to play a game on the ps4 that has wow'd the hell out of me graphics wise"

Your second post:

"Until dawn looks good but it's border line 1886, not much going on"

"didn't play drive club forza filled that gap for me."

"infamous looked great but the world is dead"

"see I don't get hung up on graphics"

You're moving the goalpost in your second post and derailing the entire context.

Xb1ps43705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

Cmon if you're going to respond with dictionary words trying to sound all superior at least read what I write...

"See I don't get hung up on graphics like you do nothing has wow'd the hell out of me"

Close you dictionary open tab and read it again..I'm sure you can find that sentance...

Edit

"Goalpost"... lol just go back to your dictionary words.. sorry I derailed your world.. I don't know what you are getting at?

When I first put in gears of war and played it that wow'd the hell out of me had me like next Gen is here! I haven't had that feeling yet when it comes to graphics. Some games look great but that's short of wow for me on top of it game play on some of those games are underwhelming.. are we back on track now?

3705d ago
Gamer4News3705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

> @Xb1ps4 So what am I missing?

A good set of eyes. 20/20 vision. And/or your eye glasses.

Anybody with 20/20 vision or anyone who wear glasses will be able to tell the difference between 720P and 1080P.

Between 30 FPS and 60 FPS.

It may be time to get your eyes check if you can't tell the difference. If all you see if a blurry screen.

Xb1ps43704d ago

@ lets Ago

Let's not pretend like ppl actually use the word hominem in a sentence in the real world so let's not even Ho there..

Yes that hdmi In is essential to me not only for the witcher but for all my games its a real benefit over a few damn pixels that you kids seem to think makes this massive difference in a game.

Here come all the little kids and their super pc... I mean ps4.. The almighty console bunch of pixel counters.. Bu bu but I counted a whopping 100 more pixels! What a joke..

It seems like the only people that disagree with this are people that don't own both. I have had both since 2013...and played them both on a 65" Samsung and now a 75" 4k Samsung....the differences in graphics are MASSIVELY over-rated. IMO it should be the very last thing someone considers to make a decision on which "version" to play. I feel like UI, Community, Network and Controller all make a much more important difference than resolution differences we've seen. For me personally, all those things are better on X1. Lately I only use my PS4 for exclusives...not a bad machine at all, but just not the better console IMO.

@Xb1 below...Witcher 3 had a higher Res, but X1 actually ran smoother.

Xb1ps43705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

Hit the nail dead on! My feelings exactly.. I've read Witcher 3 runs slightly better on ps4 but I got it for xb1.. why? Because that damn hdmi in port was pure genius and In my opinion is seriously underrated..

3705d ago
Gamer4News3705d ago

I know, right? It doesn't matter that the game freezes every 5 seconds. All that matter is that HDMI in port thing.

Stogz3705d ago

What a shock, the closet MS fanboy prefers the X1!

Xb1ps43704d ago (Edited 3704d ago )

Gamer4news

You kids just love to bs.. Freezes every 5 seconds! Seriously.. I have a special copy I get to play a whole 7 seconds before it freezes😎

Stogz..

What a shock the whole ps4 gang came out to assure everyone just how mighty the ps4 really is....

Lets ago

Not just for witcher but for all my games...

You just haven't paid attention then at all. It's understandable after those hundreds of 3rd party games in which the PS4 version took the crown. Not yet mentioning Marvels like Drive Club with weather, Uncharted 4, The Order, Until Dawn, Kilkzone Shadow fall graphics. It's understandable you missed this entire generation ignoring things like many Xbox fans tend to do.

Captain_TomAN943704d ago (Edited 3704d ago )

It's twice as powerful, and also no. The PS4 uses a streamlined version of OpenCL which is inherently more efficient than DirectX. Go look at Project Vulcan - that is what the PS4 uses.

sammarshall1023704d ago

LOL the PS4 doesn't use Vulcan it uses GNM and the higher level GNMX

The things you read on here

nitus103704d ago

Most software developers actually use the tools they are comfortable and familiar with.

DirectX is a suite of graphical software libraries that are proprietary to the Microsoft OS. There are other graphical libraries that are used with Android and IOS (Apple) as well as the PS3 and PS4.

When you start a game you may see names like Bink, Unreal or CryEngine just to name a few (there are many more). These are what is called "game engines" in that they allow the designer to develop a game without having to go back to first principle programming commonly called "programming to the metal".

Game Engines depending on your target platforms will have the appropriate libraries that allow a game to run on that platform be it PC, PS3, PS4, Wii, WiiU, XBox360, XB1 or even Android or IOS systems.

Greatness awaits the PS4 & Xbox One this year.

In my point of view, Bill Gates would have been a lot better in Sony than Microsoft.

Pixelart3705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

How do you figure?

Lennoxb633705d ago (Edited 3705d ago )

So a software guy, would do better in a hardware company? LMAO.

You ever thought about a career in stand-up?

@SpinalRemains138

Not that Bill Gates wouldn't be slightly beneficial to a hardware company. But Bill Gates knows a LOT more about software than he does hardware. He would be more in the way than anything.

As I'm pretty sure the hardware engineers at Sony know a LOT more about hardware than Bill Gates.

SpinalRemains1383705d ago

Calling Bill Gates a software guy, is like calling Robin Hood a jeweler.

Aenea3705d ago

@Spinal

I'm so not a fan of how MS and Bill Gates do/did business but saying Bill Gates doesn't know anything about software is rather wrong, he wrote MS-DOS by himself in a hotel room in a few days in assembly. Sure it wasn't exactly original, it borrowed a lot of ideas from CP/M and other OSes from that time, but he still wrote it.

nitus103704d ago

@Aenea

A quick search will prove you wrong. Bill Gates never did write MS-DOS it was actually written by Tim Paterson.

Rhythmattic3704d ago

"he wrote MS-DOS by himself in a hotel room in a few days in assembly."

No he Modded 86-DOS from Seattle Computer Products.

Bought it for a steal........

Nothing else to do other than speculate and wait.

sk8ofmnd3705d ago

Exactly, 2016 is the put up or shut up year for developers, consoles, and gamers. Both camps ms and sony have a lot on the line for this year to prove with many games that could be sleeper hits or duds.

If Nintendo re-released the Game Boy with a bigger, colour screen, it’d make a killing. Better still, a Game Boy legacy handheld with a 3D dual screen, able to play all games from Game Boy to 3DS, able to link it to a TV. It’ll never happen l know.

gigoran86d ago

Sega's swan song, their best and most memorable console, the dreamcast. it will last for generations

ZycoFox6d ago

Dreamcast was a very good console, with some minor setbacks, no 2nd stick and could've used a bit more disc space. The main thing that let it down was support, the short time it was on the market it did still bring in a bunch of really good titles, if only it had another 2-3 years and more longer story based games as well as the arcade games.

I would say because of the above the Mega Drive / Genesis is probably their best, simply because of the wide range of support and amount of quality games.

Profchaos6d ago

Yeah also massive mega drive fan it's my favourite to

Loktai6d ago

there was a point in time where the DC was meant to have a MATROX gpu possibly, as well as other contenders and if it had along with a possible DVD drive and price hike it would be a totally different beast.

RaiderNation6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

Yeah, I loved the Dreamcast, but massive oversight not including a right analog stick. A very strange design decision considering that dual analog was already standardized by Sony during the PS1 generation. Virtual On was literally unplayable on the controller because of it.

1nsomniac5d ago

^ I had Virtua On and loved it.. what made it unplayable?

shinXseijuro5d ago

I was 8 years old when Dreamcast came out I don’t know for other people but it was the coolest thing to me when I could go play it at my older siblings . I finally bought my own Dreamcast around 2005 , when I was in high school and was old enough to save money . Had a blast with jet set radio , sonic adventures 1&2 , shuffle , code Veronica , Power stone 1&2 , crazy taxi . House of the dead Arcade style shooter. . I even had the reindeer bot CD for burnt games . Oh and I remember lending a friend a copy of SF alpha 3 Dreamcast with the box …. Dude never gave it back to me 🤣

Shenmue blew me away, and took me to a place i had never been before (until years later)

Agent751d ago

Shenmue was unreal back in the day. It was painful waiting for the sequel and it perfectly carried on from the first game. Shenmue 3 on the PS4 looks like a Dreamcast game and carried on as if it was running on the Dreamcast. A Shenmue trilogy is overdue. Not sure if we’ll ever see Shenmue 4, but SEGA went with Yakuza, a Shenmue clone, which is probably why Shenmue was forgotten. If Shenmue had been ported to the PS2 after the Dreamcast dropped off, things may have been different.

Relientk776d ago

I love my Sega Genesis. I have childhood memories playing that console which will never fade.

Agent751d ago

It was the best console for sport games by a long shot. Having a UK Mega Drive in 1991, playing US and Japanese games using a Honeybee adaptor was awesome. I think Europe only got around 250 games out of around 800 that got released.
