Crystal Dynamics veterans Scot Amos and Ron Rosenberg have replaced Gallagher as co-studio heads, positions which the pair have been acting in for "a few months" already.

I wonder if this have something to do with the sales of Rise Of The Tomb Raider? I hope not.

YinYangGaming3800d ago

Timing is pretty interesting, could definitely be linked for all we know. Darrell has also got a lot of abuse ever since ROTR was revealed as an XBO timed exclusive, probably just wanted to start something new.

DarkOcelet3800d ago

ROTR got a lot of negativity since its timed exclusivity announcement, maybe they didn't expect the sales to be that low.

They can say they are happy as many times as they want but things doesn't look good for ROTR. A game of its caliber not breaking the 1 million sales until now is a bit worrying.

Hell, even Bloodborne, a new IP sold over 1 million in less 10 days.

badz1493800d ago

The nature and timing of his resignation is not suspicious at all! /s

bouzebbal3800d ago

Sales were way below what they predicted.
But for us it's hard to judge who is responsible.
Square games sold close to nothing on 360 (Star Ocean, The Last Remnant, Infinite Undiscovery...) so this timed exclusive was destined to flop.

UltraNova3800d ago

The timing is very suspicious. I mean who leaves after a successful game launch?

Considering RotTR sales on xbox, I would say him leaving is directly related.

Its a shame though since the scores are pretty damn good. Whats going on in the xbox side, don't they like good 3rd person action/adventure games or do they all play Halo and Fallout?

Charybdis3800d ago (Edited 3800d ago )

Hope he will stay in the gaming business despite all the negativity towards the exclusive nature of ROTR.

LordMaim3800d ago

@UltraNova: Hideo Kojima. :)

UltraNova3800d ago

@LordMaim

Oh that's an entirely different bag of beans my friend.

In Kojima's case we've seen hateful acts from Konami yet we've seen nothing of that sort in Darrell Gallagher's case.

Oh and for the record, MGSV received great scores AND sold well (and it was multiplatoform).

dirkdady3800d ago

Typically to have an executive leave so abruptly indicates that he is stepping down or "asked" to resign.

This move makes me think the tomb raider deal with msft may have been engineered Darrell and he is essientially falling on his sword.
Would be interesting to see where he lands - perhaps microsoft?

Blaze9293800d ago

@abzdiine "Sales were way below what they predicted. "

what did they predict?

XabiDaChosenOne3800d ago

@Blaze929
For a multi million dollar budget definitely not 300,000 first week sales that's for damn sure.

rainslacker3800d ago

Timing would be typical. Many execs wait until after a game is released before leaving. He probably has some other place he wants to go work, and just held out until the game shipped.

Eonjay3800d ago

I had long wondered if CD had gotten paid at all or if it was just Square.

If it was the former then Square Enix has conclusively sabotaged CD and in the same move caused extreme damage to the Tomb Raider franchise.

rainslacker3800d ago

They probably got paid during production, and then at certain milestones including final delivery. Updates and such would be paid as well. Any bonuses paid would be tied to game sales, and those different quotas for the pay outs would depend on the game itself. Typically they're tied into what the publisher expects to sell overall.

I don't think they've left CD out to dry just yet. There's just a change in management. SE could easily just shut down the studio, or sell them off, and cut their losses if they were not wanting CD around anymore, or had no intention of using them in the future.

YinYangGaming3800d ago

@DarkOcelet Yeah sales have been disappointing so far without a doubt, it's a shame too because the critical reception and reviews have been very good. Fact is it comes down to bad timing to release when it did and also possibly Square announcing other platforms before the game even came out on the Xbox platforms. Anyhow, I just hope the industry sees this as an example of how a timed exclusive deal can go wrong and learn from the mistakes MS and Square made

DarkOcelet3800d ago

Timed exclusive can go wrong when you are giving it to a fanbase that is clearly not invested in the franchise as the other platforms.

If ROTR would have been a timed exclusive to the PS4, i think it would have sold at least more than 1 million copy day 1 because thats where the majority of the fanbase are.

Crimzon3800d ago

Considering how quick Square-Enix was to announce the game coming to other platforms, I think the guy commenting below that the timed-exclusivity was a Crystal Dynamics initiative might not be far from the truth.

boodi3800d ago (Edited 3800d ago )

The game is a superb tomb raider experience ..trust me ..other then a good TR follow up and a super good and actractive adventure themed game ..
nothing been left to the case in programming .

advertising marketing and date of release is been so f@@@ing incredibily wrong one couldn't believe it

conanlifts3800d ago (Edited 3800d ago )

The timed exclusive may have been responsible for poor sales, but the release date was also crazy. I bought tomb raider day 1, but I still havnt opened the box. Why? Well fallout 4,halo, Star Wars etc. they should have released it at a time that would allow people to get caught up in the hype. I.e. Not with fallout 4 and halo. Every review I saw saying how great it is were quickly pushed off the headlines by other games.

IIFloodyII3800d ago

There was rumors CD pushed for the exclusivity deal, so could be Square forcing him out, but also probably just due to him being there for a really long time and wanting to move on, and he's doing it now due to the Christmas break coming up.

HOOHAARR3800d ago

Why would they push for a deal on the least selling console? Makes no business sense!

IIFloodyII3800d ago (Edited 3800d ago )

Because they prefer working on Xbox, always have, they never do the PC or PS versions of their games either, Nixxes usually do (which isn't a bad thing as they are really good).

Crimzon3800d ago

I had no idea that they were so closely aligned with Xbox, but now that you mention it, it does make sense. I remember the original Tomb Raider reboot being unveiled during a Microsoft E3 conference, and they said that the 360 version would get exclusive DLC. It does seem reasonable that this guy or others at CD were pushing for Xbox exclusivity for ROTTR and perhaps Square-Enix weren't too sad about seeing him go. It was definitely weird when you take into account that Square-Enix has always seemed to have a stronger relation with Sony anyways, so I can't see them being the ones who pushed for ROTTR to be a timed Xbox exclusive anyways.

HOOHAARR3800d ago (Edited 3800d ago )

I'm pretty sure they'd prefer bigger profits, despite whichever company they like the most. Companies go where the popularity, ie money is, game developers move around a lot too, it's the nature of the business
@below, who holds the most power? Developer or publisher? I'd go with publisher!

Crimzon3800d ago

The publisher (Square-Enix) would want the bigger profits, but the developer (Crystal Dynamics) would definitely benefit more from the exposure and developmental assistance from being exclusive, even if it's only timed.

Utalkin2me3800d ago

@IIFloodyII

"Because they prefer working on Xbox"

Im sorry but this is the silliest thing i have seen posted in a while.

IIFloodyII3800d ago (Edited 3800d ago )

@Hoohaarr

Clearly not, considering it's an Xbox timed exclusive.

Again CD clearly prefer working on the Xbox platform (look up who did the PS or PC versions of their games, if you don't believe me), Square aren't the smartest, MS wanted their Uncharted 4 competitor for the Holidays and Square would prefer dodging it. On paper it probably sounded like a good deal for them, in reality it wasn't, so if the rumors of CD pushing for the deal are true, it wouldn't be too crazy of Square to blame him for their mistake.

Do I think it'd be the only reason he left? No, he also most likely wanted to move on, but I wouldn't put it past Square to blame him.

@Utalkin2me

Good for you I guess, but if looking up who ported their games to other platforms is too hard for you, a lot of things must seem silly to you.

DarkOcelet3799d ago

I doubt CD pushed the exclusivity deal.

MasterCornholio3800d ago

Didn't they say they were happy with the sales?

HOOHAARR3800d ago

Would they really say otherwise? I think not

HOOHAARR3800d ago (Edited 3800d ago )

@llFloodll, nothing's been clear about the whole situation, nobody would even confirm it's exclusivity time when asked repeatedly! Let's not kid ourselves by thinking alliances or past relationships come into play here, it's only exclusive because Microsoft PAID for it to be!

Letthewookiewin3800d ago

@Master - Yes but you can equate it to when someone gives you a horrible gift yet you say you love it to save face.

FlipSwitch3800d ago

Most likely has something to do with the whole deal. Crystal may not have been happy with the deal from the beginning. Microsoft cause a lot of problems and woe in this industry.

They ruin studios

kenwonobi3800d ago

Sounds like it. I think he was given the option quite or be fired. Maybe he just wanted to leave before it's labeled a failure in sales. Maybe he is just ready to move on. It's sorta weird timing given the sales reports.

Tzuno3800d ago

Yes it does, i have a big feeling about this, exclusive or not people will not buy a console just for a game.

Christopher3800d ago (Edited 3800d ago )

The deal was made by SE who is the pubisher, not the developer. So, no, that makes zero sense.

***Timing is pretty interesting, could definitely be linked for all we know.***

Yes, timing is interesting. Instead of abandoning the studio during development and release of their latest title, he stayed on to make sure things were seen through and then moved on to do whatever he wants to do next.

People are making way bigger news out of this than it really is.

Magnes3800d ago (Edited 3800d ago )

@christopher Just curious what your take on Don Mattrick leaving microsoft after the xb1 launch is.

Christopher3800d ago

Considering the fast turn around on him getting a job at Zynga, I'd assume it was an assisted exit, at the least, and not a firing. If Mattrick wanted, he would still be working somewhere within MS, just likely not in a position so heavily reliant on PR, of which MS was aiming to turn around at that time.

choujij3800d ago

"If Mattrick wanted, he would still be working somewhere within MS".

Not without a paycheck...

rainslacker3800d ago

As quickly as Mattrick left after launch, I'd say that the Zynga deal was in the works before the console was even revealed. Big execs don't just apply for jobs from the local paper, they are courted, sometimes for many months, but Mattrick likely took the responsible route and decided to stick around until after the console launched to prevent disruption of that event...for better or worse in retrospect.

Christopher is right though. It isn't uncommon for executives to stay around until after a big project is shipped, or at least a major milestone is achieved. More often than not, they will also make sure their replacement is lined up and with the program before leaving to prevent disruption to a project, and in any case, he was probably under contract to stay until the game shipped.

It's pure conjecture to assume he was asked to leave, or upset with how the whole ROTTR sales affected the company.

Magnes3800d ago

Interesting points of view you guys have. The other day it was raining and I got wet not because it was raining mind you but because I forgot an umbrella.

DarkOcelet3799d ago

It is a big news because the man has been with Square for 10 years but it seems that he quit not because of ROTR sales.

iTechHeads3800d ago

Someone has to take the blame for that disaster.

Captain_TomAN943800d ago

He was probably the one that made that bone-headed deal with MS.

Yeah I have another bright idea, let's make Mass Effect a Playstation exclusive even though PS is its smallest market. BRILLIANT!

DarkOcelet3800d ago

You do realize that chances are Mass Effect Andromeda will sell the most on PS4 right?

Captain_TomAN943797d ago

@DarkOcelet

Because PS is so much more popular now. So if it does that is why, but classically ME has sold FAR better on XBOX.

On the other hand TR has ALWAYS sold far better on Playstation, and FAR worse on XBOX. So not only did they choose the weakest brand to make a deal with, but also the weakest console of that brand.

Moronic.

YodaCracker3800d ago

I highly doubt it. Maybe it was time for a change in his career. Of course he would see through the release of this final game before leaving the company. This reminds me of when Jack Tretton left Sony shortly after the PS4's release. People were confused about the timing. His departure certainly was not because of the PS4's sales performance, which was fantastic. He just wanted to see through the console's launch before moving on in his career. I'd call it going out on a high note.

DarkOcelet3800d ago

Well, like i said, i hope this has nothing to do with ROTR and apparently, it has nothing to do with ROTR which is a good news.

mark_parch3799d ago

Crystal Dynamics veterans Scot Amos and Ron Rosenberg have replaced Gallagher as co-studio heads, positions which the pair have been acting in for "a few months" already.

this would mean they were already planning the change before tomb raider was released so doubt it has anything to do with sales

I hope it isn't coz of the sales of TR. People with xbox's should go and give this game a try. It is absolutely great. The CD team is absolutely on the right track with this game. Honestly this was more fun to play than the uncharted series. It isn't better than last of us on the gameplay or story front but hands down better than uncharted.

Hopefully the team at CD get their share with the pc and ps4 release. This game is truly special

DarkOcelet3800d ago

Its a great game indeed and more Xbox owners should get this game. One of the best games in 2015. Its up there in terms of quality with games like Witcher 3/MGSV/Fallout 4/Bloodborne.

shabz6663800d ago

Yeaaahhh... Mmmmm MGSV.... so good. Most GAME of all games this year. Theres a great video up on gamespot the point about mgs5.

2015 was good year for games

Kreisen3800d ago

I havent played this new one (sold my Xbone) but the last Tomb Raider was definitly more fun to actually play then any of the Uncharted games.

shabz6663800d ago

Yeah? I don't feel the same way about the first TR. But if you liked the first one then this one would easily surpass it i'm sure.

rainslacker3800d ago (Edited 3800d ago )

I felt it was fun, but it had a lot of dull moments. UC was paced a lot faster, and while I'd say the first reboot and UC1 were about on par fun wise overall, UC2&3 blew them both out of the water in both game play and story(for UC2 at least), so the new ROTTR game would have to be a significant leap over the first to be more fun than UC.

shabz6663800d ago

@rainslacker

I think it is. There is a great progression tree of skills, upgrades and abilities that you gain through scavenging story collectables, hunting animals and skinning em, and of course the tombs. Each tomb gives a unique reward/ upgrade like shooting 3 arrows without needing to fully pull back the trigger. The progression loop they have is great. That immediately makes it more rewarding to hunt for items and stuff instead of pixel hunting for trophies in uncharted. Because of its fast pace I never bothered with trophies in uncharted. Especially treasure hunting. Rtr has open hub worlds and. Moments of relaxation. Remember the village level in uncharted 2. Kids playing football and stuff after the epic train sequence. Theres a lot of those okay catch your breath moments in rtr. On a purely gameplay front cd have done a great job. They've created an addictive game loop in rtr.

rainslacker3800d ago

Well, as I said, I haven't played the 2nd, so I can only base my opinions from the first. Sounds like they improved on some things, but I never considered the progression tree of the first to be that exhilerating. That kind of progression never really impressed me, although it gave the user more control. TLOU used something similar, and I wasn't all into it, just made some things easier, and of course made it very much worth exploring.

Otherwise, I have heard the exploration aspect has been greatly improved with the new game, and I look forward to seeing it, but an immense backlog along with my game room being a storehouse for a lot of my furniture for an ongoing home remodel has made it more difficult to get around to the newer stuff.

insomnium23800d ago (Edited 3800d ago )

I got the first TR as PS+ gave it to me but I couldn't get into it. I might try again but then again why should I? There are way more games out there than I have time for anyway so why should I force myself?

I tried again to finish off the first boss in Old hunters DLC but still couldn't and decided to level up some more playing the main campaign on newgame+. I almost finished off the three bosses in forbidden woods on my second try. Now I remember how to kill them so tonight once I put our youngest to sleep those three will be finished.

Why am I talking about Bloodborne all the time? I have no idea. I think that game is jus THAT GOOD I can't stop talking about it.

Edit: Holy offtopic Batman someone has gone crazy marking all these comments for offtopic or trolling and when you read them anyway they are just normal comments most of them. Why would anyone do that?

dveio13d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing13d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit13d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing13d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9212d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
