I personally think so form of Hybrid CELL chip will be in the PS4 simply because the CELL has alot of untapped power, which has taken developers some time to come to grips with. So releasing a more powerful version similar to the C.B.E . Will eliminate any learning curves experienced with the Original chip.

Its always been my belief that Sony has already put in the groundwork for 2 or 3 generations of console.

PS4 need not be a radical jump in hardware like from 1 to 2 or 2 to 3. PS4 can simply be 3 or 4 cell chips, the newest, baddest RSX, a couple GB of RAM and a 5x Blu Ray drive with a 200GB disc. Done, they could build that tommorrow if they liked. The good thing about it its by the time its out, devs will well and truely have their heads around Cell developement so it wont be such a tough teething period for them.

When Sony say future proof, you had no idea how right they were.

UGH! How am I gonna get this into my PS3 right now? This is what the chip shoulda been from the start, cause the bottlenecks are (were) whats f#cking the developers up.

I would hope this is getting dropped into newer PS3's asap, but then there would compatibility issues between the two chipsets when it comes to games being played on either system. Still, the bottlenecks I think are the biggest culprit to the PS3's tricky development. Wish they woulda done this from the start, but hey, lifes a b!tch right?

this is similar to what was done with the PS2 when the emotion engine and reality chips were merged into a single chip.

hardly its a ps3 engine rsx+cell on one if iread it corectly less power more proformence sony may have sold cell intrest but there not ignoreing it far from it there just alowing other companys to foot most the bil i belive thell buy back in in a year or so

Wow, there still is a lot that is to be seen in this generation of gaming... hopefully Sony will implement those in a slim PS3 model... developers are still just scratching the surface with the PS3 and I definantly can't wait to see what PS3 games will be like 3-4 years from now.

I just had a flashback, and this old 8051 in my mind, which probably was bigger then a Cell/RSX combo @ 45nm is today. Wow. I just imagine jumping back in time with one of those babys, possibly running @ 5GHz, and showing it to some people. I think that would have caused a couple of heart attacks. (could have been qualified as a weapon). :)

Personally I think sony can't wait to here what specs the other manufactures bring out, let's say msoft match the power of 3 cells, Sony could then say OK, we'll put 4 hybrids in. they will be one step ahead in cost, knowledge of the CPU, the reliability of it.

In the ps4 which should be available in stores in the year 2014-2016 the will use a cell that doesn't use wires to conduct, but light. IBM have already begun testing this and cell was designed from the outset to use light when the cost became viable.

Just a wild suggestion but expect the next proper psp to use this hybrid in about 3 years time with mini blue ray' UMD to drive it.

I can see Sony throwing this cheap on future PS3 to lower heat and production cost. But right now the big dollar item in the PS3 is really the Bluray drive. Until they knock the typical Bluray player down to $60-80, how much money are they really saving?

As for this being the PS4 chip, no, hell no. The RSX is a freaking fossil of the computing world by now. You can buy PC version (the faster one) of this chip, the 7900 GTX for about $70 brand new. So basically having this GPU on the same die with any PS4 processor is pointless.

More than likely the nextgen PS 4 GPU will be based on Nvidia's 200 or ATI's 4800 series. In fact, if the PS4 GPU can not match ATI's 4870 X2 then it will be obsolete the day the PS4 hit the streets.

I think you all are a little confused about this article it has nothing to do with a PS3 with upgraded hardware or a PS4. The ZEGO project is a computer that shows games developers how to get the most out of the PS3s cell processor. It shows them how to program better with the Cell and how to eliminate bottlenecks.

I really don't know if Sony will use the Cell for the next Playstation, hell MS said they were developing their own CPU for the next xbox, its just a way of saving money all companies do this so don't worry so much. Also, Nintendo, do you reckon they make the next console as powerful as the 360 or PS3?

They could install multiple chips and save not only space in the workstation, but also money on having to worry about purchasing expensive graphics cards, due to the RSX procesor being on the chip itself. If you have a couple of these in your PC, it would probably be pretty powerful.

they can stack 82 cells and 82 nvidia chips into 1 die but its going to mean nothing with the amount of ram thats in the ps3.You need ram for more textures and the 360 and ps3 are maxing out.

if they decide to modify future ps3s with more ram and offer a trade in /upgrade on all existing ones thats fine

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
