VR is Dead-on-Arrival Without a Killer App

The tech demos of the PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift may be impressive, but they need some serious AAA game support to sell the headsets. Otherwise we're looking at another Kinect debacle...or God forbid...the return of the Virtual Boy!

Lets see what the price of the peripheral will cost first then talk about a killer app.

while the site is one of the most known Anti-Sony sites ..i agree ..VR needs to mature a lot more as technology to convince the majority to buy it... Simplistic games with mediocre longevity and gamepaly cannot convince smone to give 300$ over under to playthem

Already a lot of killer apps on PC. Literally hundreds of games already support VR on the platform. Amazing experiences like Ark and Elite really show what VR is all about.

I agree. Personally I find VR to be a completely subjective experience, and thus unable to truly have just one killer app. I've already played probably about 100 VR games in the Oculus Rift, and a handful easily stand out, but my handful is probably going to be different than the next person. It will be interesting to see which games end up standing out on the PSVR, but so far none of them look appealing to me. (the ones they have actually shown gameplay of that is. I know they have over 200 in development). Unless No Man's Sky ends up with PSVR support... But then again, i'd probably still buy it on the PC.

Sony might not do well as they hoped. Very few will buy VR headsets to play indie games and it really comes down to its exclusive flagship VR title leading the charge.

I just want to try rigs, but I'll be playing driveclub, ace combat, and others in vr, just to use it as a more immersive camera angle. That's all I need.

Wallstreet373829d ago

Rift already seems to be that killer app for PSVR so idk wtf they are talking about.

Rigs looks like a ton of fun at the very least. click bait crap.

Are a bunch of games, some of which are nearly 10 years old not one being from 2026. Barely one from 2025.

I do like the irony of the closing paragraph though, "Why VR Adventure Games are Thriving". Really buddy?

mooreneco2157d ago

That’s because it’s his favourite VR adventure games thus far, a great game always a great game regardless of age - Half life 2/ Ocarina of time - are old but still among the greatest games of all time. The irony of it is several are from last year, depending on platform, have you even played VR?
