It has great games thats why.

Massive success yes, but paying for online still hasn't improved PSN to a point where we could say that it's worth a monthly fee. Not to mention all the crappy indie games we get - I think I've enjoyed like 5 PS Plus games since PS4 launch, all the rest were trash.

"Think"? Sony is not "thinking" that the PS4 is a massive success, they bloody well "know it" is! Then consider that there is still more of the "Greatness Awaits" to come!

Its a success cause the PlayStation is always a success. Jesus there lowest selling console was the ps3 and that still sold 85 million or so

It's a massive success thanks to their competition beating themselves.

Nintendo with a weak system, lack of third party support, still far behind with the extra (party chat for example). Nintendo's Wii U is still seem as a Nintendo only system. Until you have 95% of ALL the big third party games, you can't expect to win over the core gamers in general.

Microsoft with DRM, Always Online, Forced Kinect, Price point being higher WHILE also weaker specs. Has anyone had a system reveal/E3 week as bad as Microsoft did in 2013?

Let's face it ... this generation was handed to Sony on a silver platter by Nintendo and Microsoft.

People were ready for the next gen....more than ready I would say so next gen consoles out of the gate were assured massive success imo. Then you factor that out of the 3 "next gen consoles" (yes I include the WiiU) the PS4 seemed to be the only one offering a significant boost in power over last gen (WiiU really just offered something slightly better than the Xbox360 & PS3) and the PS4 also was the one system boasting an experience that really wasn't changing from the last gen (see MS horrible always on, always connected if you don't like it we have an old console for you messaging). PS4 on the surface was the easy defacto choice, so early momentum really helped it steam roll into where it is today in sales. I don't think the PS4 actually has done anything ground breaking or different to get it to where it is today. They did revise the dual shock controller which did help, and games wise its library is good but it does seem to lack a bit in Sony Developed AAA games compared to how the PS3 was pumping them out.

End of the day the PS4 for many felt like it was kind of the only real choice they had for next gen...and it also felt like a good choice based on the competition. Sony won by defacto in a way and there is nothing wrong with that. their messaging was smart and safe and they maneuvered smartly early on grabbing up 3rd party deals to replace the slower paced 1st party releases.

It's a solid all round console.

It has the best games. A console won't keep outselling the other that is so similar to it by such a wide margin unless???? Yes its true Xbox fans. People like the games more. Ps4 has better games. There is hardly a difference between the two. It's not motion controls different this time selling the console. It's just better system and games. It what it is. Sales are saying it.

It's not just Sony that thinks the PS4 is a massive success.

1 Easily accessible, higher, power tending to result in slightly better versions of multifomat games than on Xbox One. This is probably the most defining reason.

2 Reduced popularity of competition this gen. WiiU seen as too expensive for the raw power, tablets no longer made the controller unique, casual Wii owners now playing mobile phone games or seeking more mature rated gaming elsewhere. Xbox One reveal and backtrack on several policies - wise move but some damage done. Particularly when taken in conjunction with 'only' using DDR3, it made Xbox One seem not as focussed on gaming visual quality as PS4. It's a little unfair as graphic design of exclusives and consistent framerate should have strong weight, particularly for multiplayer, but 1080p in cinematic games has worked for Sony in popularity. But some 360 owners will have already been put off from getting an Xbox One by the early mandatory Kinect (and up to 50% who might not be online or always want to be) by the 'always on' message. Even if they could see that the Xbox One wasn't likely to get RROD.

3 Loyalty of PS3 owners (although many may be waiting for Uncharted 4 before they upgrade) Free online on PS3 sweetened having to pay for it on PS4. A tendency to associate this as the 'go to' for smaller indie titles inbetween the big releases is something Microsoft is trying to make bigger steps than they did with 360.

A few reasons but, it a lot of it boils down to accessible power plus Sony Playstation name equals comfortable situation for many. Sony saw that the era of the console with least power selling most was coming to an end so they needed to extract as much power as they easily could for ALL games.

Now that Jim Ryan is gone just need to remove Herman Hulst from his position! And maybe give Shuhei the position he deserved.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

So now there's certifiable proof that Ryan was in fact "fired", as opposed to when it was first announced that he "retired", in order to save face.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
