Why Sony Thinks PS4 Is a Massive Success

"Back in August, PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida said Sony was mystified by the smashing success of the PlayStation 4. At the time, he said the system's overwhelming popularity "defied the conventional thinking," which the executive said could in fact even be a problem. To understand where a platform is going, you need to know how it got there, he argued."By Eddie Makuch

Well... 30 million in two years!
Yep, I think everybody would consider the PS4 a success.

Sales wise it's a monster facts speak for themselves

Captain_TomAN943811d ago

Sales, Profit, Software, performance - I never seen a more clear cut victory for a company.

t-hall7853811d ago (Edited 3811d ago )

Idk man what are the attach rates? I mean yeah they probably make 25 to 50 buck per console sold but the key is how much software can you sell. Most games sell better on playstation but not nearly by as much for a console that is outselling it's competition pretty much 2 to 1. I think Microsoft is in a good space. I just bought a ps4 on black friday it's a good system. but i can't see myself buying nearly as many games on it as my x1. we all have our own preferences so i know this goes both ways. But when i look at game sales, microsoft seems to be doing just as good as the comp when it comes to attach rates.

Letthewookiewin3812d ago

Ya they need to change the headline from "Thinks" to "Knows".

Officialxandr3812d ago

It's a success because I love mine! xD

LordMaim3811d ago

3 people think you're lying. SMH.

UltraNova3812d ago

"We see numbers of people coming back to console," he said [Yoshida]. "Many people [who own a PS4] didn't used to have any last-gen console, even Nintendo Wii. Those people are coming back."

That ^^^ says a lot about ps4's appeal.

3811d ago
kenwonobi3811d ago

Well warcloud. If the software sales don't match for the leading software seller in the entire market that's not such a bad thing for Sony in particular but all platforms as a whole. Since PS4 outsel ls all other consoles in software combined.

Realms3811d ago (Edited 3811d ago )

@WarCloud

Software sales are down across the board yet the ps4 still manages to sell more software sales than the WiiU and X1 combined. LOL

UltraNova3811d ago

Warcloud,

As the two guys above already showed, you done f***** it up!

PS4 is a successful beast just like Godzilla

milohighclub3811d ago

The console is a success just a shame that Sony have forgotten what it's like to be in second place.

Sunny_D3811d ago

But they remember what's it like to be in 1st. At least 3 times.

milohighclub3811d ago (Edited 3811d ago )

maybe but fans are last this time around... remember last gen? all the sick games, free online and psplus that was actually worth the money. ms need to take the lead so we get a sick service again. i mean i recently had to pay £50 to play a certain beta. which i can't even play because my internet isn't up to par(even though every other game plays fine)not to mention trying to charge £11/12 to play gta:sa upscaled...

#FORTHEPLAYERS... what happened to this?
js they're taking the piss out of us this gen.

rainslacker3811d ago

As a Sony fan, I would appreciate if you didn't speak for me and assume that I am disappointed in the services and products that Sony has delivered to me this gen. As an individual I am capable of determining that for myself, and while Sony hasn't been perfect this gen(or any other really), I can say that I have gotten my moneys worth out of the system, the games, and PS+.

milohighclub3808d ago

Sorry you must have misread my comment. Did I speak for you? I was simply making an observation of something I have noticed since Sony took first place. Not once did I say that every body or any body feels like this. I was simply pointing out how I feel.

Tbh I don't know how people can feel another way. I've owned every Sony console and will continue support them just wish they wouldnt stop offering the great support and services they did last gen, just because they're in first place.

The success Shuhei is talking about is how PS4 drew in non-console gamers from casual mobile gaming to home video gaming.
Gamers who own a PS4 but not the PS3, 360 nor the Wii.

This is just as I have said before because that is the only logical source of gamers.
And these kids have actual gaming experience on mobile compared to the crowd the Wii attracted before.

These casual gamers wants a deeper gaming experience on PS4.
The PS4's popularity is perfectly on the right place at the right time.

For me that is a greater responsibility than winning the console wars - expanding the video game market for keeps.

PS4 has another responsibility to do aside from expanding the console gaming sector & that is to revive console gaming in JAPAN.
This is why PS4 has signed a deal with Square Enix, Capcom, Bandai Namco, etc. to make tons of exclusive games for PS4 to accomplish this goal.

For now PS4 is the only capable platform to do it because the gaming public trust it's capabilities.

Gambatte PS4! You can do it!

Syanara173811d ago

@t-hall

I am in a similar yet opposite boat as you.

I had a PS4 and last year during black Friday bought an Xbox One. I love the console (especially with the NXOE) but I have trouble seeing myeslf buying a lot of games for it. I realized that I am trying to buy single player games like fallout or Tomb raider on Xbox One because all my friends are on PS4.

In any case I agree PS4 might be a hardware success but one console selling more than the other does not mean that the other is automatically doing poorly.

Tsar4ever013811d ago (Edited 3811d ago )

Let's ALL THANK MARK CERNY, for moving the Sony platform away from exotic proprietary hardware, to adopting the standardized universal gaming programming language of X86 architecture.

skratchy3811d ago

It's ahead of the PS2 so far, and we all know that went on to sell over 200 million. Things can change, but there are some huge titles coming out in 2016. It'll take a lot of fuck ups.

PS4 is Sony's fastest selling system, and the second fastest selling console of all time.

What else would you call it

Sharingan_no_Kakashi3812d ago

Sales is only one contributing factor for success. Features and games are the other. It does have a lot of cool features and more to come I'm sure so I'm not worried about that.

Games are what I'm worried about, and that's not necessarily Sony's problem alone. But unless AAA game development steps its game up I'm not calling either console a true success. So many screw ups, Ubisoft especially. And Sony has a had more than a few disappointing big name releases too. Next year will determine if this gen is the gen we've all been waiting for.

S2Killinit3812d ago (Edited 3812d ago )

Im quite happy with the games already. They have more than others. And they have a good focus on variety. No matter what you are into there is something for you.

As to dissapointments, i think they were only dissapointments on the web. And we all know how fickle the mob on the web is. They eat up what they are told. Whoever happens to be paying more of the journalist's bills at the time decides which games were "dissapointments"

frostypants3811d ago

This has been an amazing year for games...

kenwonobi3811d ago

I find most times that only Xbox owners are displeased with Sony games. While actually PS4 owners seem to have too many to play. Maybe it's just they don't know what they are talking about?

rainslacker3811d ago

There have been some duds, but overall, I have played a lot of great games these past two years.

It's still not up to par with the PS2 gen yet, but the excitement seems like it's surpassed that gen, and we're only two years in to the gen.

Best is yet to come, and I can assure you, we still don't even know half the games which will be releasing by this time next year.

3811d ago
Sharingan_no_Kakashi3811d ago

It's been a great year for indies anyway.

And before I continue I'd like to say that I'm a proud playstation gamer. I've owned every single playstation console. I've never owned an Xbox and don't intend to. But being a playstation fan doesn't disqualify me from being critical of Sony. Otherwise, they'd have no reason to improve.

The Crew, Driveclub, The Order, Evolve, Ultra Street Fighter IV, Star Wars Battlefront, Tony Hawks Pro Skater 5. These are just a few games that promised big and under delivered, or were completely broken at launch, and this is just 2015. Lets not talk about last year. Of course we've had the Witcher, Batman and the like but AAA games need to step up.

Letthewookiewin3812d ago (Edited 3812d ago )

Ya I was really expecting them to have some bigger games up for December. I was a little disappointed. But it is what it is.

Malice-Flare3812d ago

games like those take time. are you saying the games they showed aren't potentially good games? how elitist...

xxShadow-Shockxx3811d ago

I feel like 2016, we will see bigger games on the instant game collection

kenwonobi3811d ago

I think you'll stop using this argument this year. It's literally last year gonna be used for next few months. Then the Xbox honeymoon of using this argument is done.

mochachino3810d ago (Edited 3810d ago )

I have a ps4 not xone.

Had ps3 too, every month plus released AAAs. Its about time they started with PS4 but I guess the majority of people don't want better games.

This article is pointless. Sony thinks its a massive success BECAUSE IT IS.
There, I just saved you a ton of pointless reading.

Griever3812d ago

I read the article and I think it gave a reason. The PS4 is easy to develop for so many indie developers and major developers are supporting it. As a result, there are wide range of games belonging to various genres available on the system that appeal to one or another. This is causing people to buy the system including those who did not own a console last gen because they will find something that appeals to them.

I think Indies really help to diversify the gaming library because mainstream developers mostly limit themselves to tried and tested franchises and genres. The diversity pulls in most number of people.

Athlon10118d ago (Edited 18d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit18d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg17d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10117d ago (Edited 17d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14918d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I wonder if he tried to stop Shawn Layden from starting it?

Profchaos20d ago

Technically horizon came out in 2020 under Jim Ryan who took over in 2019

It's hard to tell who initiated the project but the Decima engine makes porting to PC fairly easy so who honestly knows if this was Jim's initiative or not I get the feeling it was

Redemption-6420d ago (Edited 20d ago )

It's actually not hard at all. Shawn Layden said he started it. Shawn Layden has confirmed that he was behind the strategy to bring PlayStation exclusive games to PC. Regardless of whether you hate Jim or not this wasn't his idea. It happened during his watch, but it was started before he took over. Below are links with him confirming it started with him

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

S2Killinit25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199225d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga25d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box25d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion24d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7225d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7525d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit25d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14925d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7725d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
