Sony First-Party Studios – Where Art Thou?

PSLS weighs in on Sony's PlayStation Experience keynote, and asks the question whether Sony Bend and/or Santa Monica had intended to showcase their PS4 game during the event.

If they are not shown at PSX then they will be at E3.

Aloy-Boyfriend3822d ago

Sony Bend game and GOW4 seem 2017 releases to me, which mean they may show up at E3 indeed. As much as I hated this conference, I have to cut them some slack because they've been on a roll showing stuff in different events throughout the year, and PS4 has a strong lineup next year.

DarkOcelet3822d ago (Edited 3822d ago )

How can you hate it when they shown so much for the VR to prove that its more than just a gimmick?

And they have shown Ni No Kuni 2 and FFVII Remake gameplay, in my opinion those two were Megatons.

And you are being so critical. Sony have shown so much in three events before PSX so cut them some slack. They are doing an excellent job here.

AngelicIceDiamond3822d ago

Right, Cut them some slack they've announced allot, I mean allot this year. Sony is putting tons of effort and everything they can to announce these games. E3 2016 is where I believe we'll see Gran Turismo, Sony Bend's Project, David Cages new game Detroit, SS GoW 4 plus more.

KwietStorm_BLM3822d ago

@Dark

Maybe he doesn't care about VR? Why would judgement of an entire show rest on what they did with VR, which as far as the stage "demo," was a step above awkward. Ni No Kuni didn't interest me, not my kinda game at all. The FFVII gameplay was great. But other than that, I didn't see what I wanted to. Sony Santa Monica wasn't present. Still don't know what Bend is doing. No idea where Rime is. And you say cut them some slack when those were his exact words lol.

user99502793822d ago

except they werent at gamescom. And their E3 was weak. And their PGS was weak. and TGS was even weaker. And they have shown the same demo of Horizons like 40 times.

I dont care to give Sony slack. As far as I'm concerned they havent earned it.

Why o why3822d ago (Edited 3822d ago )

Urghh. . Tired of this 'didn't interest me ' mantra when some people fail to realise it's not just them Sony cater for. Some people are very interested in the games others are not. Not everyone likes steak. I did want more announcements of the games I wanted but over the past year I've seen quite a few games that have interested me personally. . I don't care for mlb the show but others do. I was happy to see everybody's golf coming to the west. . I know I'm not in the majority. It's why I chose Sony, variety

Martin. . Sony could do better but to say everyting they've shown was sub par is a little over the top.

If Sony show too much that is too far from release or not ready, they'll get critiqued

3822d ago
Death3822d ago

@Why,

That has always been Sony's strength. They have a very diverse library of games and IP's. By releasing many games in many genres there is always something for everyone. The past couple of years we haven't seen these games which is why some people are starting to complain.

someOnecalled3822d ago

Diverse is good when sony does it but bad when others do it huh. How many times we heard PS fanboys say a game doesn't interest them just because its on another. So he is not trolling by stating this.

For now on PS fanboys can never state a game isn't for them, or they don't care about a game since this seem to rubbed y'all a wrong way.

Next time someone state how diverse pc is and about a popular game on it I don't wanna hear the BS. Y'all can say whatever but when someone else say it its wrong

Christopher3821d ago (Edited 3821d ago )

***And their E3 was weak. And their PGS was weak. and TGS was even weaker.***

I think we're reaching the point where it's more that people just don't like the exclusives on PS4 and like it on another console. The whole "weak" element is purely opinion based. It might be the popular one, and if true, Sony would be strong to try and adjust for that. But, so far this year both Sony and MS have had strong strong showings compared to the three years prior.

As far as first-party studios, I think Sony is investing most of their money in 2nd and 3rd party exclusives and some of their first-party studios are being used to prop up VR (not something I really like). I'm really happy with Horizon: Zero Dawn, there's the (thank heaven) final Uncharted game coming (and likely announcement at E3 on their next game). We'll see what SuckerPunch is doing next year. I'm surprised so many care about Sony Bend considering their games have been portable games, but I guess they're working on something. Then there's Dreams and GT whatcha-ma-call-it.

I think most people would lay off if Sony just announced a new FPS and a new action game. I think that's most people's issues. Not that there aren't games, but that they want first-party support on those specific genres.

Hayabusa 1173821d ago

Hated the conference? Ok. I guess. I really enjoyed this conference myself, I think the Sony conferences are getting better and better. Of course I don't expect them to announce a FF7 remake every fckng conference...

Ipunchbabiesforfun3821d ago

I find it odd how many of you think your love of Japanese games are a universal thing...ni no kuni and final fantasy remake? Really? That's what I have to look forward to? I'd rather punch myself in the face repeatedly than be subject to those games.

I like my PS4, but I haven't bought a game since mortal kombat. I thought about the uncharted collection and have pondered fallout and Star Wars but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Either way, those aren't PS4 exclusives. I need some real games: uncharted, God of war, something!!!

Mr Logic3821d ago

I find that hard to stomach. Bend's last game was 2011 and you're saying their next game is 2017? So you're saying Sony has let them work on a game for 6 years?!?

In that time Naughty Dog has put out Uncharted 3, TLoU, Uncharted 4 and will be close to releasing a 4th game.

remixx1163821d ago (Edited 3821d ago )

@martin

Say what homie?

Define weak, hold 4 conferences in a year and announcing new AAAs at every confrence is weak?

Sonys E3 was weak? Announcing the last guardian, horizon zero dawn, shenmue 3, nier 2, ff7 remastered and dreams all in one confrence with new uncharted 4 gameplay is weak??? That was probably one of the strongest E3s ever I'm starting to think your brain is weak.

And they'veonly shown two ddifferent demos of horizon so stop with the bs.

Its crazy all the anti Sony articles that'sbeen popping up lately and the xXbox fanboys are just coming out of the wood work.

I mean this just shows how petty you guys are, Sony has conferenceshowing off new games (mostly indie) and you smoes some how spin it into a negative.

And if a game doesn'tinterest you @kwietstorm then that's your problem big homie. Don't try to spin your lack of interest in a game as a negative.

As far as Iwas concerned it was a day of new game announcements from Sony(mlb the show 2016, NI ho, nI no kuni) a day in which Microsoft and Nintendo gave me nothing .

Was it on the weaker side, yes but seeing as it was a day of new games from Sonyand no one else it was still pretty good to me, especially coming off the fact that tthey'veannounced the most AAA games this year and have the most console exclusive games releasing next year.

Hellthey have street fighter and gravity rush remaster in Feb, uncharted in march, ratchet and clank in April gran turismo sport and persona 5 in the summer and that just the first half, we still waiting for horizon, dreams, the last guardian and so on to drop in fall.

Whoever thinks Sonyis being like 360 MS because of the 3rd party deals or being lazy and complacent are blind.

Moe-Gunz3821d ago

Didn't have a conference at Gamescom but "they weren't at Gamescom" is factually wrong.

I agree that. Give Sony First Party Studios more time to finish the game.

3821d ago
WelkinCole3822d ago

Or when sony thinks it is ready like Horizion Detroit and Dreams this year among others.

DarkOcelet3822d ago

Exactly, they give the developers their time to present the game as perfect as possible.

And that is great.

ScaReCrow903822d ago

With that line of thinking no one should risk attending these conferences. There's no guarantee for first party surprises. If they had nothing to show they shouldve canceled the conference.

BlackTar1873821d ago (Edited 3821d ago )

removed

ninsigma3822d ago

Yeah they have to be. They can't go another conference without showing up! Then again, everyone complains when Sony show stuff too early yet everyone is complaining that the studios haven't shown anything yet. Damn if you do damn if ya don't!

equal_youth3822d ago

I hope they saw the success of Fallout 4 announcement and go the same route with their exclusives. Announce at e3 release in Fall.

I can see that become reality because nearly every game we saw at PSX will come out in the first half of 2016. With the exception of NiOh, NiNuKuni2 and maybe Yakuza.

I'm still excited because all i need to know is that they are working on something big.

DarXyde3822d ago (Edited 3822d ago )

People don't seem to understand this makes, what, FOUR conferences this year? That they still had plenty to introduce speaks volumes about their proactive accomplishments.

Anyone getting mad at Sony for showing so much with 4 conferences in one year and not liking their offering, to me, is like being upset with your wife because she gave birth to your kid and you're not happy that her body isn't the same as it was. Strange example, but hopefully that makes sense.

It's not even like they're trying to screw us. They keep coming out swinging with new announcements all the time.

E3 is absolutely where the studios will be. I guarantee that.

CuddlyREDRUM3821d ago

I imagine you said the same last year.

What is happening at Sony Bend I can't imagine, not even sure if it is a full-fledged studio. They had a cancelled game a year or so ago.

DarXyde3821d ago

I don't think it needed to be said last year. We didn't even know what to expect since it was the first PSX anyway.

Whether I did or didn't, did we not see Final Fantasy VII and Shenmue III this year?

CuddlyREDRUM3821d ago

The article is about first party and the games you mention are third party timed exclusives.

If VR isn't a bad gimmick they haven't been doing it any favors. Google "playstation vr disaster".

Cheers.

For me the TGS was their best event. Was blown away by some of the games they showed at that even. E3 was also very good. 2016 is going to be huge for the PS4.

Gravity Rush 2 was an amazing surprise for TGS.

AizenSosuke3822d ago (Edited 3822d ago )

Or got more deals so much so that they are making a another conference for next spring maybe:)

UserNameIsNotTaken3822d ago

2016 has a lot of games. E3 is not far away too so they could show up there.

Double_O_Revan3822d ago

Can't believe it's already been 6 months since E3, which only leaves another 6 till E3 2016.

NotanotherReboot3822d ago

They probably would have shown 1 or 2 if Uncharted and Ratchet werent delayed until next year. Once ratchet and Uncharted are both out before next E3, they will most likely show of new ones.

They probably don't want to announce too many at once, as the risk of certain games getting overlooked by more popular ones could arise.

MasterCornholio3822d ago

"They probably don't want to announce too many at once, as the risk of certain games getting overlooked by more popular ones could arise."

That would be a pretty big mistake. Im glad that they wont make it as a mistake like that can kill a franchise.

Team_Litt3822d ago

Making VR games. Heavens that Santa Monica zombie game was cringe worthy! It's Kinect all over again!

TwoForce3822d ago

Sony Santa Monica is very big studio. They handle a lot of games. Indies, AAA and Vr. Give them time.

gangsta_red3822d ago

That game was a serious "lol" moment. If Sony's own studios can't make anything exciting for that device then you know there's a problem.

equal_youth3822d ago

Wasn't the santa monica game the Insane Zombie Cap game? I have to admit i liked what i saw. Reminded me of a more insane crazy taxi.

ScaReCrow903822d ago

Yes I saw that too. Very worrisome. They're pushing VR too much.

DigitalRaptor3821d ago (Edited 3821d ago )

This is all friggin' hilarious....

Where are Sony's first party studios? Oh I don't know..... making games that you ALL KNOW, but pretend are not, coming out next year and the year after..... They are all assigned in making traditional games and VR games..... SMFH. Except, in addition to these first-party games, they still have an awesome year of a third party exclusives as well, from known and brand new franchises. So not only is it not a problem, but it's quite the opposite. Why am I not surprised we have this troll in here, followed by another troll laughing, high-fiving and disingenuously supporting said troll?
---------

@ Gangsta_red

RIGS is Sony's best first-party VR game. They've done an incredible job capturing the immersion/presence factor and fun gameplay, and the visuals are solid. The game is seriously awesome, and has been receiving some tremendous feedback from others for a while now. Did you not try it out at PSX with Rookie, or are you here again judging PSVR without having tried it? Oh boy... oh yep... you can be damn sure of that. And that was a "lol" moment for me too. Modern Zombie Taxi Co. looks fun as absolute heck with a great sense of humour to the experience. I wish people were this negative about fun games when Crazy Taxi came out and was adored because of its humour, fun arcade gameplay and colourful aesthetics.

I read a blog once recently....what I gathered from that was "Has DK lost it??".... "Why is Santa Monica making a VR game and not God of War goddamnit??" People really are this stupid aren't they? Santa Monica is making a God of War game helmed by Corey Barlog, that isn't ready to be shown yet and is more likely to release in 2017, but they can't also support VR on the side? The knee-jerk hate for Sony is strong and the trolls have been capitalising on it big time.

Sonyyyyyy. Your first party studios...... Tell us..... Your games have been announced....... many have been released..... and several are confirmed for next year..... but where art though? WHERE ART THOU.???????? ;)
---------

@ ScaReCrow90
"They're pushing VR too much"

OK. Now I've heard it all.

Sony Registers New Trademark for “PSX” (PlayStation Experience)

Could a new PlayStation Experience event be on the way soon? Sony has regsistered a new trademark for "PSX."

Antnee5341802d ago

I would like it if they did 4 quarterly big shows a year well 3 of the shows being state of plays while the last one being the psx conference. Still keep small state of plays to be an add for upcoming first party games like they have done.

Rimeskeem1801d ago

I like them doing State of Plays on specific first party games and getting a deeper look at them. It would be nice to have a big conference at the end where people can play the games etc and Sony shows specific things like release dates and has tons of indie games available on the floor for exposure.

RaiderNation1801d ago

I agree. I think the State of Play format works better when it focuses on one title and gives us a nice deep dive on that title. This worked so well for TLOU2, GOT, R&C:ARA, and HFW.

Have PSX twice a year I say. One in January that focuses on titles we'll be playing in the coming year and one in July that focuses on the long term "road map" games we'll be playing the following year and beyond.

1801d ago
MightyHealthy1801d ago

You have to admit tho, the majority of state of plays have not been good

RaidenBlack1801d ago

I like this idea.
I really wish they do a July event similar to one like Future of Gaming event of June last year.

itBourne1801d ago

Dang I was thinking a whole different thing from yall, was thinking more of a PAX like event or something. Went to the Playstation Experience in Vegas and it was such a blast. David Jaffe signed my PS Vita, got to interact directly with developers and provide feedback on their games (miss Killstrain), and got to chit chat with Scott Rohde like just hanging out after an event, and tons of small cool panels and other Playstation fans. Thats what I was thinking when i seen Playstation Experience.

excaliburps1802d ago

I can see this maybe being something end of year? Maybe for the PSVR2? Dunno. Could (and hopefully) wrong. I just see them doing State of Plays for Horizon, and a few more. Maybe they'll try and do a PSX in December since COVID in some parts are dying down?

jukins1802d ago

Thats honestly what im hoping deep dive into vr as well as tlou factions. And whats beyond god of war as far as playstation goes.

If there's one of the way, then they need to bring it or set expectations low straight away if there's nothing groundbreaking planned.

After E3, they could use this well if they played their cards right.

Darkborn1802d ago

I think 10 or so PS exclusives were announced at E3, also like the amuckspider said, Sony has previously stated 25 exclusives are in development, and afterwords, hulst said there more games in addition with second and third parties.

1802d ago
Darkborn1802d ago

Look at the pre show with Geoff, also look at square Enix's conference.

1801d ago
King_Noctis1801d ago

People ask for you the list, so please tell them. I wonder as well, what are those 10 PS exclusive ?

DOMination-1801d ago

There might be 25 games in development but we either know what they are or they are a long way off from being shown. I've posted this studio analysis before but I think its important for some people to see. You can work out the majority of those 25 games are.

Team Asobi - Just released a game, at least 12-24 months away from announcing a new one
Polyphony - Have already announced GT7, will release in 2022.
Insomniac - One team working on SM2 which I'd have thought was a way off yet, other team just finished/supported R&C
Naughty Dog - We know they are working on TLOU remake and possibly a space game. The latter has been talked about for nearly 10 years and although exciting, there have been no rumours that this project is close yet.
Bend - We already know they are working on a new IP but is in early stages of development, at least two years away from reveal
SIE San Diego - Just released MLB The Show.. probably working on post-game support for that and next years game
SIE Santa Monica - We know they are working on God of War and won't be out until next year at earliest. At most, might be working with an indie teams as a support studio but history so far has suggested they only work on GOW titles for in-house developments
Sucker Punch - Only a year out from GoT release.. their next game will still be two years away at least
Pixelopus - One of the few unknowns - we know they are working on an Unreal 5 game in collaboration with Sony Animation although again it appears to be early-ish in development.
Guerrilla - We already know they are working on Forbidden West, release likely early next year. May have a "second team" but that's been said for five years now with no evidence of any such output. No rumours yet pointing to an imminent announcement but can't be ruled in or out at this stage.
London Studio - They have worked exclusively on support/shovelware for the last 15 years.. speculation on my part but they are probably working on generic PSVR sports/shovelware titles etc. Rumours of a AAA game in development have been around for years but I's still wager it would be a PSVR title anyway.
Media Molecule - It took them a whole generation to release DREAMS. I'm sure their next project will be quality but lets be realistic, it's years away.
-----
Housemarque and Bluepoint - just released games, if their next projects are PS Studios titles, they will also be some way away.

neutralgamer19921802d ago

i don't agree what did E3 achieve? the weeks after and the months after E3, ps5 would still sell way more than XSX. E3 hype helps when you have games coming soon after not games which show CGI/In engine trailers a without any proper gameplay/release date

Obscure_Observer1801d ago (Edited 1801d ago )

@neutralgamer1992

You better pray for Sony to show gameplay for those games or there'll be Hell to pay.

Microsoft presented more than 30 games and in-engine/CGI games for only 4 games. 3 out of 4 of those games were just announced like The Outer Worlds 2, Contraband and Redfall.

We shall see how Sony intents to counter all that with gameplay presentations. If they don't, It will be funny to see fanboys on mental gymnastics trying to spin and move the goal posts once again

neutralgamer19921801d ago

Obscure_Observer

I have been a playstation gamer for a longtime and Sony knows what it's doing. Maybe you didn't notice Sony in the past 9-12 months have released

The last of us part 2
Ghost
Demon souls
Spiderman MM
Returnal
Ratchet and clank
Bugsnax
MLB the show

Death loop
Kena
Tokyo ghostwire
Horizon
God of war
GT

Have been announced so whatever you want to say facts are facts. It's amazing because if this was Ms they would have delayed ghost and TLOU2 to be released alongside next generation

So you can keep thinking whatever you want

rlow11802d ago (Edited 1802d ago )

That would be huge if they revealed it this year. I'm looking forward to seeing how they've upgraded the experience and what killer, must have games they have up their sleeves. If the price is right (no pun intended) it will sell like hot cakes.

Sitdown1801d ago

What exactly do you anticipate them showing that would shock the industry?

neutralgamer19921801d ago (Edited 1801d ago )

More gameplay for the games they revealed because don't you think seeing actual gameplay for starfield would be a huge moment? Don't get me wrong it was a good show so no hate on the show itself. Just wanted to see more gameplay from some of the games they revealed

1Victor1801d ago

You are right sit down Sony got nothing to show like high quality games that even the competition secretly say “it’s beyond anything available in consoles” better VR experiences,
Sony they’re in such a bad situation they had to delay their flagship title for a year 🤷🏿

Sitdown1801d ago

@1Victor
Do you even read what people type, or do you just immediately read valid questions and immediately go in Sony defense mode? Sony releasing quality games won't shock the industry, as it has become the norm. PSVR2, it's expected, and Oculus is covering virtual reality as well. Or perhaps you don't understand what's being claimed when someone says shock the industry.

Sony Should Reveal the PlayStation 5 at PlayStation Experience

I prefer E3 to be focused on game announcements and demos than hardware blowouts. Seems like a bit of a waste to take time away from that when you can do hardware of your own accord.

I feel like Sony is partially not at E3 because they have PS5 games they're not ready to show and want to save it for another memorable conference. I would prefer them to announce PS5 proper at PSX this year with full specs, features, and teases for some cross-gen/launch titles and release it 3 months later in March 2020, like the Switch.

meka26112565d ago

Yea that's how I feel about it; always thought console reveals should get their own showing since there is gonna be a lot to talk about and show.
