The Xbox One strikes back

For all the criticism the Xbox One has received, it is evident that Microsoft is willing to listen to the fans and change its hardware to reflect what players want.

From ditching its digital-only strategy to removing Kinect from the package, Xbox has responded to the demands of its fans.

It’s still listening, too. This month, Microsoft is introducing a new UI to the Xbox One. It’s bringing in cross platform play with Windows 10. It’s even targeting pro-gaming with its premium and customisable Elite Controller.

That’s not all, either. Perhaps its most intriguing change is adding backwards compatibility functionality, allowing gamers to play 360 titles on their Xbox One.

Within weeks, the Xbox One will almost feel like a completely new console.

“We are on an on-going journey to listen to what fans want on how to make Xbox the very best place to play,” UK marketing director Harvey Eagle says.

Gazondaily3837d ago (Edited 3837d ago )

This just means greater competition. Yeah no way any gap will be closed globally, maybe in the US by a small margin with big-name releases but still, its good to see some competition. Makes a change from all the gloom and doom.

Backwards Compatibility is downplayed a lot but then read this:

“It really has ranked top in all of that list. If you were in the room at E3 when we announced it and saw the genuine response and surprise from the audience. It will prove popular, it’s a great value message for a 360 owner who is considering making a move to the new consoles."

He's right and it has topped the list for a reason, its why Sony spent a lot of money on PS Now for a reason.

MS are making a lot of steps in the right direction now; not enough to fix the damage done of course but as a gamer, you should at least feel some comfort in their future direction and the great lineup of games incoming. Lets hope they maintain that and don't forget us gamers in a hurry.

christocolus3837d ago

“It’s what the fans have told us that they want most,”
Eagle insists.”

Couldn't agree more. Its really nice to see MS add realy cool features to the Xbox One. This all started far back with the original xbox. Xbox One is now a full fledged windows 10 device and I can't wait to see what they do next.

thekhurg3837d ago

Same types of articles were written last year too. Microsoft needs to have a year of good things, not just a couple months because they didn't do anything else that year.

nix3837d ago (Edited 3837d ago )

here we go again... 1 month win by 25k in one region and we're talking like it's the second coming of Jesus. how desperate are the medias for a hit? it's going to strike every 2-3 times in one year but the rest of the year it's beaten like a dead horse.

@septic: PS NOW is a streaming service that let's anyone using a smart phone, tablet, tv (with internet), PS3/4/Vita to play games via their servers.

christocolus3837d ago (Edited 3837d ago )

@nix

Is your reply meant for me or someone else? Or are you just doing your usual rounds in another xbox article?

Am i wrong about MS adding cool features to the xbox one?and how is that about sales?.If your comment was for septic then you should have replied him directly. I swear its like you are in every xbox thread always downplaying stuff. Wth???

frankdrebin723837d ago

@Nix
Flogging a dead horse,..lol...yip maybe,..but that's the media for you,..build you up one minute, kick you down another.
PsNow..genuine question, IF it lets you stream games to any smart phones,tablet,TVs,..then do those games that used to be exclusive STOP being classed as an exclusive, as it can now be played on a non Sony piece of hardware??

badz1493837d ago

Seriously, is this some kind of stealh marketing for Battlefront or something? Seeing as they don't have the marketing rights for it, it seems that way. You know, since a puny win just for the 2nd time this year in its srongest ground isn't something remotely close to "striking back" IMO. And if you put Halo 5 into the equation and how they heavily spread the notion that "PS4 has no game" and "all the best games are available on Xbone" things, it feels even more pushing it!

The xbone is still being heavily outsold elsewhere in the world but winning with a week worth of Japanese PS4 number in NA is considered as striking back now? LOL mark me for trolling if you want but that is just sad! This just shows how out of touch they are with the overall gaming community.

PSN_ZeroOnyx3836d ago

Moving in the right thing means turning the X1 into the 360, awesome /s.

P.S. Congratulations to M$ for a good month.

Oh great, positive X1 article. Here comes the Sony clean-up crew.

Actually, the damage has been fixed in my opinion. Now is the time we see more exclusives from them. That was the only thing missing from last gen. If they can fix that this gen then XboxOne will be awesome.

I am currently enjoying Ryse on XboxOne, and i never thought i would like it as much, so far so great, next is Sunset Overdrive :)

YinYangGaming3837d ago

Got an XB1 this summer after being a PS4 owner since launch, I'd also recommend Forza Horizon 2 if you like racing games because it's quite amazing. Assuming you got your Xbox One recently that is just assumed you were as you're playing some of the older games

DarkOcelet3837d ago (Edited 3837d ago )

@YinYangGaming

Already played Forza Horizon 2 on X360 but i also bought it on the XOne. I will play it today once its done updating :D

And i got the Xone to play all the exclusives i missed out on.

I am gonna have a great time.

user99502793837d ago

SSOD is sickeningly good. In for a treat. Dont just plow through, go for collectibles and enjoy navigating the world and racking up multipliers.

DarkOcelet3837d ago

@martinstrings

I take my time with the games collecting everything and whatnot and enjoying the artistic work that has been put in the game and it looks great!

etownone3836d ago

Ryse is am awesome game. I really like it.

Sunset Overdrive... Nope. Didn't like it at all.

DarkOcelet3836d ago

@sammarshall102

Yeah, it got eaten by the critics. Its a shame because the game has a potential to be a great franchise.

"MS are making a lot of steps in the right direction now; not enough to fix the damage done of course "

Of course? Sorry but looking at how the Xbox One has evolved over the last 2 years I'd say Phil and the team over at Xbox have fixed the damage done which I'm assuming you're referring to the initial reveal? Might not be the console for everyone but it's definitely fixed the damage done and is now looking better and better with a great line-up of games coming in 2016, NXOE released yesterday along with BC... how you could say they haven't done enough baffles me

Gazondaily3837d ago

"how you could say they haven't done enough baffles me"

What I mean is, a lot of damage is irreversible, such as giving the sales momentum to Sony, loss of market share etc. I should have been clearer, sorry.

kenwonobi3837d ago

Still weaker hardware. Still losing worldwide, Halo lackluster, Halo moved least amount of consoles any Halo has, 2016 is right around the corner. It's Microsoft last hurrah before Sony puts pedal to the metal.

frankdrebin723837d ago

@kenny

Just figured it out,...your a glass half empty boyman aren't you?

Best line: "And the Xbox One is the fastest-selling Xbox console that we’ve had." It is OOOOOOKKKKKK to be "losing" to sony this gen. I actually appreciate it because as an X1 owner, I feel like Microsoft is working harder than ever for my dollar. But to my point the PS4 is a phenemenon as far as sales go. Nobody was able to compete. But all this "Microsoft is doomed and is losing" talk needs to go. Seems to me like everyone is winning. Except Nintendo but they may bounce back with this new system. This is good for the business. BTW fanboys don't care about the disagrees to come, i plan on getting a ps4 black friday.

bf0007779663836d ago (Edited 3836d ago )

Ok, it is striking back, so when will the xbone beat ps4 in performance?

BeefCurtains3836d ago

See: Fallout 4 performance reviews.

fanboysmackdown3836d ago

As usual the Sony fanboys have to take a shit on a positive Xbox article hey nix? Competition is great for us gamers and to f%^k with all the fanboys.

PudgeyBurrito3835d ago (Edited 3835d ago )

Yep. I must agree. The direction seems better although I think B.C is overplayed. It's a great feature but even Microsoft themselves have said the percentage of people that play B.C is low (google it). However, it keeps it all in one box and it visually helps out a bit. All in all a good feature but most people will be playing new games on Xbox One unless a sequel from the previous generation comes out on the new generation of consoles and you are catching up with the series. It's great for that as well.

If they had listened to there customers in the first place after there horrific Xbox One reveal then they wouldn't be trailing Sony Today

The feedback after that should have took Microsoft back to the drawing board, even if it meant delaying there launch.

I own both and i do admire Microsoft for trying to put things right, but seriously after that console reveal Sony Must have had the biggest party in the history of Gaming.

They even used the Xbox One reveal in there presentation and completely went the opposite way and won over a lot of Xbox Gamers.

There was a rumour that Sony was going to do a similar thing until the outcry from, Xbox fans
We will never know if this was the case though ?

nix3837d ago (Edited 3837d ago )

nah. yours is just a wishful thinking.

Last gen xbox was riding on better deals on 3rd party games, one year lead, better looking 3rd party games, cheaper skus and few well known exclusives.

This gen they have nada. They have few new IPs but not many really support new IPs in xbox community. It's a curse.if those new IPs are to pull PS community, it's too less for one to buy it.

Talking about games, latest Forza didn't even make it to the top sellers list. Halo 5 was the worst selling Halo ever. didn't sell enough consoles as previous ones. now that Xbox's biggest selling brand is out - what next? you can go and list all the new IPs coming out next year but those games are not going to help move consoles like Halo.

If you think Xbox1 is doing good sales.. SPOILER ALERT - it's selling worse than PS3 which was sony's worst selling console. MS' best is Sony's worst. that's the reality.

You can say, if they didn't have any of those bad publicity, they still would not have been in the number one. with or without bad publicity, PS4 is just doing what it was doing pre-PS3 days. Dominating.

Automatic793837d ago

@Nix

Seeing how you are so determined to state that the Xbox Community doesn't support New IP's.

What's your excuse for the Sony community not supporting Until Dawn, The Order 1886 or existing IP's like MLB the Show or Uncharted Collection, Tearaway. You keep spitting nonsense but fail to acknowledge issues in your own backyard. Please spare us from your insecurity. Stop trying to convince us we know you are a proud owner of PS4. You don't need N4g's approval.

nix3837d ago (Edited 3837d ago )

Michael,

You tell me, if those games came out exclusively on Xbox1 you think they would have sold more? No. It won't. And you know it. That's what I'm talking about. At least the PS community buy new IPs. PS community loves variety. It's not all pew pew pew for them.

I'm scared of horror movies so i skipped Until Dawn. I bought The Order. I also bought Driveclub. I bought Bloodborne. I also got Everyone's gone to the Rapture. I'm not into JRPGs or FPSes. But see i bought those games no matter how badly they were reviewed. That's what majority of PS gamers are. Someone might just buy only the JRPGs. Some might only buy FPS. Some might only buy FIFA. Some only Gran Turismo.

In Xbox camp, majority are shooter n driving game lovers.

Saddest part for MS is that - even their Ace games aren't selling much. Forza down. Halo not doing better than others. And next year Gears of War. It better do something. But I'm guessing GeOW has a smaller fan base than Halo.

And I'm surprised you added Uncharted Collection. It was bought by millions last gen that's why it's getting a collection for PS4. It was that freaking popular. why the hell would the ones who bought it already buy it again? It's for those who made the jump from xbox to ps or the ones who never played it.

Insecurity? Hahaha... I'm just stating facts. Cold hard facts.

WinAttLife3837d ago

You are a sad person. Stop spouting off like you're a consumer analyst. Just go play you're slightly skewed plastic box.

Kribwalker3836d ago

Don't go spewing crap that Xbox fans are all Pew pew pew as PlayStation has become the new Dude Bro console. My current game collection has all of the variety and different IPs and new ips including

Gears remastered
Forza horizon
Lords of the fallen
Sunset overdrive
Fantasia
Dance central
D4

Definitely hoping that this is a good sign for Microsoft and a possible resurgence of the Xbox family. I know I plan on getting one eventually, but just not sure when.

XiNatsuDragnel3123d ago

Okay possibly limited in making the console?

freshslicepizza3123d ago

The pre-order edition yes but I doubt the regular XB1X will be limited in supply.

XStation4pio_Pro3123d ago

The Scorpio editions sold out in a day. This is full retail version.

XStation4pio_Pro3123d ago

They report it’s actual sales demands, not small supply.

DaGreatOne3123d ago

So psvr, the pro, switch and now the Xbox one x will have experience launch shortages. Interesting.

XStation4pio_Pro3123d ago

The Pro didn’t have launch shortages. I walked right into Best Buy a week after launch and picked one up. There was at least 4-5 in a stack.

Razzer3123d ago

Depends on your location. Europe had PS4 Pro shortages, much like what UK is projecting.

http://www.pushsquare.com/n...

Hardware shortages at launch are hardly a rare event.

LP-Eleven3123d ago (Edited 3123d ago )

And the X1X will be just as easy to find. $500 this far into the generation? It won't have any serious shortage issue. An outlet, here or there, with shortages? Probably, but that's nothing new for any new hardware launch.

DaGreatOne3123d ago

You live in the UK? Because that's where most of the shortages took place, as it seems it will be the case this time around.

WilliamSheridan3123d ago

$500 this far into the generation? The X One launched at the same several years ago. Inflation means the value of the dollar goes down over time, hence why prices go up.

This is technically cheaper than the X One was at launch.

3123d ago
ThatDudeMunkee3123d ago

Same. I had no issues receiving one. I didn't even pre-order.

rainslacker3123d ago

The pro had some spotty shortages. It was sold out on Amazon for short periods of time over the first two months, and GS didn't have them around me regularly. Wal-mart never seemed to have them, but wal-mart kind of sucks for that kind of thing. Not sure about best buy because I was never really looking.

It wasn't impossible to find one, but it wasn't always as easy as just walking in and getting one.

This is simple common place business. It’s past the days of conspiracy theories. It’s now a fully known & used business marketing strategy. Discussed openly in business seminars globally. It’s just that gamers generally aren’t to bright about these kind of things.

LoveSpuds3123d ago (Edited 3123d ago )

Just a cheap tactic to trick people into buying the console I suspect. If you dont hurry they will all be gone........yeah, I'll take my chances chief.

Dlaw763123d ago

So does it mean the same when Sony does it because they been that tactic since the PS2 days

IRetrouk3123d ago (Edited 3123d ago )

Difference is sonys consoles do the numbers to back up the claims, ms consoles....not so much...

TheEnigma3133123d ago

Um the PS consoles has always sold a lot. The Xbone would never outsell the PS. You should worry about the Switch catching the Xbone by the end of next year.

Dlaw763123d ago

You guys are retarded I don't play sales I own all consoles except for the Switch but I will be buying it soon

TheEnigma3133123d ago (Edited 3123d ago )

I play sales because whoever sells more gets the best content and more support.

SKullDugger3123d ago

You made the SONY PONIES mad.

rainslacker3123d ago (Edited 3123d ago )

PS1 sold out because it was insanely hyped and had high demand. It was never a supply problem as Sony was meeting their manufacturing expectations. This was mostly just in the Japanese market, and they remedied it for the North American and European releases, although some spotty shortages existed across the US, although short lived.

PS2 sold out because it had huge demand on launch, and not sure what Sony's manufacturing capabilities were for it.

PS3 sold out because Sony couldn't make enough to meet demand due to the problem with sourcing the Blu-Ray Drive and CELL chip early on....both of which didn't have high enough output at the production level.

PS4 sold out because despite Sony making enough to meet what they expected to sell, actual demand was much higher than anyone would have guessed...kind of like what happened with the Wii. however, Sony recovered fairly quickly compared to some other instances in history.

Switch sold out because of the sourcing issues with the screen itself, which was in high demand due to Apple also using the same product. Nintendo can't keep them in stock because there is a higher demand than I think most would have anticipated. Not a dissimilar situation to the Wii, however it's different due to the sourcing issue.

MS said the OGX1 was going to be in short supply, and later said it was sold out after it launched, despite there being plentiful evidence it wasn't true. The OGXbox was never sold out. The 360 sold out at launch, but was quickly replenished, and didn't see any extended shortages at stores. MS has never had a long term sell out problem, and with the OGX1 they flooded the distribution channels to get shipped numbers up. Soon after, they stopped reporting sales numbers.
