New Xbox One Update Removes Kinect Gesture Support for Dashboard Navigation

Gamespot:
The upcoming New Xbox One Experience update completely removes support for gesture-based dashboard navigation through Kinect. Microsoft's Mike Ybarra says in a new interview that the company decided to cut the feature because people barely used it at all.

Yeah Kinect was pretty much useful and useless at the same time when it came to appeal but I used my Kinect only to switch to the tv really. Admittedly.

MightyNoX3849d ago (Edited 3849d ago )

It was a dumb device meant moreso to scan your room and sell you concentrated ads. As less people have used it, note how Microsoft keeps phasing it out.

First the 30%
Then the abandonment of games for it
Now turning off gestures.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Gazondaily3849d ago

Gestures usage was low for a reason. It didn't work well.

But the voice stuff is practical and actually is very useful. I don't think it is a dumb device. Itsactually quite clever but ultimately operates as a universal remote

3849d ago
christocolus3849d ago (Edited 3849d ago )

"It was a dumb device meant moreso to scan your room and sell you concentrated ads."

Wut??? Lmao xD

Have you even used the device? ever? The voice commands work really well.skype is something my family, friends and i use a lot. If MS feels the need to remove gestures then its fine..im sure they'll put the freed up resources to better use somewhere else.

Godmars2903849d ago (Edited 3849d ago )

"Gestures usage was low for a reason. It didn't work well."

Yet Kinect's main supposed strength, the key advertised feature meant to gaming, was motion controls. If was just about voice command they could have just done it through a headset or an iOS app.

With the XO they were prepared to make it's use mandatory with many a fan more than willing to defend it. Some still defend it. Yet now its presence has been reduced.

Is it really that hard to admit that Kinect was a bad idea? Introduced too quickly with attempt to implement and develop it further just plain poor.

@christocolus:
At one point, when it was going to be mandatory, MS was talking up Kinect as a marketing research device. Something which could watch anyone in the room recording their reactions to commercials. Using it count people in order to set fees for watching special events. They were almost more about selling such to advertisers and the likes of the NFL than XO owners. But that all dried up with kinect being optional and few buying it besides.

RzaDaRazor3849d ago

You are a dumb device. If you've never used one for an extended period of time, which you obviously haven't, you can just troll articles and say it's a "dumb device". The Kinect is amazing and it helps separate the Xone from PS4. Gestures were pretty useless but the voice commands are well worth the $100 buy in cost. I will never have another entertainment center where I cannot talk to it.

3849d ago
frostypants3849d ago (Edited 3849d ago )

@RzrDaRazor "Gestures were pretty useless but the voice commands are well worth the $100 buy in cost."

So you paid $100 for voice recognition software and a mic? That a horrible deal.

bf0007779663849d ago

@RzaDaRazor it's the evident tha MS have abandoned kinect but still want to sell it

donthate3849d ago (Edited 3849d ago )

It wasn't a dumb device, but people like you kept talking smack about it and so MS has no choice but to shelve it.

If MS came out and did any support for it now, people will complain the old tired "why are MS supporting Kinect? They could use that resources for games, games, and games!".

The same mentality killed innovation on consoles, and now we have a dumb console that is used mostly to play games.

Killed all innovation!!!

I can only imagine what would happen if people screamed, I only want my phone to make phone calls when smart phones were released what we would have today.

Godmars2903849d ago

@donthate:
It never worked fully as advertised. The Star Wars Kinect title was obviously and poorly staged. Project Milo was the being of Peter Molyneux's empty promises, the man's verbal diarrhea during interviews, being shown for what they were. No Kniect title either worked properly or managed to honestly gain attention for more than a few weeks. It was a bad product with tons of advertising that tried to say differently but the obvious kept showing through.

Smartphones are thing today for the simple fact that they *WORK*. Kinect never did.

badz1493849d ago

So...it's ok to remove features now that MS is doing it, ha? Strange...

r2oB3848d ago (Edited 3848d ago )

Wow, I'm seeing people ok with Kinect being just a remote. It's ok that it's just used to skype and do voice commands. People spent the $150 mark up for Kinect, and people are ok with it. Talk about trying to justify a purchase. A less expensive camera could do skype and voice commands properly if that's all it's to be used for. No need for a $150 peripheral with advanced cameras and tech, if it's only going to be used for basic functionality.

Seems like people are reluctant to admit that they fell for the whole "Kinect is integral and that it cannot be unbundled" drivel Microsoft fed them. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice...

People saying "I love the Kinect and always use it for (insert basic function here)" is like someone saying "I'm so glad I bought that 80 inch 4K 240hz HDTV, I use it to watch all my VHS tapes on my VCR" (a touch of hyperbole, I know, but you get the point). Paying a premium price for a product that only does basic stuff, and being happy about it, is funny.

$500 well spent, lol. /s

fr0sty3848d ago (Edited 3848d ago )

@septic, a simple mic is all that is required for voice recognition, as PS4 proves. A simple webcam could do the skype stuff. The rest of it was just gimmick that nobody really wanted.

@R2, beat me to it. Very little of what Kinect was hyped to do turned out to be why people say they like it.

Irishguy953848d ago

Why was kinect bundled with Xbone originally? Because it was vital to the system. According to microsoft.

Just saying.

I just bought an xbone yesterday and im extremely happy I waited.

Meishpizza3848d ago

It's an interesting device but not practical for gaming, and the argument that it's great for voice control is lame. They can do voice control by using a microphone you don't need Kinect for that. Maybe they can use some of the tech for VR controls in the future when MS decides to come out with a new system powerful enough to handle Oculus.

nosferatuzodd3848d ago

Wow how fast people change their tune I remember ppl saying how great Kinect is and how advance it is and thTs why Xbox cost more than the ps4 and how the ps4 eye is inferior to it .. Now has soon has ms remove it it's a dumb idea boy the hypocrisy of n4g is over 90000

Major_Glitch3848d ago

Wait a minute...you mean to tell me the device that failed to make any meaningful impact last gen, failed to make any meaningful impact this gen too?! But the MS PR brigade kept saying how new, futuristic, and NECESSARY("...In fact, Microsoft said Kinect and Xbox One were one in the same...") Kinect was to the future of gaming. Odd. The MS PR brigade is usually pretty accurate about these things. I mean, they were totally right about...about...about.

donwel3848d ago

@donthate
I honestly can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not.
Here's something to consider though, maybe the reason why people want "games, games, games" is because it is a GAMES console.
Just a thought.

Kribwalker3848d ago

@r20b
W
I use my Kinect daily. I use Xbox fitness in the winter time, we play dance central when we have parties, I use the voice commands to start parties, change inputs, turn everything on and off, load games (since 95% of my games are digital I don't have to switch discs or anything either which is a bonus as well) not to mention skype with family members and other uses. It was a $100 premium when I purchased the system, and I'd get it again if given the choice. For me, gesture dashboard control has been disabled from the start, so I don't have a problem with them turning it off on their own.

alabtrosMyster3848d ago

@Septic you just demonstrated why it is a useless device, they could replace it with a built in microphone and you could switch on the tv with your voice to fell like you are in the future! Amazing!

Love the evolution of this system pretty cool to phase out whats not needed yet the voice gestures work stil. Use those resources elsewhere !

kneon3849d ago

So the next evolution is to remove the camera entirely and just use a microphone, as they should have from the beginning.

marioJP873849d ago

"XBOX ON" never F'ing works correctly, man. It still pisses me off.

TeaRunner3848d ago

I don't use it alot, but when playing FIFA, you can call out substitutes during the game without hitting pause.

Found that to be super useful. Really speeds up that part of the game. Other than that I don't use it.

UltraNova3848d ago

Yes but you can do that using a simple microphone not a $100 dollar dead weight as it turn out.

showtimefolks3848d ago

Ms is giving up on kinect so maybe now Xbox fanboys can also take it easy and let this whole kinect is awesome thing go

Razor

People like you are the real problem with in gaming and publishers look at people like you when they are trying to take advantage of gamers

Season passes
Launching broken games
Gimmicks
Micro transactions
A year later game of the year edition at full price

Julion07153848d ago

Or jus maybe he really like his Kinect and don't need ppl like you to tell him other wise he's happy so who are you to come in here and hate on something you dnt own jus like the rest of the fake Xbox owners anyone who really use Kinect know how great it is to have

BallsEye3848d ago

I use a lot of kinect in dashboard but only voice commands. Hand gestures are pretty useless. Love it in games tho like battlefield or Dead Rising.

Going from full screen to home and vice versa worked really well, I used to just do it occasionally when people were over, made me feel like a magician.

But navigating the dashboard with gestures was abyssmal

MasterCornholio3849d ago

Understood. Thanks for answering me.

joeorc3848d ago (Edited 3848d ago )

It did not have to be that way though, kinect worked, it really does. Microsoft just excluded things that needed to be there in order for the platform to work in viability past control, but cannot be effective for hardcore game User controlled interactive methods without such it would not work correctly.

The problem was not the technology, it was how the implemented kinect was missing features to offset its limited viability usage without those key functions it would not work. If you look at oculus Rift, project Morpheus's or is: playstation VR you will notice something.

In order for kinect to really have viability for hard core gaming , it needed to go Hand in Hand with a motion control method where the optical lenses of the cameras could focus and track your users movements in a game development design that allows the camera to completely focus its compute on very fine focused body locations and points of body language in action.

There is nothing wrong with kinect, its Microsoft's implementation of cutting out a control scheme to coincide with keep connected to kinect at the same time that really is exactly why its not been able to be viable for hardcore game control mechanism with out those other much needed control mechanics needed.

Good thing is with Oculus Rift Microsoft is pretty set to be able to offer such, that is if Microsoft invests into Oculus Rift though.

Major_Glitch3848d ago

Yea, the fanboys really tried their best to convince everyone else that Kinect was awesome. Too bad they failed...both times.

kenwonobi3848d ago

Yep but I think slowly killing off Kinect sends a bad signal. It wasn't completely useless with the right applications of its use. See PSVR.

BallsEye3848d ago

I had zero issues, both with voice commands and hand gestures. It was working perfectly fine. No idea how anyone can have hard time using it. Doesn't mean it had any good use in dashboard tho.

Ex-Blizzard president hypes Nintendo up as Xbox head claims consoles are "antiquated"

Xbox's Sarah Bond talks leaving console exclusivity behind, but ex-Blizzard president Mike Ybarra believes Nintendo is doing it right.

Microsoft always hypes their direction for Xbox, but they often fail. What happened to what they used to say about exclusive games being important? Isn't that why they buy studios? XD

RaidenBlack209d ago (Edited 209d ago )

MS buying Acti Blizz will be the pinacle of MS blunder.
Other previous blunders ~ they could've survived from that even after compounded.
But that sale from Kotick is what's ruining and what will ruin Xbox. (We lost so many interesting 1st/2nd party games, coz lack of funds after that 68Billion Call of Duty purchase).
Till even the Bethesda deal all seemed fine.

Reaper22_209d ago

Nah, the facts don't back up what you say. People have been saying what's gonna ruin xbox for years now. Sony far, it hasn't happened.

crazyCoconuts209d ago

The way I see it is a company that sucked at managing game studios went out and bought more game studios

RaidenBlack209d ago

@crazyCoconuts
they sorta were getting better at it, after Series X launch .... but then they got greedy after the BGS deal

peppeaccardo209d ago

MS Execs have lost touch with reality and they are living in an alternative universe where console and exclusives are no more .... i guess they got what they deserved as they were never in this business for the players but simply to satisfy the pleasures of the board !!!

S2Killinit208d ago

Literally, take everything that comes out of MS mouths and flip it to know the truth. Literally.

MetroidFREAK21209d ago

I mean I'll keep buying their games (as long as proper physicals are made) on Switch 2 and PS5

Jingsing209d ago

Well that isn't going to be a lot of games, I think most Xbox games are not on disc. That is by design.

MetroidFREAK21209d ago

I know. I have Gears Reloaded and will get Ninja Gaiden 4. Here's hoping the Halo campaign remake is on a proper disc

raWfodog209d ago

It's obvious to everyone except Xbox how important consoles and exclusivity is to innovation and driving the industry forward. Someone told me I'm taking her comments out of context but it seems Mike Ybarra also didn't get the memo.

stupidusername209d ago

Nintendo stayed true to their exclusives and innovated with Switch while Sony and Microsoft chased specs and branched out into live service games, subscription services and went multiplat with their biggest exclusives, either on steam or the opposing platform.
Xbox seem like a lost cause, Sony need to find their footing again after betting too many resources on cancelled live service games, while Nintendo seem to be striving.

It seems like a turning point in the industry. I'm interested to see what the landscape will look like in 5+ years.

Tariffs used by Xbox as "an excuse to continue raising prices", says former Blizzard president

Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra has criticised Microsoft's recent price hike of Xbox consoles in the US, stating "console price increases are not tariff issues, they are profit issues".

244d ago
Eonjay243d ago (Edited 243d ago )

I mean... he would probably have more insight into the cost of Xbox than most.

If this is true, I think we can only be so surprised as Microsoft has been telegraphing their desire to ditch hardware for some time. It also comes off as profoundly greedy. They literally have more money than anyone.

243d ago
LoveSpuds243d ago

I am not an economist but from my basic understanding, profit issues and tariff issues are going to be closely related I would think.

Not suggesting MS won't milk the situation but I can't imagine any consumer electronics company wants to raise costs over time.

Perhaps Yabarra is running cover for that orange cretin?

Eonjay243d ago

No. He is implying that the first price increase was for the tariffs and the latest round is just using the tariffs as an excuse to jack up the price again.

Outside_ofthe_Box243d ago (Edited 243d ago )

"No. He is implying that the first price increase was for the tariffs and the latest round is just using the tariffs as an excuse to jack up the price again."

They are raising it because of tariffs. Raising it just because doesn't benefit them at all. Less people buy your system, you get bad press for raising it a second time, etc.

Price only went up in the US. It's Mr. "Freedom of Speech for only those I after with" 's fault.

243d ago
raWfodog243d ago

It makes absolutely no sense to me for Xbox to raise the prices on their hardware when it was already struggling to sell at their previous prices, tariffs or not. Or maybe I'm just viewing their hardware sales as 'poor' when compared to PS5 and Switch sales.

OptimusDK243d ago

That is not the point. If your cost goes up because of tariffs, note consoles are not exempt from tariffs, you can choose to sell at a loss or hike prices. It’s not that difficult. Ms can sell games beyond the consoles so they don’t have the same incentive as leg Sony. Thank TRUMP for this

raWfodog243d ago (Edited 243d ago )

Yeah, I know very well how tariffs work. My comment was that it makes no sense. Just stop selling the product if no one was buying it here in the US at the previous prices. Sales aren't going to get any better with this new price hike.

And Ybarra's point was that tariffs was the main reason for price hikes back in May but that is not the case now:
"In a later response, Ybarra added the previous price increase in May was justified due to the rise in tariffs at the time, but that's not the case with this new rise.

Their console business and GamePass go hand in hand. If they were to stop consoles, they would be, in effect, killing GamePass. The vast majoirty of GP subs are console gamers. If you remove the console, you no longer have 30 million gamers embedded in your ecosystem. The majority will never move to PC gaming and buy a $2000 PC. They will go to Playstation where there is no GamePass.

Shane Kim327d ago

You answered your own question. Game pass coming to PS in a future near you.

Eonjay327d ago

Naw i don't so. Sony and Nintendo probably dont want it.

jznrpg327d ago (Edited 327d ago )

I can’t see Sony or Nintendo killing their own games sales. GamePass will be a PC only thing for a while with Xbox logos slapped on random devices. GamePass probably dies at some point without enough subs

got_dam327d ago

Could work... if they were publishing anything worth having. Bethesda is just making the same tired stuff over and over. Obsidian is a good studio, but they have been slipping hard. nXile isgreat, bit the last thing they even talked about was wasteland 3. Activision/blizzard is either the devil, or his closest friend.

neutralgamer1992327d ago

Even if Xbox only sells 50 million consoles next generation, Microsoft still wins. Why? Because Game Pass is the foundation of their long-term strategy — and it’s working. With 35–40 million subscribers paying monthly, Xbox doesn’t need to dominate hardware to be highly profitable.

Here’s the real model:

Xbox sells a console.

Players sign up for Game Pass.

They buy accessories.

Microsoft sells games on other platforms, which ironically pushes Game Pass even more: “Why pay $80 for this game on PS5 or Switch when you could play it for $20/month on Xbox or PC — and access hundreds more?”

Let’s break that down: $80 for a single new game, or four full months of Game Pass with dozens of AAA titles, day-one launches, and rotating third-party hits. For a lot of people — especially casual gamers, families, and budget-conscious players — the choice is obvious.

Most subscribers aren’t hardcore gamers hunting for deals. They pay full price month to month, often seeing it as a low-friction, all-in-one gaming service. Microsoft is counting on that — and it’s paying off. A large percentage of users also forget to cancel subscriptions, meaning passive revenue continues to roll in until they notice. That’s the psychology behind the success of the subscription model across industries.

And don’t forget Microsoft’s first-party firepower. With all the studios they’ve acquired, they’re in a position to release at least one major exclusive every month. Combine that with partnerships to bring in second-party and third-party titles, and Game Pass becomes a constantly evolving platform — not just a library, but a service with momentum.

Bottom line: Xbox isn’t going the Sega route. They’re not stepping back — they’re going deeper. Game Pass, not hardware, is the centerpiece of their strategy. The console is just the gateway

Jigga69327d ago

Series aren't even at 30M yet. Thinking it could reach 50M next gen is a joke. Move on.

Eonjay327d ago

I highly doubt the can push 20 million next Gen. The console is dead and watching these folks trying to reanimate the corpse is getting kinda morbid.

StoneTitan327d ago

gamepass will crash and burn in the next couple of years

blacktiger327d ago

you do realize console is dying. Not to mention next gen console might be hybrid meaning it may not just be gamepass but also Steam. Meaning ppl will end up buying games from Steam rather Gamepass.
