"I’m Loving the Steam Controller So Far"

RashBandicoot writes: "It’s no secret that PC gamers are slowly crawling away from their desktop stations and into the living room. Big screen, big couch, big speakers—things that truly help us get immersed and relaxed while playing our games. The problem, especially for PC gamers, is that we end up losing options. Sure we can use a wireless mouse and keyboard or a wireless gamepad but it doesn’t always work that well. The Steam Controller is meant to be the solution by allowing players to not only use it as a gamepad but also act as a replacement for your keyboard and mouse. So far it’s working."

nothing will replace mouse and keyboard, nothing.

--bienio--3862d ago

True, but I still give a chance and try:)

solar3862d ago

you are correct, however I admire Valve for trying to innovate the video game controller. Mine should be arriving tomorrow!

deerain3862d ago

If you have a mouse and keyboard and you like it then you wont want to get one and that's fine as this controller is not built for you guys but for those people who consider playing games with a controller.

I have no room for the keyboard and mouse so I don't have that option. I pre-ordered and so I have the steam controller already and its way better than a console controller, using the track pad with the motion sensor works really well with first person shooters, you wont get the accuracy of a mouse and keyboard but its pretty close. It takes a bit of getting use to though you cant just get one and after one day stamp you feet when you don't play well it took a few weeks to get used to it but now its by far the best controller I have used.

starchild3862d ago

That's exactly how I envisioned it. I knew there would be an adaptation period, but I also felt certain that the people writing it off were jumping the gun. I saw the potential in it. I can't wait to get mine.

starchild3862d ago (Edited 3862d ago )

No, it won't replace keyboard and mouse, but then again keyboard and mouse isn't practical for me in some cases. It's cumbersome when I'm sitting on the couch or in bed.

All of these input devices have their pros and cons. One can't completely replace the others.

I boxed mine back up, I was hopeful. Didn't work out.

ChronoJoe3862d ago

A couple of my friends got this and found themselves disappointed. Not sure what they were expecting, I think they thought the accuracy trade offs were too steep from sticking with mouse and keyboard.

It really is a middle ground between the two, sacrificing the accuracy of mouse and keyboard for the ergonomics of a controller but in the process it's a sort of jack of all trades, master of none.

solar3862d ago

I plan on using it for platformers and puzzle games. hard to un-train 23 years of keyboard and mouse gaming.

ChronoJoe3862d ago

Why use it for a platformer? Wouldn't a regular controller be better? The face buttons on the Steam Controller aren't best placed, ergonomically.

I can see why you might want to for puzzle games though, as long as there's no rush to act. Same with games like Civilisation or Divinity... in turn based games the controller might be more comfortable than keyboard and mouse, while at the same time, the sacrifices to accuracy will have no significant effect due to the slow paced nature of the games.

solar3862d ago

Well I have to try the controller first mate. I have a XBOX controller, which is weird for me because I've always gamed on PS consoles my entire life, but find the Xbox controller far more comfy. But I want to try something new. Controllers have not evolved that much and I am interested.

ChronoJoe3861d ago

If it doesn't work out you can always use a PS4 or PS3 controller plus DSTool (makes windows think its a XBOX controller).

solar3861d ago

Yep :)

I am actually using the controller right now...it will take some getting used to, but it really is fucking slick! I really love the trigger buttons on the back, for the hand grips.

For me, I love it for everything but shooters. Especially in games like Civ, the Steam Controller is heavenly.

terrible design for anything but point and click.

Leak claims a new Steam Controller is currently "being tooled" for mass production

Steam Controller 2 anyone? A leak suggests a return to a dedicated controller from Valve.

That would be really nice. The Steam Controller was one of the most unique controllers out there. It wasn’t great for traditional gaming, but it worked very well for PC-focused games like RTS, 4X, or FPS.

I just hope they don’t assemble it in the US like the original. That caused serious issues with supply, warranty, and especially spare parts.

Its pretty neat once you get used to the layout. I have mine sync with my steam deck.

The Frustrating Failed Experiment That Was The Steam Controller

TheGamer Writes "I really tried with the Steam Controller. Valve's first foray into creating its own bespoke gamepad tailored specifically for PC gaming was, putting it mildly, poorly received. It launched in 2015, but by 2019 the company had quietly discontinued it. However, while everyone was gleefully dumping on it, I was determined to get my money's worth. I bounced off it immediately like everyone else, but I thought: Valve is smart."

They should of added some sort of center point on the right track pad, maybe a dip in the center or a slight bump, I think that could help in games for controllers?

Espangerish1307d ago

They really just needed the second stick for me. A control scheme alone the lines of the deck would have been a big improvement

gamerz1306d ago

Still use it for controlling my living room pc. Never liked it for games. One neat thing is the scroll-wheel function by dragging your finger around the perimeter of the left circlepad - clockwise for down, counter-clockwise for up.

IanTH1306d ago (Edited 1306d ago )

It's primary value truly is in games that don't support any kind of controller input. You can do a decent job of grafting something usable for games with only direct mouse input, like strategy games and the like, thanks to the touchpads.

Outside that? The customization is really quite excellent, but it is almost impossible to use in place of a traditional controller in a lot of circumstances. It's a nice niche option to have, but I was certainly never able to have it completely replace an XB or PS controller when a game called for one.

MadLad1306d ago

I use mine all the time still.
