Why SOMA is a perfect video game narrative

For many years, video game fans and commentators have discussed and debated the merits of storytelling in video games. Some would go as far as to say that some storytelling in video games apes that of the stories found in Hollywood films and many developers clearly take reference from the cinematic world in their stories. However, I have often believe that there is an inherent problem with this as video games and films, whilst having a large degree of similarity, are in fact greatly different mediums and video games should celebrate their inherent uniqueness when compared to other mediums such as books and films. That’s why I was blown away by Frictional Games latest release , sci-fi horror game SOMA, as not only did it tell a compelling and complex story but it was a story that would have only worked in the medium of video games.

The game's story is incredible. Head and shoulders better than 90% of video game narratives.

I think any problems were gameplay-related, but I had none personally. Really enjoyed it.

I don't agree. I hate the cheesy, wonky voice over that doesn't fit, but that's a personal opinion. Other than that I think the dialogue tries really hard to make the subject matter more complicated than it actually is which makes it come across as quite pompous & unnecessary.

The atmosphere however is outstanding & its standout feature.

SOMA, a Ten Year Reunion

WTMG's Leo Faria: "I wanted to keep this retro rewind brief as SOMA is something better experienced when you know very little about it. It might not be the best walking simulator I’ve ever played, but I was floored by its amazing story and premise. Jump into it with an open mind and little to no knowledge about. After a good eight hours, the story will be over, but that’s when you’re going to start philosophizing about its topics and themes. It might not be a brilliant game per se, but I also don’t think it would have been as effective as it was in any other medium. Give it a go, it’s totally worth your time, even after a decade."

I hated the actual game but loved the story, even 10 years later that ending still sticks with me and makes me think what is life and what is living.

I love games that have a story stick with me.

Me too, great story, but I did not enjoy that gameplay, really wish the gameplay had been better.

I’m not into run away and/or hide type games generally if not done very well either
