Funny you mention that. Just today, I've been debating whether to pre-order this game.

Funny thing is, what I've seen of it so far OUTRIGHT impresses me, and I REALLY DO want to play it. But for some reason, I don't have that same, "would pre-order in a heartbeat" feeling like I've got with Resistance 2.

I can't put my finger on it, but perhaps it's because I'm afraid that the game in it's entirety may end up to be too generic despite it's groundbreaking graphics (i.e., same sort of enemies, levels, objectives, etc.). Then again, I'm a complete Killzone noob, and know absolutely nothing about the series (not even the PSP version), so my feelings may be the result of sheer naivete.

Still, I'm gonna be keeping a really close eye on this one, and I've got a gut feeling that I will likely end up picking it up on launch after all.

But it is one of the few rare titles where I'll be sifting through the fine details of what reviewers and previewers have to say about the game as it nears closer to release.

Give the guy some credit for being one of the few members here who actually puts a hefty dose of thought and consideration into their posts...unlike the usual senseless noise we're all accustomed to.

Needless to say, you don't need to read it, but I highly recommend you do; there's some really good, thought-provoking stuff in there. ;)

you do realize that most of what you said makes very little sense? so here goes....
1. new gamer or not...anyone who buys games based on a review and not on their game interests is not very bright. you, mr. new gamer need to learn to think and judge products for yourself. it's your money, buy games YOU think you'll enjoy. learn to think for yourself. if a game gets a great score, but it isn't a genre you like; are you still buying it? games are enjoyed on an individual basis. you can enjoy a game even if it "only" has a metacritic score of 89, can't you? if review scores are the only criteria you look at then you aren't a gamer and never will be.
2 BR....so what if you have a large dvd library? i do too. but the new tech is exciting. i'm not suggesting replacing all of your discs with BR. what ps3 does give you is the chance to watch movies in hi-def. they look stunning. and being someone who has said you like movies then BR is the next logical step. and who pays retail for anything? i buy most of my BR discs off of amazon. with shipping i pay between 14-20 dollars. not that much for something that will be with you the rest of your life. and no; while upscaled looks nice, it doesn't compare to hi-def.
3.live vs. psn......a new gamer such as yourself couldn't possibly be so hardcore to make the immediate judgements you describe in your post. it sounds like the same tired 360 fanboy rant that litters threads on this site. new gamers will gravitate to free. who doesn't love free? and what new gamers are going to be throwing themselves into online right away? having never gamed before, they will see the free experience as a much safer way to "test the waters" so to speak. so this part of your post is an epic fail.
4. you talk about not needing wi-fi? true, but wi-fi is just an example of the extras you get with ps3. it's not for you but others would disagre. there's also dedicated hdd support by devs. for example. clearly a positive. also, you can swap in any larger gig hdd you want. sony doesn't force you to by an expensive proprietary hdd like microsoft does. so don't discount the extras. there's a lot of value packed in the ps3.
finally, we come to the most imp. fact of all: buying a ps3 means you have bought a QUALITY PIECE OF ELECTRONICS. backed by a company that just doesn't "give up" on its consumers after 4 years. look around at the other choices carefully mr."new gamer". ever hear of RROD? get familiar with that term. find out the limitations of the standard dvd9 format. better make sure your hands aren't too small to hold the oversized 360 controller. ever hear of the UE3? better look into that cause that's what all 360 games seem to utilize and they all look very similar. make sure you understand that after you pay for the game; your internet service, and 360 console....ms will still expect you to pay MORE to utilize the online component to your games.
yes, mr. "new gamer", your not thinking too clearly. i suggest you do your homework on the gaming scene; because clearly you aren't looking at the big picture.

most of the answers to your next batch of questions are still in that first post, so i won't repeat it here.

but i think that it then boils down to the preference of games you like to play.

and if all you care about are AAA titles, well, that's a subjective definition.

for example, i think games like Mass Effect, Bioshock, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank Future, Gears of War, and Metal Gear Solid 4 are AAA titles.

i also feel like games like Resistance, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, and Ninja Gaiden Sigma are in that A-AA category as well.

only you know what games you like, and the best thing to do is play a demo or rent the game if possible, or play on a friends console to get a better idea of the title, and if it suits your tastes.

as for online, again, that depends on the type of online gamer you are.

i think Resistance and Warhawk are some of the most fun i've had online and with friends since the original Halo. the fact that you can play those games for free anytime you want is a bonus.

as for $50 a year, that also boils down to what you are willing to sacrifice. to me, a person who IS on a budget, $50 a year is the cost of one game a year.

am i willing to sacrifice Fallout 3, or Resistance 2, or Little Big Planet, or Fable 2, or any of the other titles releasing this year that have me excited, just so i can continue to play COD4 with my friends on LIVE?

personally, i am not. and fortunately, with a PS3, i don't HAVE to give up any of those games for an online fee. i can enjoy the games i listed above, AND still play COD4 online, and any other online game at no additional cost to me. my internet already costs me and my fiance $70 a month. that month when our hypothetical $50 for LIVE would hurt something fierce ($120 for that month, on top of all the other bills/gas/groceries we have to budget for).

i can only speak about my own experiences with LIVE and PSN, but, as far as i can tell, i can do EVERYTHING i need to do when i'm in the mood to play online with the PSN;

i can send messages to people on my friends list, either in game, or using the convenient in game media bar access to message them.

and once we are in the game, on most titles (like GTAIV, Soul Calibur 4, etc), i can invite them to my game FROM the game, and have them join that way.

i can use my Bluetooth headset to talk to them once we're in the lobby/game, and, really, that's ALL i need for me personally. but like i said, i can only speak for myself, not everybody else, and in particular the diehard online gamers.

i play online to have a quick time with friends i may not get to see often (one of my buds lives in Simi Valley, which is about 2 hours away from Los Angeles, so i only see him in person every once in a while. we can play on the PSN however). i don't care much for accolades, or gamerscores, or rep, or anything like that, i just want to have fun with pals. i get that with the PSN, so i'm satisfied, though i completely understand it if people want more.

EDIT - i forgot your last point; if you are a gamer on a limited budget, and the asking prices of the 360 and PS3 are still too much for you at this point (and $300-$400 is a lot of money either way you slice it), then maybe you should hold off until the price is right, or try and save up. it's only gaming. when i was younger, i often had to wait YEARS until my mom was able to afford a gaming console, and often, the NEW consoles were out by the time i got the "current one."

So, since you say you own a PS# your question must be hypothetical. So you have created a hypothetical charater that has little need for some of the added feature found in the PS3. What if your hypothetical character doesn't play online? What if your hypothetical wants to be wireless?

Oh, you say "these are questions I had when purchasing a PS3", (referring to specific issues like where your TV and CPU are found in your house). Yet, It seems you already answered these for yourself, so what are you asking here? You had specific reasons that you may not find added value in what the PS3 offers yet you bought one anyway. What point are you trying to make?

games like God of War, Fable, and even Gears of War didn't innovate. they simply did the best they could do in that genre.

as for Killzone 2, i don't know, the whole badge system is pretty cool, and they are also implementing a level system and a few other things. being able to mix and match badge skills means there's going to be some fun, interesting combinations in online matches.

Killzone 2 doesn't have to be, or beat COD4 for me to have a good time. it just has to be a fun game. from the looks of the various gameplay videos i've seen, Killzone 2 looks gorgeous, and the gunfights seem crazy intense. that's really all i feel i can ask for from ANY FPS title, considering how the limited perspective (uh, first person) makes gameplay innovation EXTREMELY difficult, so FPS innovation tends to boil down to technology(ie, everyone went gaga over Half Life 2's gravity gun and character and world detail. why? the technology, not for any real innovative gameplay. the graphics and improved physics helped immensely with the immersion factor of Half Life 2), which Killzone 2 has in spades.

To be honest the only reason I'm going to buy this is to see how awesome it looks when you shoot the Helghast. From the videos it looks like it has some great death animations.

Killzone 2 looks great, and i'm pleasantly surprised at the way it's shaping up. i though Killzone was ok, too ambitious for the poor PS2 to handle at the time, but i really loved Killzone: Liberation on the PSP. that game showed me that Guerrilla Games has talent, and helped get me excited for Killzone 2.
