Have Games Indeed Become too ‘Low Expression?’

The industry has recently and rapidly been seeing an increase in games where players have the creative control and are able to craft their own story. Games like No Man’s Sky, Wild and Dreams are all games where the creative control and story lays in the hands of the player, but is this trend really for the better?

Eh.. the DE guy was wrong imo.. not every game has to have different endings..
For example Super Mario bros has different levels that you can go to but the ending is always the same... you beat bowser and toad will flip you off and say "The princess is in another castle". And we still love the game. Because it's what it's.

I think there's a place for both types of games. We may have seen WiLD, No Man's Sky and Dreams at PGW, but we also saw Detroit which is at the opposite end of the spectrum.

The reason I have stayed gaming is for story driven titles. I can't speak for everyone but at the age of 23 games like Mario don't entertain me anymore. I need stories to invest myself into. The playing field is big enough for all sorts of games. When games get me emotional there is a sign of respect that I give the medium for coming this far an accomplishing that.

Here's the popular trend going on in n4g atm...

Ask a stupid question regarding a game, put a picture of a Sony exclusive as a thumbnail.

I'm okay as long as we still get these games where an experience has been crafted for us beforehand. Both types of games are great and I wouldn't want one to become popular at the expense of another.

Totally agreed...when Spector actively called for a boycott of these games by saying we should "vote with our wallet", he lost a lot of credibility in my eyes. There is room for all sorts of games, who is he or anyone else to actively call for the death of something that many people thoroughly enjoy. To me the thing that would be the most detrimental to the games industry isn't the lack of more games with branching paths & deep gameplay systems, the death of variety & choice would be far more negatively impactful.

No Man’s Sky: Assemble Your Creatures for Battle in the Xeno Arena with the Newest Free Update

Sean writes: "Last month’s Remnant update caused much hilarity as you tooled with your newfangled gravity guns and customisable exocraft, transporting precarious industrial cargo across uneven terrain in a classic risk vs. reward fight. Our latest update is a whole different beast."
