Video game logos or idents not just identify game companies we have known to love (and sometimes hate), but also invoke our sense of identity as gamers.

Logos are a huge thing but when it comes to consoles I think the intro is just as big of a representation which Sony failed to understand with the PS4 since it doesn't have one. Such a disappointment on that front. I also don't like the fact they don't use the colored PlayStation logo anymore and instead only use the Black/White version.

Bathyj3889d ago

Exactly what I was going to say

http://logok.org/wp-content...

This logo is a classic. If I didnt harbor hopes of ever having sex again I would get this as a tattoo. The plain colourless logo feels just that, colourless and lifeless.

_-EDMIX-_3889d ago

err not really. I don't think its entire success hinges on a logo.

I think its best to have a logo for the concept of the platform as a general whole vs specific to PS4. What makes PS special is not 1 PS system vs another, its the teams that build those games.

Them having 1 logo for PS helps identify the platform with the company vs some different or specific concept or idea tied directly to a platform.

I'm very much ok with PS having logo for PS in general vs each system has some different logo, message etc.

What PS does well for PS4, is what they did well with PS3.

Delivering great series gen after gen after gen.

TWB3888d ago

Dat PS1 logo and startup.

It was probably some sort of a mind control thing. Now we can never forget it.

Sad how each PS console just had more and more meh startup than the previous.

rocketleague3889d ago

New consoles need new logos. It defines change. Hoping we get a new one soon

MASTER_RAIDEN3889d ago

logos are an incredibly important part of the identification process. Theyre an instantanious way for the consumer to recognize a level of quality theyre familiar with. that being said, sometimes a rebranding is an order when a company shifts focus.

MikeOxonfyre3888d ago

Logos mean jacksh!t to the younger generation... In fact, many don't want ANY form of advertisement or company/product representation whatsoever in there products...unless it's a sh1tty new I-Phone, of course...as the masses of them are mindless.... with a minority being on the smarter end.

I'm 41, the PSone is still my fave console of all time, & although I loved that colour logo, & startup sound....It mean't nothing, compared to the MASSES of great games, & revolutionary new 3D games that I enjoyed. I have never enjoyed a console so much... Just perfect age, perfect NEW 3D games, & the fact I was a rampant pothead also helped. PSOne was the pinnacle for me.....PS2 was definitely up there as 2nd best machine EVER... but it was a significant margin that PS1 had the edge...

I just hope that PS4 gets Sony back there....I want more of there awesome exclusives... Too many of there GREATEST developers went by the wayside, WHICH WAS ALL SONY'S FAULT... They killed off Zipper, for reasons unknown, they killed off London Studios, because THEY THEMSELVES MADE THE MISTAKES, they killed off half off Santa Monica Studios... They also delegated awesome game makers, like Cambridge Studios, of Medievil, Primal & Ghosthunter fame, to making Home & Singstar shite.. They canned The Getaway 3, & the even more awesome looking 8 Days.... They bloody a-holed Ken Kutaragi....I mean, this guy IS PLAYSTATION.. HE MADE IT WHAT IT IS..

I believe Sony would have had WAAAAAAY less chance of success in this industry, without Ken... He was a mad bastard, but he is a freaking genius... I care not, what anyone says.. Sony screwed up getting rid of him, as I think it lost them consumer confidence......When people hear the father of Playstation, the sole orchestrator of it all, was shown the door....It doesn't look good.. I know it worried shit out of me in a way. And although they did well with there replacement for PS4 & thus it's success.
I believe Ken would have made PS4 really more original, really more Playstation... Now, we just have a less powerful pc.. He also MAY have added the chips into PS4, to enable FULL, uncompromised backwards compatability. Because he was a MASSIVE advocator of that..
In fact, I think it wasn't until he was canned, until they changed the whole b/c thing...I may be wrong on that.. Maybe he was still there...

I know, it was because whiny b1tches & crap, horribly biased gaming sites & publications constantly putting crap on Sony for PS3's expense, that was the sole reason for PS3's mutilation & subsequent NON b/c downgrade.
I know personally, being Australian, I happily paid a ridiculous nearly $1,000Au, for my SUPPOSED FULL B/C PS3... Only to find out, they'd butchered MY BELOVED MACHINE, by removing the emotion engine for PAL machines, & replacing it with bloody emulation software...

I will say, unlike MS's crappy b/c promises, my PS3 played EVERY PSone & PS2 game I put in it.. I did not find one, that didn't run on it.. & apparently only a handful didn't... I KNOW that MS's b/c promised will only last a short time..as MS are all about money, so there whole b/c is a sham, just a tool, to counter PS4's complete sales dominance.

MikeOxonfyre3888d ago

Thing is, I'm happy to keep my 360, PS3, & so on, to play old games....BUT, with so many NEW, AWESOME titles coming out so often on my 3 latest gen machines, I really won't be going back to play last gen, or older titles, I mean, I went back & finished a couple of PS2's greatest games, I hadn't finished (such as GOW2)... & I am playing a few PS3 & 360 titles ATM, as they are great games, I hadn't finished... but, I am playing more PS4 & XBone... & have even bought unfinished last gen games on new machines, such as GTA5, TLOU, etc, Borderlands, etc, etc... I'm even contemplating repurchases of Gears & Darksiders 2, for the better versions of TOP games.

Jesus, I digressed & ranted again. Back to point, only thing that matters for PS4's & Sony's ongoing success, is GAMES... And Sony DESPERATELY NEEDS to start rebuilding their inhouse studios.....& pumping out those brilliant genre defining masses of exclusives, that defined 2 gens of consoles... I mean, NO MORE Socoms (not made by Zipper anyway)... No more Wipeouts, no more Medievils, no more Warhawks, as even Lighthouse Interactive have buggered off to mobile devices, Insomniac are out making exclusives for MS, & such....All because Sony screwed ALL these teams over, with piss poor, little, to ZERO advertising & marketing... They axed some great developers, I mean, Zipper made 2 PS3 games, & some PSP & a PSVita title, in the time it took Team Ico, to DO NOTHING with Guardian, or whatever it's called... Seems stupid that a team that produced absolutely NOTHING in 7-8-9yrs, as opposed to teams that made some great games (I did love Socom's last outing, & MAG was not bad)... London Studios made the awesome Wipeout & Pulse for PS3, as well as a crap load of PSP & PSvita versions & upgrades.... Something is wrong at Sony, for doing this kind of crap.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8560d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele60d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla60d ago (Edited 60d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk59d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay59d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit59d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg59d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10159d ago (Edited 59d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14960d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle73d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker73d ago (Edited 73d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit73d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog73d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_73d ago (Edited 73d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog73d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad73d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_73d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage73d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda73d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
