60fps should definitely be standard on all games now with 1080p resolution

Just shows how underpowered these consoles are..

Dynasty20213856d ago (Edited 3856d ago )

I don't know why a comment like this gets downvoted.

It's the truth, end of story. If devs could get 60FPS @1080p, they would. If the hardware struggles, they cant. It's been almost 2 years and we're seeing no change - games still run like crap. 30 FPS in 2015 with the hardware available on the market is 100% unacceptable.

One could argue bad engine coding for the game, but nobody has been successful in a big AAA game to get 60FPS consistently without making sacrifices. And sports games dont count.

Console fans argued for a decade that 30 FPS was all that was needed, you cant see more than 30 FPS (that one always makes me laugh), and now are saying it's awesome. Hypocrisy at its' finest, but anyway.

They whine about PC players being graphics fanboys, but look at every article these days on any site - it boils down to PS4 fans debating resolution and frame rates.

I genuinely think that the graphically obsessed now reside in the console crowds.

PC players want bigger, better games because we KNOW, we KNOW, that PC games are capable of more if they weren't being hindered by multiplat requirements and console hardware.

More money in console gaming? Don't think so. Some PC versions out-sell console versions, PC hardware is better than ever in sales and growing, Nvidia and AMD have some truly insane deals out there encouraging change to better the CONSUMER through competition - something consoles don't do - and we're not plagued by ridiculous requirements like a yearly subscription to pay for a service that fails far too much in order to play online, nor are we burdened with the BS that is microtransactions in the vast majority of PC games.

That and PC has the most exclusives, officially more than the 360, PS3, PS4 and Xbox One combined if you spend 2 seconds looking it up.

Console owners always use exclusives as the reason to buy a console, but the fact is...they have way less than PC. "Better exclusives" is a point of view and completely contextual.

Oh and your list of exclusives includes extra missions or maps etc. Not worth bragging about, ever.

hello123856d ago

I have a PC and its for games that consoles would not be able to handle. Total war series would struggle to run on console the CPUs are just not good enough to handle hundreds of units. CPU is the big problem with the consoles this gen. Consoles could be sold at higher price with better hardware but then you'd have people complaining they can't afford the cost.

PC gamers don't see lot of the big AAAs we see on console. They have lot of games in the strategy and indie space. The shooter and sport space list is not that great on Steam.
DX11 API was the problem for PC. Next year you see big difference when the DX12 API is used for games.

Perjoss3856d ago

Its downvoted because it just doesn't make much sense, people need to understand that you can have a powerful machine or you can have an affordable machine but you cannot have both.

A powerful console with the ability to render high fidelity graphics @ 1080p 60fps would be really expensive to make, totally defeating the purpose of a home console as a cheap and hassle free alternative to a gaming PC.

fiveby93856d ago

@KNWS I have to generally agree with your observations. I own PC, X1, and PS4. PC is certainly the best from a performance perspective although it cost me much more money than the consoles even though I built it myself. On the flip side though often times PC games can be cheaper than console equivalent. PS4 is a really good console and it is my goto for console multiplats. X1 is okay. Not a bad device but not my preferred. I have spent almost no money on X1 titles to play outside of games with gold freebies. Just doesn't grab me. For example, if I play ROTR I will wait for it on PS4 next year.

UnHoly_One3856d ago

"If devs could get 60FPS @1080p, they would."

No they wouldn't. They would add more graphical effects, and make the game look better, and it would still be 30 fps and/or 900p.

madmonkey013856d ago (Edited 3856d ago )

devs could get 1080p 60fps no problem if thats what the decided to do, but they often sacrifice frame rate for graphical fidelty and features, outside of n4g, the average consumer, which is not your hardcode gamer, is going to be looking at how ground breaking a game looks, not how many frames per second it has.
i run my pc games at 1080p 60fps but have no problems running at a higher resolution for 30fps if it makes it look better

KwietStorm_BLM3856d ago

Well your argument is half right. A game running at 30fps doesn't mean it runs like crap or is unacceptable. And some PC games are set at 30fps by the developer. You obviously have the option to change this though.

TheCommentator3856d ago

Since the XB1 can technically output 4k they could run at 4k/120fps if they wanted, but the game would end up looking like an N64 game in most other regards. That's why the comment gets downvoted.

1080p/60fps is not always the best choice for devs (See: Battlefront, Halo 5, Uncharted 4)

Articuno763856d ago

It's downvoted because the idea that a set performance bar can be reached without compromise makes absolutely no sense.

That's not how hardware with a budget works. It doesn't matter if you triple the strength of a system: there are always compromises where something gives.

And this happens on all platforms regardless of how powerful they are as long as the hardware budget is set (which it is on consoles).

uth113856d ago

both boxes are capable of 60fps @ 1080p

But devs prioritize pushing visuals to the next level over having 60fps. All hardware (even the best PC) has limits of how many draws it can can do in 16ms (the limit needed for 60fps). If your visual detail pushes you over that limit you need to cut detail, FPS, or resolution.

I'd predict that even if the XB1 and PS4 had more power, many devs would use it to push visuals even further and still produce 30fps games.

JackStraw3856d ago

I remember how GTA5 and The Last of Us couldn't be done on last gen consoles because after 2 years of the consoles being on the market, developers just didn't have enough experience with the consoles to do it.

Oh wait...

You guys look stupid acting like you understand the power of a game console because you own a pre-built rig with overpowered specs that you do not even use to their full intent, seriously. It's just embarassing at this point.

Loadedklip3856d ago

I would think no matter how powerful a system is ... the developer might choose that extra power for even more graphic effects over framerate.

Remember ... there are some games that do run 60fps 1080p on ps3 but with simpler graphics.

dantesparda3853d ago

I agree with the problem of how long games take to install on X1. Halo 5 took me over 5 hrs to install. Started around 6pm and didn't end til 11 something. Unbelievable!

Thegamer413856d ago

Comments like this get downvoted because it's not true.
No matter how powerful consoles get, most developers will always aim for 30fps to improve visuals to the maximum the consoles allow (dependent on genre most of the time).

@suckingeggs

If all games were 1080/60 most gamers would get some form of motion sickness, some feature(s) would be sacrificed, and/or less games would be released. I'm glad 30 fps is standard so the majority can at least enjoy their game of choice with minimal impact.

Now the option of setting fps would be welcoming, and over time that might come into practice. Halo 5 comes to mind with the "we have 60 but had to sacrifice split screen."

SteamPowered3856d ago

Ive played 1080p/60fps exclusively for years and have never once got motion sickness from the fast framerate or glorious resolution.

garrettbobbyferguson3856d ago

"Motion sickness"

You don't get motion sickness from having a smoother experience with a better response time.

Tetsujin3856d ago

@garrett

I have from multiple games that went from 30 to 60 fps. When I played Uncharted 2 from the PS3 I was able to play it no problem. I played the Uncharted 2 demo for the PS4 and within 5 minutes I had to stop because I started to feel sick bad. I wasn't the only one either who experienced this, and I'm not just referring to a few people I talk to either.

Now a game like Gran Turismo I can play for hours with no issues however Uncharted remaster I might be able to play for an hour at max. Dying Light I couldn't play because of the same reasons. Fighting games I can also play without any serious issues. Borderlands Handsome Jack Collection I can't play either but I can play it on previous gen no problem. I've had people throw the argument "use motion sickness pills" yet those don't always work.

@steam

You're one of the lucky ones then. Of course everyone is different so one experience doesn't really match another.

As I mentioned earlier if there's an option to set filters issues like this would be minimal.

cd13856d ago (Edited 3856d ago )

@steampowered

Playing games at higher frame rates has never given me nausea either, saying that...

You have only played games at 1080/60 for years, really???

I've built a fair few gaming rigs in my time and found a fluctuation in frames (+/-, even by a little) pretty common place, even on the higher end builds but its nothing to worry about and hardly ever noticed it in the heat of the action.

I will assume your statement is untrue.

Raazayn3853d ago

Higher frame rate didn't get rid of split screen, it would be better to say that didn't want to compromise on both graphics and frame rate.

Split screen could have been possible but graphics would take a hit since you have to render the world several times depending on how many players

Though people happily gave up on their silky 60FPS games when 3D games became a thing in PS1 era where 3D games ran pretty much always at 30 (25 PAL).

60 became almost a standard on PS2 with quite a few games but that again almost went out of the window with PS3 games.

Im sure that when the first consoles capable of doing 2k or 4k are out, we will see a similar surge of 30 FPS games.

pivotplease3856d ago

Maybe next-gen will be all 60 FPS, but then people will complain that everything is still 1080P. I for one think 1080P is a great resolution and I would rather see improved textures/lighting/etc. than devs aiming for something far more inconsequential like 4K.

cyclindk3856d ago (Edited 3856d ago )

People forget, HDTV "happened" back in the PS3/360 era so all of a sudden the console hardware had to bring all sorts of visual flare along with a jump in resolution that had been essentially stuck at 480i on home televisions for years.

Any PC gamer will tell you, that bumping your resolution settings up and down drastically affects your performance. It can take a lot of juice. I remember that I never got to a point where I could run the original Crysis at max settings without any perceivable drop in frame rate. And it took years just to get to that point as I was never buying anything close to top-of-the-line hardware.

Tzuno3856d ago

Money money money, they want to make more money with cheaper hardware, well guess what there is a drawback and not for them :)

UKmilitia3856d ago

might be what many call "underpowered " but im enjoying the heck out of my ps4.

at end of day price is key.

do you want a really high end 1080p/ultra setting/60fps at prob £1000+ or an affordable console at £359

its good enough for what i want and i have really enjoyed this gen so far.
u cant build the same pc for price of todays consoles, specially the xb1 with 2 games for £250 like it is in UKat moment.

2pacalypsenow3856d ago

No one would pay 600+ for a game console

garrettbobbyferguson3856d ago

So the Playstation 3 didn't launch at 600 dollars? I should know, I have the original Phat model.

2pacalypsenow3856d ago

It did and it got ripped for it. Sony learned their lesson that's why Ps4 is cheaper and is selling the way it is.

ShaunCameron3856d ago

Not only that, but the PS3 didn't start turning in a profit until Sony "slimmed" it down.

OutcastMosquito3856d ago

You couldn't be more wrong. It's the devs that don't have the money and resources to constantly optimize their games. Don't forget, it takes a lot of money to even make the simplest of games.

ShottyGibs3856d ago

Totally agree. 30 fps should not be a thing.

Shuckylad3856d ago

Yep, 30fps is wank. End of.

DarXyde3856d ago

Underpowered doesn't imply less fun or intuitive. It may restrict possibilities, but I bought my consoles for fun first.

Now about "standard 1080p/60fps"... Not practical on fixed hardware. The consoles could be 3x as powerful as they are now, but still yield similar results. That is because developers are working with an unchanging specification. They know what performance they can get and will push it. If you had an open world game that was literally a replica of our world and fully rendered with voice acting and individual AI for everyone at all times, a game like that could not possibly be even 1080p/60fps on even the highest end PC. Games will be developed to take advantage of the platform and developers can at least be comfortable knowing all PS4s and Xbox Ones have a specific amount of power.

Now we can totally have all games running at the gold standard, but that will come with sacrifices. Since gamers place such a high value on graphics, guess where developers are keen on placing their priorities? MGSV is a bit of an aberration from that mindset where resolution and frame rate are on top and visuals are great for a cross gen title, but it's not perfect and the world is not as populated as other open world games.

In short, you can have the gold standard at the cost of visual fidelity. I don't mind either way. As long as it's got a great resolution, is at least 30fps, and above all fun, I can deal.

cyclindk3856d ago (Edited 3856d ago )

Every car should be able to hit 270 mph by now, how ridiculous of the auto industry...

This statement is as utterly ludicrous as your expectation (which I assume is taking into consideration the price-point of these consoles?)

Give it a break. At least TRY to make sense.

I'd love these consoles to have unlimited power too <insert Emperor joke and/or .gif here>, but it is just that, a wish, an unrealistic expectation at best.

I can take the most powerful gaming rig on the planet, feed it the most visually intensive game there is, watch it handle it on "maximum" settings with ease and then... make one modification to the code, allowing for 1 billion units or something on screen and the computer will die. ALL hardware has its limitations and that is without even considering PRICE!!!

You are getting it backward anyway... developers can make ALL of their games run at 60 fps 1080 p, they simply have to gimp all the other visual effects. It's easily done, but I like a balance of things if I don't have a choice one way or another.

Do be sane won't you?

SteamPowered3856d ago

The 270MPH analogy doesnt exactly work. Most people cant and shouldnt be driving that fast for safety reasons.
Nobody will be hurt by excessive frame rates...

holtzy3856d ago

the average consumer could care less about frame rate all they care about is if they like the game. all you people crying about frame rate sound like cry babies.

Apocalypze3856d ago

It depends what kind of game though, if its a story driven game it should be 30fps just like a cinematic movie. If its a competitive game then it should be 60fps.

christian hour3856d ago

I'll take quality and immersion over 60fps any day. If achieving 60fps means things like AI, Dynamic lighting/reflections, lossy audio, LOD, draw distance, beautiful imaginative aesthetics (tired of photorealism) are going to take a hit, I'd rather they leave it at 25-30fps, and let those things take a hit for things like Multiplayer, like its always been. If you can do all that and still hit 60fps, then that's always a nice bonus.

"but PS4 users will have to riskily take apart casing and internally install their own upgrades."

What!? Risky?! The panel slides off, risk free, you unscrew one screw and the HDD slides out trouble free. It was riskier doing it on PS3 but still incredibly feasible and accepted most SATA HDD's (unlike 360's overpriced custom HDD's).

In regards to day one patches, glitches in games aren't a new thing. I've had plenty of glitched experiences in games from nes, megadrive, snes, ps1, n64, and ps2 where I've had to restart games completely. I remember in the first Syphon Filter, in MP, my friends and I discovered if you grabbed on to the side of a hedge in a particular level and a grenade went off near you, you became invincible. They constantly did that and made the game not fun to play anymore for MP. (or was it Syphon Filter 2?)

If you don't know much about coding, then you'll have a hard time accepting this I suppose. But everyone codes in their own way, you could get a job as a programmer and be put in charge of updating something a previous programmer made, and it will look like a nightmare to you because they do things in their own particular way, adding something new in your own style could completely cripple the system, and so you either have to rewrite their code, or figure out how to code like them. You literally have to understand the way they think and operate.

The more programmers you add to the mix, the more chaotic these things become. The bigger your game, and the bigger your coding team is, the more insanity that is going to pour out from your game, especially when it gets in to the hands of 100,000's even milllions of players who will play the game in ways you could never predict!

A friend of mine recently passed on his game to me for testing, he'd fixed all the bugs, or so he thought. Withing two seconds I did something he would never have done himself and about 20 of his bugs reappeared in brand new ways.

http://blog.codinghorror.co... here's some reading to give you an understanding of the horrors of coding and how its become harder and more complex due to the insane amount of people working on projects these days.

3-4-53856d ago

PS4/XB1/Wii U aren't as powerful as everyone thought they were going to be.

Back in 2010 or 2011 some "insiders" told us that this gen would be a "Stop Gap": "a temporary way of dealing with a problem or satisfying a need."

* The entire industry was on the verge or a breakthrough in technology but needed to wait a few more years to get it cheap enough to use on consoles.

They needed something to hold us over until that happens.

The next consoles will wow us, starting with the NX.

We were told this and people still can't comprehend or reason it properly.

Captain_TomAN943856d ago

They are perfectly capable of 1080p 60FPS. Silly developers would just rather add an extra piece of dirt instead...

3856d ago
alfcrippinjr3856d ago

possible not under powered at all

more likely the games company have to follow a guide line
so not to destroy the pc sales of games

as there more pc games owner then consoles
if console did the 1080 which they can
people would not be buying pc games and be buying xbox one or ps4

Servbot413856d ago

Publishers only care about bullshots and graphics because they are the easiest to advertise, so they have development teams focus first and foremost on how pretty the game is. Sadly, stupid people just keep eating it up time and time again.

I will say, however, I'm perfectly fine with a lower resolution if it means 60 frames a second, as it actually affects gameplay, whereas resolution just makes it prettier.

PreAtaric3856d ago

"Just shows how underpowered these consoles are."

No it shows what dev priorities generally are. Any of these current consoles can hit 1080p and 60fps.

fitfox3856d ago (Edited 3856d ago )

i agree, 30 fps Vs 60 fps is liken to when Black and White films transitioned into color, but for some reason, The games industry is stalling with this.

_-EDMIX-_3856d ago

I see another gamer that has no clue about development.

You can't force developers to use 60fps or 1080p...both are developer dependent. They choose those settings. As you have no idea that with a more powerful system...if they wouldn't just use the extra power for more graphics and ignore the resolution or frame rate.

Many of you see to disregard that a game can be made with 60fps 1080p if merely put on a lessor engine used last gen.

There is a good reasons why you don't see many actually doing that... Pretty sure if they wanted that setting so badly, they wouldn't be making demanding engines.

One thing i really wish happened is physical disc being installed completely on the HDD which they are but then being able to play them without the disc.

i have a mix of both digital and physical and being able to switch between games is brilliant. yet i don't want to pay store prices when i can get the physical copies for £15-£20 cheaper.

Shame to install the whole game and not have that feature there, i would have been happy with serial keys or some kind of steam system on console.

3856d ago Replies(1)
TWB3856d ago

So, heavy DRM with severly hindered resale value?

I do agree that it would be cool if you could run games without the disc. I think some sort of a optional feature + online DRM (enabled only when you enable "no discs" feature) but they would be walking a thin line there. It would have to be perfect to be accepted by the gaming community.

alfcrippinjr3856d ago

drm is on the ps4

you download a paid game and you think good
i can play the game no problem

but what happens next the game will lock
if you dont go onto the psn store to get a updated licence.

it bullshit as not everyone has got high speed internet or infact internet at all.

digital downloads are protected with drm
on the ps4

MRMagoo1233856d ago

@alf

If you have no Internet you aren't downloading digital games anyway. If you have slow Internet you can update the license in seconds.

TWB3856d ago

@alfcrippinjr

So as I said, the disc-less (installing a game from disc and then not having to use the disc) would need some actual heavy duty DRM measures?

I know PS4 already has some DRM functionality but its not all too intrusive, not the very least when it comes to physical games.

3856d ago Replies(2)
Youngindy213856d ago

Yeah I am kinda sick of the long install times for games. Microsoft needs to fix that ASAP. When I pop a game in my system I want to play it right away or at least within 5 to 10 mins, not 15, 20, or 30 mins later.

3856d ago
MRMagoo1233856d ago

Hmmm on ps4 you pop the game in and start playing in a couple minutes while the updates download in the background and install. I would not like waiting up to 30 mins for a game to install

raggy-rocket3856d ago (Edited 3856d ago )

I don't get why everyone says every game should be able to do amazing visuals at 1080/60 now. Better hardware allows you to do the same visuals at higher fidleity, or better visuals at the same fidelity, and sometimes both. Do people realise better visuals with slightly increase fidelity is already a strain. I'd rather play Halo 5 at dynamic resolution 60fps than Halo 1 at 120fps 4k

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose23d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE23d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername22d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy23d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde22d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8622d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8622d ago (Edited 22d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.
