Is Microsoft Too Comfortable Being Second Best?

Microsoft is more humble and more nimble than Sony.

They stand no chance in catching up to the PS4. The PS4 just has the worldwide appeal that the Xbox one lacks. At the end of the day if they're selling better than what the 360 did at its time then that's more to be proud of. That seems to be the case since Sony is just killing it so much with the PS4.

solar3902d ago

The 360 Extremists said the same....years ago on this very site. And the PS3 caught the 360. It is still early in this console cycle. Anything can happen.

madmonkey013902d ago

the ps3 was outselling the xbox 360 from launch so it was inevitable,

BiggerBoss3902d ago

Like MadMonkey said, the Ps3 was steadily outselling the 360 from the start. The XB1 has to start outselling Ps4 before it can even start to close the gap.

Thatguy-3103902d ago

Xbox brand isn't big outside of US and some parts of Europe. Playstation is a worldwide brand.

dcbronco3902d ago

310 that can change. Its fine for Sony fans or people in general to have such a nonchalant attitude about the current console sales. Sony can't get arrogant and believe they have things wrapped up. Microsoft could add a unique feature that opens Xbox to a mainstream audience and things could change quickly. There's still three or four years left in this generation.

solar3902d ago

No, the PS3 didnt. All the information is there for you to find.

XisThatKid3902d ago (Edited 3902d ago )

This no where near the same as X360 to PS3 sales. For one 360 only sold approximately the same as the estimated gap between the current consoles now, almost 8 mil. That was without competition. Like they were the only ones on the market for a year and pulled in less than 10 mil which is the general standard console sales projection WITHOUT and immediate threats. Then the PS3 drops and sells 10+ mil in 1 year with direct competition from the already established 360 AND almost 200$ price disadvantage not only makes quota but also outsells its competitor in 1st year sales but almost every month month to month sales. For must of that gen that trend continues until finally closing that gap after 6-7 years and Sony called it. These are assumptions and estimations based on facts not fandom or blind brand loyalty.
In response to south comment above it is true that things can change but I just doubt that. Not only does X1 have to outsell PS4 in hundreds of thousands in short months but I doubt this gen will last as long in full stride like last gen. 5-7 years I say not 8-10 years(not including Sony's 10 year plan support). Looking at the situation 2 dimensionally it looks like PS3 and 360 reversed but look deeper and it's no where near the same. In terms of specs and release date it's as close and even as it's ever been in a gen but PS4 clearly out paces X1. My theory the same would have happened but not as drastic if PS3 and 360 launched a week from each other.
Don't get me wrong I wish the X1 success especially since that well keep Sony on their toes and hero them from getting as said above "arogant" and I want to get as much as I can out of PS4.
Two Olympians compete, one wins doesn't mean the loser is bad they're still above average performer.

2nd best in sales...1st in AAA games, content and value.

Which is more important to gamers? I'll take MS being 2nd in console sales while 1st in Games and value then to be 1st in console sales and 2nd in games and value.

Crashbandicoot773902d ago (Edited 3902d ago )

Matter of opinion and preference. I think PS4 has better games and are more diverse!

Omarja853902d ago

@ Crashbandicoot77

Most gamers think so too.

Major_Glitch3902d ago

@flex FACEPALM! Most console gamers ARE PlayStation gamers. Hence the higher number of sales in Sony's favor. Try to keep up please.
OT: MS has, is, and will continue to be second to Sony for one simple reason: Sony focuses on games, while the competition focuses on timed exclusivity deals and overhyping gimmicks.

this stuff has to stop now. but just for arguements sake what is the highest rated xbox one exclusive? not one above 90 on metacritic.

its all down to opinions as said above, but the reviewer opinions are that the ps4 games deserve higher rating. I dont pay much attention to review scores, but i agree that ps4 games are better in my opinion and they suit me more.

Software_Lover3902d ago

Metacritic............. again. :(

As a gamer, metacritic doesn't help me determine what games I like. I wish people would stop using it for their cause (either side)

Spotie3902d ago

Except NOT actually first in AAA games or games in general.

Gonna need an explanation for being first in content. Likewise with value.

3902d ago
The_BlackHeart__3902d ago

@lvl_headed_gmr

Games scored above 90 for each platform on Meta:

PS4: 11
WiU: 6
XB1: 3

PS4 actually beats both other platforms combined and XB1 is currently in last place.

Numbers > Opinions

The_BlackHeart__3902d ago

Forgot the link.

http://www.metacritic.com/b...

By the way, all 3 games scored over 90 in XB1 perform better on PS4. Its not an opinion, its a fact.

lelo2play3902d ago (Edited 3902d ago )

Just to point out how flawed your logic is... and Metacritic's.

Out of the top 10 games of the PS4 (all above 90), 6 of those games are available on the X1. So the X1 has to have forcibly at least 6 games above 90.
... and yet, they only have 4 games above 90 on metacritic.
http://www.metacritic.com/b...

Simple answer... a lot of X1 games don't have Metacritic reviews (or scores).

Hold_It3902d ago

@Blackheart

That logic is flawed because Metacritic's scores are opinions.

Microsoft should just keep doing what its doing. Support has been outstanding.

Software_Lover3902d ago

A Microsoft console will never outsell a playstation console. NEVER EVER EVER EVER.

Stop looking for it to and just enjoy the games and console.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio65d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing65d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9265d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit65d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing65d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9265d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn267d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers67d ago (Edited 67d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn266d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown67d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos67d ago (Edited 67d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay66d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay66d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac66d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger67d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300067d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde67d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood67d ago (Edited 67d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde66d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_66d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
