Assassin's Creed: Syndicate Looks Worse Than Unity - Lacks Cloud Shadows, Features Less Crowd

YouTube’s ‘Candyland’ has released a video, showing some of the graphical differences between Assassin’s Creed: Unity and Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate. Unity was criticized for its framerate issues and really high requirements and in order to improve things in Syndicate, Ubisoft decided to remove/reduce a number of effects.

Gamers:

"Unity runs at sub-20fps. Fix this shit!"

*Ubisoft makes necessary changes to ensure it doesn't happen again*

"This game looks worse than the last one! WTF!"

PC_603738d ago

PC version should look better when its out next month though so we have to wait and see.

GarrusVakarian3738d ago

PC version of Syndicate look better than the PC version of Unity? I highly doubt it if the console releases of those two games are anything to go by. Asset quality and geometry, NPC count, interior detail, and lighting have all been scaled down. And rightfully so imo. Ubisoft but off more than they could chew with Unity and the game ran like ass because of it.

TFJWM3738d ago

After playing Unity 3 days ago and Syndicate the last day and a half the graphics are much better in Syndicate...

Bansai3738d ago

I'd rather have worse looking game with better performance than a good looking slideshow.

abstractel3737d ago (Edited 3737d ago )

Unity on PC after a couple of patches was a masterpiece IMO. It was gorgeous, and I'm sad they had to scale it back instead of being able to optimize the code considering Unity was released only a year after current gen consoles. So I am a bit disappointed in Syndicate's graphics and lack of interiors. Also really liked Unity's story. But Evie and Frye (sp?) seem to be a great addition to both gameplay and story.

But two different teams created the games, so maybe next year's game will look much better again and have interiors.

One thing Unity missed that Syndicate has is full day cycle (night) which is really nice. I will wait for the PC version, but yes, it won't look as good as PC Unity.

bixxel3737d ago

Give it up. AC Syndicate doesn't deserve to be bought. The more AC games you buy, the more you support this horrible trend of bad games.

R6ex3737d ago

Those outdated shxtboxes can't handle the throngs of NPCs in Unity. I'm waiting to play Syndicate in its full glory on PC!

starchild3737d ago (Edited 3737d ago )

@bixxel

How about you not buy it if it doesn't appeal to you, but quit telling others what games they can like and should buy. I enjoyed playing Unity and Syndicate looks good to me too.

Unspoken3737d ago

Yes, Unity looked amazing on PC after the patch works. I was only able to max out 1440p and ~60 FPS as the engine is too powerful for low end hardware. They had to tone down the rendering capability of the engine in order to get stable frame rates under a set amount of vram, but this is the fruits of the labor.

I wouldn't worry about it so much and actually look at how the core gameplay elements have evolved.

I hate the gaming community sometimes...

Hoffmann3738d ago (Edited 3738d ago )

Sometimes, I doubt that some of the articles editors on a good couple of the gaming sites these days can really be described as a part of the gaming community.

From the so called "SJW's" that celebrate it every time when a female character in a video game is not sexy looking, to others that describe themselfes as a "Uncharted" veteran but is not able to discover that she played the remastered Uncharted 2 to guys like the ones that try to complain and make others complain about not important stuff in video games.

I mean, looks at the comments here that share the opinion that this article was not needed at all. THAT'S the gaming community.

Lord_Sloth3738d ago

Exactly. Nobody asks the only important question: is it fun?

babadivad3737d ago

Sometimes?? Most of the time.

Dynasty20213737d ago

I hate the hypocrisy of console owners is all.

I'll get downvoted, probably banned again for a few weeks, but you lot are such pathetic hypocrites.

For years, with countless evidence, you've sat there saying we don't more than 30 FPS blah blah blah.

Then Uncharted 4 comes along and they were "aiming" for 60 FPS (which didn't happen, shock horror), and you were all praising ND and how 60 FPS is amazing and proves the "power" of the PS4.

I'm sorry, you lot have been arguing against PC "elitists" for YEARS during the 360 and PS3 era that "anything more than 30 FPS isn't necessary" or "eyes cant see more than 30 FPS" and bollocks like that.

You call PC players elitist.

look in the mirror, all of you here on N4G.

Any PC-related news is largely swept under the rug.

Whenever someone talks about PC, you downvote it into oblivion.

We're elitists and only care about graphics? CHECK EVERY PS4 VS XBOX ONE ARTICLE AND SEE WHO REALLY ONLY CARES ABOUT GRAPHICS.

yomfweeee3738d ago

Taking a step backwards in graphics is pretty much unheard of for a series. Why couldn't they learn from their mistakes and fix the issues without sacrificing things.

morganfell3738d ago

The smaller crowds isn't necessarily a step back. There were several places in Unity where it was simply an oversized crowd for the sake of having an oversized crowd. Yes it was applicable in some of the locations where people were gathering to riot or demonstrate but many times it was just simply unrealistic.

yomfweeee3738d ago

I agree they probably overdid it with the population density.

But the other things are a step back if true: less shadows, less character detail, less buildings you can go into

GarrusVakarian3738d ago (Edited 3738d ago )

But they also included non-baked lighting and dynamic time of day and weather. I'll take things being scaled down for those things and a steadier framerate all day everyday.

Being better looking than the last game should never take priority over performance.

suli55953738d ago

i know right, people are never satisfied.... they seem to forget its not the french revolution hence THE SMALLER FFKKNNN CROWD PEOPLE!!!!!!

WellyUK3738d ago

Well considering London back then was the BIGGEST city in the world and the most populated then it kind of does matter, however it doesn't NEED the big crowds like Unity as the whole point of Unity was to show large crowds of people revolting where as it's not the same on Syndicate so the crowds are not needed. Syndicate does however have the Thames which has hundreds of ships going up and down it which Unity didn't have.

Overall Syndicate is a better game anyway which is all that matters.

skwidd3738d ago

Ugh.. I hate this..
Did people who complain about Unity play the game TODAY?? I've had NO issues with it. It runs at 30fps and drops to 24 on occasions. Big deal. I'd rather have a more immersive experience with more crowds, details, interiors and gorgeous lighting of Unity and compromise with a drop in frames (ON OCCASIONS) than having a "locked at 30". The frame drop never dropped to bother me AT ALL and I've put in over 40 hours into the game.

Unity does look better. I wish people would see what Unity is today rather than what they think it is based on how it was released.

ab5olut10n3738d ago

Exactly what I tell people. Bubs for you.

moomoo3193737d ago

ive been playing it for the first time this week on ps4 after installing all the patches and it really doesnt run that great. its definitely playable but fairly choppy. doesnt seem to not run at a steady 30 fps

starchild3737d ago

Well Unity ran just fine for me since the day it came out. Then again, I have a gsync monitor and decent PC specs and I'm sure it ran pretty badly for some people. I just think Unity got more negativity overall because of how demanding it was, regardless of how great it looked.

DiscoKid3738d ago

How dare they not have cloud shadows! -_-

Spenok3738d ago

Yep, that pretty much sums up the majority of vocal gamers these days. Zero logic and zero consistency.

Rivitur3738d ago

Your logic is flawed as with time technology is supposed to get better not worse.maybe if they don't rush this shit out they can have all those effects - the fps loss.

GarrusVakarian3738d ago

My logic is fine. I am Turian after all.

ITPython3738d ago

I have played all the AC games up until whatever on came out last year, ie paritygate. Still haven't played or bought it to this day, and will continue to not buy AC games until #PS4NoParity goes into effect.

GarrusVakarian3738d ago

But there is no parity this time. Syndicate runs considerably better on the PS4.

DrumBeat3738d ago

Right?

Obviously they had to scale some things back to fix the issues of Unity.

These stupid articles.

garrettbobbyferguson3737d ago

Are there only extremes? There is nothing in between? This is what I don't understand. You go from having outrageous amounts of braindead/glitch NPC crowds to absolutely nothing. When a game is running like crap for me, I don't turn down everything to zero. I turn off unnecessary options until it's running acceptably. And if it still isn't then I start messing with the primary graphical settings.

starchild3737d ago

Yeah, but Syndicate is a very nice looking game. It's not as if it is anything remotely equivalent to turning everything down to zero. In fact, some things look better in Syndicate, such as the foliage. It was completely flat in Unity, but in Syndicate it takes advantage of the physically based rendering and light reflects off it quite nicely.

endzeitkind3737d ago

its solved. runs at 22fps now.

GordonKnight3737d ago

Gamers:

Don't buy Ubisoft games at launch. This game will $20 next month.

Tdmd3738d ago

Still looks pretty good to me. Does it performs better than Unity? That's a much more important question.

IIFloodyII3738d ago (Edited 3738d ago )

So far it's been way better, PS4 version (don't know what the Xbox version is like) seems to hold at 30 almost all the time, the carriages being the only thing i've noticed hitting the frame rate, but even then it only drops to around the mid 20s for a sec and is back. Unity would drop to sub 20s in places on the PS4 and take a bit to recover.

skwidd3738d ago

Im sorry.. but after the patches it doesn't go below 20. Please provide evidence for your claim

IIFloodyII3738d ago

@skwidd

Hence why I "would", not "does", it happened if you ever went anywhere near the stained glass.

the_dark_one3738d ago

If going by DF analises, yes much better

starchild3737d ago

Unity always worked for me since day one.

Pintheshadows3737d ago

Well good for you. I can tell you now that you are in a minority of lucky people.

generationjeu3738d ago

Framerate and gameplay trumps graphics. When will people understand that simple truth?

Halo2ODST23737d ago

Gameplay>Framerate>graph ics>reolution

iNFAMOUZ13737d ago

uh no, i can play fine at 30fps ill take resolution anyday

Saijahn3738d ago

it still looks great and plays even better.

MasterCornholio3738d ago

What's most important is that overall its a better game than Unity was.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate - Play Now at 60 FPS on Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PS5 Pro

Revisit the Assassin fantasy and take down your enemies more smoothly than ever on Assassin's Creed Syndicate’s free 60 FPS patch.

AC Unity next Please! despite the technical issues it was a good game even though it was too ambitious for PS4 and Xbox One the graphics hold up well. I would love to see it on PS5 and Xbox Series Consoles

Chocoburger424d ago

YES, update Unity to 4K 60! I loved the French revolution setting, I even enjoyed playing CO-OP online, its too bad that they removed it from Syndicate, but the incredibly negative reaction from Unity (mostly because it was rushed out 4 - 6 months too soon), made Ubisoft think we didn't want the mode to come back.

dantesparda423d ago

Another vote for AC Unity!

jznrpg424d ago (Edited 424d ago )

Is Syndicate any good? I own them all since they end up in the bargain bin but I haven’t played one through since Black Flag

Rebel_Scum423d ago

Its one of the better one’s. Would make anyone’s top 7 AC game easily.

Ninver423d ago

That's not saying much. Most of the AC games after 2 are sub par in my opinion.

glennhkboy423d ago

Personally, this is a "Not Bad" grade. The gang warfare part is fun. You should give it a go since you already own it.

Gamingsince1981423d ago

The combat is fun, the setting is great and the characters are pretty good, I'd put it up just below black flag.

jznrpg423d ago (Edited 423d ago )

Thanks to those who replied, I’ll give it a go sometime

andy85424d ago

Give me a new trophy set 😂

Chocoburger424d ago (Edited 424d ago )

If you've read my comments here before, you know damn well that I'm always quick to mock Ubisoft, but in this case, its good news. Glad to see that Syndicate went from being almost broken on PS5 BC, to receiving a free 60 FPS update patch.

While this game did have grind elements, and skill trees, it wasn't exhaustively grindy like the later games would end up being. The London setting was amazing, too, and the soundtrack by Austin Wintory was fantastic. I really liked playing as a brother and sister duo as well.

It was a good game, and the last one in the series I truly enjoyed.

Why are the patch sizes so different between Xbox Series and PlayStation 5? Its a 35 GBs difference.

Patch notes:

Xbox (~31.8 GB)

Xbox Series X
4K resolution at 60 fps
Xbox Series S
1080p resolution at 60 fps

PlayStation (~0.75 GB)

PS5 and PS5 Pro
1080p resolution at 60 fps
4K resolution at 60 fps

Deeeeznuuuts423d ago

31GB more that is pretty substantial isn't it, strange

Chocoburger423d ago

The PS5 Pro patch was only 171 MBs, so its even smaller than Ubisoft's claim of 0.75 GB.

Some people hypothesized that the PlayStation exclusive content (Darwin and Dickens missions) would be coming to Xbox for the first time with the new patch, but it wasn't added. A patch this large is clearly redownloading the entire game all over again, the dev team made that choice for a reason, we just don't know what that reason is.

Do the NPCs still randomly levitate every now and then? Even years later I noticed they hadn't patched that out

Honestly I loved the PS4 ACs. I'd love next gen ports of Black Flag, Unity and Syndicate
