Anticlimactic and Disappointing Boss Battles

Jo from GamersFTW writes: 'Every game deserves a brilliant villain, there is often more than one, and you know in the end you are going to meet your arch nemesis and defeat them in a blaze of glory that will be remembered for generations to come. So it is always a little disappointing when you reach the games climax and they put up no challenge whatsoever or it simply doesn’t fit in with what has gone before. You start to question what you have just spent hours of your life on to be greeted with this pushover.'

Currently playing Metal Gear Solid so I had to quickly skip reading the part about Quiet =P At least I’ll be expecting disappointment now.

No spoilers ahead IMO(that you don't know aside from knowing you can expect disappointment)

There's a loophole they use to get through it, if you play it like you should it's not awful but it could have been so much more.

Really great list. Particularly agree with the quick time event bosses, they're just so unsatisfying that I tend to end up feeling overly frustrated - I want to kill them will cool combos and skills, not a finger tap!

alexgibson3863d ago

Decent read but I actually didn't think the Quiet battle was that bad..

TXIDarkAvenger3863d ago (Edited 3863d ago )

If you take the easy road as mentioned in the article, I could see why it would seem disappointing. Otherwise the battle is pretty much what I would expect, I mean she is a sniper so it seemed fitting IMO.

MrsNesbitt3863d ago

Fitting yes :) but The End battle was much better.

inmusicutrust3862d ago

It should have been a bit harder. I beat her the first go and I'm a pretty bad gamer to be honest. It should have been between that and the extreme version of the mission.

joedom3863d ago

I agree, QTEs have no place in a boss fight. The final boss in Shadow of Morder was so anitclimatic that it almost ruined the whole game for me.

MrsNesbitt3863d ago

QTE's infuriate me so much.

Pozzle3860d ago (Edited 3860d ago )

Amen. Final boss battles should effectively use the skills you've learned and the weapons you've collected throughout the game to create an amazing climax. I like feeling as though I've accomplished something that I couldn't have done at the start of the game. QTEs are not only lazy, but it makes the rest of the game feel pointless because you could have beaten the boss at the start without having to gain any new skills or weapons.

COD has to be my most disappointing...

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle20d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

If the choices won't matter, why bother? Bioware works so hard at giving meaningful choices but rarely if ever carrying out the impact of such choices to the end.

I don’t think I’ve ever quite experienced an unfinished game that was slapped together with duct tape and construction paper to be sold as a finished product, basically making you replay the same missions and include a story that clearly was missing so much of the plot, like I did with this game.

I’m actually shocked that it doesn’t get calls out for this more.

franwex82d ago

It did. But the gameplay loop is still pretty good.
