Why Episodic Gaming Kills Immersion

Play: "Many might see episodic gaming as the future, but in reality the long waits and lack of coherence kills the sense of immersion that makes videogames so great."

That's silly. A person can be immersed in a weekly TV show, or a movie series with sequels that are years apart, so why not an episodic game? Personally I was very immersed in Walking Dead Season One, which was the first episodic game I ever played.

Tv immerses you through ways that conflict with video game immersion. In tv you're mostly just sitting there watching things unfold. In gaming you have to constantly jump back and forth between watching cutscenes to learn the story and controlling the game and thinking tactically about how to get pass the current situation. Shifting mental paradigms tend to break immersion.

It could work in games but the gameplay itself has to be cinematic, not just the cutscenes. Heavy Rain is still the game that came the closest because there weren't many non controllable scenes in it.

The Walking Dead improved over Heavy Rain by making memorable characters a true mature storyline and great atmosphere.

This is why Binge watching it so popular.

You get way more into a series and don't have time to forget things so you are "into it" for a longer span of time that isn't broken up in segments.

I don't like episodic gaming. It's never enough.

The only time it would be enjoyable is after all have been released and you can play it with no break in between, but that defeats the purpose of episodic gaming and so it should at that point just have been a normal full game that people can play at one time in full.

Testfire3889d ago

Not everyone can get immersed in weekly shows. I for one find it hard to do. I like binge watching shows and typically wait till either the series is over or enough seasons are out so I can indulge myself. I'm barely watching Breaking Bad because of this.

On the topic if this game and furthermore the growing trend of episodic games, I'm against it. Not saying I don't buy it, but I'll wait until all episodes are out. The last thing I want to do is get vested in an episodic game and learn that company went bust, or wait weeks/months till the next episode.

dumahim3889d ago

That works with TV because there's usually a bunch of episodes every week for a while.

You know what kills it? Large breaks in the middle of the season.

If the time between episodes wasn't so damn long, I'd be fine with it. But when you're waiting months between episodes, there's no point. I'll wait until the whole thing is done then buy all the episodes at once.

s45gr323889d ago

I got used to it with anime which is one new episode per week. I am talking about crunchyroll. I agree waiting for months for the next episode is excruciating but is getting better, for example life is. strange.

I would rather just play the entire game. I see episodic games as a way for Telltale etc. to make more money. Minecraft: SM was abysmmal. I kept waiting to break away from the story and build things, but it never happened. Most people are so busy that they don't have time for weekly TV shows hence Netflix.

dumahim3889d ago

You expected a game called Minecraft STORY MODE to break away from the story?

Lighter93889d ago

I expected some Minecraft in a game called Minecraft: Story Mode.

s45gr323889d ago

Yay Netflix. No episodic gaming is about the story, characters, atmosphere , and making psychological decisions. If you want to explore, blow stuff up, or break the game apart, then no episodic gaming is not for you. I am a film nut, I love a good story and 10/10 episodic games bring the best stories in gaming. These are not perfect games, these 🎮 are flawed when it comes to gameplay and sometimes visuals. Its the story that carries these games into engaging gaming experiences

Kane223889d ago

i have no issues with episodic content. its just waiting for months for each episode is my problem..

Ziege_UK3889d ago

I usually wait until the game has at least four of five parts out for download, that way once i work my way through it i don't have long to wait for the conclusion. It is nice to get a game earlier as you don't have to wait for them to finish the full thing but waiting months between episodes is a lot different to waiting a week for your favourite TV show.

elarcadia3889d ago

I actually had never thought about the effect episodic gaming could have on immersion because I always seem to wait until the full season is released before I start playing. However, I don't see how it is any different (or less immersive) than a book series. I will start a book series and fianlly finish it 4 years later (reading the books as they are released) and every time I pick up a new book I will still find myself as immersed in the world as I was before, if not more immersed.

Lighter93889d ago

But what if they released the book by chapters? A new chapter every few months. That's more similar to episodic games, at least Minecraft Story Mode, because the episode only lasted about 30 minutes.

elarcadia3889d ago

I've only played longer ones, such as King's Quest, but that would definietly be frustrating. I prefer to play the game when the full season has been released. I couldn't even imagined playing Until Dawn in episodes...that would have been a real buzz killer haha.

Testfire3889d ago (Edited 3889d ago )

@lighter9, lol my favorite book series of all time is the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. The first of 8 books was released in 1982, the last in 2012. Imagine waiting 30 years for a story to finish. Luckily I discovered the series at the time the last book was released.

What’s the best Game of Thrones video game?

Over the past decade, Game of Thrones has become a bonafide powerhouse in the realms of television and fantasy literature. However, despite its massive pop culture presence, there’s one entertainment avenue in which George R.R. Martin’s politically charged fantasy drama has mostly floundered: video games.

I personally loved the Telltale GoT. Probably one of the few where your choice actually matters. Iron from ice!

lucian2292583d ago

One of my favorite telltale games. Loved the story

Manubiggs2583d ago

I loved it too, my favorite tell tale game. Always wishes there would be a sequel

Hatsu122584d ago

The one that's not written by D&D

pietro12122583d ago

What does that even mean? Sounds like you don't know what D&D is?

TekoIie2583d ago (Edited 2583d ago )

D&D is used as an abbreviation for the main writers of the show (David Benioff and D. B. Weiss) because it's a hell of a lot shorter. So it's not a 'what' it's a 'who' and to be honest he's right. These guys have shown a complete disregard for the material with their recent attempt to rush it to completion to move on to their Star Wars work. These guys showed talent in adapting but don't have an original bone in their body based on their work beforehand.

pietro12122583d ago

In that case I agree and I apologize for coming off as an A hole. Dungeons and Dragons kept popping in my head every time I read D&D. Lol

porkChop2584d ago

I mean we only have the Telltale game, the 2012 RPG, and some mobile games to choose from. So probably Telltale? Even though I personally thought it was one of Telltale's worst products.

The Walking Dead: The Final Season’s Player Base Down 80% Compared to Peak in 2013

GitHyp: "While the expensive licensed properties made it easy for their games to garner attention on popular gaming news sites, we were always shocked with how few gamers actually played Telltale’s games… especially when analyzing their player counts and comparing to Steam’s most played games."

DragonbornZ2817d ago (Edited 2817d ago )

As hard as it was, I planned on waiting to buy it till all the episodes were out.
Probably should've just bought the season and waited.

Tross2817d ago (Edited 2817d ago )

Except, that's up in the air, and has even been delisted from digital storefronts. I hope it does get completed, but be thankful you don't have to wait and hope you will get what you paid for, as some gamers clearly do. If I had to guess, I think Telltale will find someone to help finish the last season, but it's not a certainty.

letsa_go2817d ago

Their games looked like low budget indie titles. Why did they have such a huge staff? No wonder they went bankrupt. Sounds like mismanagement!

subtenko2817d ago

*plays trendy music and gets on horse saddle* Because we here at telltale games have the best games like exciting walking dead, this is the future, everybodys doing it! give us youre money :D

lodossrage2817d ago

Can't say this for certain. But my theory is that word has gotten around that the series may not get finished. That in itself will drive people away

Rachel_Alucard2817d ago

No, everything they released past season 1 did nowhere near those same numbers. Season 2 did ok but sold only a quarter of what season 1 did. Their games have all been financial failures outside of Season 1 and minecraft.

diesoft2817d ago

I always enjoyed these games but I just don't rush out and get everything brand new. I don't have the money and I have a huge backlog as it is, so it's a shame it had to go down like that. Sadly, if management was that inept that they couldn't make a successful studio stay in business then they never had a chance. I can't imagine how infuriated I'd be if I poured the extreme hours the talented programmers, artists, etc., put into their games and just get dropped one day out of the blue, like, "Sorry, we sucked at business. Bye!"

wheatley2817d ago

Stop making the same game then. Oh wait...
