Why Don't We Finish Games?

Ashley from GamersFTW writes: As gamers I think that we can all agree that there is at least one game that we’ve always planned to finish but never got round to it. Personally, the backlog of games I’ve accrued over the years is a repercussion of the “I’ll finish it when I have nothing else to play” mentality completely failing me. This got me thinking – why do we leave so many games unfinished and what could we do to get back into a game?

I think becoming over powerful is a real issue, it becomes a little easy if you are so many levels above all your enemies. On the flip side, not becoming powerful enough and not having enough opportunities in a game to level up make me not want to carry on. Either that or I have to admit that maybe the game I'm playing isn't actually that good!

Yukes3876d ago

Absolutely agree - it's a difficult balance for developers to strike. If the driving force of progression cannot be sustained it puts pressure on the other mechanics to keep the player's attention through to the "end" of the story.

And there's a whole different argument to be had about when is a game actually "finished" as well!

OhMyGandhi3876d ago

Maple, you nailed it right on the head.

the problem is, when a game leans too heavily on empowering their players with, well more and more powers, it HAS to be MEAN something, especially within the context of the game.

So many developers have a tendency to make a base character without many moves interesting enough and already well equipped for nearly every confrontation within the game.

A game like Second Son, as shown in the thumbnail, weirdly fumbled with this idea, even when the very first Infamous did it so well. It bothered me because Sucker Punch found contrived ways of forcing the player to use the "new" powers in a way that feels entirely unnatural to the flow of the gameplay, overriding any player agency in the process. Delson becomes damned powerful too quickly, almost as if Sucker Punch was terrified of losing the player if they didn't show off the cool particle effects and such...That's when a good story kicks in, and a relevance to the character and their situation becomes paramount. Motivation is everything.

I had that with The Witcher 3, I adored the game, tried to do every single side quest there was before continuing with the main story, but I ended up being too high a level for the main story. I stopped doing side quests and finished the main story, then tried to continue the side quests in the Skellige area but I was still too OP and they got boring (especially since there were way too many smuggler's caches) and didn't finish all side quests...

And this is not the only game this happened with.

I also am a firm believer in "cult of the new", when a new games falls on the mat 'cos I pre-ordered it, it's pulling at me and interest in the game I wasn't finished with yet, wanes...

Add in a huge backlog on PS3, PS4 and Vita and games really need to keep me engaged fully otherwise I grab another!

I bought Witcher 3 but didn't get far at all yet. Is the game a lot more balanced if I start on a high difficulty? I don't want it to get easy and boring.

Because life. life and work and everything else that gets in the way like girlfriends and unnecessary crap.

But in all seriousness my problem tends to come when i actually finish campaigns, i then have to carry on playing to try and get a platinum trophy.

I tortured myself with GTAV to get the platinum, getting to level 100 was the biggest drag ever, and for what...

I finished metal gear and have an urge to carry on to get s ranks and get that % on the menu screen to say 100. but why, ive finished the story. which then leads to back logs of other games piling up.

Wish i was back at school / college.

smashman983876d ago

This here and its such a hard habit to break. I constantly find myself loading up my trophy list in the middle of a game instead of just playing through and enjoying it and I wish I didnt but damn if that platnium isnt the most addicting thing ever

Get_A_Job_Foxtrot3876d ago

Strange. I'm exactly opposite. I couldn't care less about trophies. Many are overratrd and can be figured by watching a youtube video.

Growing into adult life and not having the time to go through multiple hours of a games story (because there's apparently more important stuff to do?!). Open World/RPGs are the worst for this </3

Don't grow old folks, it's a trap! :(

TLG19913876d ago

exactly, that's what's scaring me about this gen, all i ever wanted was great RPGs and open worlds. now every game is exactly that and now all i want is some nice linear railed games i can be fed a nice short story to instead of 100s of hours.

Yukes3876d ago

Now we have exactly what we'd hoped for in youth, we find ourselves longing for more titles like Vanquish! Blast through in 6 hours - short and sweet.

nX3876d ago

I grew old too but I'm still playing mostly open world RPG's like Skyrim, The Witcher, Fallout or the Souls series. Time is definitely a huge issue but I don't have a problem with requiring 3 weeks to finish a game. That's still a better gaming experience than bothering with a short game I don't really enjoy.

1noobgamer3876d ago

For me its simple a case of out of site out of mind. A new game comes out and I play that one instead.

Neonridr3876d ago

Definitely agree that when a new game comes out, especially one I have been waiting for, my mind sort of switches gears and I lose focus.

I have actually stopped playing some of the brand new games I have bought in order to actually go back and finish some of my backlogged games. Alien Isolation and The Evil Within were two examples that went by the wayside. Happy I went back and finished them up.

cyphertech3876d ago

Those 2 are exactly the games Ive been trying to get into forever. I love horror games but I dont have the time to wait for alien isolation to pick up. It has to be the games because i logged over 100 hours into mgs5 within the first week and a half of its release.

Neonridr3876d ago

not gonna lie, Alien Isolation takes forever to beat. Game is like 15+ hours or so. The chapters just keep going on and on. It is still a good game, but it definitely loses its appeal after a while.
