How Do You Solve a Problem Like Star Citizen?

OnlySP: It has been a challenging few weeks and months for Cloud Imperium Games and Chris Roberts, who are currently developing Star Citizen – the most backed crowdfunded game to date (currently $90 million and counting).

This is not going to be an editorial that tears into the recent Escapist-Star Citizen battle royale; for that you can use Google and find plenty of other examples of it; this is a good one. This editorial will instead examine unrealistic expectations both from games at large and Kickstarted games in particular.

Hope we get a full release next year. Seems like they are pretty close since they have showed off an all star cast of actors and actresses.

Mega243863d ago (Edited 3863d ago )

Game hasn't even been in development for 3 years, a release next year would be suicide. Considering the scope and magnitude of it.

TacticAce3863d ago (Edited 3863d ago )

People need to understand that the singleplayer campaign will be "done" next year, not the persistent universe. The persistent universe Like an mmo will never be "done" because it will have updates and additions for the years to come.

someOnecalled3863d ago (Edited 3863d ago )

What he says is still true we should let them finish the game its funny cause I don't remember people rushing other devs to finish a game. We all know the reason why this game is getting so much hate and that's because he said he don't want it on consoles.

Squadron 42 is going to be released in Q1 of 2016. Earlier this year they had planned on Q4 2015 but they had issues with the transitioning between a ships local physics environment (walking around inside) and getting into a turret that's in the larger space physics environment. They also wanted to make sure that players inside a ships physics environment are suseptable to weapons fired from enemy ships even thought they're located in two different yet integrated physics environments. It's never been done before, like many things in Star Citizen. I'm still amazed they were able to pull off walking around inside a multi-crew ship while the ship itself is in the middle of a space battle.

Squadron 42 had the last of the Motion-Capture and studio recording finished in may-june and has been in QA since July. Most issues that could be seen in the CitizenCon last weekend were largely streaming glitches since it was happening in the UK as well as poor stream quality.

Here is a MUCH better example that was shown this past weekend. Another multi-Crew gameplay demo that was played live at CitizenCon.

Expect a lot of features by next year, but not the full release.

However, due to the sheer scale and complexity of the systems they've built out, I suspect whatever they put out will give lots of complex gameplay.

Godmars2903863d ago

Not involve players of the game to the degree they have been. Though that's a bit late.

_-EDMIX-_3863d ago

They very much have to, its a crowd funded game and their transparency is only fair. They still need to market it to get funded to continue working.

Godmars2903863d ago

Yeah, sorry, but if a game like this was too ambitious for regular methods of funding, Roberts somehow lacked the cred to get done what many publishers today wont commit a quarter the effort to, then exploiting what amounts to cult mentality, turning many gamers into battered wives, and still not delivering - THEN YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE IT!

Given how long since the last Wing Commander, the man should have returned with a clone of that as just a plain MMO, and built up from there from the hopefully resultant profits. Not try to do it all from the beginning.

_-EDMIX-_3863d ago

I mean...you do know what most publishers wouldn't make a high end elite PC exclusive right?

It has nothing to do with helping gamers, it has everything to do with helping theselves. I personally would never fund such a title if I was a publisher due to such little returns on a PC exclusive on a very small install base of elite PCs.

But that has nothing to do with design, they are not backing it because they can't make it on 5 platforms, strip features to make it extremely simplistic and make it in a 3 year window.

CIG doesn't want that. The want a PC exclusive, realistic, complex...high specs.

Does that sound like EA or Ubisofts wet dream? lol

From what I've seen and played myself, its 100% delivering all on fronts they promised its backers.

The FPS works, the flying works, the ships, mother ships etc all work the way they promised. They still need a few more things done but the concept of what they are pushing...lots of it has been already played and it works, putting them together shouldn't be a big issue compared to its massive assets.

@Godmars290
Thank god not a lot of you in this world.

Godmars2903863d ago

You mean people who don't like being jerked around, intentionally or otherwise?

I give Roberts passion for his work, even given that he worked on the Wing Commander movie whose effects where under par of many FMV he did, but he still needed to be aware of him limitations. Especially because of the example.

AndrewLB3863d ago (Edited 3863d ago )

Why don't you try it out yourself?

The end result will have to feel like a $92 million dollar game.

Godmars2903863d ago

How much does your average AAA title cost to make?

Neixus3863d ago

More than $90 million at least.

BiggerBoss3863d ago

@neixus

MGS5 was $80 million and id say it was probably more expensive than your average AAA game

thorstein3863d ago (Edited 3863d ago )

Actual costs are somewhat silly to try to pin down because it isn't like it is a film that is shot on location and all the costs are accounted for in one production.

Games entail all sorts of things but the coders are usually salaried employees much in the way those working on a movie are, however, they may work on this and then be on to another project making the actual numbers a bit harder to pin down.

For instance, the narrative director is going to be part and parcel of the game throughout production. His writing team, though engaged initially won't need to work on the project through the alpha and beta stages unless there are a few needed tweeks for the storyline.

They will have moved on to the studios other work.

Enigma_20993863d ago

Tell you what... whatever isn't used to make the game, tell them to give it back.

"I cannot sit here and tell you that Star Citizen will be great, or terrible, or somewhere in between because the truth is I don’t know. "

Hmm....if only the gaming press could learn something here....

Sure....since they raised close to a billion they don't even need to make a profit.

blacktiger31d ago

Well You know GTA 6 is like 2 billion dollar. So I don tknow why you trippin

jznrpg31d ago

But it’s not funded by players for over 13 years. And it will release before Star Citizen

blacktiger31d ago

what difference does it make, it's being funded while you are pissed off, money is money. Why do you have emotion?

Pergele31d ago

Did you know you are so stupid? Like it's almost funny

Azurite31d ago

The money is allocated between two games, most of it goes to Squadron 42.

peppeaccardo31d ago

Feels like when at the mall people stop you to give you free products and once you accept they won't stop to follow you until you buy the rest ..... F-DAT !

Noskypeno31d ago

What, you don't want shoe cleaner that costs more than the shoe?

raWfodog31d ago

I do wish they'd release this for PS5 Pro at the very least. I've been craving a good realistic space exploration game since Frontier Developments stopped supporting ongoing updates for Elite Dangerous on consoles. I put a ton of hours into that game and then they just stopped console support when the Odyssey update came out. Pissed me off LOL. I guess I'll get back into No Man's Sky for the time being since there's a bunch of new stuff since I've last played.

andy8531d ago

I didn't even realise you had to pay. Who on earth is paying to play a game that is still in alpha over a decade on 😂

thorstein31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

"A decade?"

This started before No Man's Sky was announced.

2011. It's been a decade and a half.

Shameless plug for NMS: you can build all of Star Citizens' ships in NMS for free. The only difference is that one of these games has launched...a decade ago. And the new update allows you toto capture creatures and battle them in an arena.

Knightofelemia31d ago

It's still a giant money sucker fools and their money are soon parted.
