Phil Spencer, Microsoft, talks about backward compatibility, Kinect and future Xbox

GamesBeat:
Microsoft has already done some magical work to get Xbox 360 games running on its Xbox One system, but now the company wants to bring those classics to another one of its primary platforms.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer said that he wants to play Xbox 360 games on PC. In an interview with Gizmodo Brazil, Microsoft’s gaming chief talked more about what he wants his team to possibly work on in the future. One of those things includes enabling people to play games built for the company’s last console on Windows 10. After building the 360 emulator for Xbox One, this probably wouldn’t require a ton of tinkering, but Spencer noted that it’s not something he has engineers actively working on.

Phil Spencer looks like he likes Mario and Mario Kart. Interesting the part of the interview about Nintendo.

DragonDDark3750d ago

Why are you getting dislikes? lol

PhucSeeker3750d ago

They're disagrees, not dislikes. 2 different beasts.

DragonDDark3750d ago (Edited 3750d ago )

Its technically the same thing.. I dislike technically means i don't agree.
I mean, how can you like something while agreeing to it?

smashman983750d ago

I disagree with my brother all the time but i like him

Jmanzare3749d ago

ok...but you can like someone and still disagree with them.. its the same shit disagree or dislike. you cannot like something you disagree with. or youre just a weirdo

Lol. Who wouldn't? Nintendo makes some amazing games. Smash bros and splatoon on Wiiu are super fun and I still play luigis mansion, wind waker and starfox adventures on my brothers gamecube.

MannGamer3750d ago

Mario Kart series is the most fun I have ever had playing a video game. With the screen split in four and all of us going "lmao" at the beginning of the race, going "lmao" even harder during the race, then another crazy round of "lmao" at the end of the race.

Tzuno3750d ago

At the end of the day games are what counts the most and if MS fails to recognize this and continue with more bullshit outside gaming they will struggle to convince customers, games games, games.

Gazondaily3750d ago

Well what do you think MS has been doing for the past few years? Their gaming focus is super strong now so what are you guys moving the goalposts to now?

PS now? are you joking? a service that costs £12.99 per month and has issues due to streaming ie poor frames, stuttering and downgraded visuals? not to mention if my interned happens to go down in mid game on ps now thats it game over.

xbox BC uses the actual hardware and xbox 360 games can be played offline oh and they look as good and run as well with no issues like they did on the 360.

vallencer3750d ago (Edited 3750d ago )

In some instances they run better! Mass effect loaded faster and has no frame popins.

vallencer3750d ago

But you have to pay for that. They aren't even remotely the same.

They are integrating everything into one platform (PC-like experience), that says it all. There is no longer a regular Xbox console, games are installed from Steam etc. on the next console/PC hybrid [if desired].

shinXseijuro83d ago

If the rog costs over 1000k with the tax and shipping included to Canadian consumers , what will the hybrid Xbox / pc cost ? If I were to go fully pc next gen I wouldn’t want to be locked behind an ecosystem after putting over 1000k out for the console/pc/hybrid . It’s already off to a bad start

shadowfax3382d ago

the screen itself was key factor for Xbox ally x final retail price..the console wont have it.

but even if it did cost 1000$, if it can play new PC games in high settings then price is kinda justified.

Eonjay83d ago

If it cost that much if better be upgradable otherwise it won't have the biggest advantages of either PC (upgradeability) or console (price/performance).

DarXyde83d ago

And this is the point I don't think Microsoft understands. Investing in their ecosystem after 2025 doesn't make sense to me. People playing on console are going to look at this price and scoff. It is probably also too late to make an ultra-powerful console: visual fidelity and frame rates are really in a good spot right now. With next generation platforms, no one should really be expecting anything astronomical. That will take serious power and the hardware to do that is simply not practical, especially in this economy with this US president.

Launching this thing has exclusively one benefit: You can play PlayStation and PC-exclusive games on Xbox (assuming it really does allow for Steam). But even then, why would any spend this much on static hardware?

I don't get this direction at all. Maybe they really do have pressure to get that 30% profit margin. If that's the case, I wouldn't count on them cutting down the price of hardware and selling it at a steep loss by allowing games on other platforms. But hey, they're the trillion-dollar company, so I might be just be talking about something I don't understand.

gold_drake82d ago

love how confident they are in their absolute idiocy

dveio82d ago

A console primarily is a choice by budget. And people have

• different budgets and
• only even want to spend different budgets

I think it's a bad business choice them leaving the console business.

And in turn a good business choice from Sony to keep building a classic home console with PS6. (Which I highly doubt won't even exceed nor even touch PS5 Pro's release price.)

When they bought Zenimax and ActivisionBlizzardKing, they should have upped their Xbox support program to 100bn and spend the rest of it for building studios & creating new games, giving their developers freedom & full creative control.

But they hit the roof at 75bn. This was it.

And then went to maximize profits by 30% starting Fall 2023, according to Bloomberg, and put their bets only on "Call of Duty in Gamepass will do".

I can already picture their next premium Xbox failing at a 90:10 chance.

Dark-soul82d ago

Not budged, if i want i can buy pc for 10k , but i prefer consoles, because games are better optimized on consoles and more cozy to sit in couch and play on huge 2 meter tv and have dolby atmos setup + ps5 controller is cool + nostalgia = i will always play on consoles

dveio82d ago

"Not budged, if i want i can buy pc for 10k“

Yeah. That's my second point above, like "or only even want to spend a specific budget".

But console gaming, no matter the direction of people's reasons, is a budget choice.

There's been a market for "a gaming box cheaper than a top gaming PC" for almost 40 years now.

And it will continue to exist.

Miraak82 82d ago

Optimized doesn't really mean better or the best version or experience you can have though . I'm ready to get into PC gaming again soon as I really don't want to play most new games on my base PS5, having to choose between gfx and performance is such a drag as choosing either/or is a hindered experience and I've felt it for some time now . I could waste money on a Pro or timegate myself till the ps6 comes out but I think I'm gonna step into the future now.

I'm like the complete opposite of you as my console setup is like a PC setup with a 27 monitor , gamer chair , big desk , headset and even have a KB hooked up to my ps5 .it's so hard to play competitive and mmo games on a big screen lol.

jwillj2k482d ago

Console gaming is absolutely not just a budget choice. We want the exclusive games, better experience and to support the brands we like. Budgets do come into the picture but this is the same for every industry, including PC’s. This is why “budget gaming pc’s” with similar prices never sell like ps/nintendo.

Jin_Sakai82d ago

Another Xbox console will be DOA. Just stick to making games and leave the hardware behind. Xbox is over.

Phil Spencer says 'nurturing and protecting creative teams that want to take risks' is the priority

The Microsoft Gaming CEO spoke about his priorities at a media industry event, but contradictions haunt the company's grand strategy.

italiangamer84d ago

He looks like a zombie in this photo, just like EX-box.

lodossrage84d ago

Yeah, they definitely caught him at a bad moment in that photo for sure. Kinda messed up they used that lol

peppeaccardo83d ago

In Italy we have Matteo Salvini a politician who speaks through his anus .... These two could be brothers from different mothers !!

medman83d ago

All the lies he tells are eating him like a cancer...from the inside out.

peppeaccardo83d ago

He is a board's members pleaser, neither a gamer .... he is indeed a disgrace for the industry we love.

Profchaos82d ago (Edited 82d ago )

Chowing down on the ozempic does this. It's not natural hard earned weight loss that zombie look always comes from it

where was the protection for the creative teams behind perfect dark and ever wild? They were taking risks... it was the heads of MS that pushed for a 30% profit margin which resulted in the closure and cancellation of various projects. He can't protect them from the people above his pay grade... that was their call and he had to go from good guy Phil to bad guy Phil. I really hate the higher up as MS, they need to back the F off the XB division and let them cook like Sony did for PS division.

Redgrave83d ago

Don't forget Scalebound, and the comments that followed how it "wasn't a good fit" which is in direct contrast to this statement here.

Chevalier83d ago

Man I was looking forward to Everwild and bought my Xbox One to play Scalebound. Lol

ZwVw82d ago

Not to mention the protection when he had The Coalition's new ip Shangheist/Project Ranger canceled in favor of churning out more Gears installments.

The guy's a walking contradiction. Now, Ed Fries, that's a guy who was genuinely about innovation and creative gaming development.

isarai84d ago

Didn't they just shut down the initiative and cancel perfect dark? 🤔

Lightning7784d ago

Oh the contradictory statements every single time with this guy. Why does he attend these events if everything he says holds no weight or not true or never happens. He Doesn't speak on behalf Xbox like he thinks he does because will always I repeat, always do the opposite. Because MS doesn't care about creating just money and BS.

Eonjay83d ago

Did you see they came out with a c*m stain looking blob called Mico? The people running the shop over there are high and wild.

medman83d ago (Edited 83d ago )

Hey, you leave Mico out of this!!!! Stains need to eat too!!!

What these games need are remasters and to modern platforms. They're all unfortunately stuck on the 360.

MrBaskerville107d ago

They are available on series x as well. But would be nice to get them out even wider.

babadivad107d ago

You can play them on console. I have them loaded on my machine.

MrNinosan107d ago

Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon and FFXIII Trilogy is actually the only reason I still have my Series X.

Terry_B108d ago

Hey Phil..Why didn't remasters and pc ports happen many years ago already?

ABizzel1107d ago

Because Phil and team seem to enjoy going to websites and forums to see what fans are discussing and wanting, to earn good faith points with post like this while they continue to offer the bare minimum.

TheEroica107d ago (Edited 107d ago )

Remastered and remake games are lame... A gigantic "we don't know how to evolve original thoughts" from dev teams cashing in on old ip.... Make new stuff or gtfo.

neutralgamer1992106d ago (Edited 106d ago )

no remasters and remakes provide those games to new audiences and improve the look/gameplay

Michiel1989107d ago

you can't revive what never lived

-Foxtrot108d ago

Then…remaster / remake them

🤷🏻‍♂️

After renewed interest you can get Mistwalker to do a sequel to Lost Odyssey

jambola107d ago

Poor Microsoft could never scrape together funds to make that happen

babadivad107d ago

Is Mistwalker still a studio?
