Nvidia Shield Android TV review

Digital Foundry:
Overall, Nvidia, Apple and Amazon have a clear strategy here. They want to revolutionise the way we interact with television, and they want to provide 'capable enough' games machines that appeal to the mainstream too. Nvidia is going one step further - it's looking to attract core gamers on top of that with its Shield platform and GeForce functionality. But without all of the required media options properly in place and completely integrated into the highly promising interface, what we're left with is an enthusiasts' machine where only the core can really put the excellent hardware through its paces.

Haha what a joke. They advertise it as being twice as strong as a 360 like that is impressive.

Sure the PS3 is weaker, but it can:
-Play Bluerays
-Has 10x the storage
-Actually has good games - and an insane amount of them

BlackPanther3871d ago

But the PS3 isn't 4K capable for video and isn't Andriod TV. Stop comparing the two, that would be foolish.

@Captain_TomAN94

*Shield TV cost $199 for 16GB, PS3 is $180 on amazon for 12GB
*Shield TV cost $299 for a 500GB bundle, PS3 is $250 on amazon for a 500GB bundle
*Shield TV has significantly more multimedia options, PS3 has BluRay
*Shield TV is a 500 GFLOPS device, PS360 are 200 - 250 GFLOPS
*Shield TV plays PS360PC games like Doom 1080p @ 60fps low PC settings, PS360 720 @ 60 unlocked console settings
*Shield TV has native android games and some PC games, PS360 has a great library
*Shield TV can stream your PC library, PS360 cannot
*Shield TV has 4k support, PS360 don't
*Shield TV can run full android, and online apps, PS360 cannot
*Shield TV can run mods for things like remote play, emulators, etc... / PS360 cannot
*Shield TV has GeForce Now which unlike PSNow gives you not only streaming access to game, but also the full digital download of the game you buy rights to.

Shield TV is an all around more useful device. The PS360 are still great consoles, but the Shield TV just does more for people outside of gaming, and when it comes to gaming it has better hardware and better streaming support (especially if you have a NVIDIA GPU to stream games directly from your PC).

Where it fails is that gaming on Android isn't no where near as optimized as console. When games are optimized you get things like Doom above where it's 1080p @ 60fps on Shield TV, meanwhile 720p @ 60fps unlocked on console giving the Shield TV an unquestionable win in performance. But then you have unoptimized games where the GPU has to power through things by force and you still get a better image, but variable performance from 30fps - 60fps, and when spikes are that far apart it's better to simply V-Sync performance to the lower fps.

But then you add multimedia, and all the other things Shield TV can do and it's no competition as to which is the more useful device. When it comes to gaming PS360 have the libraries, which is why they earn the buy over Shield if you're solely looking for a gaming device. But Shield TV does so much more that it's not even a comparison. Android Apps are much better than console, XBMC and similar services run without problem, emulators turn this 1 device into every console from 6th gen specs (including Wii) and before, GameStream sends you PC games right to the Shield TV, and GeForce Now streams games from the internet to the Shield TV and also nets you a free digital download of the game for your gaming PC.

What does it mean to be "twice as strong" as 360? XBO level? Or close? Or is it marketing tricka (aka false advertisement)?

BlackPanther3871d ago

It means it is twice as powerful. The Tegra X1 has twice as much power as a 360.

ABizzel13871d ago

PS360 consoles have 200 - 250 GFLOPS GPUs.

Tegra X1 in the Shield TV is a 500 GFLOP GPU.

"2x as strong"

And exactly what Sony is intending to offer through Android OS powered TV sets.

Expanding playstation Eco system into the TV itself.

For sometime, I'd been contemplating getting a Shield to replce my Steam Link hw as the Shield is a more capable 4K/60 device for streaming. Happy they notified us before I finally decided to pull the trigger on getting one.

amazinglover1240d ago

You can still stream using the shield just not natively, you'll have download and use the stream link app on the shield.

They likely are not supporting it natively to save money on developing and maintaining the feature and letting valves app do it instead.

I hope this doesn't end the Moonlight service functionality

... and yet no support for PS4

Cernunnos1935d ago

PS4 controller works just fine with mine.

Vits1935d ago

It's nice to have the support. But without the unique functions of the DualSense I wouldn't go for it unless you already have a PS5 laying around. As there are many other controllers compatible with the system that will also cost much less.

1nsomniac1935d ago

I don’t think anyone would be planing on buying the PS5 controller for the shield specifically. The idea is that if you have a ps5 with the controller and would prefer to use it on the shield instead of the supplied shield controller, then you can.

Vits1935d ago

Is more of general advice. For PC gaming is exactly the same thing, while the DS4 was a fairly popular option for having a good quality/price ratio the Dual Sense is better to be avoided as you are not going to get anything out of it's special features. But will be paying the premium anyway.

Also only older models and the Gaming Edition of the Shield have a supplied controller. For all the rest including the newer cylindrical and Pro editions you have to supply your own if you plan on doing any gaming at all on it.

1nsomniac1935d ago (Edited 1935d ago )

The cylindrical one doesn’t come with a controller. The rest do, there is no gaming edition. I have one.

Vits1935d ago

Yeah you either got a old model or got the Gaming package and didn't notice. The newest 2019 version of it does not come with a controller.

1nsomniac1935d ago

According to that your right the newest pro version doesn’t come with a controller, which seems ridiculous to remove a bundled item and still charge the same if not more for it.

I have the 2017 version.

Vits1935d ago (Edited 1935d ago )

To be fair. They did also change the SoC of the units.
Both 2019 versions use the X1+ that is a 25% performance bump over the normal X1 of the older versions. And it really makes a difference for some things like GC/Wii emulation.

But it is worth $60 (controller price)? It's very debatable.

Just ordered my Shield T.V (new tube looking one), coming tomorrow, it should pair nice with my pc. This is great news as I have both PS5 and Xbox controllers no need to buy another controller.

ouch that home hardware is lacking

Mr_Writer852287d ago

But the content is not. And that's the key.

I'm going to try this simply because my laptop is old and I have no desire/room/time to buy/build a gaming PC.

Yet I have a big library of Steam games my laptop struggles to play. I can simply dip in and out as and when I choose and play these games for a small fee.

When I've had my fill, I can cancel, no extra cost.

Google hardware and even tech is superior. However, cost and content wise, it blows it out of the water.

VincenteFox2287d ago

I didn't mention it in the piece, because it wasn't really relevant (since I was downscaling to take the comparison image) but the home hardware is a 5700XT, a 3700X, 32 gb ram at 3600 mhz and an X570 board.
