Will Disc Based Gaming Be Around Forever?

SegmentNext - It is a fact that we have come a long way from cartridges to discs and now onto digital-only downloads. However, when disc based gaming made it to the mainstream it flushed out the use of cartridges; but that was not the case with digital downloads and discs.

With digital copies of games publishers and developers only have to pay Sony and Microsoft for royalties. They don't have to pay for manufacturing, packaging, distribution, shipping etc. I hope we don't go all digital but if we do go all digital then digital prices should drop between $40 - $50.

Persistantthug3878d ago

In theory.

But who's to say Sony and Microsoft will lower the prices of their digital stores? I honestly have my doubts about that.

rainslacker3877d ago

They do have to pay a percentage towards distribution, as well as the licensing costs. That percentage is lower than what it would cost to distribute the game considering the margins they have to keep in tact for the retailer. If someone buys something on the PS/XBox store, Sony takes a percentage of that, not unlike how Apple or Google take a cut on their store. I don't know what the percentage is, but given that about 33% of the MSRP is not received through retail sale by the publisher, along with the manufacturing and distribtion costs of the digital product, they still make more with much less overhead.

Imagine having to download a 100GB+ 4K-ready game in the next console cycle...

LifeInNZ3878d ago

People have been saying that sort of thing for decades yet network speeds keep improving. 10 years ago I would never have contemplated having to download 50GB for a game now its the norm.

madcowzz3878d ago

It might be the norm now but it still doesn't make it (for lack of a better word) acceptable. I hate having to download a 50GB+ game that takes an entire day to download and install, eating up a crapload of hard drive space and a large fraction of my monthly data cap.

Physical based media all the way. I love putting my collection on display and is much easier to download onto my hard drive. Mostly because I don't have to download the game.

They aren't improving as fast as bandwidth is increasing on the back end. The back end of the internet is already strained with the huge boom of streaming services, and it's not growing at the same rate as the rate of game file sizes or growth of the market itself which are going up at an exponential rate.

There are logistical reasons for what's happening with the improvement of the internet, and one of the biggest misconceptions is that because more people have faster internet now, that the actual internet back bone is also getting better at the same rate.

The internet also isn't growing evenly across all markets, so urban areas are growing rather fast, becoming more strained faster, whereas suburban or rural areas are sometimes way behind the times. This isn't an issue for retail, as the product is only dependent on being able to get it into the customers hands.

kneon3878d ago

That would take about an hour for me, and I don't even have fiber. I get 250Mbps+ over cable.

By next gen 1Gbps connections will not be uncommon.

optimus3877d ago

By contrast, that would take me around 4-5 days with my 3mbps connection. :(... So no digital for me for new games, unless they're the smaller arcade games...i wouldn't pass up a good digital deal though and simply wait out the few days until it downloads.

secretcode3878d ago

It will as long as internet speeds aren't up to par and data caps still exist.

OhMyGandhi3878d ago

nailed it right on the head.
my biggest fear is that as games are getting bigger and bigger, it's going to put insane strain on my internet connection to meet these absolutely massive file sizes. I do it all the time on steam because of the discount, and level of convenience, but it's also because I have a choice. Sometimes it's nice to just press "eject" when I'm done with a game, rather then delete a 40gb title to free up space.

Perjoss3878d ago

Yes it will. Eventually the sun will explode sending all of its orbiting planets spinning off into infinity. But Disc Based Gaming will still be around (forever).

Lennoxb633878d ago

If the sun explodes, it aint sending no planets nowhere lol. We're going to sit right here and fry.

Perjoss3878d ago

If my science was as high as my Fallout 3 characters' I would have known that :P

SegaGamer3878d ago

By the time the Sun explodes, Earth won't even exist anymore, it will be engulfed by the sun's size.......but somehow Disc based gaming will survive :p

Well, that and my trusty ol N64......That thing is Nuclear proof. :P

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio13d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing13d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit13d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing13d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
