I will always support a developer and not buy used games unless of course the system has stopped production (ie Xbox) or the games have ceased production (ie Playstation games)

wow so many things wrong with that letter:

1. Call in Trade amount: depend on where you call i know that my store will do itover the phone. Also if that store wont do it ask for another stores number and call them. simple as that.

2. to many stores: yea its kinda weird but would you want to travel 30- miles to get to another one. or take 5 minutes to go to another one.

3. Pre-order phone call: There is only one call that goes out and its the day before the game is in store. so i dont know what he taking about.

4. Finding something online but not in store computer: THEN BUY IT ONLINE DUH! if you hate going to the store so much then why didnt you buy the game online. and it depends on who he talked to and how they put it into the computer. they may have searched to see if it was in stock and it would come up with anything if it wasnt.

5. GameInformer/Pre-orders: those affect our hours and numbers for the month thats way we always ask.

anyways. Like everyone else has said Dont like them dont shop there. simple.

so I'm not complaining - thought almost every OTHER title is a rip to trade.

Here's how I see it:

Good:
- Game Informer Mag - my fav mag.
- Can reliably preorder ANY game
- Lots of stores in town means a lot of inventory and other places to go if someone ticks me off
- Good inventory of old games - I can pick up a random racing game for my 3 year old to fiddle with for nothing.

Bad:
- Ignorant associates who know nothing about games/gaming - still waiting for the PSP Halo this guy was insisting was coming...and I'm waiting for MS to charge me $5-10 for each back. compat. xbox game I play on my 360! - No joke!
- Rude/unprofessional associates - arguing among each other and with customers in the middle of the store, or talking about customers after they leave in front of other customers.
- Crappy trade in values most of the time.

My solution - I RARELY trade in games - almost never. I only did GTAIV because I happened to ask about the value in an effort to get a PS3. (And I just wasn't playing it)

Also, I've found a really good store in town, and that's where I go 90% of the time unless I happen to be near another, and I just want to check out what they have.

I can agree with alot of the stuff you guys are saying. Mainly the whole "Don't shop there if you don't like it" thing.

This guy is being completely fake. 6 bucks for a GTAIV trade in? That's not even true. And gas? First of all man, you shouldn't own a game system if money is that tight, let alone spending money on gas to get there in the first place. At that point it ends up equal. Have you ever heard of a bike? Maybe a Bus? That costs what? $1.25?

I'm sick of Gamestop getting cussed at for giving you the option. You are not forced to do anything they provide. Then you take the deal...And cuss them out when its your fault in the first place. Here is an idea...If trade in goes down...they would raise the price...but it won't. WHY? BECAUSE YOU GUYS KEEP TRADING! If it's not broke then don't fix it.

I don't pressure anyone to reserve, I ask, its my job. If they say no, that means no. I work there cause I love gaming and everything about it. I'm not a salesman.

However if your stupid enough to do a 100$ trade in of games and not get the discount card that's your stupidity, because fact is that card is a better deal than any of the big retailers like FYE or Wal Mart could ever offer.

Also when You buy Two Worlds for 60 bucks new at wal mart when you could have got it for 55 used and cant return...you will be thinking...Damn if I bought it used I would be 55 bucks to the good. Instead you will come to Gamestop and get 25 for it....then cuss us out.

Yeah, I'm sure 50% of you guys didn't know that. If you don't like it, you could return it in 7 days as long as its used. Maybe that's cause most of you guys listen to idiots like JW or whatever his name is instead of hearing the truth.

And don't come crying to me when you had the option to reserve Mario Kart and Wii Fit before they came out and now you cant find em.

Okay first off I work at gamestop…the kiosks are never broken at least in my store. We just shut them down because parents like to drop their kids off and leave for hours on end while I get to babysit them. Secondly the stores I have been to including my own don’t smell like pee. Also yes employees can CHECK out games but it is for testing reasons only and the REAL REASON why the games are not sealed is because we HAVE to gut them in order to display a case on the wall so the average thief doesn’t come in and steal the case off the wall with a game in it….hmmmmm that sure makes sense. The guy is the article is right that we dont give trade in values over the phone. It is because the customer in front of us in our store is a little more of a priority. If you want service come into the store….otherwise wait on hold till I am able to get to you. it is like this if I have customers in line other customers have to go to the back of the line that are in the store. The people on the phone they can just cut in line anytime they want to. I am sorry but NO WAY!!!!
Another thing we as employees are pressured to sell preorders to you the customer because if we dont we will get written up or fired. The employees are not paid a commission on any of the sales that we get at all.Also a lot of customers treat us like we are a freaking bank...I would like to cancel my games...why is that? Oh I need a pack of cigarettes. or oh I just want to use it to get a game today. WE are not BANKSTOP we are GAMESTOP if you want to deposit money just to withdraw it go to you local BANK. a GTAIV is worth 25 dollars trade right now……with the 20% add on it is 27.50 and with a discount card it is 30.25. NOT 6 dollars……another reason why customer service is down is because you have time and time again people trying to return their broken systems 1 year or 2 years after the fact. You have people bringing in stolen goods and trying sell them for cash. You have idiots bringing in knives and cutting the PS3 controllers straight from the KIOSK. It is NOT easy to be an employee there….but please get you facts straight if your going to attack them. I will concede that on a lot of games they give 2 dollars and charge 10. Like GTAIV it is 25 with out all of the bonuses….they will sell it for 54.99 with a discount card (the subscription which we are also pressured to sell and dont get commissions on) it is a 10 dollar difference over the new game. Before you talk get the facts straight. and if you have a bad expierience go to another store or shop at best buy or circuit city. I will tell you this the employees in the gaming department where I live at best buy are morons and I would much rather have someone who knows what they are talking about to tell me about games. One more thing we dont make up fake games for you to reserve…….That is illegal and will get us fired.

gamestop/eb games are pathetic, all my games come from bestbuy/futureshop/ or even wal-mart and all those stores usually have lower prices than gamestop/eb games.

I don't have any problems with Gamestop. I'm happy for the used games because I've been picking up alot of PS2 games on the cheap. The employees at my local shop are pretty harmless when it comes to pestering, but I do have a funny story from the other week.

I was there and saw Xenosaga on the shelf for like $0.29 and decided to pick it up (I had a quarter and nickel on hand :) ). I brought the box to the counter and the guy goes to the index drawer to get the disc. He's looking and looking and looking. Then comes back and he's like we don't have any copies of this game. I said that's strange because there are 4 boxes on the shelf, so there must be 4 copies in the drawer. He goes back and he's looking and looking, then the manager catches sight of him looking and looking and comes over. I can hear them talking between themselves and the employee says,
"Tom, I can't find this game"

"It has to be there, just keep looking"

"It's not here. Look, I'm not an idiot. I'm in college unlike alot of the other employees you have here. I've gone over the whole 'Z' section 4 times, so someone must not know how to file".

Tom just grabs the 'X' index page and flips to it and walks away.

That's pretty much why I don't shop at Gamestop. They're dumb as ****, they hassle you around the clock about pre-orders and GI subscriptions, and their trade-in policies are complete ****. I don't blame the employees for being forced to garner pre-orders to keep their jobs, but I do blame them for their lack of knowledge concerning video games. Gamestop is dead, I shop at Play-n-Trade; They're a privately owned franchises and most of the time, don't give you **** deals or bound by corporation laws to hassle you every time you walk in there. Hell, they let you try out whatever game you want! (A privilege, not a right!)

PnT > Gamestop (anyday, everyday)

Trying to sell me a "new" game that they have opened and put in a little sleeve. New = shrink wrapped from the manufacturer, not opened up and in a sleeve just so they can have a display box.

put the display games in a security device or something FFS, don't open it up and pass it off as new.

Games that have there shrink wrap removed and the security seal broken should not be sold as new. Lame excuse because of theft reasons. Nobody else does that BS and there 5 times the size of gamestop stores.

every time I pre order something from my local gamestop, the employees take all the pre order content (art books, ect.) so when you go to pick up your copy on launch day, there is nothing. so, I end up canceling the pre order and buying it at target. I mean, there are very few times when you have to pre order to get a copy of something, its usually just to get extra content.

I have to admit after reading all of these complaints all the time, I really wonder if people think only gamestop does this kind of stuff.

When I shop at my best buy, they want me to sign up for a best buy credit card. When I go to Fry's electronics, they want me to sign up for a fry's credit card. If you shop for a car and want bare bones, the salesman will try to get you into the "power package" (worked for a dealership). Why settle for SD with that HD TV you have? We can upgrade you to a HD package (also job related). Heck, I can't even pull into the drive through of a burger king without some 4 month old recording asking me if I want a meatnormus omlet meal today (or something to that effect). Profit is the name of the game people. Does it get annoying? Yeah, I'm sick of you trying to sell me that year of sports illustrated even though I've told you no thanks for 3 years now. But you have to understand that employers expect employees to perform. If you can't bring in money, they'll hire someone who can and you'll be out of a job. It's too bad bills don't pay themselves. I can tell you I sure wish they did.

I do agree that the trade values do suck. That's why a free market is good. Nobody is holding a gun to your head when you are selling stuff. If you are looking to sell a game for $30 and you are being offered $15, you say no thanks and look else where. Maybe a friend or competitor will offer more. But more times than not, I've noticed people just don't want to shop around and just accept what's on the table instead. So why offer more if people don't demand it? Hence why you will always get ripped off.

I'll talk about the other issues another time. Hope you've enjoyed my thoughts on the matter so far.

Is that there is no competition in terms of a game store. You guys like to state Walmart (which is funny when your complaining about a monopoly...) and bestbuy but the truth is there isn't any true gaming stores to go against them. Why should they drop the trade in credit for a game, you might not go for that price but someone will. There is no incentive to change there tactic, it works, its effective, and no other place is big enough so that they feel the need to give more money for a trade in. Gamecrazy is dead, they are going bankrupt all over so they cant hold any forms of competition. Without proper competition, there is nothing to force them to change there tactics, and such never will. Customer Service is not a problem, there are literally assholes at every store and to think otherwise is crazy. Basing a chain of stores on an employee is like basing your opinion of a race on one guy, its stupid and ignorant. Base it on there trades or there company, but hearing that people hate gamestop because one person was mean, or didn't know what they were talking about is just funny to me.

i hate that they give me 5$ for a PS3 game, but when i looked at used games they sell it at a 50$ price almost the price of a new game, even used PS2 games are still selling at 30$ its ridiculous :/

ok so i work at gamestop.i do agree with the trade in prices for they do suck.i go to blockbuster to trade.i do ask people to preorder a game ...soooo what its my job. I am not going to get fired over something retarded...and just say no if you don't want to preorder the damn game.i gotta to keep my job and like everyone else.its our JOBS.do i come in to your work and talk crap about you or get pissed because i hate when you do your job.and you know what the best part is....I am 19 and a ASM there i get 11.00$ a hour.get to borrows games...and plenty of SLOW days, i get to meet lots of cool people who arent all pricks...but some are. so dont like it there dont go there makes my job a hell of alot easy ahahahhaha..

Wow this totally describes what's happened with Gamestop in my town. I stopped shopping there years ago though, because even before they swallowed up EB I realized their prices were too high. I later turned to Gamecrazy, but they went away with Hollywood Video.

I may work at a Gamestop, I do agree with a lot what this man has to say. I work there because I love games, not because I want to screw hard working people out of money. Knights of the Old Republic did NOT come out on Gamecube and Grand Theft Auto IV did NOT come out on PS2. Since Gamestop took over EBgames it's been nothing but s*it, the one that I work at used to be Funcoland and the one in the mall (also a short walk to) used to be a Software Etc. Employees on the other had are a different story, yes I know that a lot of them are quite stupid when it comes to information, but some stores have a lot of employees that know what the hell they are talking about. Also all the trade ins are a rip off, but we all know this. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for PS2 you get a trade in value of $37 then they mark it up to $79.99! So if you have a copy of the game go put it on eBay and chances are you will get $90-$110 for it. The worst part is that Gamestop gives $20 for GTA IV right now and then they sell it for $54.99. I also see gullible mothers on a daily basis, and a lot of them aren’t really gullible but there kids don't appreciate what they got and then they go to the bargain bin and pick out a worse game then what they had before! It's not like I can say "don't do this" since the managers keep a very watchful eye on their employees and make sure that they are asking for magazine subscriptions and reserves. Also on a side note, If a employee reserves a game they cannot cancel it without a District Manager's approval, and most of the time they say no from what I heard. So in a way Gamestop employees do have a cretin right to be pissed off. But it was their fault for signing the papers to work there. Gamestop is right up there with K-mart and their "do you want a Sears card?”

From all the stuff I have seen, heard and done I could write a book. Heck, what I wrote right now is half a page in Microsoft Word! I also apologize that my thoughts on the article are not in any real order.

I went in their to trade my old DS today for a new nintendo ds lite, they told me we can give you $20 cash for that. I think thats a big rip off...i now i bought that thing for $150 when it first came out. Now its worth $60 AT LEAST. They should be fair to their customers...
