OT: I understand the notion of the article and it's intent. I just don't think that I can be bothered (as much as the author at least) getting upset by the usage of the word "gamer". Instead of looking upon this as a purely negative thing. Perhaps you should take account of the fact we are likely witnessing the semantic progression of the word. What once was a stereotypically negative connotation is now becoming more positive. What once was a smaller group of people is now becoming a community...a community with the power to shift trends and cause changes. Our decisions, whether good or bad, have caused multi-million dollar corporations to change their attitudes and the way they treat us. (it's a slow process, but it's happening) Though we, as a community, sometimes choose to. We can no longer just simply be taken for granted. All of this from the softening of the idea behind the "gamer".
The corporate, dudebro image is simply a marketing tool that has proven effective. It promotes the idea that I can be a normal dude and not be judged because I play games. (yes, it also underestimates the very core of the industry...but that's advertisement) However, many people (mostly older) STILL probably associate the word "gamer" with the older stereotypes than they do with the dudbro. (good or bad)
I'm not one to stand on high and pronounce that I game therefore I am. I simply like playing games and don't mind the idea that someone uses the term "gamer"...as long as it's inclusive of people who play videogames and have some desire to learn about games. Besides, it truly is just turning a noun into a verb.

Gamers tend to be smarter persons, they understand new tech and software, they know English even if it's not their native language, they know more about what's happening in this world than the average Joe. There are average people that don't know how to save a phone number in their phone and what they do all day? wake up, go to work, come home, watch boring tv, eat, fk, sleep, repeat. Gaming is more than the average people will understand ever. They are judged because they are not understand-ed by "small brains" hell do you even see articles made by gamers stating that non gamers persons aren't cool? This world needs to stop judging each other and start helping each other whichever way they can.
