Mad Max Review - IGN

IGN writes "At its core, Mad Max is a game about the death of hope. It’s about learning to find something to cling to in a pointless existence of murder and regret, and then watching it turn to ash in your hands."

seanpitt233895d ago

I have been playing it for about 3 days and it's fantastic so happy IGN gave it a good score. Let's see what the other big sites say.

Dario_DC3895d ago (Edited 3895d ago )

Gamespot gave it a 6 and Polygon a 5.

Edit: Why are people disagreeing with me? I just posted review scores FFS...

enigmaticheretic3895d ago

It seems that Gamespot and Polygon have been giving low review scores lately almost like they're doing out of spite.

fallacious3895d ago

polygon has lost all credibility. they're just trying to be different and give good games lower scores for clicks. take anything they say with a grain of salt.

DoomeDx3895d ago

Gamespot gave Until Dawn an 8

seanpitt233895d ago

I used to take note of gamespot reviews but after they gave the last of us a 8 I lost interest and don't take them as seriously anymore.

Bolts3895d ago (Edited 3895d ago )

Gamespot is totally legit. Their Batman score was dead on. They may ruffle the feathers of a few fanboys now and then but I prefer that over sites that hand out 10s like candy.

fermcr3895d ago (Edited 3895d ago )

Reviewers give out perfect scores like it's a normal thing. Is it that that you guys want?
Honestly, a perfect score nowadays has become something trivial, it has little value. Any game launched today, will get a perfect score from some reviewer out there.

If a reviewer doesn't give a perfect score to a game we like, he/she is automatically bashed... that's the gaming world we have, a bunch of crybabies.

Tedakin3895d ago

Wow really? And yeah the disagree system on this site is retarded.

Maxor3895d ago

Random and fanboy disagrees is one of the many reasons why N4G sucks. Idiots will pull a disagree train on you for posting facts and there's nothing you can do about it.

XanderZane3895d ago (Edited 3895d ago )

I don't take Polygon, GiantBomb or Gamespot reviews seriously anymore. They've given poor scores to great games in the past that had gamers scratching their heads. I'll pick up my copy of Mad Max tomorrow.

Yui_Suzumiya3895d ago

I got ruffled by Gamespot when they gave Duke Nukem Forever a 3/10. I gave it an 8/10.

81BX3895d ago

@Maxor.... exactly, you can't do anything about it. Its just a disagree button. No need to stress it. It is what it is.

phoenixwake3894d ago

GameSpot's overall review quality has gone down as of late, they were my go-to website for nearly 15 years, but now for every accurate and biting review they make one like this:

Dead Rising 3: Apocalypse Edition 3/10. No, not for stale mechanics, poor optimization or any of the other issues the game actually has, but sexism and stereotypes.

Timesplitter143894d ago

I think it's pretty funny how because this game was kinda somewhat implied to be a PS4 exclusive when it was announced (event though it's not), people on N4G are still super protective of it like they are with other PS4 exclusives.

JWiLL5523894d ago

If you want to know how much misogynistic behaviour takes place in a certain game, visit Polygon!

If you want a fair and decent review, go literally anywhere else!

ABBAJESUS3894d ago

People who care about disagrees should get a life.

endzeitkind3894d ago

is it for casual players or does this game has something for pros to bite on?

kupomogli3894d ago

@seanpitt

An 8/10 for The Last of Us is more respectable than the 10s thrown out by everyone else.

I enjoyed The Last of Us but there was plenty wrong with the game. Stealth segments that you'd stealth your way through over half of it, only to have a story scene require you to kill all of the clickers/runners and no way to progress otherwise(the part where you're outside of the school for example.)

An early part of the game in the subway you could be crouching and barely moving, sometimes clickers would still hear you. That section right there was one of the only sections it seemed that clickers were far more responsive than any other part in the game.

Pushing pallets to push Elly across the water. You do it so many times that at the dam, she even makes a comment about it. "Yeah, yeah, get on the fu**ing pallett."

Oh, and who can forget that sniper that knows exactly where you're at 100% of the time you're within his sight. I guess the "act like a distraction thing" couldn't be implemented because this the sniper guy was pretty much a Dark Sim from Perfect Dark 64(they were aiming at you 100% of the time, even when you weren't in their site.) At the same part of the game, the enemies that spawn out of nowhere once you pass a specific section of the map.

Also the multiplayer is very good, one of my favorites, but some of the perks are broken. Can't be heard whenever you're sneaking? You know as soon as that one comes available everyone has it. The rechargeable listening mechanic to give you a very short amount of time to hear where nearby players would be was a major part of the online(similar to how Batman Arkham Origins online did it.) That one perk just completely removed removes that aspect from the game, really rendering it completely useless, so why even add the mechanic at all? I'm sure the developers put two and two together and realized that everyone would choose this perk which broke a major function of the multiplayer which made it a bit more unique.

So yeah. I'd say an 8/10 is a more realistic score. There's no way the game deserved a 10/10 from anyone as it just had too many glaring in your face flaws that it's clear everyone ignored.

kupomogli3894d ago (Edited 3894d ago )

@seanpitt

If there's one review site that I don't put any trust in it's IGN. Constant bias thrown around for their reviews and they can't keep it straight as to whether one game gets marked down for being too similar to another game or not, even when it's the same reviewer. Greg Miller scored Yakuza 3, what many consider to be the worst game in the series an 8.5(even as the worst game in the series it's a great game,) and then Yakuza 4, which to many is known to be the best game in the series, a 6.5, because the gameplay seemed a little bit similar and because you were in Kamurocho again. Despite being better than Yakuza 3 in every way, he was bashing the game left and right, and it really came down to because the game was similar in style to the old game, but he felt the need to bash everything about the game so it's deserving of the awful score that he gave it. He reviewed Yakuza 4 only a year later than Yakuza 3 btw.

Two of my favorite games are also reviewed poorly at IGN. 3/10 for both games actually. Brigandine The Legend of Forsena and God Hand. Both are recognized as amazing games now days, but back then the games were slammed by some journalists, and IGN gave them the worst of the reviews.

Although as bad as IGN is, I don't put any faith into any journalistic websites because really, most journalists are out there to say what you want to hear. Final Fantasy 13? According to most people who have played it, it's a pos, but coincidentally it scored 89 on Metacritic and it was higher in the first week until the disappointment from the fans started rolling in, which I'm sure got some journalists who didn't upload their scores yet to do a revision of their reviews.

All these video game websites are corrupt, trying to get your hits any way they can. Whether it's posting a high score because they think it's what the community wants to see, posting a low score which turns controversial because all the rest are posting higher, etc, etc. It's all just finagled to get your hits.

*edit*

Another favorite game of mine is Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles and I could point out why the person at Eurogamer that reviewed was crap at the game rather than giving it a proper score(and review.) His review was all sorts of bias and from the writing you'd expect it was the worst game in the world. I could debunk most of the review just by showing you gameplay and pointing out statements he's made in his review, and my being good at the game has nothing to do with it(which if you're curious how good I am at the game look up my Youtube videos of it.)

TheGreatGamer3895d ago (Edited 3895d ago )

Seen a few lower scores than I had expected for this game so good to see a fairly high one but I'm picking it up nonetheless, I don't place too much value in reviews anymore

TKCMuzzer3895d ago

Yep, sometimes if it looks like your kind of game then taking a risk usually pays off. I have found this more and more over the last couple of years.

OB1Biker3895d ago

I agree reviews scores dont mean much, but reviews from sites/reviewers you usually agree with is good to know.
Cool you dont say its too high anyway ;)

WilliamUsher3894d ago

The low scores was because it wasn't deemed progressive enough and that it falls into gaming's problem with misogyny.

I'm not even making this up. You can visit a certain Reddit thread that discusses corruption in media to get the low-down. I'm not going to mention the website that gave out the score for the whole sexism thing because there's no sense in bringing attention to that site.

skydragoonityx3895d ago

Seems this game is a must play

XanderZane3894d ago

Yeah, I just picked up my copy and I'm installing it now. I've watched several gameplay trailers of the game and I like the way the game looks and plays. The survival aspect of the game is on point I think. Time to play this game now.

Rookie_Monster3895d ago (Edited 3895d ago )

Definitely worth checking out down the road as some of the reviews are pretty positive so far. Just not at launch for me as there are too many other games I need to get first.

showtimefolks3895d ago

True and I think if this was launched in July or early august it could have done well, it's still launching with release of mad max movie so maybe it will be a sleeper hit

I am definitely picking it up

Bathyj3895d ago

Yeah, I might have got this game over Batman, but Im not getting it over MGSV. I hope its good, but I fear its timing is going to hurt it.

IamTylerDurden13894d ago

@ rookie

Do you really need reviews to tell you whether or not to get a game? If you research enough you should be able to tell whether or not a game is your cup of tea. Ppl need to take their brains back - "The Order is bad bc they told me so", "Watchdogs is good bc they told me so".

Metacritic will tell you that Cod Ghosts is better than Machine Games' Wolfenstein...GTAV is better than The Last of Us. Utter bs if you ask me.

Mad Max looks fun as heck to me, reviews be damned.

Rookie_Monster3894d ago

LOL, that is what I got GameFly for...homie.

I rented The Orders 1886, Godzilla, Watchdogs..and yes, they are as bad as the majority of reviews said they were. But hey, me being a big time gamer , I'll give some some mediocre games a shot with rental and see what the fuss is about.

Now back to MGSV and then some Gears online and then some Rare Replay. Now, these are games that worth every penny of my hard earn money and the reviews are dead on. ;)

showtimefolks3895d ago

I think this is a good game with overall something like 70-75 out of 100. I think we all expected a amazing game but got a good one instead

Still buying it because it looks like my type of game

I hope avalanche can deliver with just cause 3, for as good as people make just cause 2 out to be, it's really a over rated game imo

Story is very bad
Gunplay was just simply trash

They are talking about giving more freedom to do stunts and bigger open world but tell us you actually have focused on improving stuff from just cause 2

And I know some of you will reply to say story doesn't matter in every game but to some it does. Even is the story is again bad please fix the gunplay to where it's up to Notch with other 3rd person action games

Tdmd3895d ago (Edited 3895d ago )

The gunplay was one of my biggest grips with that game. I wanted to like it, as I'm crazy about sandbox games, but that trashy gunplay ruined it for me. It seems like no one else cares, though. Not a single mention about this in any of the trailers or comment sections.

LOGICWINS3895d ago

I had the impression that guns were supposed to be rare in the wasteland. Does the gunplay really play that big of role in the game?

Bathyj3895d ago

The Gunplay was good for a sandbox game. Better than any GTA game, thats for sure. I cant believe how bad GTA's gunplay still is, I had my hopes up after Max Payne 3.

I know my opinion isnt the popular one because people love to hate on it, but Watchdogs has the best gunplay, stealth and cover system in an open world game. Well, the best until today that is. Cant wait to get home from work.

showtimefolks3895d ago

You mean that gunplay was better in just cause 2 compared to gta 4 or gta 5?

I totally disagree gta 5 gunplay is great. Just cause 2 was an open world to cause havoc with very little story and very bad Gunplay mechanics imo

Audiggity3894d ago

Yeah, I normally agree with you Bathy - but, the gunplay in every Just Cause game was terrrrrrible!

GTA IV and V were leaps and bounds better than JC1 or 2.

I truly hope that JC3 has much tighter gameplay, it will be hard to put down.

As for Watchdogs, I'd lean in your favor. The cover system and gunplay was very nice. Unfortunately, that just about does it for the list of "pro's" when it comes to WD.

Bathyj3894d ago

Maybe I have rose tinted glasses on because I had so much fun with the game. Its possible, I havent played it Just Cause 2 in years.

All I know is I enjoyed it immensely and dont remember any major dramas but I always get annoyed at the clunky shooting interface in GTA. Theyve had enough attempts to have perfected that but they arent even close and they really should be in a game that has so much shooting in it.

Anyway, heres hoping JC3 is great, I have big hopes for it and MGSV has raised the bar so much for Open World shooting.

Mad Max Remains Criminally Underrated 9 Years Later

The Mad Max game, released in 2015 by Avalance Studio has turned 9 years old; is one of the most underrated games of recent times.

tech4gamers.com
thorstein605d ago

Yes it is. My only complaint with the game was one of the trophies tied to the time trials. I just thought it was tedious to try to go after it.

Other than that it was worth every penny.

SDuck605d ago

There's an unobtainable achievement tied to server gimmicks since the servers were shut down (for pc players, you can just get all other achievements and grab the save file with that achievement from nexusmod), but man do I love this game.
After Furiosa, I decided to go back and rewatch the original 3 movies and recognizing so many things on Mad Max 2 from the game made me appreciate the game even more!

RhinoGamer88605d ago

Agreed, so is Days Gone... shame.

ChasterMies605d ago

Oof no. It’s appropriately if not overrated.

ZeekQuattro605d ago

I still play it from time to time. Sucks it never took off as I remember looking forward to a possible sequel. Silly me.

Demetrius605d ago

On my 2nd playthrough and I still adore the vibe it gives

AAWELLS09604d ago

It def has a vibe to it and I agree its perfect for the game. Its such a shame it didnt get a sequel as I think it would've been their magnum opus.

Sorry George Miller, but you’re wrong about the Mad Max game

George Miller expressed dismay toward the 2015 Mad Max game recently, but Avalanche Studios' take on the lore is still so good to this day.

Mad Max is a good game... George Miller should STFU.

Old_Scout704d ago

He didn't say it wasn't good. Maybe you should take your own advice and look past the articles misleading headline. Here's the actual quote. “wasn’t as good as we wanted it to, it wasn’t in our hands.” That is all he said about it.

S2Killinit704d ago (Edited 704d ago )

In my opinion the guy himself Is pretty mediocre, so I dont like how he talks as if he’s something special. I dont think he would know a good game if it hit him in the face.

StormSnooper704d ago (Edited 704d ago )

If George Miller had good taste he wouldn’t be wearing those ridiculous glasses.

-Foxtrot705d ago

I think the funny thing is if Kojima made a Mad Max game it would be so trippy and "out there" I don't think it would feel like Mad Max by the time he's done with it. This is why he's better off with original new IPs.

Kojima seems like a buzz word these film directors use because he's probably the only big name they've heard from the gaming industry.

Wretchedstain705d ago

Article is correct in my opinion, Miller is wrong. That Death Stranding II trailer is bonkers, looking forward to that in itself.

And I agree, unless Mr Kojima wants to change his tune, or laughably, be told what to do, you're right, it wouldn't be Mad Max or close.

porkChop705d ago

Yup, Kojima really doesn't suit Mad Max. Avalanche did a great job though. It looked, felt, and played like what I'd expect from a Mad Max game. I really enjoyed my time with it, and the sand storms were handled incredibly well.

jznrpg704d ago

I think Kojima could definitely make a great Mad Max game.

SubtilizZer704d ago

I disagree… I don’t want to see Kojima do Mad Max or whatever… But I disagree with your take. Kojima is first a huge fan of film. I think saying he wouldn’t be able to stick to the lore of the world that was built is kinda crazy.

I’m sure he would be able to stick to the creative confines of the source material fairly well. Chances are he’s a huge fan.

I’m sure he’s a bit of a”buzzword” sure but I’m willing to bet it’s mutual respect for his work as well.

TheGamingHounds705d ago

I never played it but the recent buzz around Mad Max has piqued my interest. Will check it out this year for sure

maelstromb705d ago (Edited 705d ago )

MM is not a perfect game by any means as it was held back by lots of repetitious, standard open-world copy and paste missions, but the devs SO perfectly captured the world, atmosphere, lore and brutality. It also just so happens to boast one of THE best photo modes out there and some of the most impressive explosions I've ever seen in a game to date. The car combat is of course another impressive standout, both vicious and fun. MM is a game which I have revisited multiple times since its release, and now having just seen Furiosa, I can feel it calling me back again.

There's a ton to love there, but I think you'll pickup on the areas where the devs struggled likely due to reigning in the scope, budget and time constraints, leading to an incredibly fun, albeit uneven experience. Though, as mentioned, it's absolutely a game worth experiencing once, and I truly hope you enjoy it. The game really does deserve a sequel.

victorMaje704d ago

Word for word. Exactly this. A lot of fun to be had in there. A true Mad Max game. Sequel can’t come soon enough.

gigoran8704d ago

and the fact that they originally had an American voice actor until everyone kicked up a big stink about it?

maelstromb705d ago

Honestly, Kojima would do the game justice, but given his studio's current workload, it's a bit far flung. I could much rather see Bend Studios (Days Gone dev) doing a Mad Max follow-up. I'm playing through DG right now for the first time and I see lots of similarities between the games to where imo Bend could develop an impressive MM sequel.

jznrpg704d ago

Bend does makes sense. But I’d rather they made Days Gone 2 (no multiplayer of course) as I really like the motorcycle and the hordes of zombies was a lot of fun.

VersusDMC705d ago

While i like the Mad Max game and think it's underrated...i don't know why people are mad at George Miller for not liking the game based on the IP he created. Especially since a lot of people hated it at release as well looking at that 69% metacritic.

-Foxtrot704d ago

I think the issue is the studio was told by higher ups and most likely himself to make something linear yet when they got a first look at it they didn’t like it and wanted something open world

The head guy was basically like “you’ve just hired an open world dev and forced them to do a linear game yet now you want open world which has just wasted a year of development which we could have done from the start”

I think that’s why people are p****** because of the context the lead dev at Avalanche has given us.

6 Games That Genuinely Deserve A Current-Gen Upgrade

Games such as Mad Max, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Batman: Arkham Knight desperately deserve a modern-day revisit.

thorstein743d ago

Mad Max is underrated. Such a fun game.

Cacabunga742d ago (Edited 742d ago )

RDR2 still looks astounding on PS4 Pro. i cannot imagine how it could look with a next gen upgrade.

JonTheGod742d ago (Edited 742d ago )

Probably not very different.

No idea why this article is highlighting recent beautiful graphically-advanced games and saying they need current gen makeovers. They already look better than most new releases; just compare Arkham Knight and Suicide Squad!

exputers742d ago

I see what you did there.

Yi-Long742d ago

It's obviously never gonna happen since Sony killed the game and studio, but Driveclub. Even in its current state, 10 years after release, it still puts many competitors to shame ...

Demetrius742d ago

I'm not into racing games but yeah I even looked at gameplay of that sometimes

redrum06714d ago

It's a shame they cancelled the game. Definitely the best racing game I've ever played on Playstation. Just got GT7, but it feels so slow and less arcade-y, which is to be expected of a sim racer of course, that I just enjoy it less.
Driveclub also graphically looked insanely good for its time. I wonder what a Driveclub 2 would look like for the PS5.

Demetrius742d ago

Mad max ikr! Far cry primal, it amuses me how ubisoft just left ac unity hanging, sadly most of the good staff left from rocksteady while being forced to make that abomination smh
