How Until Dawn succeeded where The Order:1886 failed

Fail a QTE in Until Dawn? You might die. Fail a QTE in The Order? You’ll just do it again.

The way the games were marketed from the moment they're announced plays a big part in expectations. Leading up to release The order previews were empty and basically felt like the developers were hiding something. When Until Dawn was announced they told us from the get go the type of game we were going to play. The Order 1886 was a good game for what it is but Until Dawn is miles better. The story, the characters were so well crafted and pushed it's story telling forward. For example, I freaking hated Emily through out the game but as soon as I got a chance to control her I some how started rooting for her during the events that take place in her play through. The Order is a new IP so I do hope that they hit it out of the park with the sequel.

I felt the same way with Drake, er, Mike. He seemed to be the cocky sleaze who took nothing seriously, and then he quickly became my favorite character.

Thatguy-3103928d ago

Exactly lol guess since he was one of the characters that we controlled the most. Plus he was basically the hero type that you usually root for in these types of movies.

Order was not good it was bad in every way from its gameplay to its story leaving its graphics thats all,qte was not that big problem for me but at the same time order was made in keeping the mind that it will be a tps with very litle qte for a mix but in the end it turned out to be a more qte than shooting yeah bht i personaly agrees with your point of until dawm so far i've played that game just for 4 hours but game is reqly interesting and is having a great feel to yeah at the same time it is having it lows but allower the game is amazing i think sony should do more advertising of this game!

Dude, you need to take your time to read through you comment and edit it if necessary. Hint - use punctuations, and your comment will be more understandable.

I love Until Dawn and would probably recommend it more than The Order. It's a smaller budget and so probably will get less marketing. But I hope word of mouth is enough to push the game - especially come haloween time.

If you are suggesting that The Order had more qte segments than actual shooting then I don't think we played the same game. Even most of the negative reviews praised the shooting mechanics, and while there may be a plethora of cutscenes and a fair bit of wandering around, the shooting far outweighed any qte sections.

The Order: 1886 succeeded its goal by dramatically increasing PS4 sales in February. Let's see if Until Dawn can accomplish the same feat in August for PS4.

Me-Time3928d ago (Edited 3928d ago )

I don't think it will. If MGS was PS4 exclusive, then yes to that. But until dawn is way out there for casuals to get into and it's not a console seller. It's an exclusive, but replayability isn't what something like Destiny did for PS4 sales.

mkis0073928d ago

It seems like word of mouth may help Until Dawn. It is kind of the ultimate party game.

uth113927d ago

I think Until Dawn is just the type of Game casuals would love

Me-Time3927d ago

It's not the type of game that most people (casuals) would consider a game. It's an interactive movie isn't it? I want it. But that isn't the point.

crazychris41243928d ago

Am I missing something with this article?? It just ends abruptly, no final thoughts. Wouldnt call The Order a failure. It sold over a million copies which is pretty good for a new IP exclusive. The devs know where they could improve the game if they got the green light for a sequel. Whenever I get my PS4 Im gonna pick this game up cheap and see for myself. But from what Ive seen and read they should open up the levels a little more, give you choices, multiple endings, more cool weapons, more monsters, bigger battles, and an arcade challenge mode (almost all single player games do it these days)

BitbyDeath3928d ago

The Order is a shooter and Until Dawn is survival horror. The Order didn't fail just the pew pew genre is getting tired compared to the Horror genre.

Rimeskeem3928d ago

My only real complaint about The Order was that it was kind of 1 and done thing (unless you didnt get the plat first round or what not)

OhMyGandhi3928d ago

Funny that both genres have been around for ages, and yet it's the survival horror game, based entirely on genre tropes that proves to be the more unique, more interesting game.

trouble_bubble3928d ago

Critically speaking, the Order scored lower than expected. But a million sold in 6 months means peeps didnt care and bought it anyways. Until Dawn might be the better game, but time will tell if it sells as well.

ArchangelMike3927d ago

I realoy hope Until Dawn sells well. My expectations were low going in, but it completely blew me away. It deserves a shot.

Imortus_san3927d ago

When the The Order was release there were no major games at sale at that time, this month and next two months are killers, so if Until Dawn moves the same number os copies, it means the game sold better.

Great month for Halloween, glad that until dawn is the PS5 version, definitely having a few beers and some friends round for that

Profchaos230d ago

What a line up silent hill 2 is a great addition
Also don't sleep on like a dragon Yakuza such a good game

Dexterio230d ago

Now we're talking! Best month for me this whole year.

Puty230d ago

I am very happy for Tekken 3

Redgrave229d ago

It's not going to get trophies, is it 😕

It's a really solid addition, but I'd love a platinum for it. Same with Soul Calibur 3 if that's really next month.

Deeeeznuuuts229d ago

Yeah, it's a real shame that some publishers still don't add trophies, I mean, even Disney do and they even update games to add them

VersusDMC229d ago

Some PS2 classics have trophies so hopefully Soul Calibur 3 has it.

And ps1 classics not having trophies is dissapointing but at least they give you the new version for free if you bought the old ps1 classic.

I missed it when games use to have a multiplayer to them.
Hope Sony revives the game at one point

KyRo370d ago

Killzone, Resistance, Uncharted, TLOU, Motorstorm. Great times. Its a shame how far they've fallen this generation

Muigi370d ago

Oh they still do…its just the whole game now 😂.

-Foxtrot370d ago

Why add multiplayer when the single player (despite enjoying it for what it was) had flaws?

You'd work out the issues with how you craft the single player then once you’ve perfected it do multiplayer after.

"Two sequels were planned for the franchise, The Order 1891 and The Order 1899. While the third game was never in development, Weerasuriya says he had planned where the story of the franchise was planned to go, if he had been able to develop the full trilogy."
...
Alas, we'll also might never get the PC version of 1886, which is currently residing in some dev's hard drive, nearly ready for a release if required.

Charal370d ago

It’s a shame we didn’t gave its chance to this franchise.
Game world was very interesting, and gameplay could have evolved to a major hit with sequels.
Not even speaking about graphics that were way ahead of their time.

Reaper22_370d ago (Edited 370d ago )

If "we" is sony, i agree. I liked the game but it was metacritic that contributed to it's death. It's a shame.

AshleeEmerson370d ago

No, we are "us," the gamers who rated it so low on Metacritic, hurting... Killing its sales. I agree it is a shame. I loved this game.

Charal370d ago

No it is not, it is us has a community which crucified this game, which is happening much too often.

CrimsonWing69370d ago (Edited 370d ago )

I think MP being co-op would’ve been awesome. Essentially, I always viewed this as Sony’s take on the Gears series.

However, it really failed to measure up to what I expected. I definitely saw the potential but there were some things that really bogged it down for me like the forced slow walking segments (which I know was to hide loading), the repetitive warehouse werewolf fights, not enough variety in enemies, oddly we fought more humans than Darkstalkers, and the stealth sections were infuriating.

One thing there’s no denying though, this damn game was a looker. Such a shame at the wasted potential.
