uh oh, I feel like the score is a bit low for what you didnt like though. If the gameplay is good and the world is good (to most) i dont think the game gets a 6.5. Based on what you said i would give it at least a 7.

But different opinions are a thing

jb2273920d ago (Edited 3920d ago )

My worry is how cool the world will actually be? It sounds like there are a couple main settlements & then an endless expanse of desert. Could be cool for a car combat focused game but for my tastes i like a proper world to explore vs. A literal sandbox devoid of much in the way of character. I may be off but I haven't seen much of an interesting environment in the trailers, just a lot of swirling sand. It works for Mad Max because there's a directed story and action to be had, but it may not keep attention for long in a game setting if the story is minimal. Loved Fury Road but as far as games go my money is on JC3 being the better of the two by a stretch.

NewMonday3920d ago (Edited 3920d ago )

ever since Avalanche started showing off Just Cause 3 a year before the release of this game I started to worry, did they phone this in and not bring in their A game?

reminds me of how Randy Pitchford and Dennis Dyack handled Aliens and X-Men

the media needs to ask questions

XBLSkull3920d ago (Edited 3920d ago )

Worthless biased review. First paragraph is about MGS5, what does MGS5 have to do with a Mad Max review? GTFO author.

Concertoine3920d ago (Edited 3920d ago )

Im not gonna say its GOTY or even good without playing it but this is obviously a middle market game which the press has been unfit to judge since around the middle of last gen. Solid games like Singularity, Metro 2033 or Alpha Protocol were also painted scores like 6.5 or 7 simply because they aren't suicidally expensive to produce like AAA games these days.

seanpitt233920d ago

Walk through guys here judge for yourself

https://m.youtube.com/watch...

For mobile take the m out if you are on PC

RavenWolfx3919d ago

I really enjoyed Alpha Protocol, but it was not a good game by any means. I can definitely understand a 6 or 7 score for it.

Magicite3920d ago

I told you guys already, MGS5 gonna overshadow Mad Max, but you gave me disagrees, now please, eat the crow.

TripC503920d ago

I'm actually hungry for some crow right now but I didn't disagree with you earlier...can I disagree with you now and still get some of that sweet sweet crow?

slinky1234563920d ago

It's pretty obvious it would over shadow it. I think many many people thought that when the release dates were announced. Doesn't mean it will be completely drowned out still. And, after 1 review we can still wait to hear more on it.

cd13920d ago

MGS doesn't overshadow any other game to me because I don't like stealthy games. I'm not saying its a bad game, just don't really do hiding. I'm sure MGS will sell more if that's what you mean?

I will wait until i've seen a number of reviews before making judgement on Mad Max.

Have you brought enough Crow for everyone?

Relientk773920d ago

What a crow, what a lovely crow

3920d ago
raWfodog3919d ago

Of course MGS5 is going to overshadow this game simply because of its pedigree but that shouldn't be the reason for a bad review (not saying that the game is/isn't bad).

A game review should be based on the game alone, not whether its coming out around the same time as some other game.

stiggs3919d ago (Edited 3919d ago )

"MGS5 gonna overshadow Mad Max"

Yeah, you really went out on a limb with that prediction. Do you have any other "outrageous" forecasts?

jb2273919d ago

@cd1

Glad I'm not the only one who can't really deal with stealth games. I always bite my tongue around here in regards to games like MGS because it seems to be the gospel of gaming for many folks. I totally respect that game and others like it, but I don't have the patience or the time for stealth so i always take the guns blazing approach, which is nearly impossible in a Metal Gear game. Tried that in the very first 10 minutes of Ground Zeroes & was swiftly killed so I turned it off.

I think TLOU was the best balance of the mechanics because it was forgiving enough and the pacing was just right to where I'd actually do a few encounters stealthy and actually have fun with it, which is huge for a gamer like me. More power to the people who can play and beat Metal Gear games, but I ain't one of em.

antz11043919d ago

Two totally different genres. Your comment is as invalid as a Nicholas Cage bird hair meme.

cd13919d ago

I know what jb227 means, he wasn't directly comparing the two. I too enjoyed TLOU as stealth wasn't the main focal point of the game.

Stealth plays a bigger role in MGS so i probably wont play it, i'm sure fans of the genre are gonna love it though.

This is avalanche studio after all. If anyone expects a proper story from mad max or just cause 3 than they will be disoppointed for sure

I know they stuck with the material and made mad max open world feel like mad max but I feel like they should have added some gaming tweaks to make the world more interesting

This has been my problem with avalanche since day one, they will give you an open world and some tools but nothing else.

The gunplay in just cause 2 was so weak, it had no story what do ever but it did give you an open world and tools for destruction

And if you expect the same in just cause 3 Tha you won't be disoppointed but if you are like me and want to see improved gunplay and better story than it won't be as much fun

Bennibop3919d ago

Have received my copy of mad max and mgs early and while the game is not as good as metal gear (which is fantastic,) it's still a lot of fun. Plays very much like batman but the fight mechanics aren't as tight. I would rate it around a 7.5 so far.

Automatic793919d ago

When are the other reviews coming you would have thought by this time it would have come out.

ginsunuva3919d ago

It's not like 6.5 and 7 are defined anywhere.

I swear everyone on this site is a teenager

Mostafeto3919d ago

I would take this review lightly though since this may be rushed. Review copies just arrived anyway so getting it out this quickly may be a bit wrong. Take this rating as a base and see how it will be evaluated by all of the people in the next week or so.

fanboysmackdown3919d ago

So now you're in the business of telling a guy who has played the game what score he should give it and you haven't played it. What world do you live in.......Bizarro?

disguy233919d ago

This is one of those reviewers that aren't major ones. just wait until IGN'S review or the score on metacritic because those usually give better reviews and understand the game better.

Meh scores so far and the fact it's so close to MGSV

Yeeeeeah I don't see this doing very well.

All that money that went into this could have been spent on something new or even Just Cause 3

MrSwankSinatra3920d ago

How could the money be used for Just Cause 3 when for one neither game is funded by Avalanche and two they're not even from the same publisher?

WB = Mad Max

Square Enix = Just Cause 3

PizzaSteve3920d ago

LOL sometimes I wish Foxtrot would take a week off from N4G.

If this game continue to get low scores, I wonder if the people that said they will get it over MGS5 will keep their word. I don't judge a game by scores because they are just opinions to me but most gamers do buy games by scores.

3920d ago
Stringerbell3920d ago (Edited 3920d ago )

@Pizzasteve

'I wonder if the people that said they will get it over MGS5 will keep their word.'

As Auntie would say 'Bust a deal face the wheel.' This game could give you the flu and I'd still buy it. I'm a Mad Max fanboy- and ever since that abysmal NES game I always hoped someone would give the Wasteland another go.

I'm not expecting this game to reinvent the wheel. I just want car chases and explosions and maybe a Lord Humongous cameo as he unleashes his dogs of war.

MysticStrummer3920d ago

"This game could give you the flu and I'd still buy it. I'm a Mad Max fanboy"

I'm a Mad Max fan as well and I was looking forward to this, but after watching a few streams I won't be buying until it gets much cheaper, if I buy it at all. I was getting MGS5 first anyway, but I wasn't impressed with what I saw of this game for the most part so this score doesn't surprise me.

WB is publishing this. Square Enix Just Cause 3. You comment makes no damn sense.

roland823920d ago

This is the only review I've seen. How can you say its getting Meh scores?

user99502793919d ago

I saw this coming a mile away. Game looks way too samey.

If you buy one Avalanche game this winter, make it Just Cause 3.

antz11043919d ago

I feel like your comment history is just personal opinion you try to pawn off as fact. There's literally like 2 reviews up for this game.

S2Killinit3920d ago (Edited 3920d ago )

I like your idea and i like how you bolded it as emphasis. I also wish someone had said that when that smear campaign was on to destroy The Order 1886 a whole year in advance of its release.

Concertoine3920d ago

...and then it turned out to actually be mediocre. Bad example.

S2Killinit3919d ago

@Concertoine
Not really. it was actually a great game. The criticism of the game was based on practically the same things used against it before it was launched. (too short; not innovative; like a movie not a game) All criticism was utterly unfair and fused with double standards. While playing it myself, I thoroughly enjoyed it. For one thing, it was the most beautiful game I had played in the current generation.

crazychris41243920d ago

Tuesday is gonna be madness for me. Playing this game after getting it for 40% off then watching Fury Road once its delivered.

Rimeskeem3920d ago

You could have gotten it for 20$ on PC

jimsl1ce3920d ago

Got if from that site, can confirm that it works

DragonKing813920d ago

@Vega Thanks bro appreciate it

mopground3919d ago

dang i forgot about cdkeys! i bought max through green man gaming. got me the 40% off but this woulda saved me another 15 shooot!

Mad Max Remains Criminally Underrated 9 Years Later

The Mad Max game, released in 2015 by Avalance Studio has turned 9 years old; is one of the most underrated games of recent times.

tech4gamers.com
thorstein629d ago

Yes it is. My only complaint with the game was one of the trophies tied to the time trials. I just thought it was tedious to try to go after it.

Other than that it was worth every penny.

SDuck629d ago

There's an unobtainable achievement tied to server gimmicks since the servers were shut down (for pc players, you can just get all other achievements and grab the save file with that achievement from nexusmod), but man do I love this game.
After Furiosa, I decided to go back and rewatch the original 3 movies and recognizing so many things on Mad Max 2 from the game made me appreciate the game even more!

RhinoGamer88629d ago

Agreed, so is Days Gone... shame.

ChasterMies629d ago

Oof no. It’s appropriately if not overrated.

ZeekQuattro629d ago

I still play it from time to time. Sucks it never took off as I remember looking forward to a possible sequel. Silly me.

Demetrius629d ago

On my 2nd playthrough and I still adore the vibe it gives

AAWELLS09628d ago

It def has a vibe to it and I agree its perfect for the game. Its such a shame it didnt get a sequel as I think it would've been their magnum opus.

Sorry George Miller, but you’re wrong about the Mad Max game

George Miller expressed dismay toward the 2015 Mad Max game recently, but Avalanche Studios' take on the lore is still so good to this day.

lelo2play729d ago

Mad Max is a good game... George Miller should STFU.

Old_Scout728d ago

He didn't say it wasn't good. Maybe you should take your own advice and look past the articles misleading headline. Here's the actual quote. “wasn’t as good as we wanted it to, it wasn’t in our hands.” That is all he said about it.

S2Killinit728d ago (Edited 728d ago )

In my opinion the guy himself Is pretty mediocre, so I dont like how he talks as if he’s something special. I dont think he would know a good game if it hit him in the face.

StormSnooper728d ago (Edited 728d ago )

If George Miller had good taste he wouldn’t be wearing those ridiculous glasses.

-Foxtrot729d ago

I think the funny thing is if Kojima made a Mad Max game it would be so trippy and "out there" I don't think it would feel like Mad Max by the time he's done with it. This is why he's better off with original new IPs.

Kojima seems like a buzz word these film directors use because he's probably the only big name they've heard from the gaming industry.

Wretchedstain729d ago

Article is correct in my opinion, Miller is wrong. That Death Stranding II trailer is bonkers, looking forward to that in itself.

And I agree, unless Mr Kojima wants to change his tune, or laughably, be told what to do, you're right, it wouldn't be Mad Max or close.

porkChop729d ago

Yup, Kojima really doesn't suit Mad Max. Avalanche did a great job though. It looked, felt, and played like what I'd expect from a Mad Max game. I really enjoyed my time with it, and the sand storms were handled incredibly well.

jznrpg728d ago

I think Kojima could definitely make a great Mad Max game.

SubtilizZer728d ago

I disagree… I don’t want to see Kojima do Mad Max or whatever… But I disagree with your take. Kojima is first a huge fan of film. I think saying he wouldn’t be able to stick to the lore of the world that was built is kinda crazy.

I’m sure he would be able to stick to the creative confines of the source material fairly well. Chances are he’s a huge fan.

I’m sure he’s a bit of a”buzzword” sure but I’m willing to bet it’s mutual respect for his work as well.

TheGamingHounds729d ago

I never played it but the recent buzz around Mad Max has piqued my interest. Will check it out this year for sure

maelstromb729d ago (Edited 729d ago )

MM is not a perfect game by any means as it was held back by lots of repetitious, standard open-world copy and paste missions, but the devs SO perfectly captured the world, atmosphere, lore and brutality. It also just so happens to boast one of THE best photo modes out there and some of the most impressive explosions I've ever seen in a game to date. The car combat is of course another impressive standout, both vicious and fun. MM is a game which I have revisited multiple times since its release, and now having just seen Furiosa, I can feel it calling me back again.

There's a ton to love there, but I think you'll pickup on the areas where the devs struggled likely due to reigning in the scope, budget and time constraints, leading to an incredibly fun, albeit uneven experience. Though, as mentioned, it's absolutely a game worth experiencing once, and I truly hope you enjoy it. The game really does deserve a sequel.

victorMaje729d ago

Word for word. Exactly this. A lot of fun to be had in there. A true Mad Max game. Sequel can’t come soon enough.

gigoran8728d ago

and the fact that they originally had an American voice actor until everyone kicked up a big stink about it?

maelstromb729d ago

Honestly, Kojima would do the game justice, but given his studio's current workload, it's a bit far flung. I could much rather see Bend Studios (Days Gone dev) doing a Mad Max follow-up. I'm playing through DG right now for the first time and I see lots of similarities between the games to where imo Bend could develop an impressive MM sequel.

jznrpg728d ago

Bend does makes sense. But I’d rather they made Days Gone 2 (no multiplayer of course) as I really like the motorcycle and the hordes of zombies was a lot of fun.

VersusDMC729d ago

While i like the Mad Max game and think it's underrated...i don't know why people are mad at George Miller for not liking the game based on the IP he created. Especially since a lot of people hated it at release as well looking at that 69% metacritic.

-Foxtrot729d ago

I think the issue is the studio was told by higher ups and most likely himself to make something linear yet when they got a first look at it they didn’t like it and wanted something open world

The head guy was basically like “you’ve just hired an open world dev and forced them to do a linear game yet now you want open world which has just wasted a year of development which we could have done from the start”

I think that’s why people are p****** because of the context the lead dev at Avalanche has given us.

6 Games That Genuinely Deserve A Current-Gen Upgrade

Games such as Mad Max, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Batman: Arkham Knight desperately deserve a modern-day revisit.

thorstein767d ago

Mad Max is underrated. Such a fun game.

Cacabunga767d ago (Edited 767d ago )

RDR2 still looks astounding on PS4 Pro. i cannot imagine how it could look with a next gen upgrade.

JonTheGod766d ago (Edited 766d ago )

Probably not very different.

No idea why this article is highlighting recent beautiful graphically-advanced games and saying they need current gen makeovers. They already look better than most new releases; just compare Arkham Knight and Suicide Squad!

exputers766d ago

I see what you did there.

Yi-Long766d ago

It's obviously never gonna happen since Sony killed the game and studio, but Driveclub. Even in its current state, 10 years after release, it still puts many competitors to shame ...

Demetrius766d ago

I'm not into racing games but yeah I even looked at gameplay of that sometimes

redrum06739d ago

It's a shame they cancelled the game. Definitely the best racing game I've ever played on Playstation. Just got GT7, but it feels so slow and less arcade-y, which is to be expected of a sim racer of course, that I just enjoy it less.
Driveclub also graphically looked insanely good for its time. I wonder what a Driveclub 2 would look like for the PS5.

Demetrius766d ago

Mad max ikr! Far cry primal, it amuses me how ubisoft just left ac unity hanging, sadly most of the good staff left from rocksteady while being forced to make that abomination smh
