Digital Foundry: Hands-on with Metal Gear Solid 5

DF "If you're still on the fence, it's fair to say Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is a worthwhile purchase on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One."

Great writeup. The almost constant 60fps on both platforms are great news. Can't wait for my PC version though.

gangsta_red3918d ago

It is interesting that the Xbox One version holds a higher frame rate in some areas. It has to be because of the lower resolution that it's able to keep a higher frame rate for those parts.

It's going to be a very, very busy holiday year.

I may have to put this on hold though, Fallout 4 demands my full attention.

Where? In cut-scenes? Those are unplayable.

@septic :

Massive improvement over Ground Zeroes and even superior fps for the x1 in some

1fps is superior? Well, if you count cut-scenes...

gangsta_red3918d ago

Where?

Does it matter, it still holds a higher frame rate in those areas. Whether it's playable or not is irrelevant.

Still looks great though.

Gazondaily3918d ago

@butcher

Relax

You missed the parts where I said it was pretty unnoticeable?

Rookie_Monster3918d ago (Edited 3918d ago )

Butcher,

Clam down man.

No one is downplaying anything but the fact remains the XB1 does hold an edge on FPS is what these digital foundry articles are for...regardless of where it appears or how minor it is. No need to have a panic attack. I am sure all versions will be great. LMAO

GusBricker3918d ago

Tell that to gamers who had framerate drops on cutscenes in Witcher 3.

It was so damn annoying.

F0XHOUND3918d ago

From memory, Xbox usually has higher fps doesn't it? Likely as you say, due to the resolution.

lameguy3918d ago

@butchertroll - Considering Metal Gear's typically have _hours_ worth of cut scenes, I'd say they are pretty important for this game at least :)

But yeah, most likely it's the lower resolution helping to a large extent.

breakpad3918d ago (Edited 3918d ago )

as usual Eurogamer try to justify the XO version and hides its inferiority ...all i say look the up-close comparison screen on Kazuhira ...PS4 has better colors , better shadows , better shadow transition, better clarity...but lame Eurogame having on purpose an intermediate picture where textures havent streamed completely for PS4 , and points immediately the little detail ...lame and biased Digital Foundry

Allsystemgamer3918d ago

It states in the article it's due to the VSYNC.

Yep. Slightly better AF also. Btw. someone on GAF noticed on that Kaz screenshot that XO version ( even with PS4's texture streaming problems in that scene ) has lack of subsurface scattering.

Magicite3918d ago

MGS5 will get GOTY this year, you cant skip it.

Eonjay3918d ago

DF:

"Accepting 60fps as the norm, there are sporadic, one-off dips on both platforms. Here we see PS4 slipping a frame as we draw close to a target location. The cause isn't entirely clear, as the renderer provably handles more intensive scenes at a perfect 60fps - though PS4 and Xbox One are equally prone to this light hiccupping."

So, whats all of this now. Are you guys really going to argue over 1fps?

They even stress over and over that each drop is so rare and not well explained.

gangsta_red3918d ago

@Magicite

I don't know about that, Fallout 4 is going to take the GOTY crown.

MGSV will be the height of all things bad a** but Fallout 4 will be nothing short of epicness.

@Eonjay
Lol, no one is arguing. You guys are making it a bigger deal than it is.

Eonjay3918d ago

@gangsta_red

You really did start this by reaching really hard for an advantage to give to the Xbox One. There is nothing to defend here because they both run damn near flawlessly. And you know it.

RedDeadLB3918d ago

The reason the PS4 version hits 30fps is because of the double-buffered vsync, which obviously isn't used in the Xbox One version.

When framerate drops below 60 in such cases, vsync locks the framerate at the next step - 30fps. Without the double buffered vsync, the PS4 would probably/possibly match the Xbox One performance in such demanding cases.

Gazondaily3918d ago

@eonjay
"You really did start this by reaching really hard for an advantage to give to the Xbox One."

No he didn't. He just mentioned a fact. The game runs sub 1080p on xbox. There. We can all get along now?

ABizzel13918d ago (Edited 3918d ago )

It's not interesting really, more than likely there's something wrong with the PS4's V-sync not resolution. Something is forcing the PS4 version to drop to the nearest Hz (30 / 60) when it comes to cutscenes, meanwhile the XBO version seems to not have the V-Sync issue on cutscenes and more than likely it's turned off completely (which could have been the change in patch 1.01 that's already on XBO).

It's a common issue on PC games as well, if your fps drops too much below the target V-Sync you drop down to the nearest half, so while it aims for 60fps, if it drops to 55 V-sync will pull it down to 30fps. The XBO version more than likely doesn't have V-sync on for cutscenes. Also Gameplay would have a greater effect on fps than cutscenes, so if they're practically the same in gameplay then they should have been the same in cutscenes as well minus patchable technical issues such as the texture streaming on the forehead, and more than likely V-sync.

The good news is that both games are at a very stable 60fps in gameplay. Kudos Kojima.

*Edit

As a matter of face it says that in cutscenes the PS4 version uses a double buffer V-sync, so I'm guessing the XBO doesn't use it at all or it too would drop down to 30fps instead of the 48fps / 50fps shown there.

"Almost every cut-scene in The Phantom Pain holds a solid 60fps, but on the rare occasion that they do drop, it's a hard downward lurch. In these cases, a double-buffered v-sync locks PS4 to the 30fps line, and Xbox One tends to better maintain its composure at around 50fps."

gangsta_red3918d ago (Edited 3918d ago )

@Eonjay

"You really did start this by reaching really hard for an advantage to give to the Xbox One."

Lmao! Wow...Yea, I'm reaching, really, really reaching hard by stating what's actually in the article. Even by saying the Xbox One has a lower resolution.

"There is nothing to defend here because they both run damn near flawlessly. And you know it."

Who is attacking though? And where did I even say that one runs better than the other?

You are turning this into something else. Which is funny because you're the only one here arguing this because you THINK someone is giving some advantage over the PS4.

triple_c3918d ago

And I quote:

"Just one minor point to address before we go on. Currently, Xbox One has a 1.01 patch available, while PlayStation 4 does not. Conceivably, further improvements may arrive."

I think we should all wait for them to do a FAIR analysis test when the PS4 gets patched before we start saying 1 version has better fps than another version. Idk why they would run a test with 1 version patched and the other not patched in the 1st place. It just doesn't make sense to me.

3918d ago
gfk3423918d ago

@user1049

Stop trolling the thread!

During gameplay, both run at a steady 60 fps, PS4 having an edge on graphics (44% more pixels, better AF).

The drops in fps appear ONLY in the cut-scenes and this is due to the implementation of double v-sync.

IMO, they used this technic in order to avoid judger. Namely, the vast majority of TVs have a refresh rate of 60hz. Thus, no judger will arise if the source plays at 60fps, 30 fps or even 20 fps.

In the case of X1 the 50fps cut-scenes will result in judger on your TV.

showtimefolks3918d ago

Lameguy

You are right for past mgs games but mgs 5 is 90% gameplay and 10% cutscenes. In the past it was maybe 50-50 or 60-40 favoring cutscenes

Gangsta

I doubt that, mgs 5 is very likely game of year. Fallout 4 is from Bethesda so it will launch with bugs and glitches. I am probably the biggest fallout fan but even I think mgs 5 will win GOTY

I do hope for a much smoother launch for fallout 4 on all platforms. No one's wins when a game launches with bugs or glitches

Fox hound

Actually the list is quite bigger on ps4 of the games that have higher frame rates than Xbox one.

I am on my tab otherwise I would have posted the link.

Whether you are playing on pc, ps4 or Xbox one just enjoy the game

We have waited 5 years for mgs 5 and this is very likely kojima's last mgs game. So less arguing and more enjoying

Heyxyz3918d ago

Why do you need to put this on hold? Fallout 4 is over 2 months away, so you should have plenty of time to complete this.

gangsta_red3918d ago

@heyxyz
I am still working on Witcher 3, I still have the new Batman game that I haven't even touched yet. An open world MGS game sounds just as life draining as my current catalog of games. With work, kids and life there is no way I can finish MGS in time for Fallout 4.

@showtime
I know everyone brings up bugs and glitches but I think it's because Bethesda was making way to ambitious games for the hardware they were releasing games on. With these new more powerful consoles I think the woes of Fallout pasts will be corrected.

freshslicepizza3918d ago

mcicrosoft continues to show their expertise in software as the xbox one closes the gap on the ps4 in performance. it will never be as powerful due to the parts inside but they have to be commended for their hard work making it easier for developers.

pyroxxx3918d ago (Edited 3918d ago )

It is also missing subsurface scattering in those cutscenes,.. and probably more and have you noticed it runs at lower resolution to begin with,.. PS4 version looks better anyway you put it

MysticStrummer3918d ago (Edited 3918d ago )

"Currently, Xbox One has a 1.01 patch available, while PlayStation 4 does not."

…which makes this comparison sort of pointless.

Edit : I just skimmed over the top paragraphs during my initial read and didn't see the part about XB1 performance not being changed by the patch, so I retract. If performance didn't change I'm not sure why they even thought the patch was worth noting.

u4one3917d ago (Edited 3917d ago )

its because it has a slightly better cpu setup. this was this case with grand theft auto as well and its at 1080p on x1. ps4 has a little more graphical power, x1 has a little more cpu power.

Massive improvement over Ground Zeroes and even superior fps for the x1 in some tiny (pretty unnoticeable) bits.

Both versions look great but PS4 for me. Le trophies! Unless i can get an early copy, then whatever platform falafels me best.

gamer11383918d ago

I wouldn't say a Game series known for it's loooong cutscenes is going to be a tiny bit IF all cutscenes have a FPS gap of 18-20fps in favour of X1. Lets hope a day one patch clears up the PS4. If I remember GZ was locked 60fps all the way through on PS4.

gfk3423918d ago

@gamer1138

Well, watching looking cut-scenes at 50fps will result in judger on the TV screen.

The majority of TVs have a 60hz refresh rate. To avoid judger the source (game, movie, cut-scene) has to run at 60fps, 30 fps or even 20 fps.

Running a movie, for example, at 50fps on a 60hz TV will result in judger.

This is the reason why the PS4 has the double vsync for cut-scenes (drops AUTOMATICALLY to 30 fps), in order to avoid judger.

So, have fun watching the cut-scenes on X1 with all the judger.

SuicideKing3918d ago

I'm torn, I probably care more about achievements then trophies because I have a competition going with a buddy. But I am a sucker for the better resolution...

AndrewLB3918d ago

@gfk342

You don't know what you're talking about. You're making an assumption that Xbox One is using single-buffering which isn't the case here. Xbone is using triple-buffering which is vastly superior to double because it doesn't get take a frame-rate hit, nor does it have as much input lag... all while keeping everything nice and smooth.

The lack of triple buffering in The Witcher 3 on PS4 was a common complaint for these same reasons. Does anyone know if they ever added it for PS4?

I have my pc version reserved already. For consoles take your pick, both offer 60 fps for gameplay with cut-scene dips. distinguishing the two, one offers 1080p with harder cut-scene dips during stressing moments. The other offers 900p with lighter dips on stressing moments.

Paleblood3918d ago

My PS4 is ready!

Photo mode for this game would be awesome.

Gamist2dot03918d ago

If they keep track of photos taken of Quiet, I bet it'll be by the millions.

Whitey2k3918d ago

Besides ain't xbox on patch 1.01 for improvements ps4 ain't had a patch according to DF

gamer11383918d ago

Fifth paragraph DF say they've tested the X1 version pre and post patch and they're the same.

I don’t think I’ve ever quite experienced an unfinished game that was slapped together with duct tape and construction paper to be sold as a finished product, basically making you replay the same missions and include a story that clearly was missing so much of the plot, like I did with this game.

I’m actually shocked that it doesn’t get calls out for this more.

It did. But the gameplay loop is still pretty good.

CoPilot: Gaming Chat is an amazing revelation - A true gamer friend at your side

CG writes: In this video, we take Microsoft's Copilot for a spin and talk about gaming and AI influences, and the implications of that. We talked about a possible Metal Gear Solid V remaster, Deus Ex remaster, Hitman Blood-Money mission, and more. Imagine trying to talk gaming with non-gaming friends in real-life and after 5 seconds, they switch off and possibly yawn. Well, CoPilot isn't like that, instead it's like talking to a like-minded gaming fan who is totally on your level. The public version of CoPilot released in Feb 2023 and already it's become almost indistinguishable from a real person.

Metal Gear Solid 5, Nearly After A Decade, Is Still A Timeless Classic

The Metal Gear series, led by Kojima, pioneered the stealth genre, creating a masterclass in storytelling and gameplay.

SimpleSlave713d ago (Edited 713d ago )

No. But MGS5: Ground Zeroes might actually be one of the greatest Game Demo ever, if not the best.

xHeavYx713d ago

I know a lot of people didn't, but I actually liked that story twist at the end. The game was fun and all, but I wouldn't call it a timeless classic.

Cacabunga712d ago

Metal Gear legend stopped with number 4.
MGS5 needed a year or 2 more of development to be maybe among the classics.. it was clearly rushed, especially at the end. The story teaches us absolutely nothing new.

just_looken713d ago

A demo is free that was a $40 cry for help as later we would know konami did not want to fun hideo and his team anymore that is why we got the unfinished phantom pain.

-Foxtrot713d ago (Edited 713d ago )

Meh

Great stealth gameplay but the game was just average.

Bland open world that felt lifeless, the story felt shoehorned in, unfinished story etc. The whole thing was just average to me compared to the other main titled games.

I would have rather preferred it if they kept Ground Zeroes for the main game as the opening and the rest of the game turns into a Metal Gear 1 & 2 remake to bring things full circle.

just_looken713d ago

If you dig around they had old behind trhe scenes of phantom pain vids and books wrote around the time.

Before funding was puled the main idea was to keep peace walker coop it was in the games early builds and that end game were your building your base that was suppose to be metal gear one.

You as the fake big boss was going to make your own metal gear one map aka your base (outer heaven) then me as sold snake use the mode that is in the game invade/defeat the base even fight your current version of metal gear that was in the game but not finished.

So your idea was on the table bit got canned.

CrimsonWing69713d ago (Edited 713d ago )

Like hell it is. That was the first time I became aware of being sold an unfinished game and was blown away about blind fanboys saying it was some perfect game.

Yea, the first few chapters were great until they do that thing halfway and make you replay all the missions again. Then little things like capturing animals but only seeing a JPEG unlike 3 where everything was modeled out. Areas were massive, desolate, and boring to look at.

Game was a massive let down for me and the potential was so high for it. Honestly, this was one of the most disappointing games I ever played. What’s worse is it starts off brilliant. You literally play through until you get to the point where you could tell they just stopped developing and then quickly used glue and construction paper to “finish” it and then sold it. Quite frankly, that’s insulting to consumers and fans.

Inverno713d ago

People have selective memory. This game had huge drama attached to it, what Konami did to Kojima and this game was horrible. Now they praise Konami cause they revived Silent Hill, even though SH looks half arsed too.

CrimsonWing69713d ago

I dunno if they’re getting much praise after the Silent Hill 2 debacle. Makes me scared sh*tless for the MGS 3 Remake…

Michiel1989712d ago

I don't wanna defend konami, but Kojima had 7 years to make the game, it's not that weird for a publisher to expect a game to be finished in that amount of time.

Also no one is praising konami from what I've seen, they're just excited that a Silent Hill game is releasing

CrimsonWing69711d ago (Edited 711d ago )

@Michiel1989

You’re absolutely correct. Look, the dude is a visionary and has brought us some incredible games, but he constantly would go over budget and could never stick to a deadline. I don’t know if people remember the MGS 4 trailers but it became a joke when you’d see a release date and then they crossed it out in the next trailer to give another.

What a lot of people don’t know is there’s a certain amount of money given for development and marketing. When you go over the budget and add additional marketing over the deadline it isn’t cheap. MGS GZ and V were laughable to me for the amount of time he had to develop them and he spent even more time on the engine that wasn’t anything revolutionary to me. I mean, GZ was nothing more than a demo and they released that art like $40 I think, probably to further help fund V. He then spent money for Kiefer Sutherland who did nothing for the character, which I think Kojima just wanted because he’s a fan.

Konami just had enough and said this is the deadline and you’re done after this. It’s business, but fans took it personal. I mean look at this Overdose game he’s been doing.,, like when is that ever coming out?

Michiel1989711d ago

I kind of forgot about overdose but yeah exactly my thoughts. He has made some of the best games out there and definitely deserves time to create his new masterpiece, but it's not a bottomless well.

This is pure speculation but I imagine he got around 4 years to make the game excluding pre-production. If after those 4 years the game is nowhere near being done, the relationship will be strained between them one way or another.

about the konami being praised thing, if let's say blizzard announces world of warcraft 2 today I'll be excited as hell for the game, but that doesn't mean my opinion of blizzard changes only a tiny bit cause they're still trash.

Yeah, it was the only MGS I didn't play and this is coming from someone who got back into gaming after skipping a generation due to MGS4 back in 2008. It just seems to be the complete opposite of the MGS I always knew and loved (1-4).

JEECE713d ago

Yes and no. In many ways in was a great game; there's a very strong argument that it has the best gameplay of any MGS game, and that it is one of the more interesting open world "playgrounds" we have gotten, in terms of how the world operates. But as an MGS narrative, it is pretty far down the list, for many reasons.

Storm23713d ago

I don't think there is any argument. The gameplay was incredible. But yeah...disappointed in the rest. Could have been incredible but...well...we all know what happened...

JEECE711d ago

I don't think there is much of one either but apparently some people found the world very boring compared to the more linear structures of other entries so I didn't make a definitive statement in order to acknowledge the outliers.

DarXyde712d ago

The thing about Metal Gear Solid is that the narrative is what determines which is your favorite because the gameplay had ALWAYS improved with every mainline entry. It's amazing.

If it was gameplay, we'd all say The Phantom Pain, but the story is what truly sets them apart.

For me, that's Snake Eater, which is also my favorite game of all time.

JEECE711d ago

That's my favorite too, particularly if we are talking about the subsistence version with camera control.

Fishy Fingers713d ago

For me, best gameplay, worst, everything else.

Storm23713d ago

Yeah...gameplay was so damn good.
