Sony Shutting Down Until Dawn Twitch Archives

Sony has disabled archiving for PS4 Share broadcasts of newly released survival horror title Until Dawn, streaming service Twitch has confirmed.

Genuine-User3937d ago

Might have to wait for Sony to comment on this.

XBLSkull3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

Because this is a movie basically, not a game. You'll get the same experience watching it as you would actually playing it. If you just watch it on twitch Sony doesn't get a sale and doesn't make money.

TwoForce3937d ago Show
GTgamer3937d ago

@Xblskull well this game is just like walking dead which won *GAME OF THE YEAR* so please tell me why until Dawn isn't considered game but walking Dead Is? Bruhhhhhhhhh your reaching is out of this world games like grim fandango/Monkey island where it's more about the story and not gameplay gets praised but anytime Sony makes games like Until Dawn,Heavy Rain,Beyond two Souls you guys scream those aren't games even tho their no different from those other games. Soooooooooo let's cut the BS thank you very much and could yall stop coming talking down about a game you don't own or have any interest in getting you just sound sad like yall really making it seem like having these genres of games affects your life -_-.

XBLSkull3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

I was just answering the mans question, don't need to get offended guys.

I don't consider any telltale stuff to be games either. I'm a huge Walking Dead fan, got all the comics and love the show but that telltale game was a snoozefest, played all of season 1 and found no reason to do season 2.

zeuanimals3937d ago

@XBLskull:

Your interpretation of what a "game" is doesn't actually define what it is if the gaming industry as a whole doesn't define it in the same way since we've seen interactive "movies" as you call them win GOTY. You can say "I don't like it" but that doesn't mean it isn't a valid option.

Bewareofsasquatchh3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

it's obvious, this game is more like a movie, any interactions the player has with the characters are just quick time events, sony knows that people can just watch the play throughs and not buy the game

@XBLSkull - "You'll get the same experience watching it as you would actually playing it. If you just watch it on twitch Sony doesn't get a sale and doesn't make money."

Wrong, and wrong.

I played through the game, yes it is a game, and enjoyed the hell out of getting "my" official end to the story. Now I'm enjoying going through it again making different choices as much as possible (there are so many sometimes I forget what I chose the first time). You tell me which horror movie lets you decide what to do with a machete at a particular moment, then later when that machete is needed again it may or may not be available depending on what you chose before. You tell me which horror movie lets you tell a character to hide or run from the killer, and whether they live or die could hang on that one decision? Hell the fact that you get a particular decision to make at a particular moment is sometimes dictated by some other decision you made in a previous chapter. That's not a movie, but I think you know that.

Last night I watched a girl play the game on Twitch and it was a very different experience. She was obviously nervous/scared as she explored (I can't recall ever roaming through a movie looking for clues, can you?). When jump scares would happen she'd scream and curse. When big revelations would happen her eyes would open wide and she'd say something like "Oh my god! What the hell?". It was very entertaining, but different from playing the game because I wasn't the one doing the exploring/deciding. Watching her made me wish I had turned on my camera for my first play through, because there's an option in the menu for the camera to catch your reactions when things happen. I know I jumped a lot but it would be funny to see my facial expressions.

Archiving is disabled, not streaming, so your second point is just ridiculous. There are hundreds of people streaming it right now.

"I don't consider any telltale stuff to be games either"

You're wrong a lot. We know.

Everyone leave XBLSKull alone, he's obviously just salty that there's an article talking about a PS4 exclusive when it should be discussing the awesomeness of the Crackdown demo. Can't have too many of those articles.

Because they want people to buy the game instead of watching someone else beat it on twitch, it's what happens when games try to be movies, the same thing happened with The Order: 1886, intelligent consumers aren't willing to fork out $60 dollars for a cinematic experience but might still be curious to see how the story will unfold, some people might see this comment as trolling but I assure you it's actually common sense, try to distinguish between the two, it will get you places.

Genuine-User3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

Your argument would make sense if Twitch streams and Youtube Walkthrough videos for Until Dawn were also shutting down; which they aren't.

"intelligent consumers aren't willing to fork out $60 dollars for a cinematic experience"

Are you jesting? Why on earth are people agreeing with your ridiculous generalization and baseless assumption.

Tonykid3937d ago

tbh streamers who just show the entire game should be shut down or at lease not make any money from recording it. Nowadays streamers can make money or break even on a game purchase by just streaming their game sessions. How would you like it some guy made money of your creation?

Jalva3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

@Genuine_User

Sony has no control over what is broadcasted on Twitch streams and Youtube, however they are disabling the ability for Until Dawn to be shared to the PS4 using share play so that the people who actually have a PS4 and might still buy the game won't be deterred from doing so as easily, also I don't care how many agrees or disagrees I get from this incredibly biased site, I know what I say is correct and that's all that matters to me.

@GTgamer

The thing is, many people don't care about seeing all the outcomes, they just want to see how the story can play out and then they're satisfied, and the difference between movie games and other single player games is that they have gameplay mechanics, you know, the main reason people buy games, so that they can play them, not watch them and push a button here and there to choose what outcome they want to see.

GTgamer3937d ago

The game has multiple outcomes so unless someone is willing to watch it over and over to see all then I don't get it but tbh it has nothing to do with being a cinematic experience because I can do a walk-through of any single player game and spoil it for you but until Dawn has multiple ways to go about the story so my experience and yours can't be the same which is a big encentive to get the game. So idk why Sony pulled it but I love the game I got really pissed when my favorite character died because I triedddddd to be a nice guy ahwell I got a couple more playthroughs to go so im getting my moneys worth.

shammgod3937d ago

I made my decision to buy the game after watching said stream

morganfell3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

Intelligent consumers aren't willing to fork out $60 for a cinematic experience? So you are saying anyone that purchases this game or The Order lack intelligence. Troll much?

How can you claim what you say is correct when you make such a blatantly erred statement? You can't and you aren't.

Genuine-User3937d ago

@Jalva

You couldn't be more wrong.

Ever heard of YouTube Content ID claim?

3937d ago
Jaqen_Hghar3937d ago

except it's not the same playing as watching. A man gets more out of these types of games than ones that rely on MP which gets boring once you play the maps a couple times.

Sevir3937d ago

Jalva, you have got to be on some sort of brain numbing narcotic to say such a statement... And somehow you only seem to be levying such a remark towards Sony.... Tell Tale Games has been doing these types of games and people love them and score them accordingly, The Walking Dead, Tales from the Borderlands and Game of Thrones from TellTale Games ALL follow the exact formula as Beyond: Two Souls, Heavy Rain and Until Dawn. And they Sell well to merit New entries in their series...

I don't know how you can even loop A 3rd Person Shooter into the same genre as Heavy Rain and Until Dawn?

Please just shut your driveling pie hole and go back to waiting till something worth wild to play releases on XBO...

fermcr3937d ago

@Jalva

Before reading your comment, I was thinking the same thing.

nRicosS3937d ago

"intelligent consumers aren't willing to fork out $60 dollars for a cinematic experience"

IMHO, your post doesn't seem intelligent, at least for me.

Josuey3937d ago

Your 2 bubbles make me question if your a stealth troll. Until dawn is a cinematic experience but there a lot of replayability.
$60 is a good price given the production value, content etc. Game has also gotten great reviews.

Bathyj3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

Yeah, theres a big shock. Jalva and fermcr agree. Its almost like theyre the same troll. If its against Sony you guys always agree.

OT
For a game that is about the experiencing shocks and surprises why would you want you ruin it with a video?

I must admit, I looked at a stream last night just to see the graphics and the guy playing complained that HE watched a stream already and he knew that switch was a trap so he wasnt going to do it. Then he didnt want to touch anything because he thought they were all traps. Is that the spirit this game should be played in?

Watching is not the same as playing, any real gamer knows that. Your reaching trying to imply this is some coverup because the quality is lacking and Sony dont want us to know, but everyone already knows this game is exceeding expectations. I'll spell it out for you, that means the game is BETTER than everyone thought it was going to be, not worse.

The fun in this game comes from experiencing it for yourself. Watching video ruins that. Thats why. Your reasoning is feeble, and insisting youre correct just because you say you are correct is really typical head in the sand behaviour.

I honestly think youre just bitter because we were all expecting this game to get crucified by the reviewers but theyre all saying its great.

Eonjay3937d ago

This game is really taking off. Its quite impressive. I never imagined it would be this successful.

StrayaKNT3937d ago

100% agree my friend finished it in 6 hours and told me it wasn't worth the money at all. Companies shouldn't charge full price for a game like this 15$ would be perfect and even then its still too much for a game you can finish in a day.

Thatguy-3103937d ago

People like you fail to realize that watching someone play a game and playing it yourself is a whole different experience. Individuals might watch a stream and if they see what they like they run out and buy it because they want to experience it themselves. Games like these immerse the player the most because he chooses how to play. When you watch play throughs you watch others enjoy the game.

morganfell3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

"100% agree my friend..."

My friend. The secret friend...

Looks at post history. Ha ha ha ha ha. Yeah, you seem legit...

Do you not realize how you look? People such as yourself are a laugh. Are you really so oblivious to your own past? Do you think for a second anyone with half a brain cell believes the slightest thing you have to say concerning Sony or a Sony product?

alabtrosMyster3937d ago

For the order it was like a hot potatoe game... I got it used for 40$ a few days after release... bought it sold it 35 a few days later... I wonder how low it may be by now?

I find that the environments were too closed, the enemies really uninteresting to fight and there was almost zero interaction with any objects during the quest (you know, like many games, vases, tables, chairs and other objects just bolted really hard on the ground)... and well the story was really really poor :-/

It's hard to love this game, I really wonder how some people came to appreciate it... it's really much lower than what Sony got us used to last gen.

christian hour3937d ago

Seeing these games on twitch/etc always makes me want to play them more, so I can see how differently my playthrough would be. This may just be an oversight on their end more so than anything (or not, no way to know until we hear more), until dawn has had some rather strange launch issues here in uk/ireland, people couldn't pre-download until yesterday for example due to an oversight in the store listing(not the usual ce-37700-7 bug, so the usual fix didnt work.)

Spoilers I suppose. Maybe Sony doesn't want others to ruin your first time experience with the game?

But if you go to Twitch and specifically look for Until Dawn well then you're asking for it right?

Who knows...

ziggurcat3937d ago

yeah, if you're going on twitch to watch someone stream the game, you're probably not all that concerned about spoilers.

Timesplitter143937d ago

My guess is it's because the game relies heavily on the story/scenario and people might think it's useless to buy it if they can just watch others play it

MysticStrummer3937d ago

But they can still watch others play it...

xXSilentXx3937d ago

Partnership with Youtube gaming?

3937d ago
S2Killinit3937d ago

I'm guessing because the game's allure is based on surprising you with twists and turns. It kind of beats the point if there are tons of videos of it out there. I personally agree with the move.

Blaze9293937d ago

makes sense Sony - send your title out to die then also make sure no one can share the experience to help sales. Perfect sense.

What if konami pulled videos down? I know its not 100% the same but such actions can effect the future of online videos archives

WowSoChill3937d ago

Not letting people use their product how they want is sorta a stab if you ask me

scark923937d ago

How is this effecting the 'Players'?

DragonDDark3937d ago

Again , i think its because the game isn't released i Uk and Ireland. 28th.

Toiletsteak3937d ago

I don't see why that matters, if people want to watch it and ruin it for themselves let them.

TheLoCoRaven3937d ago

This is so people buy the game instead of just watching someone's lets play. For an interactive movie type of game this is probably needed for a few months until sales slow down. They're not banning people from streaming. Alright, bring on the hate. ha!

WowSoChill3937d ago

Maybe if they Game had some decent actual Gameplay that people wanted to experience then they wouldn't have to do this instead of making the Game a movie

kaizokuspy3937d ago

Chill out man. The game has gameplay. If exploration, brutal choice making that does alter the narrative in a fun way, and quick time events that actually matter isn't your thing, then this isn't for you. However, I do like the actual gameplay and would gladly buy any other $60 game made by thsee devs. I've been playing this with my wife. She loves it and I love it. There are millions of other ps4 owners who are like me and my wife. We enjoy this type of game as a couple. So again, not for you, quit whining about gameplay as clearly this games target audience isn't you, at all.

Sy_Wolf3937d ago

There are so many potential endings though, it's not realistic to expect people to play the game enough times to see everything.

Athlon10141d ago (Edited 41d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit40d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg40d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10140d ago (Edited 40d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14940d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle53d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker54d ago (Edited 54d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit53d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog54d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_54d ago (Edited 54d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog53d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad54d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_54d ago
