Just because those people aren't buying tons of games, doesn't mean that the term is meaningless. It just means that those people are casuals, or hardcore gamers that are dedicated to those few franchises.

To be honest the term(s) is quite meaningless. Even when I was buying tons of games I never label myself an hardcore gamer. It just seem pointless.

Sureshot3897d ago

Okay? It's the industry that coined the term... We just call ourselves 'gamers'.

KryptoniteTail3897d ago

Lol okay. Right. Lump the Facebook and Mobile gamers in with pro gamers at EVO while you're at it, why not.

Summons753897d ago

While I laugh at the term "pro gamers" I do agree with you. People who play facebook or cellphone games aren't real gamers, they will never be as dedicated or passionate about video games or understand a tenth of the industry.

Spotie3897d ago

I wouldn't say they're not real gamers, but I agree otherwise.

It's not for bragging rights or anything- or shouldn't be- but it IS an important distinction. It helps the industry, for example, figure out why you shouldn't rely on a particular market segment to carry your company(looking at YOU, Nintendo).

this article is about mmo's or mobas. with those you want to cast the widest net you can since you rely on monthly payments. So just because a certain studio, making a certain game doesn't use the term to evaluate their audience, sure doesn't mean that "core gamers" don't exist.

I consider myself a core gamer, which i consider means that someone who plays games that aren't primarily phone or facebook etc. The main part of it though i consider is someone who is enthusiastic and closely follows the gaming industry as a hobby.
