Face-Off: Zombi

Digital Foundry:
The Wii U version is still worth experiencing for its unique take on the experience of course. The controls are among the best uses of its largely neglected second screen, while its multiplayer mode remains an exclusive feature. PS4 and Xbox One do improve performance though, and despite drops below 30fps around Buckingham Palace, each offers a smoother ride overall. From a purely technical standpoint PC is an easy recommendation for pushing past this 30fps barrier. But given the quality of Zombi's core premise there was perhaps a missed opportunity here to go all out on all three, with a more lavish conversion for more powerful platforms.

So sharper textures in some areas, no lens flare, and 1080p on PS4? Sounds like a crappy port to me

TFJWM3939d ago

Its just a port, minor improvements is about all you can expect for a game that is selling for $20 USD.

Whymii3939d ago

I thought the Wiiu was supposed to get the half arsed ports years after the other consoles. What's next, Lego City Undercover?

PygmelionHunter3939d ago

Unbelievable... Not only is this instantly butchered without the Gamepad, but it's also lacking in some areas compared to the Wii U version? Ubisoft never ceases to amaze me.

Angeljuice3939d ago (Edited 3939d ago )

Did you read the article? They said that the removal of the second screen didn't affect the gameplay much (if at all), I don't see that as being "butchered".

The only thing missing is the local multi player game as the viewing angle and dirt overlay are merely creative decisions.

This release is a low budget attempt to counter the mistake they made by backing the 'wrong horse'. It's a budget title selling for less than a third the cost of a full standard release. Don't expect it to be groundbreaking.

You seem to be missing the point, like always when it comes to Nintendo.

The game looks and plays WAY more like a horror game with the effects and having to look at the gamepad.

The "next gen" versions look way too bright, no suspense and not atmospheric at all.

Big difference, something you would have noticed if you actually played the game, which I highly doubt you did.

Angeljuice3939d ago (Edited 3939d ago )

No, I haven't played the game, have you played the new version? No! Then how can you possibly comment on how the lack of something effects the gameplay?

The guy that wrote this article has played both and says it doesn't really have a detrimental effect on the gameplay.

As the only person in the equation who is qualified to make a comment about the two versions based on personal experience, I'll take his word for it rather than that of some random nobody.

PygmelionHunter3939d ago

So, messing with the whole art direction for the worse, removing its only multiplayer mode, and making the game easier by altering the FOV are not game changers at all?

Also, considering that the whole idea for the game was to show what you could do with the Gamepad, I'd say they should at least allowed some sort of compatibility with the Vita/Smartglass.

And if by "backing the wrong horse" you mean having made an actual effort to create something original on a next gen console (a rarity these days), and actually having sold a decent amount of units, then no, they didn't jump into the wrong ship. We all know about the abysmal business decisions by Ubisoft regarding their relationships with Nintendo at the time.

Angeljuice3939d ago

"Messing with the whole art direction for the worse"
They obviously feel it is an improvement or they wouldn't have changed it. The developer changed it for the better (as far as they are concerned) but you don't like it. That is fair enough, but the way you say it makes it sound like they sent it to the self-destruct department to ruin their own game.

A lot of Nintendo fans are trying to downplay this port as broken because they are upset about losing an exclusive. I don't buy that they are shocked and dismayed that the other platforms are having things cut/changed in their versions.

When was the last time Nintendo fans were up in arms that a rival console gets an inferior port?

wonderfulmonkeyman3939d ago

Wow, you're still defending Ubisoft despite the obvious bad job they've done with this cash grab...

What you don't seem to get, is that Nintendo fans aren't upset that this came to other systems.
They're upset that, unlike with the Wii U fans, Ubisoft is getting away with the same BS they pulled on their Wii U ports, and are getting defended for it, simply because they did some graphical touch-ups and put the game on more popular systems.

Ubisoft DOES NOT DESERVE DEFENDING in this case, and it sucks to see ANY member of the gaming community taking their side due to something as insignificant as a graphical face lift.
One that, it needs be mentioned, actually proves to be a DETRIMENT to the game in some areas, in terms of atmosphere, by removing creative decisions that added to the nuances and atmosphere of the original.

You need to quit denying that this is a butchered port.
No multiplayer
No Vita/Smartglass option to at least TRY to emulate the added benefits the game pad brought to the game's atmosphere.
None of the former creative decisions in visual effects that made improvements to the mood of the game.

Losing all of those for a face lift in less important graphical areas is nothing less than a bad idea.
And just fyi, I've had the opportunity to both own the first, and play the port.
The game pad being gone does make a huge difference.
A negative one.

@Wonderful

Ubisoft are not a developer they are a publisher. The devs made the changes (not Ubisoft).

I'm not defending anybody, I'm just stating that going by reviews and from what I've heard from people who have ACTUALLY PLAYED the new version, it is still a good game that doesn't suffer much from any changes made.

if ubisoft took it seriously and made a nextgen sequel with a new engine and a good story/budget, it will be the best thing ubisoft done in freakin years

the core level design and gameplay is very very good, it's a true survival horror, it make zombies feel like a threat

the game just overshadowed by ubisofts laziness

Concertoine3939d ago

Lol the lens flare was there to hide the poor graphics, removing it made it look worse

The title says the criteria was explicitly written to mention Eternal Darkness. I am happy to see House of the Dead: OVERKILL on here. With the rise of Grindhouse themes in the 2010s, (ie WET), this was one that was both entertaining and camp funny.

Would be nice to see a new Zombie game set in the UK again, some of the landmarks, old architecture and the like really fits in well with the genre.
