Has a GTA Killer Been Found?

GTA V is great, but Mafia III could end up being better in several ways.

I personally am tired of gta. I think San andreas was the best title in the whole series due to the fact that you got to craft your character as you saw fit. I realize that Mafia III is a predetermined character but I think it could be a breath of fresh air because of the time period and the weighty narrative that is possible during the 1960's. I'm very excited for Mafia III.

That is understandable! I loved GTA 4 and GTA V but I do miss the aspects of San Andreas, I loved going to the gym, robbing houses (that was tense :D) the variety of clothing, especially at the time exploring was fun.

Hope Mafia 3 does the job, Mafia 2 was great!

I respect your option but IMO vice city was the best. I played the single player story of gta 5 and had a Blast

IMO it ended all of the sudden
while 3 characters were fun the story was all over the place and didn't make as much sense

what I don't like is how as we move forward that each gta games world is getting smaller and smaller. I know they say it's these many square miles but the world in gta vice city and sa felt bigger, especially sa.

give me a complete remake of gta sa and take out those tedious plaNE missions

Ripsta7th3927d ago

As you saw fit?
IIRC yiu could only be a super skinny black guy or a super fat guy
Or in between
Wheres all this "as you saw fit come from"

toddybad3927d ago

TBH the first, overhead view, GTA was the best imo. Awesome!

I totally agree. Mafia has been much better at telling interesting stories. The story missions seem like a bit of a distraction in the GTA series from time to time whereas the story missions in Mafia are just more compelling to me. Granted there's far more side content in the GTA series but who really played the digital yoga minigame more than the single time it was required? When you think about all of the work that goes into those little distractions it seems to serve more to put a bullet point in a press release than to be something actually worthwhile. Also GTA was great in the beginning because open worlds were so scarce, but now that almost every type of urban environment has been rendered & explored, the period piece aspect of the Mafia series just adds a new wrinkle that make the games more interesting for me. The music is great, the voice acting is great, just a really underrated series.

Now that PS4 has Spotify, it would be really cool if they could bolster the soundtrack to Mafia 3 by having the devs curate spotify playlists and let us play those in the car. I know licensing costs can get very high w/ those classic tunes and that may be a work around to up the count of quality music on offer. I personally am more excited for the prospect of visiting 1960s New Orleans than the potential to visit Liberty City yet again in the GTA series. As long as the series stay in modern times its really hard for me to think of a single feasible city setting that would be new and interesting.

Do people really think a franchise that can sell 54 million units in one installment can be killed? That's more units in one game than many franchises do in an entire series.

joab7773927d ago

Yeah. Mafia 3 may have a better story, a realistic setting, and choice, bit there's so much more to GTA that resonates as a video game.

Don't get me wrong, I tired of GTA5 a long time ago, and am really looking forward to Mafia 3, but GTA5 is a monster!! And it's online component ended up being very successful.

What I really wanted from a Mafia game was a truely open city in which you start as a street thug who eventually through story is able to take territory until you become the Godfather of sorts. And then, you have to maintain. The online would be like NYC with the 5 families. You pick a family and there's a constant struggle for power. Mayne there are campaign seaaons, and someone is crowned Godfather after its over. Would be cool.

No one knows how much actual contwnt, aside from the initial story will be available. And TW3 set a high bar for quests. But even TW3's story eventually ended. GTA5's has continued due to its online component.

Yeah this articles title is really stupid. Whether Mafia 3 is good or not, out won't take down GTA or even get close I bet

jb2273926d ago

I don't think there's any chance Mafia can beat GTA in sales but when it comes to storytelling I think it stands an honest shot at being a more compelling and memorable game. GTA is all about the side dishes, Mafia is all about the main course. I'm kinda over just knocking around an open world and running over people personally, when I play a game I need to have goals and an endpoint in sight. I respect people that don't game like that but tastes differ for certain.

lol @ these articles, who writes them? rofl

I give 2k props for having an African American lead. It will be great from the get go. Imagine a story about coming home from Vietnam Nam in the South. It's like a triple whammy.

But it's bold and I can already see it now. How long will it take for articles to be written about how this character, in particular is portrayed. "Finally, an African American lead, who is shown as angry and vengeful and takes it out on others through brutal violence."

Obviously, I don't agree, and I can't wait for this story...gonna be epic. But it will happen. Because, like everything, and this article is a grrat example, all that matters anymore is Internet traffick.

mafiahajeri3927d ago

Half African American, just like tiger woods and Barack Obama.

SlightlyRetarted3927d ago

I just hate when these bloggers call a game "(popular francise) killer". Same clickbait "journalism" are those "Here's why (popular game) is bad".

KyRo3927d ago

Mafia 3 sounds good but it has no chance in taking down GTA let be real. it might be a good alternative although they'd have to do a hell of a lot of work to get near GTA's level. Mafia 2 was an good game but in no way comparitable to GTA5 or the not so good GTA4.

SquidBuck3927d ago

Depends how good the game is.

PlayStation Store’s top downloads of 2025

O'Dell Harmon Jr. writes: "Before we say goodbye to 2025, let’s take a look back and see what were the most downloaded games of the year. It was a great time for sports, shooters, and some new PlayStation VR2 games. Sports favorites topped the charts in US/Canada and EU, with NBA 2K26 and EA Sports FC26, respectively.

Juggernaut GTA V found a home in the top three for both regions, with new 2025 release Battlefield 6 claiming second place in the US. Fortnite took top place for free-to-play games, and Beat Saber continues its PS VR2 success."

FH5 4th in Europe compared to North America 14th. Not surprising.

LucasRuinedChildhood122d ago

I think it shows how shortsighted it was for Sony to let go of Evolution and not get them to make some sort of competitor (open world Driveclub?) 10 years ago.

bionicstar122d ago (Edited 122d ago )

its a hard bet to make. hindsight is always 20/20.

Christopher121d ago

After Driveclub's reception, hard to say it would have done well enough to compete. It's easy to dream of such a thing, but to make it happen? It's taken how long for CoD to be dethroned? And it was dethroned by Hogwart's Legacy and has gained it right back just the next year.

It’s funny to watch the only games EU and USA agree on was Minecraft and back ops 7 both regions on 6 and 7 spot respectively other than that FIFA rules EU

gold_drake122d ago

yeh, football is really popular here in europe ha

I would like to see a list that has both free to play and paid games together, but at least we have this.

To this day GTA5 is a top downloaded game and it makes me wonder if the industry is really ready for GTA6. I imagine almost nothing else will sell during that game's release window.

I’ve never played Fortnite GTAV or CoD BO7 but I do own GTAV for PS4/5 because I got them cheap.

gold_drake130d ago

i think we should either take those games out, or make a singleplayer list too ha

badboyz09130d ago

I still play gta V alot. The others nah.

Popsicle130d ago

This is why we can’t have nice things.

Tacoboto130d ago

What exactly are we not getting?

Did we not just have a 2025 filled with nice games like...

Silksong, Doom TDA, Expedition 33, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, Ghost of Yotei, Dispatch, Split Fiction, Hades 2, DK Bananza, and so many more?

Popsicle130d ago

Agree that all you just posted are great games. Expedition 33 is one of my favorites. Spent a large chunk of time on BG3 in 2023. Another for my all-time list.

My point though not well articulated in the OG post is that we would get more of the games of the quality you mentioned if so many valuable resources were not allocated to FTP slop and/or heavy monetization schemes. Some of what used to be my favorite franchises have been ruined by them.

To sum it up, I would like to see games like 33 outperform the profits made by games like Fortnite so more resources are allocated to great games. When heavily monetized FTP games are at the top of the list, we end up being stuck with a significant chunk of games that are not good. Or worst case scenario games that spend years in development, but get cancelled due to industry trend chasing.

cloganart130d ago

Such a pessimistic view. This year gave so many good games.

Christopher130d ago

Popsicle, I actually think we're getting more great games because of the slop. Developers are seeing that people aren't happy and taking advantage of big AAA studios not delivering for people.

Popsicle130d ago (Edited 130d ago )

Perhaps, and I hope you’re right. A shift is needed IMO
