Will Metal Gear Solid V Hurt Mad Max's Sales Potential?

With both games launching on the same day, you have to assume that the legendary name of Metal Gear Solid might have a negative impact on Max Max.

Was Mad Max going to have any sales to begin with?

KiwiViper853946d ago

Im getting Mad Max, couldn't care less for MGSV.

Burrito26a3946d ago

I'm getting it as well. Just seems like people may not know about it. Not much info is put out about it.

LOGICWINS3946d ago

@Burrito- I've been scavenging the Internet for days to find new info on the game, but theres very little out there. I'm buying Day 1 though. The gameplay just looks so much fun! One of the devs said it's going to be 50+ hours long.

TitanUp3946d ago

i'm also buying Mad Max over MGS. MGS has never been a game series that I like.

Ocsta3946d ago

Same here. I'm hyped to the nines for Max. MGS has never truly done it for me but my brothers cant wait.

DafunkyRebel3945d ago

there goes 60 bucks down the drain. "A fool is quickly part from his money"

Totally legit question. First have to see if Mad Max is any good to begin with. Don't use MGS as an excuse if it flops. If it is a good game, people are still likely to buy it. It has name recognition.

rezzah3946d ago

It has mine, and I'll borrow MGS5 from my cousin.

MazzingerZ3946d ago

Yeah, the game doesn't need any help To flop, it's a bad game.

themugen3944d ago

it's got my purcchase. but so does mgsv.

EinRobot3946d ago

Yes, it undoubtedly will. When I saw the release date for Mad Max I was surprised.

rdgneoz33946d ago

Yah. It's basically this years Shadow of Mordor, but Mordor last year was smart enough to wait a few weeks till after the hype train that was Destiny.

AtomHeart6233946d ago

I don't think sales will be all that affected by MGSV. I do think Mad Max will be surprisingly good, but I don't think it will be more than a cult hit.

MazzingerZ3945d ago

It will be unsurprinsingly bad

LOGICWINS3946d ago

MGSV requires heavy prior investment in the lore to fully enjoy. With Mad Max, you can just jump in and enjoy with no prior knowledge. Thats appealing to a lot of people. Personally, Mad Max looks MUCH more interesting to me. Easily my most anticipated game of the year assuming that Persona 5 gets delayed to 2016.

GameBoyColor3946d ago

I think the fanbase for mgs alone will be enough to make madmax's potential sales go out the window. If they had to pick a game it would obviously be mgs and they will skip out on MM or be the few that will get both.

Yui_Suzumiya3946d ago

Most "everyday gamers" don't even know about MGS to begin with. Very few people I've come across know about it. But everybody has heard of Mad Max.

rdgneoz33946d ago

So most "everyday gamers" have not heard of a series that has been around since PS1 days (on multiple systems with over a dozen games), and has been in the news (a lot lately) due to the controversy involving its creator (Kojima's final MGS before he gets kicked out of Konami)...

Instead, "everybody" ("everyday gamers"?) has heard about the first game (after 25 years - 1990 NES game) set in the Mad Max universe...

Don't delude yourself there.

ArchangelMike3944d ago (Edited 3944d ago )

dude you are talking absolute rubbish! Do you know how many copies the MGS series has sold across platforms since 1987? over 40 million copies

https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...

How many copies of Mad Max games have been sold?

Yeah, I thought so...

TomLovesXBOX3946d ago

I know many people who have never played a MGS game who are getting it day one. Many people jump in without playing prior games. It is enjoyed by many without knowledge of previous story.

GameBoyColor3946d ago

This is exactly what happened with witcher. People didnt play the previous games but they still got it and more or less became fans and enjoyed the story.

classic193944d ago (Edited 3944d ago )

Mgs5 is a prequel, so u dont have to know any of the story, because this game should set up mgs1 to mgs4. My money is goin mgs5 simply because it looks more fun to me, the only mgs game i played to date is mgs4. I will get mad max around next summer, because it me be dry.

I don’t think I’ve ever quite experienced an unfinished game that was slapped together with duct tape and construction paper to be sold as a finished product, basically making you replay the same missions and include a story that clearly was missing so much of the plot, like I did with this game.

I’m actually shocked that it doesn’t get calls out for this more.

franwex95d ago

It did. But the gameplay loop is still pretty good.

CoPilot: Gaming Chat is an amazing revelation - A true gamer friend at your side

CG writes: In this video, we take Microsoft's Copilot for a spin and talk about gaming and AI influences, and the implications of that. We talked about a possible Metal Gear Solid V remaster, Deus Ex remaster, Hitman Blood-Money mission, and more. Imagine trying to talk gaming with non-gaming friends in real-life and after 5 seconds, they switch off and possibly yawn. Well, CoPilot isn't like that, instead it's like talking to a like-minded gaming fan who is totally on your level. The public version of CoPilot released in Feb 2023 and already it's become almost indistinguishable from a real person.

Yes it is. My only complaint with the game was one of the trophies tied to the time trials. I just thought it was tedious to try to go after it.

Other than that it was worth every penny.

SDuck637d ago

There's an unobtainable achievement tied to server gimmicks since the servers were shut down (for pc players, you can just get all other achievements and grab the save file with that achievement from nexusmod), but man do I love this game.
After Furiosa, I decided to go back and rewatch the original 3 movies and recognizing so many things on Mad Max 2 from the game made me appreciate the game even more!

RhinoGamer88637d ago

Agreed, so is Days Gone... shame.

ChasterMies637d ago

Oof no. It’s appropriately if not overrated.

ZeekQuattro637d ago

I still play it from time to time. Sucks it never took off as I remember looking forward to a possible sequel. Silly me.

Demetrius637d ago

On my 2nd playthrough and I still adore the vibe it gives

AAWELLS09636d ago

It def has a vibe to it and I agree its perfect for the game. Its such a shame it didnt get a sequel as I think it would've been their magnum opus.
