I love how the video makes the statement about how sony does not care about the half-assed backwards compatibility of the PS3

yet they worked so hard to make sure that some 99% of the games worked on it. made me laugh.

That was horrible. I guess that's what happens when they promised 100% BC. They just rushed it out.

200 games out of a total of 6000 games not working perfectly is not bad at all. also, these issues will be fixed in time.

That's just part of the equation, and trying to emulate the hardware of both PS1 and PS2 is pretty crazy. I'm still amazed they got 98.5% backwards compatibility when they have over 8000 titles out.

The PS2 had texture filtering effects for PS1 titles, so it would help a lot if we could have both anti-aliasing and texture filtering.

Microsoft, even after a year, only has 200 or so titles backwards compatible on the 360, which pales in comparison to what Sony's achieved. However, I do agree that Sony needs to take a major hint from Microsoft and add a standard graphical upgrade for older titles. Seeing as how they fixed the 1080i issue right away, I'm hoping this gets fixed up in a timely manner.

Yes, the haters have already jumped onto this article crying "Woe is me. I was going to buy a PS3 strictly for Backwards Compatibility, but Sony has lied to me again! Oh!" Just ignore/laugh at them, and compare 250 compatible titles (360) vs 7,800 compatible titles (PS3).

I do however question how good a PS1 titles would look with full anti-aliasing and at 1080p. It'd probably be fun staring at the pixelated textures.

A total fanboy article? I have been amazed everytime I have played Metal Gear Solid 3 on the PS3. It is horrendous. Seriously. How is it possible for a game to look WORSE on a new Next-Gen console. I bought Bully, and it was t he same story. It doesn't hamper gameplay, but it sure as hell dampens immersion. You sit there and look at your 50 inch HD Plasma using the HDMI input and think that it looks worse than the PS2 hooked up to a SDTV. It is sad.

That being said, there are only a few PS2 games I want to play on the PS3... Bully, GTA, MGS3. They work, but they are ugly. There are only two Xbox games I want to play on my 360. Halo 2 and Ninja Gaiden, and they look better.

So tell me who has a bigger BC issue in this case? I am pissed at Sony for not fixing this problem since it was one of my biggest gripes... the other being the lack of a unified friends list.

I think this will be solved in the near future. Remember, currently the PS3 is running PS1/PS2 games through the actual b/c chips. They've said that this is a stop-gap measure until they finish their Cell-powered software emulation, then a future update will deactivate those chips. Running via the Cell might offer a lot more flexibility in terms of filtering, upscaling, etc.

Time will tell.

I have a 360 im happy with and I want a PS3 but not for another 6 months when all the bugs are worked out. They really killed themselves with this Blu-ray format and the development of the Cell, although a fantastic device, made all of this take a while.

Having a Ps2 inside the PS3? I still don't see why people buy next gen and still play old games on them. But then again I still have my xbox but play Halo 2 on my 360, it looks a lot better there.

Why would anyone want to wear out their 600+ new ps3 playing old ps2 or ps1 games, have you seen the price of a new ps2 lately? At least sony still supports it's last gen player unlike microsoft who quickly dumped the xbox, so sorry to you xbox fans, when your box die's it's game over for all your old games just like it will be in two or three years when the 720 comes out!

Agreed PS3 was a rushed response to the launch of the 360.

As far as BC goes, I'm not complaining because quite honestly its not (that) important to me but, I understand that for some its a big deal. DJ the statements you make about the 360 can all be atributed to the PS3 as well, both have had their share of problems....the difference is YOU and all the Sonyfanboys have been saying that we would see the "Superiority" of the PS3 come November, only now November has come and gone, unfortunately for YOU and the Sonyfanboys the PS3 has been dissapointing to say the least, sadly the "superior Cell" does not even upscale PS1 or PS2 games at this point, I'm not a tech guy but its just mind boggling why Sony wouldn't include this considering how the next gen starts when they say it does. Even you have to admit that Sony did not live up th the hype, you proclaimed. lol, it makes me laugh when I think about all your "Sony is superior" comments, 'cause it just doesn't look like the case.

It seems that XboX360 is looking even more attractive since the "smoke & mirrors" of the "mythical PS3" have been blown away by a cool breeze on Nov 17th. yeah its early and I'm sure things will get better for the PS3, but when will we see all this "potential"? or will this be another case of "wait & see" our superiority?

Everybody is turning a vaild point into a way to pit consoles against each other. But the fact is this: as a gamer who bought a PS3 and fully expected all your PS2 games to run on it... didn't you expect them to at LEAST look just as good as they did on the PS2? Are you happy that the 5 or 6 hundred dollar investment you made in Sony seems only based on the future (what awesome games developed exclusively for PS3 will look like, in time) but lets those thousands of PS1 and PS2 titles look like crap on your next-gen machine? Face it, there isn't a lot of PS3 games out right now, especially good ones, so a lot of gamers probably were counting on playing their older games on their new system. Sony let them down. This has nothing to do with Microsoft, or what the 360 can or can't do as far as backwards compatibility, but as was mentioned above, most people will only play a handful of the previous generation's titles on their new machine, and the 360 makes some of the biggest titles released for the original xbox look BETTER. But, don't overlook the positive side of this. It is entirely possible for Sony to release a firmware patch that fixes the problem-- the only reason they haven't said anything about it yet is because they have to wait until they know for sure they CAN.

this may be part of a marketing strategy as underhanded as those we've come to expect from MS and EA. Everyone by now knows about tekken 5 being re-released via the Sony network. It looks amazing, and comes with slightly more content than the original ap did, right? Maybe Sony isn't acknowledging the craptitude of their BC because they're planning on just refurbishing most of their best sellers with better resolutions and extra content to be released in a similar manner. Not too many people would be willing to pay for an ap they already own a hard copy of, UNLESS their current format isn't as appealing as the new one (a la HD content). Now before all the 360 fanboys adopt my little conspiracy theory as their new mantra, let it be stated for the record that Sony has never done anything even remotely along these lines before, not like MS. So before you go pointing your finger, think about the company you've chosen to support. Peace.

It's amazing to see how many people have two cents on something they could give a rat's a$$ about re: what SNE does or how they do it, when they have absolutely NO stake in it whatsoever. But the fact that SNE is the "king of comments" will never die I suppose. I can live with that.

Anywho -- Has anyone ever pondered the question of why you wouldn't just play your original PS2 games on the "PS2" (duh) with the Xploder HDGP software working it's magic the whole time? I mean, since I bought both of my PS3's my PS2 has never been disconnected from its WEGA station with the Logitech wheel in full splendor plugged in right next to it. So what the hay? "Some" of you guys including, the desperate pinko that generated the story are worrying about things that in the long run -- are not consequential to the death or life of this console. All that's sought is a quick "wow" factor that get's the SNE-hater-nation riled up and those people beating their chests about how "bad" SNE is (compared to all other corp.'s lol) and how they're going out of business, when in reality, they should be happy with their console purchase and not ranting about something they don't own. But I've got an interesting theory in that: I think some people have made Hating SNE a game in itself, right? Yeah it's fun and if you're bored with what you're involved in, then what's better to do than hate, right? And if you do own a PS3 and HATE it, then take it back or smash it and video tape it, or set it on fire -- whatever stokes your inner child, just do it. All wishful thinking.

look good on ps3 because i have a great tv and monster cables.but at least i can play my ENTIRE BACK CATALOG OF GAMES ON IT.where's my 360 update for nfl 2k5?and every other good game?not just the ones i have but others that people want to play.

would it have been nice for upgrades in looks on ps3?sure.but i'll take a small(very small)hit if it means i can play all the old games as well as the new ones for ps3.200 compared to 7800.what a big difference.

This is the true power of the PS3. messed up, laggy and crap games. The only way i can see PS3 being s success is if they make a thing called "Good Games". And maybe, just maybe get those PS2 games to not look like crap on a next gen system. This is why Blu-Ray is complete BS especially for gaming. Cause the PS2 discs are not Blu-Ray and the Blu-Ray player wont read and put out the same for normal dvds as it would with BDR's, the picture comes out crap. This is why they should have never have put Blu-Ray in it. COMPLETE USELESS.

Its good to be back on here. Gone for a week cause of viruses, and then i come back to more BS about PS3 and 360. Just the same as the last time i checked it out. Didnt that new up-date for N4G happen yet, or is that for the new year?

Seems like games that are encoded in 480i have this problem, while games in 480p (or with a 480p mode) do not. So some games are affected, not all. Weird thing is that it looks like some people have problems with MGS for instance, while other people do not.

It's a little tiring to hear people rip on Blu-Ray. No one ever mentions that the Wii can't even play DVDs. Now that's something to be a little upset about, but people don't care. Why? Because it's all about the games. Movies are secondary. Give me the game, and I'll get the movies afterwards.
