All jokes aside though, and since I'm at work, I'll keep it brief as possible. Everything I write is strictly opinion, as well.

I agree with what most people from N4G have already said. It would not end the console war, but yes, it would most definitely close in those margins to very, very significant levels. I honestly know three friends that would go out and buy a ps3 today if a FFVII remake was announced. That should give some idea to both Sony, SE, and all of us how this would start pushing PS3s just like MGS4 did.

To MontreAlien: I both agree and disagree with your MGS4 comment. See, on one side of the arguement you could say that MGS4 is more accessible to the public. It is an action game with a well known main character and has been hyped up to no end. Would a RPG from the PS1's early days be able to make such a ripple?

I can see both yes and no. We all know how well known FFVII is. It has a huge fanbase, I'd say larger than MGS does. But what made MGS sell so many was the fact the idea of all the things it boasted. Great graphic, cinematics, etc. You read some boards even on N4G and you hear about people that haven't played MGS2 or 3 and yet have beaten 4. Would FFVII be able to pull first timers? I'm not so sure.

All I know is that it would have a huge impact for any console it was released for. Case in point: If it is/was released for Xbox 360, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

if this happens then seriously good bye MS and japan will be retaken from Nintendo's hands, that's how big this game is. i really do hope this happens this will safe SE face in japan cuz i can promise you that they lost a lot of face in japan with that E3 announcement.

I don't think they should remake it. It can ONLY disappoint. Let's say they changed one little thing, then some fan is going to get upset.

Should they use fixed cameras, like in the original game, or have a freely rotating camera? Fixed cameras would be better IMO, but they wouldn't really show the graphical updates very well (in FF7 they were pre-rendered backgrounds anyway). A free camera might take away from some of the tension, atmosphere, and cinematic quality of the game.

What about the battle system? Would it be criticised for having random encounters and every time you meet an enemy it loads into a different level rather than fighting the enemy where you are? Again, if you fought the enemies in the same place the action took place, the levels would need to be redesigned and have wider, more open spaces.

Will the world be as sparsely populated as it is in 7? There were probably fewer than 20 settlements on the entire planet. In 7 we forgave all these things, because we were able to imagine that it _is_ a huge world with lots of settlements and we only see some of them, just like we can imagine the people _are_ real and not just 20 polygons slapped together. If it were remade, it would all seem so much more real, and we might not forgive these things so readily.

The same stands for the fact that midgar itself is only about 1/4 mile across - do we expect the _entire_ of midgar to be created for the remake? If you really love FF7 that much just go and play the original game again.

IMO, if they made a new game rather than remaking a game which many believe was awesome anyway (and so doesn't really need improving), it would be much better.

Definately not a YES! But nonetheless a remake or follow-up to FFVII cannot and would not be ignored by the likes of Microsoft. FFVII was and still is huge, just look at the popularity of Advent Children and other media spin-offs from the game.

Whichever console gets it exclusive would sell bucket-loads of consoles, whereas MGS4 is great and all, it simply didnt have the effect that FFVII had to the generation that owned it on the PSOne, for christ's sake I still have my copy of FFVII on my shelf, only PSOne game that I aint traded yet and probably NEVER WILL!

I don't really want them to remake it because they will probably ruin it. The only way I would want them to remake FFVII is if they left EVERYTHING the same, just change the graphics. We all know that them leaving everything the same probably wouldn't happen. I bet there would be some dialog change and cutscene changes that would disgrace the original.

It'll fix a couple of ret-cons from Crisis Core. Also ever since Crisis Core was made, the game BEGs for a remake. I'm very sympathetic with the retro gamers about preserving a masterpiece, but DAMN! C'mon!!!

It would be awesome if SE did it. Whether they do it right of wrong it WILL be a system seller- just not as big as GT5. Thats the biggest system seller the ps3 has. Too bad its not coming out until 2010...

this wud prbly set a guiness world record if it was released with no announcement till it was gold, if square made it, then one day just put a commercial on TV and in magazines, there would be a huge shock and sales wud sky rocket, it would be amazing. but a remake isnt possible without 5 years of work.

u cant have super realistic cloud being a giant on the world map, the entire scope and scale of midgar and world map would have to be realistic and that in itself wud take for ever, not to mention all the dailog being voiced and tons of scenes redone, that would be alot of motion capture, most important as good and amazing the gameplay is, by todays standards in next gen graphics normal turnbased wouldnt cut it and would stray many new comers.

now if the sequal and destruction of genisis was made (endless crisis) then they cud make it an rpg but not worry bout lot of things since its new, like crisis core, it worked well but they wudnt have to worry about staying true yet at same time remaking it

before i get flamed, i know FF7 was a fantastic game. i know it has millions of fans. and i know it was huge.

but i don't see how most of the points the writer made would happen.

the game could definitely sell well, but it wouldn't end any console war or produce "a surge of never-ending sales"

and i have to ask everyone who would buy this game: would you really buy a game you have already played for $60 just because it has better graphics? you already know the entire plot, and while i'm sure it's a re-playable game, if it's the exact same game as the original, why not just fire up the ol' PS1 instead of forking down close to $500 to play a re-make?????

last question: does sony actually own the publishing rights? i was looking at the wikipedia page, and it doesn't say that-it just says sony published the game in NA and PAL territories, and Eidos published the PC port-so can someone please provide me a link to something where it says sony owns this game?

I havent played final fantasy VII... If I played it now, would I even get the slightest feel for it? All this talk about how great it was makes me so freaking curious. I actually have never played any rpgs, but damn, it seems like a really good genre I presume.

if SE wants more money and they are gonna release ffvii then I could see it going multiplatform. Wouldn't be a bad decision because more people get to play game and SE gets more money to develop more games.

well certainly it will help sony..but i think it will take long time before this game is released and the console war will be decided before then..unless of course sony knew about that they would be "screwed in the ass" and endorsed the development of the ffv11 remake..who knows..hehe

but in terms of the western market..i believe that it wont make that big change..cuz the 360 will remain dead in japan..they wont forgive u americans for dropping nukes on them..face it boy and girls!

Thanks alot man, you gave me a good idea of what an rpg is, most of those games I have played and loved, I totally forgot about kindom hearts. But Even after games have aged, I still love em like mgs1, I beat that like last week and it was still awesome. I'm gonna try out final fantasy and see what all the buzz is about thanks. I need a change from headshots.

You are very right about the graphics, I really wish I played it when my eyes were used to that stuff, I'm going to steal it from my nephew, I always wondered why he'd beat that game like every other day. You guys are making me want to start playing these rpgs.

If the do a remake a few things they will need to change and keep the same.

1. They need to intergrate the events of Crisis Core and any minor changes that happened.

2. Get rid of the stuffed moogle that Cait Sith has and just have him by itself.

3. More Backstory to all characters

4. Voice acting from Advent Children and Crsis Core.

5. Keep the materia system but minor change like the one in Crisis Core adding increaseing states like MAG+ 20

6. Heavy on the CGI and have a theatre to watch them again later.

7. Change Fire 1 and Fire 2 to Fire and Fira etc and have more magic and summons.

buy a ps3 sooner. its the only RPG(of that type) that I ever liked. and its one of my favorite games.

Who knows this might be one of the Sony Announcements at the Tokyo Game Show.
Japan love RPGs and I wouldn't be surprised if Sony already has a bunch of exclusive RPGs being made or in the works.
Something big in already going to happen at the Leipezeg Conference 12 Exclusive PS3 Announcements will be shown.
Also at the TGS expect to see some major RPG announcements.
Sony is hearing our prayers and they are going to deliver they always do in the end.

I didn't play this on the original Playstation, but I did buy the steam version after hearing about the amazing mods that are available. Square Enix definitely made the right decision to re-release this game on multiple platforms decades after release.

I am still wishing for the day Nintendo releases the original Pokemon Red and Blue on mobile with online features.

Edit: I am also looking forward to the day Square Enix ports FFX to mobile.
