Starfox Zero - A Second Pass Brings New Hope

Although Jason's faith in Starfox Zero has been restored, he still worries that Nintendo will have an uphill battle with marketing the game. Players are often eager to understand the new mechanic or new features to series they already know. In that eagerness they may find themselves fighting with the controls much like he did when he first played.

How does Star Fox Command on DS have online multiplayer but this one on the all powerful Wii U not get it?

Already my faith in Star Fox Zero is being tested

The 10th Rider3952d ago

Out of all the hate this game got, the only thing that really sunk my heart was the lack of a multiplayer. The graphics aren't the best, but I like that they're a great throwback to Star Fox 64. You can play without using the gyro, too. But the lack of multiplayer was a major disappointment.

What they said was that they had felt the past few Star Fox games tried to make the multiplayer fun and they lost a bit of something in the single-player...Which I kind of agree with. I'm still disappointed it's not there, but I guess I at least understand their reason. Here's hoping for some sort of expansion or something with multiplayer. Heck, I'd be game for a whole separate online multiplayer Star Fox game.

rjason123952d ago

If it's true that they think the single player will suffer, then they should have a small team work exclusively on the multiplayer.

gangsta_red3952d ago

I'm not going to lie, hearing this game not having multi-player was disheartening.

I said in past comments that I would love to have a team of friends piloting the air-wings in missions, dog fighting in PVP....it seriously writes itself on how good a Starfox multiplayer could be.

I was taken back by the graphics of this game also. I know the WiiU can do better than that, I'm hoping it's just early, early footage.

But Platinum is working on this game and Miyamoto. So there's no doubt that this game is going to be fantastic when it comes out for the WiiU.

BigDuo3952d ago

Unfortunately, the graphics are what they are. Don't expect to see a radical improvement. This game is coming out in just a couple of months any way.

Honestly, I am a bit concerned with Miyamoto's involvement. I think Star Fox Zero may potentially suffer from some frustrating design choices regarding its use of the GamePad's asymmetric gameplay. With that siad, I'm still interested in the game because I'm a big fan of Star Fox 64.

Concertoine3952d ago (Edited 3952d ago )

The problem with Star Fox 0 is that it simultaneously shoots for Nintendo's 60 fps standard (which hits the visuals hard enough, although usually worth it) and is also streaming two different perspectives at once. It's not like Bayonetta 2 or MK8 where it's streaming the same image to the gamepad or other games where it streams a static map. It's showing two different views all the time at 60 frames each.

I don't want to sound like an armchair dev, but the console's basically throwing out 120 frames at once. I bet it actually took a lot of effort to get the game in this state, a shame that no one will really see the technical side of it.

The game's set up itself is weird to me. It's like a re-imagining of 64? I don't even know. All i know is i've played that game at least 20 times and im sick of it, and so far i haven't seen enough new stuff for this game to warrant its existence.

The 10th Rider3951d ago (Edited 3951d ago )

@Concertoine

Yes, a lot of people don't seem to understand the whole FPS thing, there's a lot of games these days that aren't even running a solid 30fps. This is outputting 60fps to two screens, which is where the graphics really took a hit. I'm glad to see someone else acknowledging that.

It's not a re-imagining, it's a new Star Fox in the vein of 64 and the unreleased Star Fox 2. Hence Star Fox "Zero." A reboot starting at the beginning, of sorts.

The story and levels will be different, but it will use a lot of the same characters and planets. Picture it like how Zelda often uses the same locations but they're different. Or how some Zelda bosses have been in multiple games (Gohma), but they weren't really the same.

@BigDuo,

You can turn off the gyro controls, I believe.

RPGrinder3952d ago

I would rather have an amazing single player than crappy multiplayer which is what most games get.

Sly-Lupin3952d ago

Some games really do need a multiplayer component, though.

Something like Starfox, which is a bit of a rail-shooter, is most definitely not one of those games, however.

wonderfulmonkeyman3952d ago

Games with single player only are becoming rarer these days, but that doesn't necessarily make single player experiences bad.
Who knows; maybe they'll add multi in a patch later.
For now, though, I get the feeling that I'll still have tons of fun on this.
Comparing high scores on Miiverse through the new Play Journal is gonna be a fun pass-time.

PlatinumGX3952d ago

Platinum Games is the reason I'm so excited for this game.

BigDuo3952d ago (Edited 3952d ago )

Platinum is reportedly only working on art assets for Star Fox Zero, so it is not actually designing the gameplay which is being done by Nintendo's EAD group # 5. Nintendo revealed this to us back in an E3 interview with Kotaku.

It's a good ponder. Nintendo would be stupid to not do it. The more titles and first party line up released on the Switch 2 the more enticed the customer will be.

Star Fox Zero, Was it Really That Bad?

Has time been kind to Star Fox Zero? Does the game have any redeeming qualities that are worthy of revisiting? Should it be considered for a port to the Switch? Was it really that bad?

Haven't played it since it came out, but I really enjoyed it. Can't tell if that's just nostalgia-tinted glasses, or if I actually consider it a good game though lol.

Vits1660d ago

It's a mediocre game that reuses ideas, scenarios, characters and moments from previous ones. Paired with one of the worst control methods that I had the displeasure of using.

CptDville1659d ago

Those controls. Boring and frustrating at the same time. Only with co-op they were bearable, but co-op was restricted to finished levels.

SeTTriP1659d ago

Yes couldn't finish it it was so boring.

MissAubrey1659d ago

controls made me stop playing also what good is a 65inch tv when you have to look at a tiny Wiiu tablet.. same with kirby & the rainbow curse..

Einhander19711659d ago

No it was great, just the control scheme spoilt things really. The wii u screen was not needed for it really

I’d rather Star Fox Assault be brought to Switch with online multiplayer instead

Teflon021708d ago

Finally, someone who knows about Assault. Best Star Fox Multi-player imo.

Neonridr1708d ago

or a Star Fox 64 remaster instead.

deadfrag1709d ago

Platinum Games wants to many things but sadly it does not show nothing new for years! They try to jump on all offers but end finishing none!

whitbyfox1709d ago

1: Get rid of the motion controls.

2: Bring us Okami 3.

Good-Smurf1708d ago (Edited 1708d ago )

I rather have them show more of Bayonetta 3 first before they talking about any new project.
This reeks Inafune's funding for Red Ash and Mighty No.9 animated series, both never materialized.
