Itagaki throws GamePad under bus for Devil's Third, talks recent press criticism

Devil's Third footage is now out in the wild, and depending on who you ask, it's either glorious or terrible. For the most part the consensus from press who have played it seems to be that it's unintentionally bad, but may end up being a cult game somewhere down the line.

I wouldn't go so far as to say he is "throwing it under the bus". Just his preference that the Pro controller is smaller in the hands, thus it might be easier to access the buttons required.

The whole story behind this game is bananas.. I can't wait to see the final game.. it will be a complete $hit storm, lol.

* Because of the Gamepad ( Which IMO is good), the Pro Controller never got the exposure it deserves.

It's the most comfortable next gen controller to hold in your hands, so they did something right.

* The only thing off about the pro controller is the button placement for A,B,X,Y.

^ They are too close to the stick so when you try and move your right thumb down to a button you have to press two of them with the Inside of your thumb or lower part of thumb, and not the usual tip of the thumb press.

A redesign could make the a GREAT NX controller.

Concertoine3881d ago

Comfortability is subjective, but the main thing going for the pro controller is the damn battery life. It's estimated at 60-80 hours and that's freaking insane! Especially since my DS4 lasts 5-6 hours. I never game that long but the Pro controller has gotten me lazy with the charging (i charge it maybe once every couple month) so my DS4 dies a lot.

Hell i can get 5-6 hours out of the gamepad if i set it to level 3 brightness and power saver mode.

deafdani3880d ago

I honestly don't understand what he means with that argument of the possibility of hitting the wrong buttons in the gamepad. It's the same exact configuration as the Pro Controller, only with a big screen in the middle. I have both controllers, and there's not that much difference, besides the Pro Controller being more comfy and lighter for obvious reasons.

Anyway, some of his comments are downright absurd. For example, I don't believe his excuse for the lack of voice chat a single bit. I mean... seriously?

gamingpro3881d ago (Edited 3881d ago )

The negative exaggerations on this website regarding anything Nintendo is laughable. Lol where do these sad people come from.

Ignore or mention briefly anythin positive about Nintendo then exaggerate pages of negative nonesence. Bloody fan boys, they're like cockroaches around here.
Someone call the pest control.

Ristul3881d ago

I find it kind of refreshing to be honest, in the past Nintendo got a free pass on everything, but now people expect more, and demand more. It's not like we don't like the company, but in order for Nintendo to be at their best we need to give them feedback, even if it is not always positive feedback.

donthate3881d ago (Edited 3881d ago )

I think the problem is the crucification of other platforms than PS4.

There needs to be some middle ground, with both pro, negative and critical views.

Unfortunately, there are groups of people that are controlling the articles being posted here by either subverting the submissions process (yes, by emailing your friends to approve the story), or incorrectly marking stories and fail them.

Ristul3881d ago

@donthate I'm not saying your wrong, but at the same time, maybe it is a product of it's time. Sony did a lot of things right with the PS4 this generation while Microsoft had a troublesome Xbox One launch and Nintendo still waiting for the WiiU to take off in the wake of the massively successful Wii.

I remember Sony getting a lot of hate last generation with people making fun of the price point of the console and the lack of party chat, matchmaking etc.

donthate3880d ago

@Ristul:

"Sony did a lot of things right with the PS4 this generation"

Sony was about to announce the exact same thing as MS, but backed out and played off it.

"while Microsoft had a troublesome Xbox One launch and Nintendo still waiting for the WiiU to take off in the wake of the massively successful Wii. "

The right thing isn't creating a super PS3 and call it a PS4. They did nothing to advance consoles last generation and did nothing so far either.

Well apart from PS+. In retrospect giving away games on a monthly basis is a fantastic thing.

I think we just need more balanced content rather than a lot of opinion pieces criticizing MS and Nintendo while giving Sony a free pass.

Also, PC should also get more support as it is gearing up to be pretty good soon.

For example, a lot of people still give Wii a lot of flack, but it really didn't just bring motion controls, but it brought the fun motion controls.

You see a huge difference in what Nintendo did and especially what Sony or even MS did. Sony, it couldn't have been more boring. MS had two hits, Kinect Sports and Dance Central.

FallenAngel19843881d ago

Gamepad seems more like an obstacle than an essential device that'll influence the industry like Nintendo's controllers of the past

NintySonySoft3881d ago

I agree with ya man! they should of sold the gamepad as an Add-on, only if you wanted it like the Kinect is to xbox. Also they should of used the Pro controller as their main controller!

GordonKnight3881d ago (Edited 3881d ago )

The gamepad is amazing IMO. I hoping the NX has one or at least is compatible with it. Us Wii U owner want backwards compatibility with the NX.

LOL_WUT3881d ago

Not surprising given the fact that not even Nintendo have fully utilize the gamepad in any significant way that doesn't consist of mini games, off screen play or an inventory screen ;)

PlatinumGX3881d ago

The GamePad doesn't even feel that different from the Pro controller, at least for me.

Talk about a kick in the nutter butters

naruga3344d ago (Edited 3344d ago )

this game creator payed his idiocy to change the development for exclusive release on a dying hopeless console with the best way ....the game was generally good i liked it and was the closest thing to a hardcore Ninja Gaiden we could get on new consoles ....but literaly its creator was idiot as f..k to undermine his game (it was obviously downgraded for Wii u) and release it exclusively on a underpowered system for some cash, destroyed his name in a moment

rjason123343d ago (Edited 3343d ago )

Oh boo hoo. Someone didn't get a game to come to their system.

@Edmix
Believe me I know the feeling haha, just pushing out a similar statement many others make, just cause.

ShaunCameron3343d ago (Edited 3343d ago )

@ rjason

Apparently.

@ XisThatKid

How did they ask for it? You know the company responsible for the engine used to make the OG game went under forcing Itagaki to scrap it and start over, right? Not to mention THQ, its original publisher, eventually withdrawing support before going under. As for it becoming a Wii U exclusive, Nintendo was the one willing to help Itagaki with the funding to finish making the game.

_-EDMIX-_3343d ago

This is easily one of the stupidest investments I've ever seen any company ever make for an exclusive by a third party. I'm surprised you think the game is any good at all because I don't really believe the Wii U made this game bad, believe it was going to be bad regardless of where it was. The Wii U has a handful of really great games please do not blame the hardware for how crappy this game actually is. To my understanding when you create a game for a specific piece of Hardware your job is to adapt. So do not blame the hardware for why this game was horrible blame the developer for even downgrading the game in the first place as opposed to adapting to their situation. If you have to downgrade a game so significantly that it begins to affect the design and quality you're probably not supposed to be downgrading it in the first place to such a platform. I don't blame the platform in this respect I blame the developer because they chose to continue despite knowing the hardware differences. The regular Wii U exclusives don't have that problem because they were made to actually work on that platform...

@rjason- could be because it sounds to me like he basically likes the game but he's angry at the decision of it being exclusive somewhere else

XisThatKid3343d ago (Edited 3343d ago )

I have not felt so selfish about a game before. I like many waited and waited patiently since this games release and out of no where Wii U exclusive. At the time i didn't have a Wii u and honestly i wanted it for ps3 but that never happened nor for 4. Anyway i honestly am glad this happened. Save for the innocent dev and people involved But i never wanted a game to fail so badly. Not to mention when i finally played it i think it sucks imho. I'm fine with exclusives but when a game's announced for your console or platform of choice then retracted they're asking for it.

bouzebbal3343d ago

he had no big name to start with.. this same guy did the same to DOA4 and Ninja Gaiden for 360 and in the end he talks s### about Team Ninja about NG3 and DOA5. He's a loser !

blackblades3344d ago

Ikr it looked interesting in the beginning before it became an nintendo exclusive. Don't know what happened when it became an exclusive.

_-EDMIX-_3343d ago

Who knows , it was probably always going to be bad.

Ravenor3343d ago

A lot happens when a game gets developed. A proof of concept demo or pre rendered video being received well doesn't necessarily equate to a game game being good.

BLKxSEPTEMBER3343d ago

I'm still looking to buy a copy at a reasonable price.

ocelot073343d ago

Depends on where you are located. Here in the UK you can pick this up for around £12.

BLKxSEPTEMBER3343d ago

I'm in California. I haven't seen a hard copy yet.

xMANB3ARP1G3343d ago

bro you wont they made so few copies they are mostly locked in cages atm in ppls collections waiting for the value to skyrocket.

BLKxSEPTEMBER3343d ago

Yeah that's what I figured.

xMANB3ARP1G3343d ago

i only say that because im in the same boat all physical copies near me were scooped up day one and ebay had a field day

alfcrippinjr3343d ago

and this is why we should not support nintendo any more
they done it with the wii and they killed the ds off for no reason.

total bad for business

ShaunCameron3343d ago

Um. You can still get the main D3rd game, albeit digitally. The only thing they killed here was the online multiplayer.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3343d ago

Wait why are peopole acting like they care now? You didn't when it was released.

gangsta_red3343d ago

Yea, I haven't heard a peep or a whisper of this game since its debut.

gamer78043343d ago

its the principle of it, i don't like seeing any games shut down so quickly

Chaos_Order3343d ago

I don't think Itagaki is crazy for making a Wii U exclusive.

I think he's crazy for pushing out a half baked, flawed as all hell, generic gore fest on the Wii U without making use of any of the console's specific features, and throwing his toys out of the pram when people criticise it.

The ups, downs and future of Tomonobu Itagaki's Devil's Third

Tomonobu Itagaki, outspoken former leader of Tecmo's Team Ninja and current leader of Valhalla Game Studios, has spent the last eight years of his life working on the action game Devil's Third.

PhoenixUp3391d ago

Sucks to spend eight years on a project only to have it flop

MilkMan3391d ago

Love the interview. He's a great developer and I liked Devils Third.
